It makes my day sad.

I worry about our troops in such a dangerous and unstable place, losing life and limb while refereeing a centuries old domestic conflict.

Also, why does posting news from cnn.com make me stupid?

You don't see that you're encouraging a withdrawal... which will send a message that we're losing the war.  ::)

This story was in today's Boston Globe. Hopefully the ice cream machines won't be disturbed by all this violence. We all know how important it is for people who live with bombs detonating and bullets flying to be able to enjoy their ice cream.

Suicide attack sinks bridge, leaves 10 dead

By Associated Press  |  April 12, 2007

BAGHDAD -- A suicide truck bomb exploded on a major bridge in Baghdad early this morning , collapsing the steel structure and sending cars toppling into the Tigris River below, police and witnesses said.

At least 10 people were killed and 26 injured, according to hospital officials. That toll was expected to rise.

Police were trying to rescue as many as 20 people whose cars plummeted into the water .

Hours after the blast, waves lapped up against twisted girders sinking into the water, as police patrol boats searched for survivors.

The al-Sarafiya Bridge connected two northern Baghdad neighborhoods -- Azamiyah, a mostly Sunni enclave, and Bab al-Muazam, a mixed area.

Police said the attack was by a suicide truck bomber, but Associated Press Television News footage showed the bridge broken apart in two places -- perhaps the result of two blasts.

Meanwhile, the US military announced two soldier deaths: One soldier was killed and two were wounded by a roadside bomb yesterday in an eastern section of the capital, and a soldier died a day earlier in an attack in southern Baghdad. One soldier was wounded in that attack.

At least 3,287 members of the US military have died since the beginning of the war in 2003, according to an AP count. The figure includes seven military civilians.

This is what reality is folks.

That's why we need the media.......

To tell what's really going on so we don't get glazed over by news stories that are significant to what's going on.

Things are getting worse IMO.

I wonder if there stats available that show number of deaths or attack over the 4 year period.

"A spokesman for the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad said no Americans were hurt in the blast."

Minnesota National Guard Improves Roadways

CAMP ADDER, Iraq, April 11, 2007 — Minnesota Army National Guard soldiers and Iraqi citizens of Al Batha recently restored 15 kilometers of Al Batha city streets in southern Iraq.
The soldiers of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division's civil military operations team supervised projects to grade the city's streets, which had not been repaired in the last 20 years. Most of the streets were nothing more than dirt trails with deep ruts from vehicle traffic.

"Many of the streets had eight-foot-wide pot holes filled with mud, sewage and garbage; making the streets impassable for municipal vehicles, daily routines and commercial transit," said Capt. Colin Fleming of Burnsville, Minn., 1/34 Brigade Combat Team deputy civil military operations officer.

The project restored many streets in Al Batha to serviceable gravel roads free of the sewage and debris that partially obstructed many of the city's streets.

The repair of the streets inspired Al Batha city officials to work with provincial authorities to pave the streets and complete the project. To date more than 30 miles of roads have been repaired in Dhi Qar province. The 1/34 Brigade Combat Team have completed several other road projects throughout Iraq.

Which news is more important?

1) Troops from the US were paid US tax dollars to fix potholes in Iraqi roads.  While there are still many potholes here in the US which are unfilled today.

2) Some suicidal maniac was able to get thru multiple checkpoints in supposedly secure US protected space to blow himself up in a govt building.

Team opens sixth water plant
Friday, 09 March 2007

By Master Sgt. Dave Larsen
1st Cavalry Division Public Affairs

CAMP ADDER — Children, community leaders and Coalition Forces attended the opening of a reverse osmosis water-treatment plant in Al Kuaam, Iraq, a small rural farming village of 2,000 people on the south bank of the Euphrates River, Feb. 18.

"We all know how important clean water is to public health, agriculture, and economic development," said Lt. Col. Larry Herke, chief of staff for the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division.

"The water treatment plant is a great example of the Iraqi Government making progress to restore basic services to the people of Iraq," said Herke.

The water purified by the plant is available to passersby through free faucets on site and distributed throughout the village by water trucks for a fee.

To put this in context, consider conditions before the plant opened: water was delivered from a neighboring city at the price near $3 U.S. for 45 gallons. The average unskilled laborer in Al Kuaam earns about $30 a month. Most families have at least eight members.

At the Red Cross's minimum recommended one gallon per person per day, a typical family's 240-gallon monthly water debt would cost more than half their total budget. Unable to afford clean water, most families drew water from the local rivers. According to UNICEF, 2 million tons of raw sewage is released into Iraqi rivers each day.

Using contaminated water is one of the reasons 80 percent of all patients at the local hospital suffer from waterborne diseases.

"The plant is capable of providing 20,000 liters of water an hour," said Capt. Colin Fleming, deputy civil military operations officer.

The 20,000 liters of water an hour is more than enough water for Al Kuaam. The plant can now provide enough clean water for more than 150,000 people.

The construction of the plant employed more than 45 local contractors and engineers funded by Coalition Forces through the brigade combat team. Since unemployment in the area is a major cause of unrest, the workers and their family members are thankful for the jobs in addition to the safe water.

The event was attended by Italian officials from the Provincial Reconstruction Team and Australian soldiers of the Overwatch Battle Group West 2 Civil Military Cooperation team. The Australian team met with local officials to work towards their own reconstruction projects in Dhi Qar province. Al Kuaam is located 70 miles west of An Nasariyah, the capital of Dhi Qar province in southeast Iraq.

The Al Kuaam plant is the sixth of its kind opened during the deployment of the 1/34 BCT.

The Minnesota National Guard 1st Brigade Combat Team, 34th Infantry Division includes soldiers from Iowa, Nebraska, Kansas, New Jersey, Georgia, and California plus several active-duty units.

a water plant and a fixed road.

Guess what - they do that stuff in the US all the time.  And it never makes CNN.  I guess our own media only likes to report bad things.

Guess what - they are doing their fucking job.  It's not a 'victory'.  It's a day's work.  It's not newsworthy, unless you need a compliment and a reacharound to do your job.

no offense mm69, but you sound more like a little bitch every day.  You're a racist, you think you deserve respect for serving, and you are uneducated when it comes to politics.  You suck.
