WICHITA, Kan. - Former heavyweight boxing champion Tommy Morrison is in a Kansas jail on drug charges, the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office said Friday.


Morrison, 42, made an initial court appearance Thursday on two charges - possession of marijuana after a previous conviction, a felony, and possession of drug paraphernalia, a misdemeanor. His bail is set at $50,000.

The former Jay, Okla., resident was charged April 27, court records show.

Morrison was extradited to Kansas from Tennessee this week, officials said. Morrison's previous conviction stems from a 2005 South Dakota drug arrest.

Morrison's preliminary hearing is set for Sept. 29, and details of the charges will remain confidential until then, officials said.

A financial affidavit from Morrison states that he is married and lives inPigeon Forge, Tenn., and that he has no savings or property, the Wichita Eagle reported.

On a court document, on the line asking for his occupation, he wrote "athelete," the newspaper reported.

Morrison started his boxing career in "toughman" contests in Jay and fought his way to the top in 1993 by defeating George Foreman for the World Boxing Organization heavyweight title.

He went on to star in "Rocky V" and made several television appearances.

In 1996, it was reported that Morrison had HIV, the virus that causes AIDS.

He has been convicted numerous times of alcohol, assault, drug and weapons crimes and spent 14 months in an Arkansas prison, reports indicate.

That really sucks. His father lives (or at least used to) out here and Tommy used to attend the same NA meetings that I used to go to. He stayed clean for a long time but I guess he really fell off the wagon again.

Holy shit! It looks nothing like the last time I seen him. I watched part of Rocky 5 last week and was wondering it he was still alive considering his disease and all. It is like he has totally given up on life since he caught HIV.

Tommy Morrison retired from boxing in 1995 because of a positive HIV test performed by the Nevada Athletic Commission before a scheduled fight. He re-emerged in 2006 after finding that the 1995 result was a false positive test. It is surprising that he could have gone 10 years before finding out about this false positive result, but sometimes events like this occur. He recently had to submit blood tests for HIV antibody and antigen testing and he was cleared to box so the results were negativ

This sounds very unlikely. HIV positives are tested all the time.
