Because it could always be worse, and it makes you realize than you're not the only one with hard times.

One mans despair does not belittle another mans despair.

The cause may be different but the feeling of despair may be the same.

I don't think anyone (when suffering from any kind of trauma or setback) believes that he is the only one having hard times in the world.
