I think he wanted to try and get back into it to play the big tournaments he is sucking it up lately I would expect him to take some time off.

I wouldn't put any of those guys in the all-time greats list.....Els and Harrington are two of my faves, but they have a ways to.....I really like AK too. He has the makeup to be an incredible player...talent plus fearless.

It was funny 5 yrs ago when all the "expert" golf analysts, most of which didn't even follow the sport until Tiger was on the scene, had already annointed him the greatest of all time and he was gonna smash Jack's majors record.......well, well, well how things do change..... ;D

good point, i'm not a golf fan but am tired of having tiger woods shoved on me every time i check other real sports scores or read a newspaper. everyday for the last week tigers pic was in my local paper. he lost the last tourney he was in whose pic was in paper tiger woods win or lose he's always in the forefront.

Spot on and one of the biggest reasons I get annoyed in regards to him. The media fell in love with him and just won't let it go. Even with all the crap they are DYING for him to win again so they can write that "feel good" story of him overcoming adversity......

So true. Golf dug themselves into this whole by acting like Woods won every tourney, greatest ever, etc... instead of just using him to promote the sport, it's almost like they used golf to promote him. Sad part is there are some GREAT young players right now with a ton of charisma and ability.

I know Nicklaus played against some all time greats, but I think the Field today has so many better golfers than in the past, that any one of them can compete on a given week, making it more difficult to win.

I'm betting he misses the Open Championship as well. He might be done for the year and possibly a career. I don't want to see that, I would much rather he continue to play mediocre golf and not be a factor again.
And to call him the greatest is a joke. He had a great run, for sure, but the title still belongs to Mr. Nicklaus. Sure, the fields are deeper now, but not as many great players. A truly great player will always find a way to win.
Mr. Nicklaus beats him in the game of life as well.

i can't believe i'm responding to this thread again but such is my disgust for this man or is it the media that hypes him. as i understand he missed the cuy in his latest tourneyment, yet in my sunday paper there is a big picture of tiger covering his face in disgrace with little mention of the actual touneyment. typical. maybe it's just his name would anyone care if his name was jimmy or barack or even auchtnod?

You are soooo right. An incredible finish to the tourney and the ONLY thing i hear on sports talk radio is Tiger, Tiger, Tiger..... of course its from the same crowd who know shit-all about golf, but are "experts" on the subject because all they can do is lap tiggers nuts.

Very true. the PGA whines about ratings being down when Tigger doesn't play, etc... but the fact is they helped create the problem by ONLY promoting him. They tried the same with Norman, but he was a choke artist. And now we get all these golf "experts" weighing in on ESPN, etc... who know ZERO about the game before Tiger came along except maybe that Jack has the all time majors record.
On a side note.....haven't heard Tiger talk about his "A-game" much lately. I think his wife took it in the divorce settlement. ;D

But the huge complaint about those who won majors during Tigers adsense/slump say it doesn't mean as much without him in the field. Can't have it both ways. And even IF he gets anywhere near back to form, Jack's record is safe. Tiger averaged one major win per year during his dominate period....and there is no way on earth at his age/the competition that he will win one per year for the next 4 or 5 yrs, imo.

Being a HUGE UNC fan, I loved him in college, but absolutely couldn't stand much of his pro career because of the way the media drooled over him with little to no criticism even when it was warranted. Same with Tiger up until the whole circus w/his wife. Obviously the guy is one of the greatest of all time, but they just started handing him the title "best ever" without breaking Jack's Majors record or even looking at the top 5 or 10 finishes for both of them in their careers.
I like Tebow, but the media was way overblown in their coverage. I can certainly see why someone would get frustrated with it, plus it was probably even worse on the west coast than here. At least locally, the Cam Newton story got a lot of coverage to help off set it. I was SO wrong about Newton.....jeesh.

So true. I am actually glad to see him win so that all the media/tiger nuthuggers will get all worked up about him and then watch him implode at the British Open. Can you believe he said after winning on Sunday that "some in the media had predicted I'd never win again...." WTF is he talking about? They might have said he wouldn't win a Major, but I've never heard any media people say he was never going to win anything again.

even you guys must admit that he looks like he is starting to get his game back somewhat. His putting is getting better it seems like he is starting to put together more well rounded rounds.

He will NEVER dominate like he did. You do realize that even during the height of his dominance he avg winning one major per year, right? If he wins 2 more in his career, it will be impressive as he is getting older and younger guys are getting better and not afraid of him.
Winning 3 "meaningless" tourneys isn't much of a signal of anything when it comes to all-time greats. The ONLY measuring stick in golf are Majors......period. #1 in the world means nothing, cash winnings mean nothing, etc... and that is the only reason Tiger is still around.....he wants Jack's record....... but it looks like he might just come up a bit short. 8)

I don't think so. I've said on here a ton of times, Tiger at his PEAK was averaging one major win a year, thats when he was dominating. So I don't think his body will hold-up for 5 or 6 more years AND he would have to get back on that same pace. Younger players are much, much better than during his dominance, his health has declined, mentally he's a ghost in majors lately, etc... He has much more to overcome than people think.
People also overlook his dads influence. He has won exactly one major since his dad died. The miracle against Rocco. I think that is as much a part of his mental weakness now as his old lady whoopin' him with a 9 iron. ;D
As I have also said, I'm just enjoying the back-pedaling all of Tiggers nut-huggers and the media, especially ESPN, have been doing. Now suddenly they are all back on his nutsack again.....great he's won 3 times this year, 2 of which he basically set-up the course.....the roar ain't back.....

I'm not sure where you got your numbers. Much was made about tigger passing Nicklaus with his last victory. I think that would give Nicklaus 72 if my math is correct, assuming tigger has 73.
Nicklaus won two majors, 16 and 17 at 40. We all know that number 18 was quite a surprise, on a golf course that he owned, and that tigger will not even be playing then. So basically he has four years to win five, if he can last that long.

Nicklaus missed the cut a number of times. Cannot figure how many based on what I've looked at, but it's apparently quite a few.
In looking at what Woods has done in 16 years, he's on pace to surprass pretty much every significant record Nicklaus has. He's already won more tournaments in 16 years than Nicklaus won in 25 years. Hard to argue with what he has done so far.

Actually, that is the point. Even in a year where he is playing very well, he still hasn't won a major. It just shows how difficult chasing Jack's record is. Soooooooooooo many people were just giving it to him less than five years ago, but I'm just saying that it is FAR from a given.....just like I did back then.... as time ticks by, my argument gains momentum. 8)

Perhaps. I'm not sure his body is much worse off than most golfers, because most of them don't really train. &guy does. Or least he used to train. The injuries really hurt him, but it's not like he's carrying the rock on the football field.
I think if he was failing to make the cut on a regular basis or not finishing in contention in most of tournaments, this notion that he's about done might carry more weight.

Tiger Woods took over No. 1 in the world with his eighth career victory at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. His 77th PGA Tour win makes him within shouting distance of breaking Sam Snead's all-time tour record of 82 within the year, writes Farrell Evans. Story
Woods tied a PGA Tour record Monday by winning the Arnold Palmer Invitational for the eighth time, and this one had some extra significance. It returned him to the top of the world ranking for the first time since the final week of October 2010, the longest dry spell of his career.
Woods never let anyone closer than two shots in the final round at Bay Hill that was delayed one day by storms. With a conservative bogey he could afford on the last hole, he closed with a 2-under 70 for a two-shot win over Justin Rose.
Next up is the Masters, where Woods will try to end his five-year drought in the majors.
Woods fell as low as No. 58 in the world as he coped with a crisis in his personal life and injuries to his left leg. One week after he announced he was dating Olympic ski champion Lindsey Vonn, Woods celebrated his third win of the season, and his sixth going back to Bay Hill a year ago.
"It's a byproduct of hard work, patience and getting back to winning golf tournaments," Woods said.
Vonn tweeted moments after his win, "Number 1 !!!!!!!!!!!!!"
Like so many other wins, this one was never really close.
Rickie Fowler pulled to within two shots with a 25-foot birdie putt on the 14th hole, but after he and Woods made bogey on the 15th, Fowler went at the flag on the par-5 16th and came up a few yards short and into the water. Fowler put another ball into the water and made triple bogey.
Woods played it safe on the 18th, and nearly holed a 75-foot par putt that even drew a big smile from the tournament host. He walked off the green waving his putter over his head to acknowledge the fans who had seen this act before.

"I don't really see anybody touching it for a long time," Palmer said as Woods was making his way up the 18th fairway. "I had the opportunity to win a tournament five times, and I knew how difficult that was."
Rose, who played the first two rounds with Woods, closed with a 70 to finish alone in second.
Fowler had to settle for a 73 and a tie for third with Mark Wilson (71), Keegan Bradley (71) and Gonzalo Fernandez-Castano (72).
Already with three wins this year, Woods is closing in on another Snead record -- 82 career wins. Woods won for the 77th time on tour.
Rory McIlroy had been No. 1 since he won the PGA Championship last August. He is playing this week at the Houston Open.

I ANY other player on the course does that, he is DQ'd for signing an incorrect score card. Of course the no-nothings at ESPN and those with zero history of the game will babble about it being a "bad" or "unjust" rule.....seems to me that if it was good enough for everybody else in the game than it should be good enough for Tiger.

I couldn't have put it better myself. Especially the part about what would have happened had it been anyone else.
He could have gained some respect back from many people had he wd'd. I'm sure many of his people recommended he do just that. That shows his level of respect for the game and others. My thoughts are why would I gain respect for someone for doing the right thing.

I agree the level of competition should be a factor, although I don't think that diminishes what he has done. Even if you just use the eyeball test, the man has been pretty darn good.

I'm not sure about that. I think there's a much greater field of talent now than there was in the past. And I'm basing that on the fact of us being in a period of ultra specialization, where you're going to have 100s if not thousands, who have been playing golf and nothing but golf, prepping for the Tour since they were 10.

I just think the field is much bigger, and these guys have more of a chance to lose "on any given Sunday" now than they did in the past. It's why the same three guys aren't winning everything.

Sure, there are more good players, and I mean that in context. They are all great, or they wouldn't be there. But there are nowhere near the amount of truly great players these days, much unlike what Jack had to face.

Tiger's truly dominant era was before this recent crop of improved talent. His biggest rival, Phil, has never even been ranked #1 in the world. Since the talent has really improved in the last 5 years, Tiger hasn't won a major. In fact his last was against Rocco who isnt a blip on the radar in golf. To compare these young guys to Arnie, Player, Trevino, etc... is very, very premature.

PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. -- Tiger Woods was voted PGA Tour player of the year for the 11th time on the strength of his five big wins and return to No. 1 in the world.
It was the third time Woods won the Jack Nicklaus Award despite not winning a major. He made up for that with two World Golf Championships and The Players Championship among his five wins. No one else won more than twice this year, and Woods won the Vardon Trophy for lowest scoring average and the PGA Tour money title.
"It's been an incredible year to have won five times, two of those World Golf Championships and one Players," Woods said on a conference call Friday. "It's been just a fantastic year all around. It's also an incredible feeling to be voted by your peers, and to have that type of respect is something that's very humbling."
The PGA Tour does not release the percentage of votes won or even who finished second.
Jordan Spieth was voted rookie of the year in a race that likely was no contest. The 20-year-old Texan began the year with no status on any tour. He won the John Deere Classic, lost in a playoff at another event, reached the Tour Championship, was chosen for the Presidents Cup team and wound up 10th on the money list with nearly $4 million.
He will be the youngest American -- and first PGA Tour rookie -- to play in the Presidents Cup next week in Ohio.
"I don't know if it's a `pinch me' moment yet," Spieth said. "I think my mind is still really on next week."
Woods was on the ballot with British Open champion Phil Mickelson, Masters champion Adam Scott, FedEx Cup champion Henrik Stenson and Matt Kuchar. Mickelson also won the Phoenix Open and was runner-up in the U.S. Open for the sixth time. Along with his first major, Scott won The Barclays. If either of them had won the Tour Championship, three wins and a major might have won some votes over five big wins and no majors.
Mickelson, with more wins (42) and majors (five) than any player except for Woods dating to the Tom Watson generation, has never been PGA Tour player of the year, No. 1 in the world ranking or won a PGA Tour money title.
The Jack Nicklaus Award began in 1990. In 24 years, Woods has won it 11 times and only two other players have won it twice -- Fred Couples (1991, 1992) and Nick Price (1993, 1994). It was the fourth time in the last five years that the winner did not capture a major.
Woods nearly made it a clean sweep of all the awards. Steve Stricker narrowly beat him out for the Byron Nelson Award with a 65 on the final day at East Lake in the Tour Championship. That award is for lowest scoring average, though it is not as prestigious as the Vardon Trophy from the PGA of America. The Vardon Trophy dates to 1937 and requires 60 rounds (instead of 50 for the PGA Tour's version of the award) with no incomplete rounds.
It was the first time since 2009, right before his personal life unraveled, that Woods won these awards. Even though he has more of them than anyone in history, he said that it doesn't get old.
"I know how hard it is," Woods said. "I've had to work my way back from injuries on numerous occasions throughout the years. These last couple years is no exception to that. There were a lot of people saying I could never win again, and two years later I've got eight wins on our tour. I'm very proud of where I've come from, from being ranked outside the top 50 to being ranked where I am now, and to have had the success that I've had this year just makes it all the more rewarding."
He said his biggest win this year was at The Players Championship, mainly because it's the one golf course he plays regularly that has given him fits. His other wins this year came on courses where he won for at least the fourth time.
"You start playing golf courses that you like and that suit your game," Woods said. "Guys generally play that schedule and give themselves the best opportunity to win tournaments and to have a nice living out on tour. For me, The Players Championship is the big event and against probably the strongest field we play all year. I haven't had a lot of success since 2001.
"To finally put myself there with the chance and the way I was hitting it to get it done on that Sunday, boy, it sure felt good."
Woods and Spieth won two different awards, though both pointed to the area of improvement -- the majors. Woods has been stuck on 14 majors since 2008, though he had a chance in the final round this year at the British Open. Spieth missed the cut at the U.S. Open and PGA Championship and tied for 44th in the British Open.
"I think next year I'm really going to focus on those," said Spieth, who is No. 21 in the world. "Maybe build a schedule or game plan around how to have success and maybe compete at those four events, and I think that would be a better year for me."

He has had that wealth since turning pro and he doesnt strike me as a very happy/content guy. Maybe with age he will be but certainly not right now.
And many of the wealthy people I have been around are the unhappiest assholes I know. Tiger is going to struggle with the lack of top notch competition. If he isnt at the very top I cant see him being a happy guy. I know he is getting very involved in course design but I dont think that will fill the void.

EA parts ways with Tiger Woods

One of Tiger Woods' longest business relationships has come to an end.
Electronic Arts announced Monday that it would be ending its 15-year relationship with the golfer, the namesake for the "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" video game series.

"We've always been big fans of Tiger and we wish him continued success in all his future endeavors," said Daryl Holt, the company's vice president and general manager, in a statement, calling it a "mutual decision."
EA's "Tiger Woods PGA Tour" franchise has sold $771 million worth of games over the course of its lifetime, according to market tracking company NPD Group.
"We had an incredible run," said Woods' agent Mark Steinberg, who explained the latest contract had expired. "Outside of [John] Madden, you would be hard pressed to find a sports figure that meant as much to a video game company as Tiger meant to EA. But times are changing and EA had to re-evaluate the partnership and frankly so did we."
Steinberg said he's currently in negotiations with another company regarding Woods' video game rights. EA noted it will continue to use the PGA Tour name on the game.
Although EA officials publicly said Woods' extramarital affairs and the fallout didn't hurt his status, the company chose to have him share the cover in recent years with the likes of Rory McIlroy, Rickie Fowler and Arnold Palmer.
The story was earlier reported by the Sports Business Journal.
It has been a rough couple of months for Electronic Arts. Last month, the video game company agreed to stop making its college football game as part of a settlement with ex-players. Despite its recent issues, shares of the company's stock are up 108 percent over the last year through the close of trading Monday.
As a result of the scandal that surrounded Woods' personal life, Accenture, AT&T, Gatorade and Tag Heuer either severed or didn't renew their deals with him.
With EA gone, only two sponsors who were with Woods in 2009 remain: Nike, which first signed him when he turned pro in 1996 and renewed its deal this year, and fractional plane sharing company NetJets. Woods also has deals with Fuse and Rolex.
