Title: I followed wrestling avidly for 5 years ...
Post by: tom joad on August 02, 2017, 11:54:59 PM
from Wrestlemania ('85) to Wrestlemania VI ('90) ... were these the best years to be a fan?

has there been a 5-year period more entertaining than the mid-to-late '80s?

did the "attitude era" top it?

I wasn't a fan of Warrior or the Hulkster (sorry.)

But how can any wrestling era beat the likes of prime:

Rowdy Roddy Piper
Randy Macho Man Savage (with the lovely Elizabeth)
Ricky The Dragon Steamboat
Ravishing Rick Rude
Jake The Snake Roberts (with Damien)
The Hart Foundation
The British Bulldogs
Paul Mr Wonderful Orndorff
The Iron Shiek
The Magnificent Don Muraco (The Rock)
Adorable Adrian Adonis
Handsome Harley Race (The King)
The Million Dollar Man Ted Dibiase
Mr Perfect Curt Henning
and
The Honky Tonk Man
etc.

not to mention, stellar TV coverage provided by:
Jesse The Body Ventura
Bobby The Brain Heenan
Mean Gene Okerlund

also, of course, Ric Flair & The Road Warriors shined in the mid-to-late 80s as well, but they hadn't arrived in the WWF yet (which was all I got on my TV.)

yeah, kayfabe was the pinnacle ... many/most fans (I hope) who were older than a child already knew (or strongly suspected) that wrestling was predetermined, but the whole suspension of disbelief thing probably took an irreversible hit when Vince McMahon himself admitted same in court in 1989.

No the older days when you had the territories so wrestlers could cycle through and fans would have fresh faces and new feuds and angles.

Attitude era and the WCW invasion was pretty interesting as a kid. Couldve been better but it was exciting to see these other guys come in during matches etc. If Goldberg had arrived at that point, it could've been great.

Love that NWO angle to this day. No one expected Hogan ever to go heel. Was best for the business at that time.

P:

If I remember, that spot wasn't even intended for him. Supposedly, he recognized its potential and took it for himself.

I doubt that Luger (or whoever) could have carried it that far.

I think it was originally for Sting.

That's right but Sting was hurt so it went to Hogan.

I probably would've continued watching wrestling into the '90s but I moved away from home and didn't have a television for a couple of years and then never got back into it.  At least I witnessed some of rasslin's glory days and legends on TV and live at Maple Leaf Gardens.  Later, I still was curious enough about the biz to read the great books by Mick Foley and Bret Hart.
