Pec tear consequences
« on: October 16, 2008, 08:05:43 AM »
Are pec tears simply cosmetic?  Are there any real consequences to having them?  Are you weaker for having a tear?  Can you feel it when a tear is occurring?  What happens if you never get it fixed?  Does it get worse?  Anyone know?

don't worry Bay you'll never get one since you don't lift weights.

This is a good question (pec tear consequences).

Many BB seem to have them... and it doesn't seem to impact their training.  Does it impact contest placing?

It should impact the placings if its not fixed and takes away from symmetry. I know people who have torn a pec and benched more after the tear, so I would say no it doesn't have to effect training. But I'm sure it depends on the tear.

I tore one ten years ago. I always hated benching but i had started competiting in powerlifting and my deads and squats were very strong. Never got it fixed. Took years before i could do a wide variety of exercises on chest although it's ok now i train a little lighter and slow the reps down.

Have a hole in the chest, not as bad as the guy in the pic. Mine doesn't go as far in and is deeper. It hasn't got any worse. Yes i heard 3 cracks in the pec as i went down with the weight. The tear mainly happened because of overtraining, i had a powerlifting coach tell me i should bench twice a week but being young i wanted to do everything else as well so it all added up.

Learnt a lot though. Haven't had any major injuries since, no bad back, no bad knees, stuffed my elbows when i was 17 doing heavy tri extensions but lifting lighter and slower for a while fixed them up. Sometimes you need a wake up call to learn your limits.

From what I read, peac tars ned to be iced up ASAP and to see a doctor immediately.

If you prolong the wait, the tendon can attachitself in a different location and it would be next to impossible to re-attach it in the right place
