The NCAA Will Now Take Away Touchdowns for Taunting
NCAA conjures up new rules for taunting on touchdowns

By JOSH ALPER
Updated 12:30 PM PDT, Thu, Apr 15, 2010

Say this for the folks in charge of NCAA football: They don't much care about being popular. If they did, they'd probably take an extra second or two to stop and think about how the people who keep them in business feel about the decisions they make.

If they did that, they probably would have left Thursday's change to the rules about taunting on the drawing board and focused on ways to actually make the game more enjoyable. The NCAA Playing Rules Oversight Panel approved a change to the way taunting penalties are assessed and they will now take away touchdowns if a player is deemed to be taunting before crossing the end zone.

That sound you don't hear is football fans turning to one another and saying "Thank the Lord, because I was worried that referees weren't going to have enough leeway to influence games with their own interpretations of the intentions of other human beings."

The problem with this rule, which goes into effect for the 2011 season, is that there is absolutely no guideline for how it gets enforced. Do you throw a flag if a running back raises his fist in triumph with no defenders in sight? Or is there going to be a zone of taunting that must be penetrated before a penalty occurs? What if a player dives into the end zone between a pair of defenders who may or may not be close enough to make a play?

The answer will be different in every game because this rule turns every NCAA referee into Potter Stewart, the Supreme Court judge who famously said that pornography was hard to define but he knew it when he saw it. Sports rules aren't supposed to work that way outside of figure skating.

The subjectivity inherent in applying this new standard is going to wind up affecting games, seasons and careers for reasons apparent only to the small group of old guys in suits who actually think the elation of 19-year-olds is a problem.

Like we said, they don't care about being popular. It would be swell if they cared about football, though.

really really bad rule. What happened to 15 yards on the next kickoff? Actually taking away touchdown's? really?

just to clarify they will have the power to take away a touchdown from the team or just from the players stats?

yet another reason to hate college football...

That's a terrible rule.  I understand the need to stop guys from acting like fools, but this is too much.  Let them play already.

Anyone see Jake Locker get penalized last year (?) for tossing the ball over his head after scoring a TD?  He wasn't taunting, but the rule gave the ref the discretion to throw a flag.  I see the same kind of craziness happening with this rule.

No, no, no....A.J. Green was much worse who plays for Georgia just looked at his own Crowd and he wears a visor, got a flag for just looking into the crowd and he was just walking away.  ::) ::) I thought to myself, WTF?? Then the SEC conference apologized later on but seriously.....

this is just horrible, I understand penalizing them on the kick off but this is giving refs direct influence on scoring and at their sole discretion!!! college football blows

on a good not the NFL is going to the college overtime scheme after 2 overtimes...no more moves like donovan mcnabbs  ;D

pros go foreward...college backward...

Really don't mind them trying to get rid of the garbage punk-ass taunting, but already the refs are way too inconsistent calling it....this will just make it worse.

How about just eject the player, which very rarely happens.  But even with that, a ref in the booth should review it to avoid that crap they called at UGA and the Locker call.

I'm wondering just who are these types of rule changes being made for?

Like who really gives a sh*t if a guy is taking one to the house down the sideline and he is pointing to the college fans in the crowd going wild ,whose folks are spending 100's of thousands for them to attend the school ,going nuts, and nobody is within 40 yards of him b/c he runs a 3.8 40?

Now I'm sure this guy will get flagged most likely b/c I honestly can't tell you the last time I've seen a guy "show up" somebody deion sanders style in college.

Off top of my head I can't remember too many from last year. I do remember excessive celebration where the team mates actually are happy their teammate scored though. LOL wow.

This is what I want to know what if another team mate taunts an opponent before the TD is scored? can they still take away the TD or is this only for the ball carrier?

exactly. b/c that happens a lot on the field. You are taking one to the house and one of your team mates is giving the business to the sideline or the LB that you ran over or shook out his shoes...will they be looking for that.....most likely not and the only way they'll see it is if they (ref) just so happens to be in the area.

one of those "we'll see" rules that really can be called at any time for anything basically.

Heard it was a panel of coaches who requested this.  It has been a long time since I saw the taunting at the Miami vs Texas Cotton bowl level, if any of you remember that.  I was young and thought it was actually funny at the time.....

Honestly, I have a much bigger problem seeing players jaw at a sideline, example after a big hit, or even stomping over a player on the ground after a play, etc.... than I do with a mild celebration after a TD.

BINGO! ...and this is why I truly don't understand who this rule change is supposed to cater?

I do remember that UM vs UT game...yes it was very funny as hell (honestly I felt the one announcer was taking the antics WAAAY too damn seriously....it seemed to consume him almost the the point where the game was being played and he just wouldn't stfu about sh*t that happened the first half) ....anyway....

Were are the rule changes for what you just mentioned, meeting up in the middle of the damn field about to start brawls, jawing at coaches on the sidelines, looking over talking crap to sidelines after big hits...etc....hell even though I enjoy everything I just listed.....that is WAAAY over the top vs a guy tearing ass up the sideline for a TD pumping his fist or holding up a no.1 or something.

Exactly.  How can they deem that as such a horrible offense, but let the other stuff go?  The before game crap should have never been allowed to happen in the first place.  Coaches need to control that stuff.  And TV shows it as a way to pump up the audience, and then the announcers whine if a guy does a small celebration?
