Title: crazy hammer curl wieght
Post by: derrock on September 06, 2006, 03:59:07 PM
Just wondering why I can use 70 lb dumbells for 6 reps on hammer curls curling to your chest with prety good form, not arching  or anything. But barbell curls are hard to get 6 or 7 with 105 lbs for me. why can I use so much more weight?

that sounds about right, 70lb. db's ain't that much on hammers due to the way your wrist and hand is positioned allows for good weight to be handled but when your hands are supinated or palms facing up it makes it much harder, i wouldn't brag on hammers until i got to at least 90's.

so there is rights to brag then? so hammer curls with the 140s are good??

the outer bicep head is bigger then the inner head. I've noticed that to.. I can do  10reps with the 115s and can curl 70s.. thats a huge differance in weight

::) oook buddy. A warm up set is a light weight for a higher reps. I can't imagine you do that with 115lbs dumbell even for shrugs the way you look.

Then you are just naturally weak. Not to worry I can fix that for you. Here is what you do. Start out with heavy barbell curls, followed by heavy dumbell alternate curls, then heavy sitting silmitaneous dumbell curls. Finish it off with preachers and concentration curls. Afterwards you may do some hammers. Do 6 sets of 4-10 reps of each exercise.

Hey, I'm not braging about 70 lbs, I was just wondering why I could do that much more wieght then barbell. I cuould'nt do 140 once with a bar. And 90's ar not far-I've only done hammers like that twice.

@ TS

Why perform hammercurls at all? That's an excercise that you have to perform once every two weeks, or even once a month.
The hammercurl doesn't have that much additional value compared to other curls.

And why you're able to use a hell lot of more weight? Cause you're using other muscles. The bicep is also involved, but it's not the main-target.

No but I used to. The beginers need to go through torturous workouts before than can advance to my state.

Advancing to Alexxx's state would be like going into a state of serious self delusion. I like to refer to Alexxx as Triple X, the future coming of Arnold, Coleman & Sergio all rolled up in one complete package. The Legend, The Man, The Myth....can I hear a amen!!!

If you look at the function of the forearms/wrist, when doing a hammer curl, you can get a good idea why much more weight can be used in that exercise over a regular DB curl. Remembering that one of the functions of the bicep is to twist the forearms/wrist. If you turn the DB and contract the biceps a bit nearing the top position you will have a more effective arm movement. If you keep the thumps up position at the finisher  (top) of the curl it will tend to be less affective for most people.

Another bicep builder that doesn't seem to be done much anymore is the Zotterman curl. Hits the biceps and forearms at a different angle with some respectable results. Good Luck.

after around 9 sets for bi's my pump is gone and I just feel no point in training them further. since i stoped doing that i put inchs on my arms. but thats just me...some need more sets. so in a way i agree with you.

This was true for me as well...it seems the less i train biceps the bigger/stronger they get. lately i've been doing 6 sets after chest and they are making awesome gains. i can get 8 reps per arm with the 90's using a hammer grip at the end of my bicep routine.

2 warmup sets of BB curls - 15 reps

2 sets of standing BB curls, shoulder width grip - 8-12 reps
2 sets of seated alternating DB curls - 8-12 reps
2 sets of heavy hammer curls standing - 6-10 reps - i go all out on these

that's it and i've made better gains like this compared to anything else...it's my modified Max-Ot program.

thats a good workout right there.. I get more of a pump with DB's..  I like the high volume stuff

Thanks...high volume works great for most people. i'm just not one of them. i did the high volume the first 3 years i trained and i made gains. i discovered Max-OT and my gains went through the roof, mainly strength, which is what i want the most.

sometimes i train with new guys and i tell them what i do and they respond "that's it?"...but if they train with me they are about to die by the end of my workouts. intensity is my key, i push people very hard and sometimes make them keep going past what they thought they could do. i've been known to say "one more rep" about 3-4 times during a set...lol

Im like that too except the burn makes me angry...i actually get mad and when that happens ill slam out 4-5 more reps no matter what. its actually kind of funny but if im training and even the slightest thing throws me off i go stupid. yesterday during back i was bent barbell rows and i came down too low and hit something with teh plates that through my balance off and i went nuts....i pulled out 8 more reps with 275 so i did like 17 reps.

Alexxx reminds me of one of those little kids who wants to hang with the bigger high school guy. Will do and say anything outrageous just to get noticed and belong. In his way he can be kind of cool. Probably need a mascot here anyway. Just set out his water and food bowl once a day. My vote is that we not hang him from the neck until dead. Good Luck.

You are right-------no matter what others are saying here, 70 lb. hammer curls (assuming you are not cheat swinging them up) is pretty impressive. I would say you should be doing about 140 lbs or so for 8 to 10 reps in the barbell curl-------based on the hammer weight you are using------but everyone is different.

None the less, good job with the 70's !!!      ;)

Odd.  I can barbell curl 110 for 8 reps, but I can only hammer curl the 50s for 8.  Maybe you got real strong forearms or something.
