grad degreees and phd 's are given out like candy these days,especially ones paid for by the govt. They are meaninglesss. The schools(essentially just a business) are getting rich and the public is getting fooled.
It all depends on what school you get you degree from. A masters from some city school is a token degree to justify the city taking more tax dollars from hard working people to pay some lazy govt worker.
I would not be impressed by anyones credentials unless you know what school they earned their degree from.

That changes with geographic location. Maybe he is from Yonkers though, not sure. 70-80k still not enough for those putting their life on the line, especially in places like NY, Detroit,Baltimore etc..

true, in Mass. you have to work paid details to make anything close to 100 grand. It is like working a second job. Starting base salary is around 45-50,000. Also the higher the degree the more $$ you make. I'm wrapping up my B.S. and am looking at graduate school for that reason. I don't know how it is in other parts of the country, but here people see cops making alot of money but the ones who do work an extreme amount of OT. It's not the norm

DeKalb County, GA police to get highest starting pay in metro Atlanta
From The Atlanta Journal-Constitution, April 14, 2005
DeKalb Chief Executive Officer Vernon Jones said today he is raising starting pay for police officers to make them the highest paid among the five largest police departments in metro Atlanta.
Jones said the existing county budget will cover the new starting salary of $35,796 a year for both police officers and fire medics.
Fire medics have more medical training than some lower-paid classifications of firefighters, but the county Fire Rescue Department no longer hires new employees below the level of fire medic, said county government spokesman Burke Brennan.
Gwinnett County recently raised its starting police pay to $35,197, moving ahead of Cobb, DeKalb and Fulton levels and close to Atlanta's $35,472.
Jones' executive order raises DeKalb to the top of the list by giving starting police officers a raise of $1,368 a year and fire medics a raise of $1,002 a year.

Yonkers is a run-down town. Sure, the cost of living is higher than Boonefuck, MS but you can rent a 1BR apartment in the Bronx for $700/mo. which is all of 2 miles away. To gauge the price of living, gas and milk are both about $3.35/gallon here.
And McDonald's workers still make minimum wage. HTH! If you wanna be a cop, may I suggest Yonkers PD!!

in Suffolk county, the cops start at 60,000 and are making 100 grand in no time. and they do nothing but drive around in top of the line cars and equipment. They get special help with financing first homes and getting loans, and educations. It is a joke, half these guys are as dumb as brick walls.

I plan on taking the Nassua county pig exam if it's offered for the '08 year, I can still finish my bachelors part-time. The city one is crap, but you can work 2 years then go to some other state and make 50-60 a year easy. Most pig jobs pay 50-60 or more after 5 years of service. It's not bad, but I can understand you being all internet billionaires, it's probably nothing.

I live in Pa went threw Act 120, its the training needed in Pa to become a municipal police officer. I'm also very close to one of the larger cities in Pa and got to be friends with allot of cops doing ride alongs for the academy. None of them made over 40,000 a year overtime included. In Pa the State Police only start at 42,000 a year and you need a 4 year degree or equal military time to even take the test. It may be different elsewhere but where i live most cops can only get part time work that means no benefits and there are lucky to pull in 30,000.

Ed, you should see what the cops in my country have to face in terms of wage.
I live in Brazil. Cops here are in distinct classes: we have those that patrol the streets and go after that thief that is robbing the store. This kinda cop makes up to what would be equivalent to US$500,00....MONTHLY!!!!!!! This is the starting pay!!!!LOL!!!!
Then we have the class of cops that would be on the same level of US detectives. Those guys that investigate crimes, do survailance, set up drug busts, etc....this kind of cop makes up to US$ 1000,00, monthly. The head of each precint, which is called State Delegate starts making up to US$1500,00 , or 1700,00, at the beggining of carrer.
Then we have the equivalent of your FBI guys. Those are the top notch cops in the country, and only investigate federal crimes: money laundering, international drug dealing, etc.....the best salaries lie in there: They start making up to US$ 2500,00 and can end up making US$ 5000,00 monthly, at the end of their career.
So don't tell me those salaries you guys are making a mockery are near poverty line. If the police force in my country had THAT kind of wage, we would have the best police in the whole world, trust me.

some of you guys are nuts no patrol officer makes a base of 100,000 if they reach that total it is due to a HUGE amount of OT,like a second job. That income level is the exception, sergeants,, captains and such are different but even then huge overtime is involved.

Most nyc cops work 2 years and then bail to nassua or suffolk county..
Suffolk and nassua officers make like 80-90k base after like 7 years of service. With OT, they can easily go over 100k.

I know for a fact that pretty much every Chief in the Chicagoland area makes over 6 figures Fire/Police. Most departments in the Suburbs start in the low 50's and top out at high 70's after 5-7 years.

The typical pension for a union cop is somewhere between 50 and 80% of their last year's pay. That means you can work 20-25 years as a pig, and then sit back and collect 50K/year posting on Getbig. Life is good on the farm!

Richard Jones was with the Orange County, CA Sherriff's Department for a number of years and as you can see the salary structure is identified below. Also, last time I spoke to Richard Jones he was pursuing his MBA full time.

A Deputy Sheriff Trainee will be required to attend and satisfactorily complete the 28-week P.O.S.T. Certified Orange County Sheriff’s Training Academy. Upon successful completion of the academy, the Deputy Sheriff Trainee will be promoted to the position of Deputy Sheriff I.
Only those who possess the minimum requirements and score high enough on the supplemental form will be invited to the written exam.

Deputy Sheriff I – Entry Level Hourly rate: $28.50 Annual salary: $59,280 Maximum Hourly rate: $38.74 Annual salary: $80,579
Deputy Sheriff II – Maximum Hourly rate: $40.93 Annual salary: $85,134
