Jack Layton Reveals Early Coalition Plans
In Tapes Leaked By ToriesSunday November 30, 2008
CityNews.ca StaffThere were new developments Sunday in a story of political intrigue that has more twists and turns than a French cruller.
First, word from Ottawa the Liberals and NDP had reached a formal agreement to defeat the Conservative minority - despite a flurry of concessions to avoid just that.
But the Tories had uncovered their own weapon earlier in the day. They had secretly taped a potentially damning NDP conference call on Saturday, holding the recording for one day before leaking it to the media.
The conversation revealed NDP Leader Jack Layton was planning to bring down the government months before the government issued its ill-fated economic statement.
"This whole thing would not have happened if the moves hadn't been made with the Bloc [Quebecois] to lock them in early because you couldn't put three people together in three hours. The first part was done a long time ago. I won't go into details," Layton divulges.
The senior official from the PMO who distributed the recordings also suggested more will be revealed later this week.
The New Democrats defended the call at a news conference, saying they will sue and may pursue criminal charges. They vowed to continue on their current path.
"[The economic statement] was a terrible miscalculation. We're not going to give them another chance. We know exactly what we're up against. We're structured. We're organized. We've worked very hard the past four days and you're going to see the fruits of that labour very shortly," noted NDP Member of Parliament Thomas Mulcair.
The Tories - who were given the codes to the NDP caucus phone meeting - claim they were invited to participate in the closed-door strategy session, although it was likely accidental.
This all leads up to the political showdown on December 8. That's the date of the non-confidence vote that could spell the end of the six-week-old Conservative government - and put the Governor-General in the middle of a constitutional crisis.

What's up with that? Did the Tories engage in an illegal wire tap of their lines?
Is the Conservative government breaking the law in order to remain in power?
Is Stephen Harper doing a Richard Nixon? It gets interestinger by the minute! Just when they made it so comfy, ...looks like Prime Minister Stephen and his wife Lorene are going to have to move away from Sussex.
I wonder if the moving vans will be bumping into each other as Dion moves out of Stornaway and into Sussex,
and Harper moves out of Sussex and into Stornaway. Layton & DuCeppe don't have to pack though
Harper is running scared. First he announced on Saturday he was tabling the tax-payer funding to political parties, hoping that would stave off the coalition.
When that didn't work, items that appeared non negotiable on Thursday, came to the forefront.
They announced they were backing off curtailment of the public sectors unions' right to strike.
Then Sunday they announced they were speeding up introduction of the new budget to Jan, and within it would be millions of dollars in stimulus spending for troubled sectors of the Canadian economy. It's not going to do them any good though. The Opposition is firmly committed, and a coalition spokesperson issued a press conference that basically said it is
"fait accomplis!"
