179 NYPD Officers Reportedly Retire In One Week Amid Crime Surge And Tension With Mayor De Blasio

New York Police Department officers are retiring at a staggering rate amid a crime surge in the city and growing tensions with Democratic New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio, the Hill reported Thursday.

In the last week, 179 NYPD officers have filed for retirement, which marks a 411% increase from 2019’s 35, according to the Hill.

The retirements follow violent riots that roiled the city, De Blasio’s decision to slash the NYPD budget and the decision to disband the anti-crime unit. Soon after the unit’s 600 plainclothes officers were reassigned to new roles, shootings in the city surged by more than 358% in mid-June.

DeBlasio's New York: No lives matter

NYC Communist Mayor Warren Wilhelm DeBlasio, to great fanfare and publicity, had a street mural painted outside Trump Tower on 5th Avenue.

Bill de Blasio plaints Black Lives Matter street mural ...

In typical fashion, DeBlasio was both self righteous and self aggrandizing:

“This is such an important moment for our city,” de Blasio told volunteers, who chanted, “Black lives matter!” while holding paint rollers. “We are making a statement today of what we value in New York City.”
Not everyone was pleased:
When he arrived around 11:30 a.m., two or three men shouted “douchebag de Blasio” at Hizzoner as he crossed the street.
And
As they worked, some passersby shouted at them, “Shame on you!,” with one woman yelling, “Hitler told us all lives didn’t matter, too!”
This is meant as a distraction from DeBlasio's complete failure as a mayor:
Sources previously blasted de Blasio for taunting Trump as the city grapples with a troubling spate of gun violence.
“Obviously he is doing it to antagonize the president,” the source told The Post when the plan was first announced.

“This is what he is concerned about while the city burns. What an amateur politician.”

Sticking it to the man. That mural  was going to solve everything- the riots, the racism, the violence.
Except it didn't.

New York City Police Department sources revealed there were 15 shootings in a 15-hour span in New York City over the weekend.
The New York Post spoke to several NYPD sources on Sunday who reported the spate of shootings, which includes a 21-year-old currently in the hospital after he was shot in the head in Brooklyn that morning while sitting in a car.

The number of shootings that took place in the city over the last week is more than triple the number of shootings that happened there this time last year. There have been 43 shootings in the last week, compared to 13 during the same time period in 2019.

This weekend’s shootings come as the city reports an overall spike in violent crimes. Over Independence Day weekend, there were 10 shootings and one person killed in a nine-hour span.

Another black baby died in the carnage:
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) – A 1-year-old boy was shot to death overnight near a playground in Brooklyn.
Police said the child was sitting in a stroller with a group of people having a barbecue when gunfire erupted.

Overall this weekend in NYC there were 22 shootings and 28 victims, including a 12 year old boy.
DeBlasio offered more pablum in response to the violence

NYC's most influential black politician calls for the NYPD's gun-hunting unit to be reinstated a month after it was disbanded because 'bad guys now think they can do whatever they want'
UK Daily Mail ^ | July 16, 2020 | Frances Mulraney

The Brooklyn Borough President has called for the return of the controversial NYPD anti-crime unit just a month after it was shut down due to anti-cop protests as shootings in the Big Apple continue to spike. Eric Adams, NYC's most influential black politician, claims that the plainclothes unit, whose job it was to get guns off the street, may need reform but should not have been completely eliminated. The former cop, who is running for mayor in 2021, said that the absence of the unit led 'bad guys' to believe they can do 'whatever you want'.

De Blasio: Kids Will Be in School 2-3 Times a Week, We’ll Have Childcare for 100,000 Kids
nypost ^ | 07/16/2020 | Ian Hanchett
Posted on 7/17/2020, 9:43:17

During a press conference on Thursday, New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio (D) stated that the city will have the typical child go to school in a classroom two or three times a week, but the city will provide childcare for 100,000 families to help those who can’t work if they don’t have childcare.

De Blasio said that there will be a “blended learning approach, where the typical child goes two or three days a week to school, in the classroom.”

De Blasio: ‘Fewer People in Our Jails than Any Time Since WWII – and We Are Safer for It and Better for It’
cnsnews.com ^ | 7/16/2020 | Craig Bannister
Posted on 7/17/2020, 11:58:3

As gun violence and murders continued to spike in New York City, Democrat Mayor Bill de Blasio declared Wednesday that his city is “safe” and “better” because the number of criminals in jail is at the lowest level since 1946.

Mayor de Blasio made the claim at a signing ceremony for six new police reform bills:

“People said that if we reduced incarceration and ended the era of mass incarceration, we would be endangered. It was the other way around, my friends. We now have fewer people in our jails than any time since World War II and we are safer for it and better for it.”

But, as CNSNews.com has reported, the number of murders, shooting, and burglaries in New York City all jumped in June:

“According to the NYPD, there has been a 130 percent increase in the number of shooting incidents across New York City between June 1 and June 30 compared to the same time last year. The number of people murdered increased 30 percent, and the number of burglaries rose 118 percent. The number of auto thefts rose 51 percent.”

Cuomo blames de Blasio’s Rikers releases, anti-cop attitude for NYC crime wave
nypost.com ^ | July 28, 2020 | Bernadette Hogan and Julia Marsh
Posted on 7/29/2020, 1:55:53

Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Tuesday he was “very concerned” about the “devastating” crime wave sweeping the Big Apple, casting blame on anti-police sentiment, Mayor Bill de Blasio’s decision to release inmates from Rikers Island during the COVID-19 pandemic and the cratering economy.

“I am very concerned about it,” the governor said during a press call from Albany Tuesday.

There were 47 shootings just last week — a 176-percent jump over the 17 tallied during the same period last year, according to NYPD statistics.

“The result is intolerable and is devastating and is, long term as we’re trying to get New York City back up and running, it’s also a negative in getting New York up to speed,” Cuomo said.

Cuomo listed a strained relationship between the community and the police following the George Floyd demonstrations, coronavirus-related releases from Rikers, and the economy as all contributing to rising crime.

“The situation with the NYPD and the tension with the protests groups and community groups is a factor. How that is playing out? I’m not sure exactly that anybody knows, but I know the NYPD feel they are under significant pressure, which they are. And that tension is in the mix,” he said.

A mad rush for the exits as New York City goes down the tubes
New York Post ^ | August 11, 2020 | Post Editorial Board
Posted on 8/12/2020, 7:12:10 AM by karpov

It’s not just a few Upper West Siders who are fleeing New York: Moving companies say they’re swamped with calls from residents looking to ditch the city — even though the COVID crisis has waned.

One likely reason: The virus was but the last straw; New Yorkers are fed up with the shootings and lootings, homelessness on the streets, sub-par online schools, sky-high taxes and the sheer obliviousness of pols like Mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo.

On Sunday, The Post highlighted families who’ve given up on the Upper West Side — now teeming with junkies, the homeless, convicts and others — and are headed for greener pastures outside Gotham.

Meanwhile, Fox Business reports that moving companies are seeing a continuing surge in citywide business that began soon after the COVID outbreak. And while many of those fleeing may come from Manhattan, the trend is surely not confined to the Upper West Side.

It’s been “insanely busy,” Roadway Moving President Ross Sapir told Fox. Indeed, he says this has been the busiest summer ever for the company. “For the last three months, we couldn’t keep up with demand.”

Oz Moving says the number of relocations continues to rise at a “substantial rate.” It was booked to capacity earlier in the year than in any of the previous 27 years.

United Van Lines, too, cites a whopping 95 percent spike, year over year, in interest in moving out of Manhattan between May and July, versus just 19 percent nationally.

Sure, many of those who’ve headed out were merely trying to escape COVID, which socked the city in the spring. Some may even return; a reported spike in storage-space business is a sign they will.

New Yorkers revel in virus-fueled gold mine of free street furniture
NY Post ^
Posted on 8/26/2020, 11:12:32 AM by SJackson

One man’s trash is another man’s treasure: This spring and summer, the adage rings especially true.

The hotter months were always peak times for Big Apple move-ins and -outs. But standard relocations coupled with apartment purges by those fleeing the city’s COVID-19 outbreak have created a gold mine of curbside gems put out for the taking.

From midcentury furniture to one-off antiques, home decor of the highest caliber has been plentiful — and free — for anyone lucky and quick enough to pluck them off the concrete. (Not to mention strong and canny enough to lug their loot home.)

From March on, as thrift shops and secondhand sellers remained shuttered due to the coronavirus, many New Yorkers came to rely on the informal give-and-take economy known as stooping.

The practice of sharing and snagging discarded freebies has gotten a boost from Instagram accounts dedicated to promoting pieces out on the sidewalk and ripe for the picking, like StoopingNYC and CurbAlertNYC.

The anonymous Brooklyn duo who run StoopingNYC say the pandemic has led to a ballooning following (now at 46,000 and counting) as well as an uptick in submissions for full-apartment furniture dumps as opposed to one-off finds.

Over the past few months, the couple has also seen emails and direct messages shift from followers who send in photos of items they stumble across in the street to followers who are hauling their own goods to the curb.

From 'I love New York' to 'I leave New York': The party is over for the Big Apple
American Thinker ^ | 08/31/2020 | Silvio Canto, Jr.
Posted on 8/31/2020, 9:31:45 AM by SeekAndFind

On a personal basis, a family member and spouse just moved out of New York.  He works in the theater, and there is not much work these days in the Big Apple.  As they told me on the phone, the place is deader than a doornail.  By the way, they also told me that you have to wait weeks to rent a moving van.  I guess a lot of people are leaving.

We learned that New York City is about to lay off 22,000 of its approximately 330,000 city employees, according to Forbes:

The Wall Street Journal reported that roughly 22,000 government workers need to be let go to close a $9 billion deficit that continues to grow.

The story goes on to say there may be more because the deficit is getting bigger.

New York heavily relies upon its bustling commerce, entertainment and social activities to draw in and keep people. Without restaurants, concerts, museums, sporting events and people commuting into Manhattan from the other boroughs (New York City comprises of five boroughs), the city has quickly changed. Residents have fled the city.

As people ceased commuting into New York, worked remotely, businesses shut their doors and social activities have halted, revenues to companies have plummeted. As businesses of all sizes saw their profits evaporate, the city government received significantly less in tax collection.

Naturally, no one likes to see layoffs.  After all, these are humans, not just numbers.

Mayor Bill de Blasio will blame the virus and naturally President Trump.  He won't blame himself or policies driving people out of New York for years.

It will be fun to watch how these liberal city council members deal with economic facts, the public-sector unions, and the reality that the party is over.

Where do these New Yorkers move for better jobs and how do they know they'll find them?
