No, the Slin is actually helpful. The massive GH doses raise blood glucose noticeably. This is what's seen to cause the pre/T2diabetes in everyone, not just Bodybuilders. Regular Slin use will actually help protect the body by lowering this crazy high blood sugar. I don't believe he was sick. He did lose weight towards the end, but indicated he had pretty much stopped lifting with weights completely and had started doing cardio to go for the fitness look.

Muscle is worse then fat in this regard. When I was a fat 200lbs I could still run several miles at a decent 8-9 minute pace without problem. Now at 195lbs, 12-13% bf and even running one mile is a giant bitch.it matters more whats inside your arteries and viens then whats on the outside

Ray Mentzer died at 47 in 2001. In 1991 he told me several of the guys were getting sick when their body weights approached 300 pounds. Ray also used potent pain killers for neck and back pain. Cleared my migraine headache quickly but he wouldn't tell me what the pill was. Ray ended up on dialysis and died tragically while not very old. Many of us older guys were wondering how long these guys would live, what with steroids, pain killers, diuretics, etc.Not saying steroids don't play a huge role, but you bring up pain killers.. These and other rec drugs a lot of these top guys abuse and I think often times they are the real culprit or at least a major contributing factor on top of the bodybuilding lifestyle. I think if a lot of guys took the steroids and that was it, things might be somewhat ok.. well sort of lol... but when you combine party drugs and painkillers most bodybuilders who die have a long history of these

Born in Stuttgart, Germany, Nasser’s father was Egyptian and his mother was from Yugoslavia (now Serbia). Throughout his contest career he insisted that he be billed as representing Yugoslavia.

SLOW ASCENT
Most guys who crack the Olympia top six on five occasions, as Nasser did, rise pretty fast through the pro ranks. Nasser didn’t. His pro career started inauspiciously in 1990, and the first occasion I saw him was at the 1991 Night of Champions where he finished out of the top 14. The winner was Dorian Yates and on that day if someone had said the Yugoslavian behemoth would eventually threaten Yates’ Olympia reign, they would have been told, “Yeah, and one day Arnold Schwarzenegger will be Governor of California.”
Two third places in 1993 at the French and German Grand Prixs signaled that the 270 pounder was on the move, and 1994 was a breakthrough year when he finished second to Mike Francois at the Night of Champions and seventh in his first Olympia. By now he had moved to San Diego and I got to know him quite well as he came into the Weider offices in LA regularly. I found him to be a thoughtful and well-educated individual; he had graduated from the University of Augsburg, Germany in 1992 with degrees in History, Political Science and Sociology. He was unafraid to laugh at himself and the “crazy world” of bodybuilding he inhabited. In fact most of the time the conversations would be non-bodybuilding. In the offseason he would, at 315 pounds, come into Weider HQ clad in shorts and casual shirt and as he made his way down the corridors, heads with WTF expressions would pop out of offices to stare in bulging eye fashion at this walking cartoon.
FLEX used to have a section called The Big Picture in which bodybuilders would pick their favorite books, cars and give out other trivia not connected with gym work. Nasser, alone, absolutely refused to do it. He would say, “I won’t answer stupid questions. Nobody wants to know what my favorite movie is.”
RISE AND FALL
In 1995 he won the Night of Champions and Houston Pro and was third in the Olympia and was seen as maybe the biggest threat to Yates, who he could match on size and weight. Although that golden generation of ‘90s bodybuilders weren’t exactly bosom buddies they did hang out together backstage and on European tours. Nasser was different; he seemed to prefer his own company and although classed as a loner he never seemed lonely.
Testing for diuretics took place at the 1996 Mr. Olympia staged in Chicago and at the athletes meeting 48 hours before the contest Nasser excused himself about three times to use the rest room. As he came back for the final time he brushed past me, shot me an impish grin and said, “Yes, I know what you’re thinking. The answer is yes.” On the night of the contest he was placed third, but 48 hours later when the test results came back his sample was found to be positive and he was disqualified. He told me, “I gambled and lost. But I’m not going to cry about it. I can’t -- the diuretics make that impossible.”
At the 1997 Olympia he was runner-up with many in attendance thinking he had ended Yates Sandow run. At the 1998 Arnold his 280 pounds finished second to Flex Wheeler’s 224 pounds, and I found myself writing, “Standing next to each other, Flex looked like Nasser’s lunch.”

With the 1998 Olympia title being up for grabs due to Yates’ retirement, Nasser had great hopes of taking over as bodybuilding’s top man, but Ronnie Coleman spoiled that party and the previous year’s runner-up was third. A few months later he won the 1999 Arnold but that sixth pro victory really was the last hurrah for one of the most enigmatic characters to ever liven up the bodybuilding landscape. His physique and results fell away and his last contest was 14th place at the 2005 Europa Supershow.
As his standings faltered there were accusations that he used synthol in his delts and one time he was hospitalized for an infection in that area. He brushed it off as a “Staph infection,” and also cited “scar tissue” as the cause. Years later he did admit he used Esiclene. During that long – sad to watch -- deteriorating winter of his career Nasser was often asked if he had any thoughts of retiring. He would, respond,” I’m tired of being asked that stupid question. I don't know. Do you know when you're going to retire? Or when you're going to die? Or when you're going to have children? When I know I'm going to retire, I'll announce it, but until then, I don't know."
After the end of his career Nasser became increasingly critical and bitter over the years about the structure of bodybuilding, and how he felt he had not been given his just desserts. It was not an opinion I shared, and he knew it.

THE LAST TIME
It was March 3, 2006, in Columbus Ohio, the night before that year’s Arnold Classic. I found myself in the bar of the Westin Hotel with Nasser. He sipped on a diet coke and I nursed a Johnnie Walker Black. We spoke for maybe three hours and reminisced about former years and discussed many non-bodybuilding subjects. The evening was free of tension and rancor.
That was the last occasion we spoke; we never had any more contact. It was an enjoyable evening when I re-united with the old – which is to say the young – Nasser. A Nasser eager to share a joke and ready to find humor amid the unpredictable world of bodybuilding. The Nasser of that evening is the one I will remember. Rest in peace, my friend.

Peter McGough has been one of the very best editors, writers and respected people in the industry. He was editor of Flex Magazine for a number of years, the one that brought up and talked about Dorian Yates when no one knew him, and his vast knowledge of the people in the industry is incredible (a few know that much, like Lonnie Teper, Steve Wennerstrom, Joe Roark). When AMI and Peter parted ways, he retired and moved out to Florida from Woodland Hills, and today, writes for MD.
I am not saddened by Joe Weiders death because he lived until he was 92. But Nasser died far too young and I didn't see it coming. He was a big part of getbig. Was there no indications that something could have been wrong with nasser? im a little surprised as we all are, there seemed to be nothing wrong with him and poof its over.

- where did he die? I heard egypt, san diego...
- what happened in the hours before he died. I heard, he was asleep, he was in a gym and taken to a hospital, ..
- how did he look like in the last months-was he sickly looking, normal
- did he know he was pretty sick..

One might be curious about some of the details surrounding someone's passing. However, it is exceedingly impolite to question their loved ones regarding this. If they want you to know, they will volunteer the information. Moreover, unless you were his close friend, you really are not entitled specifics as to the when, where and why of how he died.

It is rude because our culture implies that it is. Read the obituaries in the newspaper. Very few of them state how or why a person died.
Granted, a lot of folks in the bodybuilding culture use PED's. No doubt they are curious to have proof as to whether they are responsible for another bodybuilders passing.
I think folks can draw some conclusions on their own. I simply isn't healthy to weight nearly 300 lbs. unless perhaps you are 10' tall. Even then, larger people are more prone to health issues regardless of their height and whether there weight is muscle weight or fat. My brother-in-law died relatively young from a heart attack. He was 6'7" tall and relatively lean. Still I would guess he weighed in the neighborhood of 300 lbs. Unfortunately our hearts aren't designed to support this much size regardless of why on is this large. Kidney failure has many causes, no doubt being very large has an ill effect on our kidneys too.

nasser trained with me once and did some cardio and he was training constantly during his stay with another guy who lives close to his house.. i saw him only 2 times, each time we were spending together more than 7 hours and we were walking a lot and while eating he was eating all kinds of food.. he looked good and younger after losing weight.. and the man didnt tell me anything bad about his health..
we were supposed to train together again and i was calling to confirm the day to be answered by his dad with the sad news..
ya i asked him "what happened.. did he have any problems".. the man said it was a sudden death in his sleep.. and when i visited him later i told him that rumors on the net were talking about fatal kidney problems,.. he said "nasser had a problem in his kidney but was not threatening his life and couldnt be the reason,.. especially till the last moment he was very normal talking and joking with them".. so if you were in my place,.. you were going to continue and ask nasser's devastated parents "hey come on guys,.. tell me more details,.. sure you have more to say,.. i am very curios to know more details about the death of your son" ::) ::)

He always seemed like a funny dude who always liked to help his friends and fans without acting like he is better than anyone like most of the other pro bbs

man this is very true.. when i saw him he was talking about my things in details.. he said it before in flex magazine that he didnt like to talk about himself all the time and this is very true.. he gave me a new t shirt as a present and 14 big signed pics of him.. he even insisted on giving him names of some of my best friends to sign some pics for them.. he was telling me "sherief, you are really like my brother" and i am sure he meant it.. i consider myself very lucky.. he was one of the greatest personalities i have ever seen..

Guillermo and Nasser were good friends in the early 2000's but hardly spoke in his last 6 years or so, maybe once every 1-2 years they'd speak. I know a ton of shit about Guillermo which I could post if I wanted to, and I'm tempted to since I know Nasser would not have approved of Guillermo spreading this kind of stuff for attention or to show that he was in the know. Either way whatever he is saying is all heresay as he never heard an ounce of it from Nasser himself.

Sorry to disappoint you. Nobody is perfect, least of all me. I agree with you that this thread should be about Nasser passing and not the digressions I sometimes fall prey to.
When it comes to nasser bobs will lie left right and center. Plenty of people pointed out that nasser was having health issues awhile back. There was one poster who made a thread about it nasser having heart issues recently. As usual bobs tried to cover it up but that poster turned out to be right. Remember when gh15 called coach "twister"? Well that title suits bobs more because when it comes to his two favorite topics - islam and nasser - he is known to twist his stories to cover up the truth.
Reminds me of the time when the accusations of nasser selling posing trunks on his site started making rounds on getbig. Bobs hotly denied it claiming he speaks to nasser often and nassser would never resort to selling his things online. Eventually someone posted evidence on this site and twister bobs quickly changed his stance.
Whoever this Tom is his statement conflicts with the image of nasser bober is trying portray on getbig so bobers response is to attack toms story. Its amazing that even after nassers passing he still resorts to twisting the truth.
Its a safe bet that this tom's story is accurate because it matches the accounts others have given in the past. I'd be more inclined to believe someone who idoesnt have a raging mancrush for nasser and is willing to lie at every opportunity to cover up nassers misdeeds.
It is not immoral to enquire about how someone died and it is certainly not "cold".
That being said, the people in this argument, HERE mostly fall into two, self interested groups.

We've said what Nasser's family has told about his death and the cause, if anyone doesn't like the answer for whatever reason I could not care any less. Anyone who thinks that us giving his family's official account of what happened amounts to "covering up" or "lying" can go fuck themselves.
For anyone who is unsatisifed with "the fog" then feel free to try to contact the family yourself and ask for more. If you weren't close enough to Nasser during his life to now contact his family to discuss what happened then it means its none of your business anyway.

I had just come to accept that Mat Duvall was gone when cyberspace erupted with the news that my old friend, IFBB pro Nasser El Sonbaty, had passed away. At first I was hit with the news like everyone else and put my condolences up on Facebook. I had communicated with Nasser a few months ago and all seemed well, so this news was certainly a shock. But, remember, this was not the first time Nasser was reported dead. So I immediately started digging for facts.
As people started getting back to me I was confronted with no less than four (so far) reported scenarios: The first was that Nasser was hit by a milk truck and killed in Switzerland. The second was that he was in Egypt and contracted malaria which caused a kidney infection and he died there; supposedly he was in Egypt training a client. The third was that Nasser never woke up from a nap in a hotel in Amsterdam; an apparent heart attack. And, the fourth was that Nasser died in San Diego of liver cancer. The times of his death varied greatly too. From a “a couple of months ago” to just the other day. And, of course, there is the usual band of internet idiots who immediately blamed steroids.
Not withstanding the steroid morons, working back up the list I’m fairly sure the cancer story isn’t true, because when I talked to him he didn’t have liver cancer. Assuming having liver cancer is something he probably wouldn’t forget to tell me, if he didn’t have liver cancer a few months ago he couldn’t have died from it last week.
Dying in a hotel room in Amsterdam from a heart attack is also false. I asked a friend of mine who lives in Holland and speaks several of the appropriate languages to scour the news over thee and see if there were any reports of a giant man being found dead in a hotel room. There were some “interesting” stories about other things, but nothing to confirm that Nasser died in a hotel in Amsterdam; surely something like that would have hit at least a local news outlet, but nothing.
Being hit by a milk truck in Switzerland can’t possibly be true for two reasons: first, the “milk trucks” in Switzerland are these little plastic electric things that go 25 KPH. If one of those hit Nasser it would be demolished. You’d need a dustpan to pick it up. And, secondly, my Dutch friend also searched the news services in Switzerland and Germany (where Nasser was born) and could not dig up what should have been at least a headline on a local news wire. That leaves us with the malaria scenario in Egypt. And that one, unfortunately, carries some weight.
First, Nasser was probably in Egypt. He missed the 25th reunion of his fellow Arnold Classic winners at this years ASC, the consensus being that he said he was in Egypt, which would not be inconceivable because Nasser is half Egyptian and goes to Egypt frequently, has friends, clients, business, etc. there. But, could a little tiny mosquito weighing less than a gram take out a healthy 125 kilogram dude? Does anybody even get malaria anymore? It just sounds a little too exotic and far fetched, not to mention unverifiable.
Why am I doubting Nasser’s death? First of all, ANY news that comes out of Egypt is suspect. Beyond that, Nasser told me something once that stuck in my head – it was something to the effect that, other than toying with the haters on the message boards, he really didn’t care about bodybuilding anymore. Remember, Nasser – a former ASC winner - also missed the 20th anniversary of the ASC. Nasser’s outlook on bodybuilding had become very cynical. We had several long and in depth conversations about it and I’m convinced bodybuilding today, along with the entire community surrounding it, meant very little to him anymore.
You also have to remember that Nasser is a very, very intelligent guy. He has three Masters Degrees: Political Science, History and Sociology; and, he speaks seven languages fluently. He is at home in practically any social situation in any city in Europe and in many Muslim countries. He is also very well off financially. Unlike the other top level bodybuilders of the roaring 90s, Nasser wasn’t spending his money on exotic cars, crazy girlfriends and expensive condos. He drove a little piece of crap green thing for years and lived very modestly. Nasser was very humble and very low key. He saved almost all his money from bodybuilding and invested it with a foreign investment firm that ultimately set him up very comfortably for the rest of his life.
He, however, downplayed this and drove message board threads into the five digits, posting pics of him wearing an ACE Hardware vest feigning working as a sales clerk in a hardware store. He did the same with a gas station attendant uniform. He had multiple message board accounts as well. He told me he got such a kick out of the riots he incited online. To him it was mediocre entertainment - psychological chess being played at a severe disadvantage. The entire online hate patrol didn’t stand a chance. Those threads were almost painful to read.
So, here we have an incredibly intelligent, multi-lingual guy who is comfortable almost anywhere in the world with limitless funds and no ties to the US, staying allegedly in Egypt, where he allegedly dies from malaria – a report of which from a reliable Egyptian source has so far proven impossible to confirm. So, while the internet says he’s dead, I’m holding out hope (never believe everything you read online).
I think it is entirely possible that Nasser, approaching his 50th birthday, just got tired of “bodybuilding” and decided to walk away from it. Knowing Nasser, I just wouldn’t put it past him to either start a rumor about his death or feed into one started by someone else (as they have before) and just let it go. He could disappear in at least half of the Middle East, Europe and former Soviet countries. Nasser could be living in a gorgeous house on Palm Island off the coast of Dubai or a smoking luxury condo in Sarajevo or a nice country house in Germany and none of us would ever know.
Right now, because of the paucity of any real proof or statements from his side, it doesn’t seem like Nasser died, it seems more like he disappeared. There isn’t even a message on his website or his Facebook page; surely his webmaster, assistant, someone, would have posted something. The pages just look abandoned.
In any case, Nasser is gone and it doesn’t appear as though he is ever coming back. I liked him too much to want to believe he’s dead, and I knew him well enough to know he might not be. So, if you're reading this Nasser, thanks for softening the blow. Your intellect and resourcefulness gives me hope that, while you have left our world, you are still out there somewhere, probably having yourself a good laugh.

I just hope that what I picked up from one of them is true and right about now you have a smile on your face because you knew if anyone could figure this out it would be me. Wherever you are Nasser, thank you for the gigantic contribution you made to professional bodybuilding. For a guy who came out of nowhere Nasser really shook up the frontline. So much so that he is one of the few true uncrowned Mr. Olympia's and will forever live among the legends of the sport.

All jokes aside, Nasser was a great friend. Our friendship was a reality check in many ways. Like a big brother I never had who took the time to put things in perspective and had the right to do so. I'm sure big-bobs can say the same.

Pretty much Dwayne Johnson is the only one right now who's making bank after being a wrestler. Unlike bodybuilders, wrestlers do have to have a tiny drop of personality to make it in the industry, since contracts are always short-term except for the top guys.
What Nasser did for a living before he died isn't entirely clear. It looks like he owned or managed a garage/gas station, from the photos on his side picking up garbage or changing oil. I highly doubt he had mechanical aptitude, though. That's basically a trade you have to learn. He also never lost his pro-era size, which suggests he had the money or fronting-abilities to keep his stash coming on a regular basis. You could speculate he went to Egypt to get away from his creditors. I'd believe that.
AFAIK there's still no proof he died, but it's unlikely to be staged. He liked living in southern Californa. I doubt he'd just disappear for a year like that. And the cause of death is very plausible for a guy who's almost 50 and still walks around at 300.

Still not as fast as your new car but the mustang is so light it hits corners better. I have had a corvette ZR1 and sold it. it was slower then the 5.0. I actually prefer a Toyota Tacoma in my state since it rains 300 days a year and sports cars with tops suck in my state.

I'm not disagreeing as it seems you really know what you're talking about and when it comes to scoring I don't, so I'm just curious. But the contest is won on points. So like in boxing, you can win 7 out of 12 rounds, but if the 5 rounds you lost were judged 10-7 because you got knocked down twice in each round, and the rounds you won were close 10-9 rounds, the final result would be 113-105 for the the guy who actually won less rounds but had more points. If Dorian were hit harder by the judges for the horrible double bi with a ton of negative symmetry points because judges decided they didn't want to see that on a bodybuilding stage, Nasser could have won on points, despite Dorian winning the other rounds. Again, just correct me where I am mistaken, I'm not obsessed with the result but do think Nasser won in 97.
