at first i was going to do the Ironman, but with the economy....i'm going to wait a bit.

my wife works for merrill lynch who is being bought out by bank of america, and she might not have a job in jan...and my personal training studio is slow.

i can do all the things it takes to train for a show, but the expense of travel and hotel...not the right time right now.

for the first few months i was like a deer in headlights...lol

mike i know what you mean....but they didn't GIVE me anything....i fuckin earned it....lol

and in any past shows...i was beat by someone better than me, so NO i should never have turned pro years ago.....i like exactly how everything played out.

Are there any "special" uncommon exercises that you do?

I think every BB has a sort of movement, that he likes but that you rarely see with others.

here's a typical day:

meal 1:
1 cup instant oatmeal
3 scoops of whey isolate
1 table spoon of macadamia nut oil
all in a blender

meal 2:
1 bag of success white rice
7 ounces of grilled chicken breast
chopped up asparagus
all mixed together

meal 3:
large sliced steak
baked poatoe
broccolli
all from local diner

meal 4:
shake, same as meal 1

meal 5:
5 whole eggs
5 egg whites
1 bag of success white rice
all mixed together

meal 6:
shake again

i'm leaner than most offseasons at 220 lbs

Great to see you staying lean in the offseason. I think thats a big mistake most bb'ers make. Getting too fat in the offseason.

Looking forward to seeing you on a pro stage in the near future ;D

i have no idea what the end result will be when i step on stage in my first show.

however, i will say...what it took for me to turn pro is what im going to do to compete as a pro, i'm not going to ruin my shape.

believe it or not, i was holding on by a thread back then with my energy level to train for shows.
i was burned out real bad, and was listening to too many people...big mistake on my part.

i placed 4th in 97, 3rd in 99 and 2000.

all three i deserved those placings....

Craig and I have always had a good relationship, and im looking forward to geting back on stage against him one day...i think we brought out the best in both of us those couple of years.

when you compete at the top of the national level, you have to respect the guys up there or your just a real dickhead....lol

i hustled to get my name out there, i made phone calls, contacted everyone...and bill liked my look enough to put me on the cover of muscle media.
i did get a lot of coverage for back then...i actually had to write letters to EVERYONE in every magazine...no internet back then.

Bill seemed like a decent guy.

it was the ONLY cover i ever been on.

Hi Vinnie and welcome.

1. Do you realize you represent a standard for body building regardless of how you have been "judged" so far ?

2. Did you find an offseason and precontest that works for you and you strive to bring a complete package each time ? Or do you plan a drastic change ?

3. Besides your frame which is god given as well as shape.....did you make a conscious effort to keep everythingsymetric and in proportion ? training and diet wise ..

i don't understand question #1

i am very fortunate that i dont get real fat in the offseason and can pretty much eat what ever i want...i still eat my bodybuilding food as i outlined earlier, but if i want McDonald's or pizza i'm going to eat it. i am trying to have one of the best offseasons ever.

it took me 16 fuckin years to get here, i'd be fool to not pay attention to what i need to do this offseason to improve....lol

years ago i actually tried to get huge, but that never happened...i could never pack on size like king or dexter....i'm more like a new version of frank zane...lol

i think we all try to get big when we first start out...but i quickly realized what kind of package i had, and never tried to play the size game.

First question refers to the fact that for the past 15 years personally I considered you a standard for body building physique wise ...

You ARE a modern Zane ...and that in itself is the best compliment ...

I'm saying thisa in a totally non gay way  :D

(you realized what your frame can optimally hold and stuck with it ...this is what they all should do IMO )

vinny i ahve a question on your diet
i know u put like olive oil on your food during the diet and the times u would take your food in tupperware how would u deal w/ the oil that leaked off the food and soaked into the bottom of the plastic tupperware? or would u not worry about the oil or would u worry about missing part of your meal?
thanks

actually i hate olive oil...i use macadamia nut oil...and i never use tuperwear, i only use SNAPWEAR, much better than tuperwear.

i take the bottle and a measuring spoon with me, and put the oil on when i'm about to eat.

you can get all cool cooking and kitchen stuff at bed bath and beyond...every bodybuilder should visit one, its a dream store....lol

Vinny care to share what your eating right now in the offseason? And are u staying lean or letting  yourself "go" a little bit?

HEY vin care to share what u went through back some time ago with eating disorder.was that caused from the perception people had from u being vinny the bber all time?that they look over ur shoulder and say are u really suppossed to eat that?and were they bugging u offseason mostly, and how did u get to the point not to let it bother u any more.and learn that u could be a little human and not always as people see in magazines or on stage 24/7.

yeah no problem.

for a long time i did my own thing, i was able to eat what ever i wanted in the offseason.

nobody paid much attention to me even after winning a bunch of local/regional shows, and even the jr usa.

but after my win in the USA, it was like the spot light was on me all the time...when i went to my normal offseason eating, too many people paid way too much attention to what i ate.

all of a sudden i had a rep as someone who did not eat well, someone who cheated all the time.
and all i was doing was what i have always done.

fast forward to 94 , and it carried over. what did you eat today, how much did you eat...it was stressing me out.

it wasn't fun anymore...so i'd binge and throw up for 2 years.

after getting rid of all the "negative" people around me, i took off all of 96...regrouped, and came back in 97 winning my class in the jr nationals, 10th in the usa, and 4th in the nationals.

and thats the story....boring, i know....lol

well if i was asked this question when i was 25....lol

there are a few guys that have beat me that i'd like to stand against again, and there are about 3 pro's that i never competed with that i'd like to go up against.

yeah no problem.

for a long time i did my own thing, i was able to eat what ever i wanted in the offseason.

nobody paid much attention to me even after winning a bunch of local/regional shows, and even the jr usa.

but after my win in the USA, it was like the spot light was on me all the time...when i went to my normal offseason eating, too many people paid way too much attention to what i ate.

all of a sudden i had a rep as someone who did not eat well, someone who cheated all the time.
and all i was doing was what i have always done.

fast forward to 94 , and it carried over. what did you eat today, how much did you eat...it was stressing me out.

it wasn't fun anymore...so i'd binge and throw up for 2 years.

after getting rid of all the "negative" people around me, i took off all of 96...regrouped, and came back in 97 winning my class in the jr nationals, 10th in the usa, and 4th in the nationals.

and thats the story....boring, i know....lol

i do the same i eat all i need and want off seasson and then these silly people that think that u only have to eat chicken and rice are talking shit about u allways!!! they can keep eating chicken and rice off seasson and i will keep on growing eating what i have to eat!!! good luck in your pro carreer.

Why dont u do one of the easier shows vinny like the houston show this summer or the tampa bay show??? I think it would be easier just to step into one of those shows and get ur feet wet, then do a larger show like the new york pro or atlantic city and get blown away. Also enter the 202 and the open classes, that way u can see what u think u fare better in.

Just my 2 cents bro.

i will do the pittsburgh pro may 2nd, and new york pro may 16th, both 202, or the masters a.c september 11th, i'm not sure yet....or all 3

All three are good choices bro, both of those shows are close to home ( low travel cost ) and the 40 and over is a good idea as well.

Good luck to u bro, u have an amazing physique, and I cant wait to see it on a pro stage in the near future.

Well and about the honesty, I think thats a mistake that alot of guys make is they go into a tough show like the ironman or new york pro for their first show they place 16th, there confidence is shot and we never hear from them again.

Atleast if someone did an easier show, they can get a good placing, get some confidence and a sponsorship ;D, then use that next year to get better and hopefully have a better career.

i am on the same page with you...however if i got invited to the ARNOLD, i'd compete, as it would give great exposure.
but for me....the 202 class and masters shows are where i belong.

i used aldactone and dyaide for that show, i timed everything perfect and i was dry and peeled.

i tried again in 94 and 95,and 97 but was never able to time it again like that, and today i never use it....as long as my diet is on point, i'm very dry...not like the USA in 93 but close.

I think in the past u claimed no cardio offseason ,did u follow same route or just hit cardio harder during prep,do u do any cardio now?

my goal was to be as close to the 93 usa condition as posible.
and i thought, if i keep doing what i been doing...i'll have the same results.

so i dug deep, dieted longer with almost an hour and a half cardio daily.

i really dont know what to say here, other than...shit got out of control for a while, and guys ruined their physiques. but i think things are calming down, and guys are being more smart about contest prep.

vinny dead on,just reading articles about u in past u can tell u were raised by 2 good parents ,seems old school ways .italians have a good way to rear kids traditional sense, that i'm sure u kept a little common sense in not wanting to dissapoint them and do what u said not to push the envelope ,listen my dad knew i used a bit but it was a bit in the sense and he was like alright but don't fall into that trap forever .i respected him and learned to be wise and his word was the right word.i still made him shake his head tho lol,,,,,,,

lets be real here.

if i won my pro card back in 93, i would never had the run i have had as a top npc national competitor.

i would of been a pro when dorian was changing the sport, and i would of lasted maybe 3 years tops trying to crack the top 10....then done.

my road has been a long one, and a very enjoyable one:

i been under contract with EAS, and now UNIVERSAL NUTRITION going on my 13th year this january.
i been to mexico, germany, italy, poland, and PR all from bodybuilding, and had a ton of fun.

i enjoy what i do...

Hey Vinnie,
This is Harley and I want to compliment you on your most humble response pasted above.  First, I will say that you did earn your Pro Card and you know that I am one of your harshest critics.  I say that only because I had the privilege of training with you and traveling with you to shows and simply wanted only the best for you.
Also, most guys hold onto the usual misbelief that they weren't beaten by better guys.  It's refreshing to hear a guy be so brutally honest.  I was debating about starting a thread re Craig's upcoming year but have been really disappointed by all the unwarranted hostility and apparent disinterest in true bodybuilding discourse.  Seeing your thread here in the Positive section gives me hope.
As far as your first show, none of us want you to do anything that places unnecessary stress upon you or Sheila (one of the nicest ladies I have ever met).  May I suggest the Atlantic City show?  Craig and I drive down Friday night and leave Sunday morning.  That makes for a relatively inexpensive stay despite the inflated hotel price.  Your family can even drive you home Saturday night as it's only about 2 hours away.  It's an extremely well run show and Stokely and Ron are great promoters.  I also think that with all that time to train and the quality of that show, there is no way you will be overlooked.
In closing, it's great to see you up there on a pro stage where you belong.  Attitude and appreciation for the fans makes for a very long and prosperous career.  It's too bad so many other "pros" didn't learn that from you a long time ago.
Your friend,
Harley

VINNY WHATS A TYPICAL OFFSEASON LIKE NOW EATING SCHEDULE AND HOW MANY CALORIES DO U GET IN,AND SUPPLEMENTED SHAKES ECT....CHEAT MEALS INCLUDED PIZZA ECT...CARDIO NOW OR NO?

typical day:

meal 1:
6 egg whites 1 yolk scrabbled on a plain bagel
snapple iced tea

meal 2:
sliced london broil
white rice

meal 3:
3 scoops of whey isolate

meal 4:
grilled chicken wrap
white rice

meal 5
waxy maze and a scoop of whey isolate after training

meal 6
porter house steak
baked potatoe
salad

i dont count calories or do any cardio in the off season.

i dont over eat, i never stuff my self...i would never do anything to distort my gut.
i dont believe in getting fat and bloated in the off season, i can guest pose at moments notice.

i never do cardio in the off season.

good reply vin on diet day to day ,i seem to follow the same course pretty much, same no cardio ever, eat to get protein and fair amount of carbs to train and rest ,now u no many top bbers and are friendly with some,my question for u is u stay lean enough and bloat free to guest pose and keep looking like a bber, now some of your friends or top bbers decide to overeat and bloat?did this practice not feel or look right for your physique you were striving for?

i think its down right stupid to blow up to 250 if your going to compete as a lightheavy weight at 198. and if a guy is in great shape at 250...why scarifice the muscle to make wt?

i never got caught up in keeping up with anyone...

i really liked watching posing routines of frank zane, bob paris, lee labrada, and even milos.

routines came easy....but the mandatories are practiced just like training, 3 x a week for up to 1 hour starting at 8 weeks out.

EXAMPLE.

i have been doing 3 sets per exercise:

12 reps...warm up
6 reps
to failure

dumbbell bench press:

90lb dumbbells 12 reps

115lbs 6 reps

125lbs depending on the day...6 to 9 reps

been training like this for a few months, and the last 2 weeks we trained for reps to give the joints a break.
but this week we are not training at all...time to rest the body.

thanx for answer bro, read article in flex ,i'm probably last loser to get it in mail lol.....i think its good mag imo, anyway great article, great pics bro,and my training question was answered there i guess,u probably modify it now and then, its almost a carbon copy of what i do,reps, exercises,i found also at 40 higher reps feel great and pump is unreal ,i do at least 1 failed set 6 reps or so on tail end of most power movements, otherwise 10-12 sometimes 15 ,but good heavy weights ,form a must.the leg workot outlined is exactly how i do it ,i love training legs and love higher reps ,on them, they grow better and get better seperation that way, thanks vin for the info always....

when i was training for the masters nationals, i only had training partners on leg day, and i did not push heavy weight in general as i usually had no spot.

but right now...since August, been training full time with a training partner, and i been doing the HIT style. training heavy and very intense.
but at 41, my warmup's are very long. i usually warmup the supporting muscle groups,  and the main area i'm training that day for about 15-20 min before i get into it.

you have to remember, i took off from training and everything that goes with bodybuilding right after the 2001 npc nationals until the 2005 npc nationals...i went cold turkey.

i hated eating and living out of tuperwear, i hated the gym, i hated bodybuilding period.

i ate normal, i drank beer during any football or baseball game, i ate pizza, i ate chips. i just wanted to be a kinda normal guy that had fun...no pressure of keeping in shape.

by the time april of 2003 rolled around, i was way out of shape and couldn't even breat right when i tied my shoes.

my friends were training for the 2003 npc east coast, so i started going to the gym with them. fed up with my fat fucking stomach, i started eating 6 meals a day of just 1 can of tuna and 2 cups a rice each meal, and 1 hour of cardio daily.

3 nights before the contest, they were posing....and i was busting them that i looked better.
after taking my shirt off and seeing how ripped i got in 7 months, they talked me into competing again, and i took 2nd in the lightheavys and then 13th in the npc nationals.

i was happy with the outcome concidering how fat i was in april.

by the time jan 05 came, i was fully back into the bodybuilding life style, and seriously thinking about the nationals once more.....placing 5th that year, the bug bit me again.

it was great taking time off, and enjoying life.....best thing i ever done.

i'm back now....it took me 16 years to have that IFBB pro card in my wallet, i'm loven this right now.

at 41...i'm just starting.

good story on how you need to take a break to 'rediscover' the passion for training and eating right. I can't do it all year round and need some layoff time in the winter, more a mental break than a physical.

i have never taken them either, just wanted your opinion, even if semi bulked but lean if they were needed, but yeah hard dieting, playing with carb's amount up or down and cardio do trick,so u recommend all yr cardio say 2/3 tms per wk 15/20 min low impact like bike say?my old thinking was cardio then more food to compensate due to getting too lean from additional output, but to me regular hard intensity training with less rest gives u good results and some cardio benefit.whats ur take.

Vinny, the craziest change in your physique since the 90's has been that incredible hamstring drop in the side poses.

what did you do to change that area ?

thanks !

believe it or not, i never really did any lunges, stiff legs, hypers, or deadlifts consistantly.

all those exercises are apart of my routine now for the past 4 years.

i hear all this talk that in your 40's it's hard to grow new muscle....busllshit i say.

to be honest, i'm not really concerned about who's going to be there, just focusing on my condition, and making what i have a good package.

my hands will be full enough when i get there, so why think about things that i have no control over, i'm not thinking about "them" as much as they are not thinking about ME.

here's a typical day:

meal 1:
1 cup instant oatmeal
3 scoops of whey isolate
1 table spoon of macadamia nut oil
all in a blender

meal 2:
1 bag of success white rice
7 ounces of grilled chicken breast
chopped up asparagus
all mixed together

meal 3:
large sliced steak
baked poatoe
broccolli
all from local diner

meal 4:
shake, same as meal 1

meal 5:
5 whole eggs
5 egg whites
1 bag of success white rice
all mixed together

meal 6:
shake again

i'm leaner than most offseasons at 220 lbs

Some questions about your offseason diet, Vinny:

your last 6 meals has 1c oats?

1 bag succes white rice = 90g of carbs?

don't have any pwo shake, just whole food?

thanks

dave palumbo guides me with the diet, the zero carb / protein and fat combo work well on me.
i normally do a cheat day on sunday, not a cheat meal......but this past weekend it was just one cheat meal, a nice juicy cheese burger and fries.

all in all, my calories were lower and only did cardio about 3x a week.....i'm coming in bigger and fuller, and gained about 5lbs since the masters win last year.

i found that eating less, and not as much cardio worked better.

looking at the picture from when i posed at the suburban a week out at 209, and the contest pic's and posing in the store still around 201....i just get too flat when trying to make the weight class -

i dont know if i should continue to try the 202 class and hope to keep my fullness, or just say fuck it and compete in the open.

16 years on the national level trained me to be at a fast pace with the free posing, and mandatory posing at the prejudging.
But in the IFBB i now see that everything is slower, very chill. you can take your time and enjoy the stage, i didnt realize it until both shows were over...lol

i was nervous and my adrenaline was at full tilt. i shot my load before i needed it...lol

i dont really think obtaining my pro card set in until i was eating a burger after the show. 16 years is a long time to go after a goal, and 10 months as a pro did not set in right away.

As far as the guys go.....Mark Dugdale is a class act, a very low key guy that minds his own business and is just chill.

Jason Arntz is very cool and very relaxed, he was asking me how i was doing...he knew i was nervous. our wives got along great too.

Ed carrera was way too serious.

i asked Dave Henry about how he trained and he took a lot of time explaining his training methods.

Jose Raymond was cool too, we talked alot and got along real good...i can see us being friends if we lived near each other.

There were a few guys that were quiet and to them selfs and did not want to be bothered....nothing wrong with that.

one guy in particular blew me right off and made it clear to stay away, it was def personal....if he reads this, he knows who he is. i get it...you dont think much of me....LOL

all in all the guys were mad cool....i walked away from it with a great experience.

Vinny,

Would describe the style of training you and John Hnatyschak followed?

Reps, high volume, low volume, rest pause, forced reps........what were the exercises that you two seemed to have the most faith in???

Would you also tell us a little about the diet, cardiovascular exercise...ect

I would appreciate it!! Thanks in advance!!!

Willie

it really was all about basics, nothing fancy.

he trained for over a year of offseason, ate big, trained basic/heavy.

at 14 weeks out he started his prep. i know he did csrdio, but i cant remember details.
the diet was simple. 2 high carb days, 2 moderate carb days, and 2 low carb days, followed by 2 zero carb days...then repeat the cycle.

as the masters o got closer, we would monitor how he looked, did he look better with high carb days, or low. and we came up with a plan that brought him a 3rd place finnish after 14 years of being away from the stage.

he had a lot of loose skin from years of not dieting, but with the right crb load at the end, he was very tight full and ripped.

i wish i could tell you something special that he did besides kill him self in the gym, and NEVER cheated on his diet.

it was a trip to train with him, to see his body go from a fit look to a hard core bodybuilder over about an 18 month period.

thanks, vinny!!

i was just under the impression that john pumped sets out with lighter weight.....but sometimes the magazines do misrepresent the champs workouts.

if you read up on john's training you always hear that he preferred lighter weights but you mention heavy and basic. oh well, he looked excellent for that year's masters competition.....and he should feel good knowing that you were in his corner and gave him extra motivation along the way......i know that john gave you great fire to train and eventually become a pro yourself!!!!

true, we did use weights for a pump....but it was all basic. our "heavy" was light to most other bodybuiders.

sorry if i didnt explian my self correct..

How about wrist straps for back or trap work??? Thanks, bro.......my questions are done now.....sorry for asking so many.....just enjoy the chance to get the straight scoop from a pro like yourself!!!! HAPPY 4TH of July!!!!

decreasing your body fat comes with 4 area's to cover.

1 - build muscle through weight training...muscle burns fat.
2 - eating small meals every three hours to speed up your metabolism.
3-  cardio
4 - rest

if you just focus on cardio...you wont reach your goal.

john is chillin with his wife, they opened a subway shop and run that all day.
i dont think he gets to train as much as he would like, but he is still in pretty good shape.

i have a full time training partner for the last  year, and its working out great.

i said i'd only start hitting them if i ever turned pro. i been training them over a year now, and i do them right after legs.

a few sets on standing raises - 4 sets / 12 reps not heavy at all

leg press raises - 3 sets / 12 reps

i am off season right now, but im staying leaner than in the past. i dont want to get way out of shape.

i let my self go for about 8 weeks after the ny pro, but i been eating very clean for a while now.

i find eating clean is when i grow better, and in the past my offseason found me soft and puffy, not bigger or better. but now that im older i dont want to deal with harder dieting when need be.

right now i'm 220 lbs

meal 1
bowl of oatmeal
egg whites/grilled chicken breast

meal 2
2 cups minute white rice
sliced steak
fruit

meal 3
2 cups of pasta
1 can of water paked tuna
fruit

meal 4
sweet potato
grilled chicken breast
salad

meal 5
2 cups minute rice
1 can of tuna

training days....torrent / glutamin / bcaa's right after training

i think the goal to compete as a professional was accomplished and the the end result was good ,u got in good condtion at the ny pro, trial and error and can be improved upon, the placing is irrelevant u still had guest posing, buissness, contract to good company still in your back pocket.most guys either fade or can't keep the bbing perspective in balance ,u have acted as a professional long before reaching the status,u have been able to do most things bbers of maybe bigger stature, mass, can't do due to the fact there 1 dimensional and trying to make a dent as the biggest guy ,u kept your build other than getting a bit bigger over the yrs ,but still remained true to what bbing meant to u.

No mean to disrespect but "FEEL heavy" doesn't make any sense. Why would your fibers grow if they're capable of 405? Just because it "feels" heavy? Come on, even you know it doesn't hold water.

sorry to answer vinny's question but "bodybuilding" is all about feeling the weights. if your lifting 405 with shitty form and doin half reps what are u goin to get out of it. but if your doing 275 and feeling the appropriate muscles working thru the full range of motion then your going to build muscle. plain and simple.

Wrong. And nobody said shitty form. if you can move 405 in the 6-12 rep range, moving 275 in the same range won't be enough to stimulate growth; you might "feeeeeeel" the weights when you start hitting 20 reps which everyone knows doesn't optimally stimulate hypertrophy, if at all..

Alex,

come on bro, get over the ego, huge weights, training like a strong man mentality.

bro, many bodybuilders have trained the same exact way Vinny does. To name a few, Lee Haney, Lee Labrada, Serge Nubret, Arnold, Hnatyschack, Phil Williams, Lance Dreher.......ect.......N eed I say more.......bodybuilding is a completely different animal than just pure weightlifting or powerlifting. Vince Taylor always mentioned in training articles, that feeling what you are doing......forming that mind to muscle connection is the most important aspect of working out.

Vinny is spot on with his training.....he has stayed injury free and has developed an awesome physique. Squeeze, contract and focus on the mind-muscle connection!!!!!!

not going to ruin vinny's thread, but once again alex you have no clue what your talking about, its laughable that  you think there is only one way for a muscle to grow. If that was the case everyone would be doing the exact same thing in the gym. But thankfully thats not the case.

and vinny's physique is a perfect example of that. obviously what hes doing is working.

Whoaa LOL!!!! No need to get all personal "Glenny"...

but there's a chance that by looking at our physiques, I might instinctively know more than you about what it takes to gain mass; since I've known you, you went from DOGGCRAP to some other pink dumbell or kettel bell shit in a matter of days and to be honest, haven't really grown since I've met you... and I don't have better genetics...

Now back on how to stimulate optimal growth in muscle mass ...

If you can bench press 315 for 8 reps (you can't but let's assume), we know it takes 315 to cause your muscles to fail. When you fail and can not do anymore reps, all the muscle fibers in the chest have been recruited and worked.  Your warm up should of course be much lighter but technically, your first real set for optimal mass is your maximum weight in the 6-12 reps range. Do you really think you would still grow by doing 8 reps with 225 when you could do (hypothetically, we know you can't) 20+ reps? We both know 20 reps is not optimal for hypetrophy. Doesn't mean that "feeeling" the weight isn't good; but "feeling it" beyond 15 reps once again, isn't optimal.

Of course PTOR and fiber type varies from person to person, some still respond good at slightly higher reps, some at lower (usually guys with more 2b satellite cells).

wow i made it big time now, you guys are fighting over me...lol

Alex has a point, but let me clear this up.

Alex thank you for challenging me, i like a good fight...and you have every right to point me out....lol

back in the day, 405 was easy. but today its a ton for me, i cant even get the weight off the rack.

if i had 405 on my back TODAY, all i'd feel would be my knees, tendons, joints, lower back ect...
so by saying i make a lighter weight "feel" heavy....i try and hope that im stimulating the muscle as best as i can....in reality the weight is HEAVY to me today. i just try to train a different way in hopes of breaking those fibers down.

as a matter of fact, my legs have grown in the last few years from "lighter" training than what i did in the past.

i trained with HIT from after my masters win until march. i was getting the 120's and 130's up for 8-10 in any givin set on flat dumbbell bench. since march....i have gone back to easing up the weights, and training lighter.

my chest actually got thicker and bigger since training lighter, slower....

bottom line is.....until you are in your 40's, nobody will know what im talking about....lol

back in the day, 405 was easy. but today its a ton for me, i cant even get the weight off the rack.

if i had 405 on my back TODAY, all i'd feel would be my knees, tendons, joints, lower back ect...
so by saying i make a lighter weight "feel" heavy....i try and hope that im stimulating the muscle as best as i can....in reality the weight is HEAVY to me today. i just try to train a different way in hopes of breaking those fibers down.

as a matter of fact, my legs have grown in the last few years from "lighter" training than what i did in the past.

i trained with HIT from after my masters win until march. i was getting the 120's and 130's up for 8-10 in any givin set on flat dumbbell bench. since march....i have gone back to easing up the weights, and training lighter.

my chest actually got thicker and bigger since training lighter, slower....

bottom line is.....until you are in your 40's, nobody will know what im talking about....lol

LOL I'm getting there so I'll soon find out ;D

I actually forgot the age factor; but the thing is a guy your age who's been training for so many years has built a solid base; so different mode of stimulation will promote density and quality, lots of fiber 2b have been already converted and your mind/muscle connection is obviously 100% there. I agree that quality can be gained from focusing on form instead of throwing the weights around like a degenerate, especially when more in a maintenance mode like you are.

However, guys who don't have the mass in the first place (yet) and focus on pink dumbells type of workout in the 15 reps + range hoping to gain solid mass are kidding themselves; their fibers 2b's haven't been converted nor have their neuro muscular developed sufficiently.

No offense alex, but if i wanted to know how to be 240lbs with 25%+ bodyfat, id seek out your advice. But im pretty happy with the progress that im making at the moment.

Now onto training for hypertrophy.

There are more than one way to skin a cat alex.

I wont go into detail because i dont have the time.

But here are some ways to make some progress in your training, without lifting heavier weights.  ( because your "physique" has been getting progressively worse over the years )

1. Increase training density
2. Increase volume
3. Use more "intensity" methods.
4. Increase time under tension
5. Produce more tension in the targeted muscle group.

Try some of these methods and u might actually make some improvements in the gym. And none of them have to do with lifting heavier weights.  Also improve your form, no one cares what u lift, its what u look like that matters.

Lastly, just to disprove your theory. Look how Tom platz trained, rarely did u see him do low reps for squats. But what he did do was plenty of 20+ reps of squats with alot of weight on his back . So tell me if someone squatted 225 for 20 reps his legs would be a good size. but if someone squatted 225 for 50 reps i bet his legs would be a whole lot bigger, wouldnt they? Or does that not stimulate muscle fibers?

All good advices. Still, big muscles = big weights, can't be denied and I have the mass to prove it.

muscle maturity everyones favorite term always come to mind, but it does exist to an extent and more to others, your build had different look from 10 yrs ago a bit,and like i said previous post does not have that worn out look to it,other factors have probably helped that, not excessive bulking, overtanning, maybe not cycling long or excessive.

i hit them with back, only 135 for 4 sets of 12-15

i have a herniated disc, and i dont want to mess with it.

my weak area has always been my arms, if they were fuller....i'd look better. im lucky that i have a decent peak.

thanks for your response. how important is the peak contraction in your opinion? in other words, do you hold the weight at the top of a movement for a count of 2 or more seconds......or is it only necessary for a brief moment in the contracted postition?

im real big into training with high reps, going slow, and contracting -

i like drop sets, supersets, and holding for 2 seconds.....

i dont get there as much as i'd like, since im in north jersey. but if anyone ever goes...you must hit legs there.

all the meals carlo makes are GREAT, depends on what you like....some are not good for precontest, but ALL of them are perfect for OFFSEASON.

I EAT about 4 of his meals daily, and my favorite is the chicken with rice and lentil's -

Vinny,

willie, i use a partial range of motion on all incline presses. i stop the bar or dumbell about 2-3 inches before i hit my chest, and only go up past half way up, pausing at both top and bottom of the movement.

doing it this way i get a huge pump, and if i do it the conventional way with touching the chest and locking out at the top i dont feel it in my chest, but my shoulders get all the work.

thank you Wild Willie.

after 16 years of aiming for 1 GOAL...IFBB pro status, I basicly shit a brick that i actually did it, and had a hard time adjusting and readjusting to a new GOAL.

WELL, the dust has settled and i'm looking at 2010

i have keept my weight at about 218 this offseason and not at 235 like i did last year where it was too hard to diet to get to look good at 202 in time for the shows, bottom line i got to fat in the offseason.

i realized instead of doing the summer shows or the AC in Sept, it would be best to back off, regroup, and have a good off season.

In your opinion, what direction is the sport of bodybuilding heading in????

Do you ever hear from the judges what exactly they are looking for??? Do they still want size at all costs......or are they willing to move in a more aesthetically pleasing direction??

Many people thought the sport was heading in a more aestthetically pleasing direction, when Dexter Jackson won the Olympia last year. Now that Jay Cutler has regained the title, people aren't making that proclamation anymore. Instead, they're simply musing that Jackson won the title because Cutler was way off the mark.

What do you do to counter that as I am in the same age range and experience the same thing. Supplements, vitamins, etc???/  or did u change how u train?   Used to see u all the time at Strong and shapely back in the 90's. You'd know me to see me.

when we were younger we could just go in the gym and start training with very little warm-up.

today at 42 i take my time warming up, and never rush it.

im staying leaner in the offseason and it seems to help with training.
i train more in the 12-15 rep range and throwing in supersets or drop sets from time to time, at this stage of the game, im not training to get bigger,    but to make what i have better.

Squats, deads, bench, standing military, bb rows.

i never concerned my self with getting stronger, my ego to lift heavy never got in the way, i always wanted to get bigger, and i never fell into the thinking that only heavy weight would do the job.
i always gravitated towards frank zanes style of training, and for those short periods of time when i trained a little heavier, i just got hurt.
my joints could never handle it so i knew from an early age that high rep training worked best for me.

the exercises that you mention, yes i have done them, and still do.

right now i'm eating more food in general, yes more carbs.

my training is going back to doing what works for me, heavy weight, low reps do nothing for me except injury.

moderate to lighter weight and higher reps keep me full, round, and dense. last year i trained too heavy and got too big at 230, and it was a killer to get down to 202 and look good. so right now i'm around 217 and in a better position for when i start my contest prep.

very good,,,at least your smart enough to do it your way and not force something that will only injure u or hurt your overall look, you have enough muscle on your frame by now,it is what it is,conditioning is never a problem for u either, carbs i bet will give a better look for u i think,i'm sure u will play with amounts and adjust it from there.we post on ur thread for a reason cause we want u to well, jersey guys have to stick together,,,

cool vinny, thanx for laying that out.

do u think that eating massive amounts of food like most bodybuilders do is overrated??

personally i feel that bb'ers eat too much food, and there is no possible way to assimilate 7 or 8 meals of massive amounts of food like most guys think they need to eat to grow.

what u think about this vinny?

yes i think some guys eat way too much, but i think we are seeing an END to that way of thinking.
bottom line, why gain 60 to only be 5-10 lbs heavier at next years contest. that makes no sense to me.

better to stay 15 lbs above contest weight. at 12 weeks out....it should be easy for anyone to get ready for a contest.

most guys make BETTER gains while dieting anyway.

its amazing that nothing has changed other than the quantities per serving ,,bbing diet main staple is same from when u started to now, there are no secrets..unless u compete and final dry out process is maybe where the help of someone else's eye to get u on stage at your best..i agree with eating good,i eat the same things every day ,and enjoy pizza and other things when i need/want 2..thanks vin for your replies ,,misconception people have is they think they have to pig out to get bigger, then that will make them stronger,u can make gains lean not contest lean but gym shape lean and still be pretty strong..

How many calories are you taking in at 12 weeks out?(typically speaking)

How high is your protein intake???

What is your beverage of choice during precontest??

Thanks!

i keep it real simple, as i just measure the weight of the food.

6 ounces of chicken, 8 ounces of sweet potato etc...

i never count calories, so i don't know. i never cared enough.

it wasn't the "card" that has helped business, it's that i am a masters over 40 champion.

most of all the clients in my studio's are over 40, and that makes them more comfortable with me and my staff.

oh ok, that went over my head...lol

you might find this funny, but i never understood why guys take shit if they are NEVER going to compete, let it be bodybuilding or powerlifting, i also never understood why guys SHAVE if they are not or never going to compete. if its the offseason, why are you shaving your legs,{unless you are at an expo or photo shoot } and if you are not a competitive bodybuilder, why the hell shave....thats what GIRLS to do.

mostly everyone in this sport does it to get big, and some dont care to get ripped...getting ripped is a full time job, if you have not been on a 16 week contest diet, its a bitch. maybe some have no desire at all to go that route and would rather eat everything in sight....thats cool, i probably would do the same shit if i had no desire to step on stage.

i have met alot of guys over the years that say they wish they could compete, but dont have the mind set for the diet.

WOW.......I'm freaking out over this as your offseason food intake????  This does not seem like very much food at all.  I've read this thread all the way through (2 years worth) and I noticed a few offseason diets you've used. Could you post the "precontest" diet you use? How do you change it from 12 weeks in?  Do you use some type of carb manipulation.....like 3 days no/low carbs 1 day carb load etc?
My first year of competition was 1984 so all the dieting info we gathered back then was from magazines and other bodybuilders we knew. This internet shit is unbelievable for gathering info...lol.

Meal 1
10 egg whites
40 grams carbs from grits

Meal 2
shake with 50 gr protein
40 grams carbs from oats or grits

Meal 3
50 grams protein powder
60 or 90 gr carbs from I think its called Bodygro...Its a carb drink he uses from Nutrex, his sponsor...The protein powder is also a Nutrex product

Meal 4
2 pieces fish
salad

Meal 5
2 pieces fish, sometimes 3
spinach

Meal 6
shake..usually 40 grams protein or 12 egg whites

my off season meal plans change often from year to year, i like trying new stuff out.

i dont need much food, what you think is a little.... goes a long way for me. i actually get bigger from dieting than when it offseason, i have always responded better precontest.

i think ALL diets work....keto, carb rotation, etc....the key is to never go off the diet and have a ton of patience.

yes i was prepping for the europa show on april 17th, and the new york pro on may 8th.

i start renovations on my new personal training studio april 1st, and move in a week before the new york pro. i dont think i can focus on my business and competing, something will give.

as of right now, i'm putting all my energy into my business, however i am training hardcore and eating pretty good.

yes i was prepping for the europa show on april 17th, and the new york pro on may 8th.

i start renovations on my new personal training studio april 1st, and move in a week before the new york pro. i dont think i can focus on my business and competing, something will give.

as of right now, i'm putting all my energy into my business, however i am training hardcore and eating pretty good.

Vinny,

Chiming in late but again very happy you made it to the Pro Ranks!!!

I have a question and by no means am I trying to insult you.....

Being a smaller guy, when you started competing...did you have aspirations of winning the "O" or was it more of "be the best I can".

Believe me when I say I would love to have your physique!!

Thanks!

i just wanted to see if i could do well in a contest. then when i started placing and winning, i gave the jr usa a try because it was held in NJ.
i got my doors waxed, and placed 15th. i never thought of going back to a national show after that...it was all for just getting in great shape.
after winning my class in the nj states, i gave the jr usa another try...i won my class.

i have taken each contest as it comes, and market my self to the best that i can.

we have way too many LAZY bodybuilders today....im not talking about what goes on in the gym, i'm talking about MARKETING.

i have seen so many guys turn pro before and after me from my area, and you never see them in a magazine. its not because the mags dont want them, its because the bodybuilder is not trying hard enough  or not at all to get work.

everyone would like to be Mr O, BUT it is a lot easier to get in a magazine.....lol

getting off the topic a bit, i walk into the expo this past weekend and i run into a guy that we ALL know....{don't ask, i'm not mentioning his name}  and he looked kinda miserable, but i made my way over to say hello anyway.....his response was negative about the long day ahead
and i thought to my self, man there are 1,000's of guys sitting home wishing their feet were tired from standing all day signing autographs, getting paid, and living the dream.

i walked away laughing and it put me in a great mood....

Seems in todays marketplace BB'ers go from supplement company to supplement company like women and cars..

How have you managed to have such a long tenure with Universal?

you can find something wrong with everyone you work for, and they can find what faults you have too.

with saying that, i find that i'm really living the dream. i get to travel, go to the shows, have a sponsor, and in return i do what they ask with 100% dedication.

i dont look for a pat on the back, but always open for ways to do my job better.

i dont have an attitude and always try to smile and be good to the fans.....i'm getting paid to be a bodybuilder, i'm a happy camper.

i know this will come to an end one day...maybe this is my last year, or maybe i have 3 more years with the company. i have no clue, but they know they can count on me to do the job i'm hired to do.

I would think now that you have your Pro Card and are competing with the cream of the crop, that your even more valuable to the company, having an "IFBB Pro" in their arsenal......Best wishes and best of luck with everything!

i only eat fresh or fresh frozen. i would never eat out of a can...and when i'm training for a contest i dont eat carbs, so white or brown during the offseason means nothing to me.

i am not thinking of competing this year. i am moving my business this week to a new location, and i'm focusing more on that.

i havn't talked to john in  while.

we just trained, increased the weight about 10 to 20 lbs every set, went for 12-15 reps per set, and made sure we got a pump. nothing too fancy.

i am not winning because i have not really competed. after i got spanked in my pro debut's in pittsburgh and nyc last year, i realized i need to work on making my physique much better for the IFBB stage.....i wasn't in Kansas anymore.

I got spanked because those guys were BETTER than me. I dont know anything about any G4P, as I have NEVER done that crap....always had a real full time 9-5.

When is your next contest Vinny ? :)

i wanted to compete last night in the ny pro, but i relocated my business last weekend.  the renovations started april 1st so i thought it was best to focus on one thing.

looking at what is comming up next, doesn't look like i'll have time to compete in the summer shows. i want to settle into my new location of my personal training studio and make sure everything is running smooth.

believe it or not at 43 i'm having a better off season of eating and training than ever, so i'm not really in a rush. i want to do this the right way, and make an impact. also, i'm not going force my self into the 202 class. if i happen to be 202 on the day of my next contest, so be it....but if i'm 208 i'm going open....it's all about looking the best i can be, not what i weigh.

I was on ebay and saw the MuscleMag North American Bodybuilding Directory. I never heard of the thing before; I guess it is a giant phonebook.

Vinny is on the cover though.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Musclemag-Internationals-North-American-Bodybuilding-/270584275588?cmd=ViewItem&pt=US_Nonfiction_Book&hash=item3f00146284

forgot i had that one. you guys had me thinking, and i pulled out all my covers and articles dating back to 1993.
i had no idea, or atleast i forgot the stuff i been on and what mags i been in.

i am having everything framed and mounted, i never in the past put anything on my walls, it was all in a box. so now im redoing my home office and when i get them back from the frame shop i'll hang them up.

I will NOT be competing this year at all. I have a few guest posing lined up through the summer, but other than that, nothing else. I am having a good offseason and its the first time in about 10 years that i'm responding to training like this.

i'll be the first to admit that after i got spanked in my pro debut's, it was a very humbiling experience.
after 16 years of aiming for 1 goal of trying to turn pro, and then you actually do it...it was a hard adjustment. my debut's were the worst experience of all the shows i have ever trained for, and competed in.

i just guest posed recently and went and tried to get in shape using my old methods of carb rotation, depleating and carbing up. it did not work very well at all.

bottom line is....i know for a fact what works for me and that is what i will do for next year when i step on stage, but for now....with no pressure its fun to try stuff when you are not being judged.

good to hear on your post's your back and running,is it your changes in your body thats causing the old school carb process a problem?you stay lean naturally and have still good metabolism,so training and normal diet in the sense of a regular routine and maintence build ,u could do on carbs ,but to get on stage even to guest pose is still an on going learning process.i'm sure u probably looked good guestposing no?i kinda ran on and but u get the drift lol,,,,its good to hear your process and that u actually have tough time to get it right, modern bbing is seems is not getting easier or letting up on what it takes to make a top physique.at least you have garnered much respect from many judges, promoters and such that when u say thats all ,people could say vinny reached the pinnacle with his genetics and was one of the best jersey bbers ever.u have to admit the 90's was a great scene in jersey and u and a good handful of bbers made a big dent in the local and national scene, props ...

Hey Vin

The next time you step onstage, you should pose to Far from Over by Frank Stallone.......that would be awesome to see you up there looking your best, and then put on a routine that really gets the message across......that you are here to stay. Keep pumping that iron.......we are all behind you, bro!

i re-did my office and you got me thinking, so i dug deep and found 7 covers that i am on...and a bunch ads for universal from back in the day....so i had them framed.

back in the day Met Rx had the BASE and the Plus. No product compared. It was stupid to change the formula.
anyone who used the base and plus, i'm sure did not stay on board very long using the new met rx formula.

i never met connelly, but i did get a contract with EAS from Bill Philips.

2 questions Vinny:

1. Your favorite Era of Bodybuilding?

2. If you could step in a time machine, who would you want to compete against regardless of the outcome

1- right NOW. The 202 class is bringing conditioning back, and to a level we have not seen in a long time.
The bloated stomach is long gone, and rock hard ab's are back.

2- FRANK ZANE

dont know as of yet. i'm enjoying a great offseason with a bunch of guest posings over the summer.

even though i'm 43, i dont feel that i'm done yet, and dont feel the need to rush into anything. it took me 16 years to get here, why not do it right. maybe i should never had competed last yr and took the yr off to settle, but it's working out great for me right now with the added time in the gym. the one thing that i battle with...i'm sick of sucking down into a weight class, so who knows...maybe i'll stay around 212 for my next show and mix up with some freaks in the open.

it's funny, every guy i speak with that is in their early 30's say...noway at 40 will i be doing this.
i thought the same way when i was 33 and now that i found a good grove in training, past the ego stage, at 43 i feel good.

i just want to do it right, and not rush it.

i get alot of people saying...dont get huge and lose your v-shape. its not about getting huge for me, its all about not sucking down to make a weight anymore.

it was not enjoyable trying to make 198 all those years on the national level. and now, i just dont know what to do.
so thats why i'm doing NOTHING....lol

i here ya vin,but what ur saying about getting huge in the 1st place that wasn't your goal or bodytype, think about all the guys u trained with or friends that were heavier or appeared bigger ,then u stripped down then it was all over due to your overall look, thats as important as trying to get bigger or being big.its all relative and everyone know matter what they do,take, force all peak size wise, its shape, structure, joint size, that u have no control over.you got enough respect over the yrs with what u had and did with it.its a tough challenge to take your body clean, unnatural and put it to yrs and yrs of eating to gain, leanout, train heavy, train with more intensity, over and over ect.fun stuff.

when you say high volume, what number of sets are we talking for each boddypart?

Also what would you reccommend for a guy with geneticaly weak abs? i have to get down to pretty low bf in order to fully see them.

what would you suggest (training wise) to do in order to make them thicker?

thanks

i'm doing about 16 - 20 sets per body part, and i'm getting real decent gains from it...considering i'm 43 and pretty beat up from training for over 25 yrs. this style of training is giving my joints a much needed break, but...i'm actually getting bigger from it.
i like doing old fashioned crunches off the floor and with the rope off a pully. i too need to be very lean in order to my abs.

When you train, do you use any super setting.....or drop sets???? How long will you rest between sets??? Do you feel that the magazines confuse readers by not reporting training routines accurately???

seems like the magazines don't correctly report training routines of the top bodybuilders....when you go out to venice, you see how the champs actually workout......do you agree with me here???

Do you ever get acid reflux??? I recently quit drinking coffee due to the fact that the acid was killing me....to the point where I was unable to keep food down.....I did have an endoscopy done and they found nothing serious but they did tell me to get this under control. Just wondering if you ever suffer from this at all.....or people you know??? I may start using some papaya for easier digestion. Thanks in advance!

i have been talking to john defendis for the last 6 months, and i have adopted his method of high sets and reps. i do around 15 - 20 reps per set and about 16-20 sets per body part. i did try even higher amounts of sets like 25, but i respond better to no more than 20.

i do drop sets, super sets, and even giant sets.

i been training since i'm 16 yrs old, have a shoulder injury and most of my joints need a good warm-up, this style of training works great for me.

i think the mags get it pretty close to what the guys do in the gym.

i tore my bicep back in 06, and just dieted and did easy cardio every day.

did that for 8 weeks until i could start moving the arm, and gradually i got back into training. it wasn't until 1 year after that i was able to train armd 100%

yeah this thread died off cause i have not been around, and yeah been busting my ass. i'm not sure my next move, open or 212..

6th in Sacramento, 8th New York, and 7th in Toronto
all of my national level years i struggled to make wt. all the time, and now i'm facing this in the pro's....not enjoying it one bit.

i'm not one of these guys that carry crazy muscle, drop a bunch of weight to make 202, and still look awesome, i drop 4 lbs to make wt. and i look like shit.

i'm far from done. just going to step back, enjoy the summer, chill, and have an awesome offseason...and see where the chips fall.

i'm 44, but in no rush.....i'm just getting started.

good luck and like i stated good job on the 3 showing's,you some how fit in pretty good between the shorter stockier guy's and are not outmuscled due to your overall look, your build still looks fresh not tired but a heavier weight by just a few lbs could help.hope you find that balance somehow keep it up.
