You've no doubt seen the 225lb DL for reps contest on the G&O board and in light of that we feel it necessary to have a REAL DL contest!
The GetBig.com 500lb Deadlift for reps competition is ON! Sponsored by AtLargeNutrition.com (http://AtLargeNutrition.com) & PROWRISTSTRAPS.com (http://PROWRISTSTRAPS.com)
The rules are simple:
- Videos must be submitted before February 28th.
- You must be able to see the whole movement from floor to lockout in your video
- Please list your screen name somewhere in the video. A piece of paper with your name, the date, and GetBig.com written on it will do fine.
- 5 Plates and a 2.5 on the side is the only acceptable setup. Please make this visible.
- Just do as many as possible in 3 minutes without ever letting go of the bar!
- Rest where you choose, top or bottom, but you must keep your hands on the bar and feet flat on the floor at all times.
- Must be a GetBig regular with at least 100 posts.
- Must be conventional, no sumo. Stiff legged and romanian are acceptable as long as its not sumo stance and the weight starts on the floor.
- No gloves, hooks, briefs, or suits. Can use knee wraps, belt, and wrist wraps (if you must).
- No tape or tacky allowed.
- In the event of a tie, the judges will decide upon a tie breaker suited to this contest.
- Prizes will be awarded for 1st-3rd place. Prizes include:
1st-3rd place will recieve a surprise gift from PROWRISTSTRAPS.com (http://PROWRISTSTRAPS.com)!
1st place - $100 At Large Nutrition Products
2nd place - $75 At Large Nutrition Products
3rd place - $50 At Large Nutrition Products (free s&h inside the continental US for all 3)

I can do 5 or 6 good clean reps with 405 lbs (my small hands necessitate straps but otherwise my form is good), what would that equate to with 500 lbs? I don't do very low reps so I haven't ever tried five plates.
Would I be able to get a second rep?

We have people in the UK getting in on this? Well, do the lift with 228kg and we will have our judges review the footage to confirm. Still go with the 5 plate setup, just use a larger outter weight that will bring you to 228kg. I know its a pound higher but what are ya gonna do?

I usually deadlift after squatting, so this week I tried skipping the squats altogether and managed to get 11 reps with 405 (that's 405 by 11 using wrist straps but with no resting on the ground between reps).
Would that mean I could manage a single with 500 lbs???

put 500lbs on the bar and try to lift it off the floor.
if you fail you have your answer.

this is more along the lines of strongman style of competing where you have x amout of time to perform a certain lift as many times as you can. This is the powerlifting/strongman forum...what's stupid about having strongman rules? ???

Correct! I KNOW nobody is gonna hit 500 for 3 straight minutes but this isnt about ridiculous rep totals as much as it is about calling on your inner strength and endurance. Its a mental game more than anything. Most will rep it out for a minute or two and bow out, but the truly strong will get down and regroup for one or two more because they know it could mean all the difference in the end!

Yes it is tap and go, just as it is in a Strongman comp. The tap MUST be obvious, none of this "I heard the plates rattle, its a tap" bullshit! KLANK and the weight comes up, thats it.

I've done sets with 405 for 20 in under a minute and 315 for 30 but I can't imagine 405 for 30 reps good lord..maybe for sets of 10 divided up with little rest between but no way in hell for a continuous set. You da man.. no way I'm going for that haha

Watch Magoos video where he did close to 30 reps with 225 in 3 minutes...he said he was about to have a heart attack...not from the weight but the cardio workout. I can't imagine 405 trying to go that fast

Hey Jason, thanks for asking. It's healing up pretty good. Just waiting for that 'twelve week' mark so I can can really start at it again. It's atrophied quite a bit and doesn't look nearly the same. I just can't wait to get back to training heavy.

The most reps i've seen a guy do was 12 reps with 495 non-stop, if anyone beats that they are world class IMO.

Ahh, cool. Well, best of luck with its recovery. If you get a chance, PM me your mailing address and I will send you some ETS. You might find it helps with the recovery of your biceps. Nick Winters used it after a pec tear and he felt it sped his recovery and Kara Bohegian used it after her knee surgery to the same end.

if you have one next year i might be strong enough by then, i'm just now pulling 315 for sets of 15, so in a year i should be back to at least 495 for reps. the knee feels great but my surgeon doesn't want me getting crazy until summer 2008.

Ulna was trashed. Actually, and Im not sure why I cant tell on the xray, all 3 bones had fractures. The olecranon was reattached, then "died" and ended up being removed. My tricep was advanced and attached lower on the ulna. It doesnt hyperextend, but has a pretty weet vagus and valgus defecit. Makes for some neat pics. And thank you for he support.

500 lbs for one..no hitch..not pretty but i "ego" it up for one. I did it wrapped. I hit 405 for reps..went to 455 and then hit 500lbs for one. I'm still a long way from 500lbs for 10 or more in 3 minutes..if i can even do it.

I don't have to provide proof until 19 Feb.....its 500lbs...i would think a world class weightlifter like u would be able to pull that easily. We could even tape a ho-ho to it and I'd bet u could power clean it. ...that attitude ends lifting careers. There is a more to the deadlift than simply heaving a weight off the floor any which way, even if it means playing tiddly-winks with your discs.

I've been doing sets of 6-8 on STIFF leg'd deads no problem lately...so I project about 12-15..any more than that and I'll be very happy. You're just a badass if you get in the teens no problem but it will be a struggle for ME that's for sure. I won't be using straps though.

yes...platform deads are great for strengthening speed and power off the floor on a regular dead. Do them for a month and see the difference. They really force you to learn to drive with your legs.

Partial squats work nicely as well. My left knee has been acting up a bit so I am avoiding heavy partials right now.
Actually, I only did the 225 for reps once. I then did 315 for reps and that was it for the high rep stuff.

Not much trouble with the shoulder in pulling, but it pinches on the way down in bench OR when getting in squat position. Feeling much better than before!

I have gone to a 300 stone with just chalk but past that MUST use tacky. Get some tacky and you will roll a 350 right on up I bet!

Whats wrong with slow? I was being a bit cautious as well due to my shoulder and no pulling in almost a month. But I still pull pretty slow on a regular basis I think?
Maybe if I get my speed up I will get 10 reps? I know I can get 7-8 if I work on it for a couple weeks.

hey man we've been over this... force=massxacceleration..the faster you pull the more force you generate which makes the lift easier. Which is why you have to be explosive with weights on the deadlift especially off the floor. The slower you go the more work you have to do. I bet if you sped it up just a little more you could've gotten a few more reps but yeah man I hear you on the shoulder!
i noticed i'm still fighting my bnech press near my chest..i've since stopped that and my elbow feels 10x's better!

Yes it could be! Though I will be doing it right. I have done this before and it really helped me in the stones and farmers. I am going to my 3 day split for a few weeks (lower dynamic, upper dynamic, events for reps OR max, recovery exercise between workouts). This is scaled back a bit from the way I originally had it configured. Oh, and I wont be completely dropping squats out of my regimen, just prioritizing DL.
Any advice is always welcome though! Suggestions?

thanks, appreciate the positive but, man, i didn't realise i would be so retarded on this lift. i've been pulling a shit load from shins, knees and thought, yeah, 500, piece of cake and figured i'd just throw something in there last minute because i really don't believe it's necessary to pull from the ground unless you're a p/lifter. i mean, apparently even the westside guys think the movement basically sucks in training, so i figured i would just train as usual and then throw in something when i got around to it.
well, i was wrong, as you can see, this was a bitch for me and now i'm curious as hell as to why. i mean, it just felt awkward as hell and fucking killed me after. mind you, i didn't even warm up. just rushed out and figured i'd save my energy for some reps - boy was i deluded. when i got to the top i thought wtf was that shaky thing so i let the fucker down slow and thanked christ i got out still able to walk.
much repect to everyone else who made it look so...much less retarded. got my ass kicked being an arrogant fuck. well deserved i say. ;D

d) maybe it points out some weak points in your training...and want to know what I figured out the other day when it comes to my legs shaking? It means you're not pushing them inot the floor or using them...you're actually relaxing them on the lift. I'll show you in my deadlift video I made the other day and point a few things out that dawned on me.

This will probably be my last post before I head off on holiday (waiting for the taxi), but tonight, tonight at the gym I pulled 500 lbs... only got one slow straining rep but it was a 500 lb deadlift nonetheless.
Soon as I have some time when I get back next week, I'll post a vid of my attempt at 405 x 15 (although 12 is more realistic).

i know plenty of shorter guys who can get 10 reps or so (touch and go) with a weight, but then only three reps when as little as 20 pounds is added.
by contrast, i'm 6'2" with short arms. if i can get 2, i can get 20 pounds more for a single.

that could be interesting from a raw strength perspective as there is primarily movement around one joint and it's probably a very good equalizer from a technical and assistance perspective.
i hate this reps shit. reps are too subjective in my book. i mean, i realize it's an incredible exercise in self torture to do umpteen reps of 315 but then you have issues of how fast you do the eccentric/bounce/rom, etc etc. besides, i'm pretty sure i'd do myself an injury trying to compete seriously with heavy weight for reps. i'm not exactly a technical expert and my attention span is quite short ;D.

WT is a beast. Pegg doesnt pull conventional typically. I will be doing another vid even though the comp is over because I was disappointed with my result. Im aiming for 10 this time.
