I guess you don't know much about soccer (unlike the other 192 states on that planet). Don't judge Beckham by his short guestplay for LA Galaxy, that was just an excessively overpaid holiday for him, nothing else.

For me Kobe Bryant is overrated. So is Barry Bonds, cause noone has ever heared their names, seen their faces or gives a shit about them in whole Europe.

Beckham....couldn't agree more. Thought they could do it here in the U.S. but was a big flop. Noone cares about him or the sport.   Wife thought she was going to ordained Queen of America too. Went home with tail between legs.

Please....Kobe (and basketball players in general) are probably the best athletes in sports. And hitting a baseball at 90 mph is one of the hardest things in sports.  Beckham........get real.

Kournikova.

Then nobody else.

Then perhaps that douche that fought Cyborg, what's her name, Carano?

Donnie Baseball comes to mind. Good player. But no legend IMO.

Freddy Adu and Frank Lampard also makes the short list.

Maddox-Smoltz-Glavine

is the best pitching lineup a team will ever have.

All of them future HOF'ers.

Maddox is as far as I'm concerned the greatest pitcher I've ever seen. The location and control on his pitches are unmatched IMO.

Even I, a Tribe fan, can admit to their superiority.

where did smoltz end up this season- I legit forgot

btw, that trio not only produced numbers and helped that club be dominant in the NL East for so long but they epitomized that team
You couldn't think of the Braves of during that Era without thinking of Maddox/Smoltz/Glavine

I think the Cards?

I saw that Smoltz was gonna do one more year - at least. Nice to see him keeping it up. He still got it, so why not keep playing.

But one more thing about the Three great ones. At least two of them, Smoltz and Glavine, were IMO good or really good with the bat.

Kobe definitely over-rated.

Michael Phelps over-rated.

Lennox Lewis over-rated.

Beckham in his prime was incredible to watch. Best dead ball specialist ever. Probaly best passer of ball ever. He could kick a ball to a running forward and have it land at his feet from 70 yards.

Granted he was not the most skillfull or fastest. But he was v hard working could run 15km a game and scored so many wonderful goals and set many up!

Too bad it sucks.

It's funny how threatened the Europeans are by American sports. No one in the USA cares nor talks about soccer. Yet the Europeans are always so quick to bring up the fact that all these people play soccer as if it's impressive.

Your posting history completely refutes the point you're trying to make. You pop up in every thread crying about American sports. No one over here cares about soccer yet you Europeans can't seem to stop telling us about how great it supposedly is. Threatened much?

Not one American cares about the fact that soccer is played by more people. As if it's surprising that a sport that requires nothing more than a ball filled with air to play is more popular than one that requires hundreds of dollars of equipment to play.

Look at his post. He complains about us not knowing about David Beckham because no one plays soccer here and then turns around and says Kobe is overrated for the very same reason. In-fact, the rumors of a Greek team wanting to pay Kobe $50 million a year to play for them would indicate that many, many Europeans know who he is.  ;)

Haye's weaknesses are clear to see - BUT he has excellent amateur pedigree, was the first fighter since Holyfield to unify the Cruiserweight division, and is now a heavyweight about to fight for a title.  I don't see how he's overrated, as he has achieved in the sport, his credentials are good.  A great fighter.

1. Football takes a large field to play same as NFL NBA etc
2. A basketball and an American football is...wait for it....a ball filled with air.
3. Both football and basketball have nets/goals.
4. Does that mean unless you are playing in a multi-million pound stadium that playing 3 on 3 basketball on a street corner with a net screwed onto a wall does not count as basketball?
5. I hope this helps.

About 3.5 billion of them haven't had the chance to be exposed to better sports, american football, basketball, etc...  they have nothing to compare it to.

By your logic Madonna is a superior musical artist to Bethoven because she sells more cd's  ie: is more popular.... ::)

All of Europe, centeral and South America all play football. All of Africa play football. Middle East countries and most of Asia.

The few countries in the world football isnt the number 1 sport is probaly USA/Canada

The beauty of football is all it needs is a ball. So simple. The wheel is very simple - It works great.

Don't waste your time with these idiots, they don't have the slightest clue what they're talking about.

Bodybuilders who try to be PLers cant always cross over successfully. Vice versa.

Both use similar tools etc.

I beelieve it would be hard to try a different sport than the one you played for 15+ years day in day out. Even the toughest and most talented athletes would struggle big time.

Soccer doesn't take a large field to play on. Kicking a ball around a back alley with 3 people qualifies as soccer. Or do you think "4+ billion" (a completely fabricated statistic) are playing on regulation fields? Please. The billions of third-world people who can't even afford to eat aren't playing in leagues and on regular fields. They're kicking a ball around the dirty street they live on.

Don't waste your time with these idiots, they don't have the slightest clue what they're talking about.

Translation: I'm a crybaby that can't do anything but thump my chest and scream about how soccer is better because billions of third-worlders play it.

That's a little different than passing a ball between two people in a dirt alley. The closest goal could be 800 miles away and it would qualify as people playing soccer.

I could kick a pineapple to my friend and I'm technically playing soccer.  ::)

Soccer is such a popular sport yet Tiger Woods is the most recognizable athlete on the planet.

People draw nets or goals on walls.

As kids all teh kids in my area played using peoples gates of their houses as goals. Same rules apply just we use a ball and a make shift pitch. The street. Waste ground. Car parks etc.

Maybe push some trash cans apart they are the posts. I dont understand why you cant see this. If a throw a rolled up ball of paper in teh rubbish bin am i playing basketball  ???

I agree you are correct on superbowl - But noone watches it for teh sport. More for teh spectacle and sensationalism and the grusome wonderfullness that america does so well. They make things crude but endearing. Noone has a clue about the rules of american football they watch for half time show etc.

Thank you for proving my point. The fact that you can separate two rocks on the ground and kick any object that can be construed as spherical between them and call it soccer would explain why it's so popular. What I fail to see is how that makes it a good sport? Because poor people can play it?

It's funny that you guys build your argument around how many people play it. Never do you actually talk about the sport itself. I've never heard one logical reason for why soccer is more entertaining or a better sport that actually involved some aspect of playing the game. Meanwhile, any NFL fan will gladly build an argument around how the hits are incredible, the plays, the close games, the last minute drives, etc.

The saddest thing is that the US soccer team, full of athletes who couldn't even make a NFL or NBA practice squad let alone succeed amongst those athletes, beat arguably the best team in the world in Spain 2-0 in June. Our third-rate professional athletes against the best team in the world and they still blank them. I'm sure Spain just didn't give a shit about losing to "scrubs". I can only imagine how good the USA would be if the best athletes chose to play soccer. My guess is half of Europe would commit suicide if the USA men won a World Cup.

Is that why we consistently win the most medals at the Olympics? Even winning more medals than China, a country 5x the size of us and who pulls kids away from their family at 3 years old to train 10 hours a day for 15 years.

The American soccer team, full of third-tier professional athletes, beat Spain 2-0 in June. Spain, the best soccer team in the world, got owned.

I never said soccer was terrible. I enjoy the World Cup. It's an OK sport. American football is 100x more entertaining.

However, unless it's the world cup or the odd semi-finals or finals of a major league, I find it incredibly boring. I don't see the excitement in watching people kick a ball around a field for 90 minutes without any points being scored. Half the guys spend more time walking around the field than they do actually running.

The acting is entertaining, though. Watching someone get carted off the field after getting bumped into and then sprinting back on 15 seconds later really makes for an entertaining sport. Completely ruins the game.

Some of the best football games have been low-scoring, defensive games where big hits and goal line stands were the focal points.

Hundreds of points are scored in rugby, another European favorite. Does that sport suck like basketball?

Interestingly enough, America has the 11th ranked team in the FIFA Soccer rankings. 11th in the world in a sport we suck at. Ranked higher than all but 8 European countries.

The FIFA rankings have every European and South American team on them. World rankings usually involve teams across the globe, not "tiny central american countries". Interesting how our third-tier athletes are capable of beating the #1 ranked team in the world in June.

These are the teams in USA's federation

North American Zone (NAFU)
 Canada
  Mexico
  United States

Central American Zone (UNCAF)
 Belize
 Costa Rica
 El Salvador
  Guatemala
 Honduras
  Nicaragua
 Panama

Caribbean Zone (CFU)
 Anguilla
 Antigua and Barbuda
 Aruba
 Bahamas
 Barbados
 Bermuda
 British Virgin Islands
 Cayman Islands
 Cuba
 Dominica
  Dominican Republic
 French Guiana
 Grenada
 Guadeloupe
 Guyana
 Haiti
 Jamaica
 Martinique
 Montserrat
 Netherlands Antilles
  Puerto Rico
 Saint Kitts and Nevis
 Saint Lucia
 Saint Vincent and the Grenadines
 Saint-Martin
 Sint Maarten
 Suriname
 Trinidad and Tobago
 Turks and Caicos Islands
 U.S. Virgin Islands

The standard is much lower in this federation and the best team will win more matches get more points to help increase their rankings than say a team in europe. Less decent teams to challenge.

watching football can be unbearably boring

ardent fans will say the close goals and the excitement and oooo and ahhh of the odd goal makes up for it but in reality it doesn't.

90mins where the ball for the large majority of time is literally passed backwards and forwards is not my idea of entertainment

and another problem with football is the fans. Over here in england teh majority of them are what we call - scum.

Football - gentlemen's game played by thugs

Rugby - thugs game played by gentlemen

Ina  game where 3 goals are scored. A goal is a special event. In a 92-89 game a point is less important - u are stupid you cant realise this?

Yes they beat them - what is your point? Even the top teams lose.

You're trying your best to justify a sport that can be boring as hell.  Just accept it, Goudy.  Points are just as important in 92-89 game of basketball, because at the end of the game, a three point shot can tie that game and send it into overtime.  Points scored means nothing in the grand scheme of things.

I'm a big soccer fan, and I'm first to admit that many matches are very boring. Europeans are conditioned to this from a young age.  Soccer is all about pride for your country/team and the spectacle of the match.  Honestly, people care more about waving their flags and singing their songs, which project national pride, than the actual match.

I like you Goudy, but your ignorance of other sports (your biggest failure in many arguments - ignorance of how things work in places other than Europe) is your downfall, at times.

No one in the US gives a shit about soccer. Those who do care, make up less than 1% of the population

Kournikova.

Then nobody else.

Then perhaps that douche that fought Cyborg, what's her name, Carano?

Donnie Baseball comes to mind. Good player. But no legend IMO.

Freddy Adu and Frank Lampard also makes the short list.

Frank Lampard gets man of the match in almost every game he plays
And having the character to score that penalty in the champions league semi final 2yrs ago the day after his mother died was amazing

Football can be boring?

We get Superbowl for free in sweden and I had to turn it Off because it was so boring.
Run 10 yards, drop the "boll", rest 5 min start all over, run 20 yards, fall get a bunch a dudes on top of you, rest 5 min start over.

etc etc etc

They rules should be changes though, making it a bit tougher because the referee can ruin a match just blowing the damn thing for every little shit that happends, thats the only thing that bothers me.

soccer is much too euro for my liking. Plus it is boring as shit. I might watch a game if Australia makes the world cup again, but other than that, i would rather watch paint dry.

Soccer is the most common activity shared by the most amount of people in the world.

More people support or play soccer more than any single organised religion.

FIFA World Rankings although important have nearly always been derided as inaccurate.

BeserkerFury is melting down.

I guess China is the best country in the world since they have the biggest population.

Fuck, people.... Just because it's popular DOESN'T make it the best. Try actually learning the game of football and compare it to soccer. It's not even close.

Haha. American twinks trying to cover their asses.

Don't you think that NFL would've diffused into something as good as you hype it up to be, seeing as The Superbowl is "the most watched sports event in the world"? I've never heard of a World Cup of Gridiron.  ::) 100 years of the game not enough to generate other countries to have pro leagues?

Just because people have a passing interest in a game, doesn't mean they actively participate in/have passion for it. And the same goes the other way. The head of AIG said it best when they sponsored Man U's kit. He said he didn't do it for the European market, he did it for Asia. China is huge for football (and basketball) but don't have the greatest infrastructure for it. India is a different kettle of fish altogether.

But that's alright, you've got your Superbowl half-time show and an ailing economy.  :-*

I mean, Rooney would've kicked his arse at 16, Messi or Bojan would've too.

With the exception of Big Nog and Crocop, he only fought tomato cans. And I think that Nogueira is overrated. He is a great wrestler, but his striking skills and power leave a lot to be desired. As for Mirko, great striker, but his ground skills are pathetic. Let's see how he does against Brett Rogers. This is the first fighter that Fedor will fight against that has great striking ability who Fedor doesen't outweight. As I see, Fedor will only stand a chance if he takes the fight to the ground.

Fedor's aura will be destroyed forever. Are you suggesting that the Fedor vs Rogers fight will be arranged? I hardly think so. Fedor is fighting for Strikeforce and not the UFC, so there is no reason why they would try to stop Rogers from winning just to boost future earnings for a hypothetical Fedor vs Lesnar fight.

No, I am saying that Fedor's management is idiotic. Fedor fighting for strikeforce when a Lesnar fight could possibly put a few mill in his pocket.

You sir, are nuts. He fought the best Pride had, at their best. He ran through two recent champions of the UFC. Who do you think he needs to fight apart from Lesnar and perhaps Mir (both UFC contracted)?

Ask Sylvia how hard he hits?

the best athletes in the world today are NFL players.  They build there bodies to be stonger, faster, quicker, more explosive and more violent than other athletes(except MMA in violence)

faster = sprinters
quicker = same as faster
explosive = oly lifters

NFL athletes have a combination of all three abilites that neither oly lifters and sprinters have.  sprinters may be straight ahead faster for 100 m. can a sprinter beat a WR in a 40 yard dash? No. Are they quicker, definetly not.

Oly lifters would get destroyed by olinemen and dlinemen. There explosiveness is concentrated in a single movement and thats it.  Cmon man.
