A big part of the Vietnam kerfuffle was the fact that it kept going, and going, and going.  No end in sight.

Not a bit like WWII.  In WWII the Roosevelt Administration understood that the “Attention Span” of the USA for war was around 6 years.  Everything was focused on concluding it in that time frame.
With Vietnam, they were nervous that if the United States went full out, that it could escalate into a Nuclear Exchange with the Soviets.
So Vietnam was like a boil that never healed. Along around 1968 the “Vox Populi” started to turn against it.
