yeah Pudgy Stockton was the only woman going back then.  Sort of a Babe Dickenson (sp) of muscle beach era.

Actually Pudgy was not the only woman on the Muscle Beach scene back then. She was one of the three most popular though-the others were Paul Unger and Relna Brewer. They all did acrobatics, which was the main thing in those days, with weight training coming in second.

Paula also had a older sister named Rosalie and the both were very popular in the 40's and 50's.

But Pudgy and Paula were the big cheese's though for their day.

The two people who got me into the original World Gym were close friends of Joe Gold and used to perform at Muscle Beach and train at Gold's Gym back in 1966-1970.  Rose and Dan Keller.  He was built really good for a guy in his low 50's back then when I knew them.  She was a stunning redhead with huge boobies and a really small waist.  I remembered seeing old pics of them on the wall.  They introduced me to Ron Depolito who I trained with at World's back in 79 to 81 or so.  He drove a pink convertible corvette and was a pimp who got the bodybuilders girls for parties and such.  He was a character.  Allot like Don Ross.

There are actually a few stories about Don on the Stories board.  Plus some pics of Don.  Around pages 3 thru 10 I think.  We did a Gillette commercial together in Puerto Rico where we shaved our heads.  He was a frickin wildman.

I remember the Director asking me to settle Don down because Don insisted we have steak for lunch and refused to work another minute unless we got steak.  Well we finished the shoot very full.  Plus when we went out for lunch we had the guy shave our heads in weird patterns and all fucked up.  SO we really looked like wild crazy guys.

Can anyone name the exact date that Santa Monica Muscle Beach was "closed down"?

And the precise reason why the Santa Monica City Council made that decision to do so?

Would there still be records of that "decision" on file someplace?

Then how about the precise date that the "Pit" was open in Venice Beach? Who got that built, etc.

Thanks

It is in the history thread stunt. I pulled all that info from Harold Zinkin's book and psted it already. Was closed down in December 1959 over a sex scandel with 4 BBer's and 2 underage girls.

They have pics of the Venice Muscle Pit in the book Pumping Iron-that book was copyrighted in 1975-so it was before then. They re-did the Venice Beach pit about 10 years ago though and it is much better than Arnold's day.

Another excellent "Guess Who" Crownshep.  I believe one of the photos is of the great Rock Stonewall.  The Czech bodybuilders are Peter Stach, Robert Datlinger, and (I think) Libor Minarek.

Crownshep, again, thanks for posting the great side triceps photo of
Libor Minarek.  Some time ago on another topic, there was a side tricep of Paul DeMayo posted.  I immediately remembered the Libor photo.  His tricep development and that photo always stood out to me.  In addition, when thinking of tricep development, I think of a photo of Larry Jackson.  I believe it was taken at the 1978 AAU Mr. America and reported in Muscle Training Illustrated.  I cannot remember (getting old) for certain, but
Larry Jackson had some memorable upper body development at that competition.
