US Capitol building being evacuated> NBC News

Earthquake lasted ONE MINUTE.

Come on conspiracy theorists - The rebels storm kadaffi's compound and at the EXACT same time, a violent earthquake hits DC?  Which one of our enemies with a superweapon is sending us a message?  Let's have some fun with it!

cell service down in many areas, possibly due to high volume.

I've been in a few in Northern California. One at night woke us up due to the noise that preceeded the quake sounding like a locomotive was running through the house and then the earth 'jolted' and started to roll for about 20 seconds.

Funny to notice that the dogs started barking shortly before it hit.

It produced sort of a vertigo effect and a feeling of utter helplessness.

It was scary enough to prevent anyone from returning to bed. Most people were outside checking on gas and water pipes and worrying a lot aboutafter-shocks which did occur periodically over the next couple of days .... but they were relatively minor.

I believe that the last NoCal MAJOR QUAKE occured in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1906 and geologists say that the San Andreas fault-line erupts like clockwork every hundred years or so  ..... so the next BIG ONE is late and expected to occur at any moment.

And the later it arrives, the bigger it will be ... so the experts claim.

I felt it here in my office.

Strangely, I was making a few copies and bumped into the machine and noticed it shook violently and thought, "Damn, I got some serious strength if I'm capable of doing that to the Xerox machine by just a tap with my thighs".

Once I got back to my desk, it was all over reuters that an earthquake had hit.

TA, actually most people can't deal with it, but I can kinda deal with it if kids are around.  Last big one we were in was in the L.A. area and we had four young kids in house who were pretty frightened until I jumped up and hopped around and yelled, "RIde 'em, cowboy!"

Believe me .... I was scarred shitless but I had to hide my fear on behalf of the kids. After that shock they ran around yelling, "Ride em, cowboy!" the rest of the day.

You might be getting some after-shock for a few days and some authorities will be telling you what to do if a bigger quake hits.... but I always recall my dad rounding us up under a table or under a doorway in an attempt to prevent damage by falling objects.

Other than that we were always told to get out of the house and wait for the next one on the street with a warning to avoid areas where and when the street cracks open.

Basic earthquake survival tips that might have changed lately but could save you from cerebral damage or falling into earthquake cracks.

One newspaper ran a photography of a cow who fell halfway into a crack and then it closed up again on him so you only saw half the cow whith his ass, tail and rear legs sticking out of the ground.

Don't let that happen to you or your loved ones.

I really didn`t know what to do.  We have 14-16 foot ceilings and I thought it would be dangerous under them so I ran to the nearest door frame, which is about 10-12 feet tall.  After about 45 seconds Jezebelle and I just ran outside as we didn`t know what to do and did not know how long it would last. I could even see one of the chimneys moving about.  Even outside we could feel it and hear.  Its quite a terror when you realize there is no escape from something like that.  I don`t think I could ever get used to it enough to "Ride it".  I can handle Hurricanes and storms, but not that.

Aftershocks!! No one but dumb people can accurately forecast when they will occur, so I would say that you should be somewhat concerned for the next three days at least..... but as a consolation .... aftershocks are USUALLY much smaller than the primary quake you just experienced.

Another comment about ones feeling before, during, and after a sizeable quake.

Waiting for an aftershock to occur is a pretty bad feeling and on many occasions I've noticed that for some unknown reason, people start getting funny and often laugh for no reason at all. I've heard comments from smarter people than me (there are a couple) that fear of the unknown causes people to laugh when nothing funny is happening.

And during the actual quake ... vertigo, helplessness and sometimes panic are very common. And panic is probably the most dangerous if you are in a crowded place such as a theater, department store, or even while shopping for groceries.

I'd avoid large, crowded areas until the area settles down.

ANd then after the ground stops shaking, you sort of wait in fear of the next shaking period, so expect to be somewhat uncomfortable for the next few days.

You mentioned that your chimney was shaking. If it's a brick chimney , it'll most likely be the first part of the structure that will collapse. Nowadays brick chimneys or structures over a certain height are forbidden.

I'm a bit surprised that this quake ocurred on the east coast though as I thought that they were relatively uncommon back there ... but someone once told me that the largest recorded earthquake within the USA actually did occur back there somewhere.

Here are some photographs of things not to do in earthquake territory

Largest Colorado Quake Since 1967 Shakes Homes

By STEVEN K. PAULSON   08/23/11 12:15 PM ET

DENVER -- The strongest earthquake to strike Colorado in more than 40 years shook awake hundreds of people, toppled groceries off shelves and caused minor damage to homes in the southern part of the state and in northern New Mexico. No injuries were reported as aftershocks continued Tuesday.

"Here we go again, there's another one starting. We got to get out of here," said Garry Ringo, owner of Ringo's Super Trading Post in the small town of Segundo, Colo., as bottles on shelves rattled in the background during an interview with The Associated Press.

Ringo estimated he lost thousands of dollars' worth of liquor and soda.

The magnitude 5.3 quake hit at 11:46 p.m. MDT Monday about nine miles southwest of Trinidad, or 180 miles south of Denver, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's National Earthquake Information Center in Golden. It had an estimated depth of 2.5 miles (4 kilometers) and was felt in a relatively large area of southern Colorado and northern New Mexico.

Las Animas County Sheriff Jim Casias said Colorado authorities were assessing damage and so far had reported a porch collapse and a partially collapsed roof. No injuries had been reported, he said.

"As I had one lady tell me, `Sheriff, maybe the world's coming to an end.' All I mentioned to her is that someday it will," Casias said.

Dozens of residents in Trinidad, a town of 9,000 people, and in northern New Mexico called the USGS to report the shaking. Others called from Colorado Springs, Colo., about 130 miles north of the epicenter, said geophysicist Shengzao Chen.

Minor aftershocks continued Tuesday in the relatively sparsely populated area that the USGS says is not known for major quakes or active faults. Theresa James, manager of Ringo's Super Trading Post, said a small swarm lasting three days hit the area last summer. Segundo is a former coal mining town of about 100 people.

USGS geophysicist Jessica Sigala said Monday's earthquake damaged chimneys, cracked walls and knocked items off shelves.

Minor rockslides were reported on Colorado Highway 12 and Interstate 25, but both highways remained open, a Las Animas County Sheriff's Office dispatcher said Tuesday.

The dispatcher, who would only give her first name as Kristina, said she was working when the earthquake hit near midnight.

"Everything was shaking, but we had no power loss," she said.

"I thought maybe a car had hit my house," said 70-year-old Trinidad resident Nadine Baca. "Then I called my son and he said it was the third (quake) today."

Cathy Gutierrez of Raton, N.M., about 20 miles south of Trinidad, told The Associated Press Tuesday that she felt two earthquakes, one around 5:30 p.m. Monday and the big earthquake just before midnight.

"My bed shook with all my pictures. It just went back and forth. I thought someone hit my house. I ran outside. We've had some before (earthquakes), but never this strong," Gutierrez said. "It was a very scary feeling."

Ron Thompson, mine manager with New Elk Mine about 30 miles west of Trinidad, said coal miners 300 to 800 feet underground didn't feel anything but crews above ground and at the company office in Trinidad, where he was at the time, did.

"Not real exciting, but it got your attention," he said of the shallow quake.

The quake was the largest in Colorado since a magnitude-5.3 temblor was recorded in Denver's northern suburbs in 1967, said Paul Earle of the USGS.

Sigala said the area occasionally has swarms of earthquakes, some lasting days or weeks, but Monday's temblor was unusual.

"A 5.3 is big for Colorado," she said.

About a dozen smaller temblors were recorded in the area in August and September 2001, Sigala said.

She said some people blamed that swarm on oil drilling in the area but that later studies proved those fears unfounded.

Colorado is no stranger to earthquakes, but most are small and go unnoticed.

According to the USGS, an earthquake in 1882 was the first to cause damage in Denver and is believed to be the largest recorded in the state.

That quake was believed to be centered in the Front Range near what is now Rocky Mountain National Park. Its magnitude was estimated to be about 6.6 on the Richter scale. It was felt as far away as Salina, Kansas, and Salt Lake City.

well theres a shitload of videos on how the earths magnetic feild is decreasing more rapidly than years past. they can tell this from geological samples deep into the earth studying the magnetic pullor magnetic signal on the rock. WHen a pole shift happens the magnetic pull on the new layer of rock is different from the old this is over many years. Search Nova and earth magnetic feild on youtube

why is this important well the earths magnetic feild acts like a forcefeild blocking harmful sunflairs and there radiation. however since it has weakend dramatically we are open to more strong solar flares wich can lead to earth quakes and polar shifts

i dont know much about elenin but we are approaching the OORT Cloud wich is millions trillions of meteorites. but we have been approaching this trillions of meteors for quite sometime

scientists are not sure why the earth is losing its magnetic feild but i have a theory, its OUR fault , we are not that bright we waste we kill, leave the killing to animals please. I feel things like this throw the harmonics out of wack losing the magnetic protection

Obama Golfing in Martha's Vineyard When Earthquake Hit
August 23, 2011 2:42 PM

ABC News' Stephanie Smith and David Kerley report:

Talk about early warning. The majority of he White House press corps, camped out at a hotel at Martha’s Vineyard, was keeping a close eye on our computers and emails. We started seeing emails from our colleagues in DC that they were feeling a quake.

Seconds…I mean seconds later….the meeting room we are in starts to roll and sway– comparable to being on a boat. No shaking. But it’s an earthquake. And it lasted for a good 15 seconds or more.

The President was playing golf at the time. Two reporters at the golf course felt the quake, another didn’t. A White House staffer who was there too, just told me he didn’t feel it either.

Immediate calls into the travel pool – reporters assigned to cover the president on a day-to-day basis – where Obama was playing golf, could not determine if the President was aware of the quake.

The president was seen taking a phone call, but it’s not clear if it was connected to the earthquake.

Waiting to hear what the President felt…and for the aftershocks.

CHAOS is apparently a rare and very brave individual or else he has never experienced a  good size quake.

As an aside, I have one very good friend who has NEVER experienced fear.... Never!

He's the type of guy who goes diving in Hawaii at 2 AM in the morning miles off-shore for turtles which I believe is illegal.

I think his lack of experiencing fear is due to pure stupidity as he is constantly doing stupid, life destructive things.

He was held up at gun-point in the L.A. area one night and laughed because he only had $10 in his wallet and told the guy that he should have robbed him last nite when his wallet was full. He did surrender the $10 but he told the guy that if he saw him ever again he better have an ambulance standing by.

But I never did see how he would react during a good size quake. Actually I think that even he would come close to shitting in his pants.

CHAOS is apparently a rare and very brave individual or else he has never experienced the ground shaking beneath his feet..

Last related comment:

I know people who were in their top floor apartment in Waikiki when a relatively small quake hit  and they described it like getting shot across the living room with a sling shot as the building slightly tilted in one direction and then shook back. They said it was hundreds of time worse than experiencing the earth shake while standing on the ground.

And those who were riding the elevator towards the top of that 27 story tower said it was even worst.

i wouldnt worry , is your house on a brick foundation? But i assume you are more worried for the cosmetic defect rather than saftey

as for safety dont worry much, drywall plaster falling down will just be a love tap but alot of dust and crap. the structure itself wont collapse from and earthquake especially if your house is mostly wood and not some block castle wich could crumble

There are two Large Furnaces in the crawl space and you can stand up in the space so you don`t have to crawl. The other Furnace is on the Third Floor in the attic.  We have 3 Furnaces, one for each floor.  Under the house I can see the old bricks, boards etc and its completely dry and cool down there, like a root cellar would have been.  There are also vents under the house in the Crawl Space that are connected to the Air Conditioners (3 separate units for each floor and feed into each Furnace) that blow Cold Air in the Crawl Space.  My guess is Under the House is Air Conditioned in order to preserve the Floor Joists and Flooring all of which are original.

I`ll see if I can get a picture for you if you really are interested in seeing under there.  It is really cool actually and I really haven`t explored it too much.  There might be something buried in there.

Thanks for the update, Chaos.

You might not have been around when that big one hit LA and caused a lot of damage to the VA hospital over in the valley.

I was with a bunch of stunt guys working the horses and we felt it and soon learned that the hospital has suffered some pretty extensive damage.

So without a thought a bunch of the guys hopped in their Jeeps and headed on over to help in any way  that they could. My friend Jack helped many patients get resettled that afternoon.

Do you recall the year and the epicenter of that one?

Unlike you and Coach I am scared shitless of quakes and while I was in a good size quake in Newport Beach we learned that the epicenter was a short distance east of the LA Airport (LAX) and aftershocks  in that area were surely expected.

So I thought that maybe I could overcome my fear of quakes by being in the center of one if an aftershock should occur as expected.

So I drove up there and got a room in a cheap motel a few miles east of LAX.

Stayed two nights but nothing happened, so my earthquake fears still exist and I'm still doing my best to jump up and down when one does occur .... which does seem to help a bit.

Stayed two nights but nothing happened, so my earthquake fears still exist and I'm still doing my best to jump up and down when one does occur .... which does seem to help a bit.
That one today was more than enough for me.  I don`t think I could deal with it if it occurred frequently.  I`ve been through Tornadoes and Hurricanes, but that is just on a whole different level.  You can`t go anywhere and literally are paralyzed.

I'm no construction expert  but I do recall cracks in the walls around fireplaces as the predominant form of interior house damage after minor quakes within the San Fran Bay Area.

During major damage, the chimneys themselves are destroyed.

Chimneys don't bend I guess.

California freeway overpasses are now constructed on some form of "rollers" that are supposed to prevent major destruction. Now they just roll with the punches. Or are supposed to.

is there insulation up under the house? i know many dont even have insulation under the house yet the wood is remarkebly preserved
I`ll take a look and take note next time I go down there.  There is Blown in Insulation throughout and It may be down there also overhead.  It is climate controlled down there with the vents so I know that helps with Preservation.  The old boards I do see in the attic are incredibly massive and thick, blackened with age, petrified like.  The  Front Porch still has all of the original flooring and wood work and that part is not climate controlled.  It is built on a raise, as Antebellum houses were with steps you walk up.  There is good air circulation underneath the Front Porch and it stays completely dry under there.  The house is also surrounded by Willow Oaks which provide protection from UV rays and water.

Tough it out!  Earthquakes are par for the course around here.  Having lived in earthquake and hurricane territory, I know it pays to be ready with emergency kits and other supplies!  8)

Here is the problem Bay, this area is far more "important" (historically and politically). Many of the buildings and homes in Annapolis are from the 1600's.  There are questions if the structural integrity of National Monument and the other monuments have been compromised. Gov't agencies have been evacuated in DC...in terms of earthquakes, this area is far more stable than Cali. Although, there are faultlines around here, and they are small, but a big earthquake can be had from smaller faultlines.

JF, thanks for the minority house update.

Regarding that other photo of the house with a 'bridge" leading to the front door ...... My brother had a similar home on a hillside in an unreal redwood tree forest. His house looked similar but the side of the house opposite the front/bridge entrance was all glass looking downhill through the redwood trees.

It was possibly one of the finest locations/settings for a house of this type in the Marin County area.

One hell of a spectacular house over by Muir Woods in Marin County. All his friends (firemen) held their weddings there.

Never any earthquake damage but when the trees shook, it was one hell of a sight to see.

The Washington Monument took nearly 40 years to build.  The Presidents in the past used to view it in its incomplete state as a constant reminder and metaphor that America, with a strong foundation, still was a work in progress.  I think its still the tallest stone structure in the world.

I feel extremely bad for the historical buildings and homes near the epicenter of the quake in Mineral, Virginia.  While I don`t think any have collapsed, some have suffered some pretty extensive damage as far as plaster and masonry work are concerned.  I really hate to see this.

I used to run to the top of the Monument for daily exercise. Can people still do that?

I know people can DO IT .... but is it still open to the public?

Any GetBiggers ever run to the top of anything?

I think that they closed the route up to the flame of the Statue of Liberty? We used to run up there also.

I wanted to run up to the top of the GOlden Gate Bridge once but was never allowed to do so. Instead we got an invite to use the elevator.

We were always running from something or someone.

Never got caught though.

Hhahaa jumping up and down!!! it's all about relaxing.......there isn't a damn thing you can do, so you might as well chill out and enjoy the ride. 8)

most porch oil based paints have a polyeurathane gloss additive to it. no porch paint holds up perfectly unless you got the money use a marine grade top coat gloss ontop the kind of heavy gloss you see on tables at restarants but that shit is too expensive, its good for glazing countertops and tables

I was asking around about Marine Paint at Lowes as it occurred to me that it would be the best thing to use but they were not helpful at all.  I thought about using either the Porch or Floor Paint, or going with Exterior High Gloss.  The paint on the porch is in good shape, its just kind of dull and I think its a Satin Finish in Battleship Grey.  I want more of a Gloss to it.  Do you think Exterior Gloss will be as Glossy as Porch and Floor Paint?

yeah satin is not glossy . they dont have the marine glaze. its a kit you have to order over the internet. but yes a gloss paint should work it usually has polyeurathane mixed in for the gloss effect. polyeurathane is 1/50th the strength of marine grade but it still does the job as long as you dont have black people trampling all over your porch

Hurricanes you know they are coming, you can prepare for them and you can hide in the Storm Cellar/Basement.

Earthquake, nowhere to run, nowhere to hide, you don`t know when its coming.  You are a better man than I if you don`t fear an Earthquake.  This was enough for me.  I never want to feel that sense of helplessness ever again. Its not pleasant.

A remote scenario ..... Here in LV the housing situation is extremely bad. Ten homes on my first class street are vacant and in disclosure and no one even bothers to place 'For Sale' signs on the property ..... anh homes that do sell can be purcased for far more than half their original value.

But my thick scull/sick mind 'sees' a rise in LV home values once the entire state of California suffers the dier consequences after the Big One hits the west coast.

Everyone will be moving 'east' and the closest 'east' is this town called Las Vegas - and the value of these vacant homes will sky-rocket into the stratosphere.

The "only proplem' we'll have then is the fact that we'll haqve to drink and bathe in something wet - other than water, cause we ain't gonna have any.

For your information Lake Meade has dropped more than 100 feet in the past ten years and we'll be importing it sooner than later.

Please bring your own water when you come to the Olympia this year!

QUESTION from above - Is the price of your water service pretty high?

ANSWER - I have no idea but I'll look it up.

I never pay bills cause I set it up many years ago so that all my bills go to my bank and they take care of it on my behalf, but that's an interesting question because of the history of water here in the desert.

I do know that it's damn cheap though.

The crust is diff on the Eastern US than the Western US. So a earthquake of the same manitude would be felt over a larger area East of the Rockies, than West of the Rockies.

yeah satin is not glossy . they dont have the marine glaze. its a kit you have to order over the internet. but yes a gloss paint should work it usually has polyeurathane mixed in for the gloss effect. polyeurathane is 1/50th the strength of marine grade but it still does the job as long as you dont have black people trampling all over your porch

HAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I was on the 9th floor of a downtown Cincinnati office building when it hit. There was 7 of us in the conference room and we all started looking at each other and I said "Earthquake". Many evacuated the building. I was surprised at how far away it was considering how strong we felt it.

Actually it would take one hell of a big quake to knock that chair over, but only a small wind gust.

I think that there is a math formula to figure it out.

You may not be aware of this but there are smart people out there who do develop
equations  to 'explain' the force it would take to knock over a patio chair such as seen in one of the above photos.

I have one friend in particular who is a fooking QM genius but whenever I ask him to solve a problem that takes considerable concentration, I get an immediate reply like the following:

Last night upon a stair
I met a man that wasn't there
He wasn't there again today
I wish that man would stay away

I think it's his way of saving, "Go to hell, you dumb-shit!"

But I do believe that there is an equation for any natural ocurrance .... some of which have yet to be discovered or have simply been overlooked by guys like Bomz, GH, or JF and a few other GetBiggers who seem to often stumble over great ideas or thoughts without actually realizing it.

A lot of you GetBiggers are fooking GENUISES, but you're just too damn dumb to realize it!

I actually live in Indianapolis but my corporate office is right downtown Cincy. So I only go there when I have to. I am a corp manager for them but I can't do the whole cubicle thing and didn't want to leave Indy so they allow me to work remote but I have to go there a couple times a month. I had to stay the night Mon and Tues and stayed at the Garfield Hotel. They had a very weak workout room. Where is the Power Station located from there?

You would take an earthquake over a hurricane? You're an idiot. Earthquakes are no joke. And most of the buildings along the East coastline were not constructed to withstand even the smallest quakes. 6.0 is pretty serious for the Maryland/DC area.

A a little Summer Breeze is headed our way.  ;)  I remember going outside in Hugo as a little kid and swimming in the street and jumping in the air and the wind would blow you back and it was impossible to stand upright.

Earthquake never again.  Jezebelle has been checking the USGS site every day.  There was a major earthquake in Charleston in 1886 and I looked at some of the pictures and I hope it never comes, but there is no warning.

TRUE ADONIS .... I gotta admit something here!

..... I never had too much respect for you ..... until recently.

I guess that lack of respect was due to your occasional attitude towards a number of GetBiggers who seem to lack the education to debate with you.

But I think the chief reason for disliking you in the past was due to your verbose attitude that whatever you said was the definitive truth.

But .... my attitude was changed recently when you admitted your fear of earthquakes.

It takes something that I ain't got to admit that one is afraid of anything ... Man or beast or Mother Nature.

And I honestly wish that I was capable of telling one and all that I fear something that is deep inside my inner-self, but I don't have the guts to follow through.

Many years ago while I was in Nam I did shit that was considered insane by my superiors and my response was to merely laugh and I was transferred to a unit in which there were insaner  individuals than my myself.

They also laughed a lot.

I was definitely no hero in the least.... I was merely a bit insane and could not admit it.

My 'INSANITY was my defense against  showing fear ... dumb shit that I was back then.

So your admittance of your great fear of another earthquake is something I could never do, but which I have a great RESPECT for.

I don't want to get a room, I don't want to be good friends , but it's important for me for some unknown reason  to tell ya this shit.

I do respect those who admit their 'inadequicies' and at the same time I sort of disrespect those who claim 'no fear' ......  unless I've been with them in hazardous conditions and they got out with less than shit stained shorts.

End of story! End of  discourse! Thanks for reading.

I appreciate the kind words my friend.  I know I get carried away at times and I know it isn`t right to do all the time (perhaps its never right).  All of us forget that while these may simply be words on a screen, there is an individual attached to them.  One with emotions, who think, who lives, breathes and dies.

As far as fear goes, there is not much I do fear so it is a wake up call when I get pulled back into the realm of mortality.  My lack of fear comes directly from nearly my entire family being gone and dead.

Thanks, CHAOS! Thanks, TA ..... and while I'm trying to be so damn honest here, let me say the following ....

Only me was a very good friend of mine and there were many occasions when I would do my best to discourage him from rediculing certain individuals on this board.

His response would merely be, "They deserve it!"

But I did know Keith well and have to admit that he any hate for others within him,

But he did have an abundant amount of redicule for others who failed to pay their dues for what they claimed to be or claimed to accomplish.

I have often defended Keith (Only Me) among those who NEVER knew him, but there was no need to defend him among those who knew him well.

End.

Strangest thing I have ever felt.

You get used to it pretty fast though...

The first earthquake i ever felt here in Japan, i felt a little panic coming up but it was over fast.

The 3/11 earthquake was brutal, after that i only have to yawn about everything that is 5-lower and under.
3/11 was a 5-upper or 6-lower here in Tokyo, pretty heavy but still nothing compared to the northern part of Japan.

For explanation: Japan scales earthquakes differently, M9 is Japanese shindo 7.

Yes sure, all new buildings are earthquake-safe by the newest standard available, funny thing is that the real old buildings made from wood stand for 100s of years and survive any eartthquake, people knew what they were doing back then.

Modern buildings are sometimes build on "floating platforms", means that in case of an earthquake the whole house will be elevated by air pressure and "hover" over the ground.

I think that the California freeway over-structures are now fitted with some kind of roller device in an attempt to prevent major damage. And there are most likely similar measures for high rise structures, but I hope I'm not in the neighborhood to see how well they worked after the BIG ONE hits.

A good number of very expensive high rise apartments recently built adjacent to SF Bay will be offered dirt-cheap if and when San Andreas wakes up ..... and she's been overdue for a long time and could 'get up' any minute now.
