i tapped my bjj teacher yesterday :(
« on: February 28, 2006, 08:22:29 AM »
ive been working with this guy for about a year and a half, and he must have tapped me about 1000 times by now ... hes a huge ripped purple belt (but hes also 43) .... yesterday i got his back and rolled off into armbar .... and the funny part is i feel kind of depressed about it (like the kid who surpasses his father)

i love it when we talk about our feelings!

You tapped him once and you think you've surpassed him?  Do it consistently maybe, but come on...   I've tricked a few purple belts into tapping, but they still tap me in a 2000:1 ratio :P.

Everybody gets caught!  It don't mean a thang.  Pat yourself on the back and move on.

One of the brown belts at my club was in a pissy mood yesterday.  Probably tapped me 7 times in under 5 minutes.  That fucker is so on my "list".

Yeah, but that is the most popular weight division so you'll get a lot of quick/small guys.  Will you be doing beginner or intermediate?

beginner is <1.5 years in this tournament ... so i can do it next year too!

im only 180 now so i guess ill probably stay in the 185 (even though im giving up weight i doubt ill meet anyone in the beginners whose functionally stronger than me) .... but its so tempting to go into the 170 and pretzle em ;D

How can you do it next year if you've already been rolling for 1 1/2 years?

Sandbagger!

Rolling with a purple belt for a year gives you a distinct advantage.  Even if he wasn't teaching you anything (which I highly doubt :P).

honestly, he never taught me anything (till after i learned the basics from omar) ... he liked rolling with me cause he wanted to see if he could overcome raw power with technique, thus teaching me would have been counter productive

when i began classes in september i didnt even know a basic guard pass....

The Las Vegas tourney good luck I have competed in those grapplers tourneys before and a lot of people sandbag it to win a 1st or 2nd place to win the points for their respective schools so good luck dude

Isn't that the final grand prix qualifier?  Those are 1.5 years for beginner, and you have to end the "season" in the division you started in.  So "sandbagging" wont be a problem really, after 1 1/2 years most likely you are a blue belt.

yep ... im hoping i can finish in the top 3 and get an invite

i can tap some blue belts, but i definately am not one ... i just happen to be ridiculously flexibly(i can do the full splits and put my legs behind my head!) and i have "retard strength" so i can out work most guys who have better skills

i still dont think im a sandbagger cause other than stalling i didnt learn anything when i trained with my boy ... youve seen the video of me rolling, did i really look like a guy with 1.5 years instruction??

No you didn't, but with no-gi flexiblity and strength are much larger factors than pure skill.  I can last a whole lot longer against the good guys at my club no-gi vs gi.

Have you been working your stand up?  In those videos you had the "push hard on them and hope they fall down" technique going for ya :P.
