Look at the people around you and they always look the same. Why is it so hard for them to see the truth staring back at them in the mirror and make the changes necessary?
Where this that toxic monkey dude go? He always made me laugh when he would say he bodybuilds. Almost as sad as arvilla competing onstage.
People need to stop fussin and start lifting some real weight and not half assed like the girlie men mentioned above.
-
maybe they need your guidance
-
Do you recommend they adopt VOLUME training like yourself Alexx?
-
WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH PEOPLE WHO DO NOT MAKE ANY PROGRESS?
Easy: Lack of consistency
-
No. Volume training is no good. Heavy weights with proper form are good.

Whats the point in 'making progress'... the muscle is all going to come off sometime in the future, 2 years, 5 years...
Isn't it better just to maintain what you have and dont be obsessed after "gaining" and "progress".

That's a great attitude for old people in retirement homes who sleep in caskets.

Its a realistic attitude that comes with age. Why progress in the gym when its all going to come off anyway? Seems all a bit pointless.......
Better to keep what you have, dont go too heavy, stretch to keep everything toned and enjoy yourself rather than be obsessed with bigger is better.
That muscle will come off whether its 5 years from now or whenever...

Why do you attribut progression with size? You want to maintain, to define your muscles, that is progression too my friend. ;)

Bigger is better, up to a point. Also, the more muscle you have now, the more muscular you're likely to be later in life when your test levels start falling. If you plan on going to complete shit in just 5 years, you must have aids or something.

Serious question: you think taking third place (first place guy in my class went on to turn Pro after this show)
in my very first show (not entering the "novice Division" which is for first time competitors)
in the "Mens Open Heavyweight Division" is "sad" ?!?!?!?!!?!?!
(i even made the local newspaper, mine was the only photo used of the whole show)
lol!.............if that's your definition of "sad" ..........your more delusional than everyone thinks!

Yes, Yes, Yes, this is the biggest reason people don't make progress! without a doubt.

Yeah well the body is cyclic... train for 9 months then have a rest or 'go slow' period.
Its better to stick to the basics - chins, pushups, curls, free weight squats to keep muscles worked... anything else is just a bonus.

You must enjoy your 110 pound physique. ::)

Some people can't make ANY progress through life or their own body because they're hooked on alcohol and cocaine. :D

Well I'm just not fixated on the numbers game, I'm at an age where you get past that and realise this whole 'get big' thing is a con.
The sooner you realise that, the sooner you'll no longer be body-dismorphic.

You refuse to accept the effects a well developed physique and the character qualities it takes to get there have on other areas in life. Partial analysis is fine for single minded fools, and you fail to see the repercussions hard work in the gym can have on a persons character+++, which again will shape a lot of his life. Also, training = enjoyable, thus, it helps maximize the daily enjoyment of life.
In the global perspective, simple "numbers" in chess, training, bank account, test scores ++ means a lot, yet they might seem pointless if you focus your lens on the numbers themselves without seeing the bigger picture.
Many things such as becoming proficient at any activity can seem pointless to the simple humanoid. But the intelligent few knows the power of Gary Busey.
-
You refuse to accept the effects a well developed physique and the character qualities it takes to get there have on other areas in life.
Yeah but its dangerous for you heart to carry excessive muscle and besides all the eating just places too much stress on the body organs which low and behold breakdown hence all these BB's dying before they reach 50.
I wonder what % of gym rats will reach 50 on getbig? its like all the roidheads have a gun permanently pointed at their heads.

You are still body - building - muscle through pushups, chin ups so its pointless building excessive muscle when its just going to all fade anyway.. its fools gold. ;-)
Better to maintain the bodies musclar system rather than break it down with excessive weights, joint problems and other health issues.
Bodybuilding is a fools gold.

kawaks thats the same as saying 'why try to live when you will just die anyway' ::)
of course everyone will end up small and shriveled. so why not improve yourself while you can? its better to be HUGE for a while than to never be HUGE at all.

Your life experience has apparently taught you nothing. Why build muscle when its just going to fade away?
Why make money if you're just going to spend it?
Why fall in love if you're just going to get hurt?
Why wake up in the morning if you're just going to go to bed later?
Yeah that's a great way to go through life. ::)
Why don't you take your fatalist opinions to a site that helps with suicide, and go kill yourself. We're all going to die anyway, so what's the point in living?

It's not about how much you lift that determines your progress, alexxx.

No - these people are consistent, but they lift the exact same weights and do the exact same exercises day after day, month after month, etc....eat the same foods/calories as well :-\

actually, the reason most people don't grow is because they don't "think" they're doing anything wrong. Flex says to do front raises, side raises, rear raises, upright rows, pressing movements with a barbell and dumbbells and shrugs for thier shoulders. So they go ahead and do that on Monday and Thursday since Flex says to do this kinda split. Then they decide that maybe they need another pressing movement so they throw that in there and pretty soon they're doing 25-30 sets just for shoulders and can't figure out why nothings working. Maybe they're using 50% of the weight they could on some movements cause they're trying to have a "mind muscle connection" or they're concentrating on pretending they're pouring a gallon of milk on thier side laterals so to get the exact feel they want they're using the monster 15 pound dumbbells.
here's the bottom line....get rid of the garbage movements like all the laterals-they are not gonna build a whole lotta size anyway. Dudes spend way to much time doing garbage movements, grab a heavy ass barbell or dumbbell and grit your teeth and bust your balls. Eat enough and get enough rest. it's not that hard but people are so jumbled up from all the garbage articles in all the magazines they can't figure out what they shoudl be doing.

Son, you miss my point entirely..... there is no point exhausting yourself in a gym building oversized muscles which ultimately causes joint and internal organ problems due to abuse/missuse.
Isnt it more sensible to do everything in moderation... eat 3 small meals per day, exercise and keep fit rather than going to extremes and obliterating your body by 50???
-
oh man savage owning :D :D
E
C'mon Earl, I'm merely putting the challenge to 'lifters' to do everything in moderation rather than destroy their bodies before 50.
I'm thinking LONG TERM survival not this short term crap many bodybuilders are obsessed with.

You presuppose that Debussey = talking about being abnormally huge.
Debussey was talking about everybody that are in good shape. Being around 180 - 210 pounds in good condition, drug free or on small amount of roids under docs supervision = not a big health risk.
Being a 250 pound roidhead = just stupid. If you are talking about teh roidheads, Debussey agrees.

I'm merely trying to stop the abuse today so your body will thank you 10, 20 years hence, dofus.
Maybe you'll realise that after you've stuffed your knee's at 35 years of age from squatting 450 for reps.
Youth is merely a passing phase.. in fact for most of your life you will be old.

Thanks, I'm just concerned about these guys in a few years time becomming huge and then by the onset of age/time (which have no mercy) noting the inevitable loss of muscle mass and the mental trauma associated with that decreased muscle size.
Then again, to weigh things up equally we can only die trying to get as huge as possible...
I say f1ck growing old, to hell with the passing of time, ageing is for the weak.

Do you think your views applies to naturals? Natural mass = not lost quickly.
Ps: Some of us has a lot more going in our lives than "becoming hoooooge". Debussey has Gary Busey.

majority alexx just go to the gym, they dont "train" outside of the gym- bodybuilding is a 24 hr sport- hence many folks will only visually change so much, and thats it- compared to more advanced folks that ar emore extreme with their diets.

yet another non bodybuilder posting on a bodybuilding board,,, 3 small meals and bodyweight exersizes, fuckn hardcore!!!...
people dont make progress because they get stuck in there ways, im not talking about no hopers who cant get over 200lbs,, im on about people who get to a sertain size then stall.. its all down to not bein able to push your self to train even harder and to scare your self with new weights or to eat above your normal dietry requirements.... nearly every gym ive been to the same people are benching 2 plates a side or squating 3 plates a side,, year after year..and they look the same, year after year
-
Change things up is what I say,
before I use to smoke before the gym....then i was like fuck it, smoke weed after ....now im in the phase where I lift for a half hour, go outside blaze.....then come back to lift....
Weed > steroids

You can't sum up everyone is one post, but here are the top 3 reasons I believe:
1. Diet
2. Effort put forth in each workout
3. Consitency over time
For some, it's just not that important. Lifting is extremely boring to me, if I'm not pushing towards some look, bulking up or cutting up. Going through the motions with no intensity is just gay. I'd rather not lift.
Almost nobody has a conistent great diet for months at a time, let alone years.

look at the fat bitch on the treadmill??? she walks at 1 mile talking to her friend next to her, whats the purpose of that, she is obviously going to the gym to lose weight, but i figure in the fat bitches mind she always knows she will never lose weight or look good..

(1) Its pointless killing yourself in the gym today when a few years from now you will look back and wonder why you ended up with the knee and shoulder joints of a 75 year old at age 40.
2) Looking forward say 10 years from now, its better to train today with medium weight 1 - 3 times per week with 3 small meals a day.
That way you save your body for the future, a wise choice IMO.
-
Hi TA! :D
Yeah well its YOUR CHOICE bud, but I bet you at age 60, I'll be the one still standing with a good physique and having the last smilie. ;-)
-
My choice that you are TA? Nahh, I can't control who you are...or which one of your personalities decides to express itself.
Again, you pump yourself full of steroids and heavy weights, I'll stay clean and in shape and we'll see who is the last one standing.
Deal or no deal, buddie?
-
Geeze TA, who said I pump myself full of steroids and lift heavy weights? Steroids are illegal and really, really bad for your health. That's quite the unfair and unfounded accusation -- don't you think?
:(
You refer to me as "TA" a dime a dozen, no? I'm assuming you workout... maybe that is an unfair and unfounded accusation as well?

Yes, but you are TA. I'm not accusing you. It's an obvious fact. I like your True Adonis personality much better -- at least you advocate McDonalds and Ben & Jerrys: two things I really like! This personality is too...hmm, how to say it?...troll-ish? ...I guess that's an apt description....sorry I can't come up with a better description right now off the top of my head...
Well, most older guys here have the wisdom that comes with bodybuilding for decades, I'm in that 'troll category' if you like. ;=9
Yeah, the muscle memory doesnt take long to kick in **if** I want to up the weights, but whats the point if only to scare a few skankists with a great side chest, huh?
Sure, I enjoy getbig and being only a post away from chatting with a ex-N-current-champs.... something we couldnt even imagine 20 years ago if we tried.
Yeah, the "Gossip and Opinions" forum is too "katty" IMO from time to time.
There appear to be guys on this board who are acting up 'cause they don't have anything better to do.
But they are the one's who ultimately have to accept responsibility for their behaviour IMO.
Good luck with you're training and just enjoy/accept the genetics you have been blessed with.
Takes a lot of frustration out of the mix with that mindset, I can tell you!
'Cause there are a million and one guys worse off out there.

Thanks for the advice
Is it better to be a sane gym kamikaze pilot or insane gym kamikaze pilot on a suicide mission?
I tell you some of the lifters here are in the second category. :P
Maybe Ron can setup "Voting Polls" to find out??

I'm sorry...and you are? I was conversing with kawaks (or True Adonis, whichever he prefers) and he was accusing me of using drugs.

People need to stop fussin and start lifting some real weight and not half assed like the girlie men mentioned above.
So many people go too heavy so that they cant control the weight properly and so dont make improvements to their physique. Personally i made my best gains when i reduced the weight slightly and controlled the movement alot better. Sooo many people you see bouncing the bar off their chest etc for the sake of doing 2/3 plates whatever.

the one thing your forgetting is that a good % of people in the gym have no idea what they should be doing. A guy can be consistant for 5 years but if he's consistantly doing the wrong things he's not gonna go anywhere. YOu have to be objective in looking at yourself and deciding what does and does not work.
-
Really?? what do you do now?
Lets just say "not lifting them heavy-assed weights".
Once you hit 40 you gotta make adjustments.
-
Ok I saw the title of this thread and had to post a link..... Whaaaat isssss the deal ???
-
Here's the deal, NZ:
This is another perfect example of "do as I say not as I do". Mr Shaw is advising against heavy lifting, because as he puts it "the gains won't be there in 5 years". Shaw says that he's over 40 now, so his philosophy does not apply in the least to people younger than he is.
The biggest underlying factor that causes pros and ex-pros to condemn gear and heavy lifting could be as simple as "I don't want people to get better than me." I saw Lee say it in the BB Fans board, and here is another example. What a joke.
You might mean well, but hypocrasy is never cool.

muscle grows through progressive resistance. You can do as many fancy shmancy programs but for the most part if you drop all the garbage movements and slap on some heavy weights on compound movements you'll progress....as long as you remember to progressively increase the resistance you're working with.
it's not rocket science like some guys make it out to be.

Al, it is rocket science if you look around your average gym
how many times do you see guys working out with a spotter and the spotter is doing 40% of the work. On top of that the ROM is 1/4 of what it should be.
Other than myself and maybe 2 other guys I have never seen anyone doing more than 1/3 ROM on squats in my gym.
I usually go all the way down, ofcourse I am not pushing impressive weights but still. I am trying to maximize hypertrophy.
oddly enough those 2 guys are showing gains also.
over and over I see guys with a good amount of weight for their size doing what I call "hip thrusts", nothing near a squat.
how many times have you seen little guys doing a lot of weight on the tricep press down but working their shoulders instead. I think that it is more a matter of them now knowing how to train properly..coupled with ego lifting.
-
Lets just say "not lifting them heavy-assed weights".
Once you hit 40 you gotta make adjustments.
so does that mean your a Personal trainer?
-
Gayer than making 'adjustments' hahahha oh brother

I am with you, it is not rocket science. The thing I see most is people getting all gung ho about getting in shape and hitting the gym really hard, most of the way over training, and your right not focusing anything on diet, you don't have to be hardcore, but do a few basic things, in a short time they get burned out. So, they go at it for 3 weeks, missing a few work out here and there, then stop for 2 weeks or more, come back for a week, and then get discouraged because they aren't making progress. I hear from them a year later saying, I really need to get back in the gym.

I think you have missed the point. Listen to your physique.
If you are smart, you don't have to lift massive poundages to 'getbig'.
Know your boundaries and dont end up with those all too familiar bicep, quad and tricep tears.
Train smart and still look great in you're later years, that's all I'm saying.
-
You are still body - building - muscle through pushups, chin ups so its pointless building excessive muscle when its just going to all fade anyway.. its fools gold. ;-)
Better to maintain the bodies musclar system rather than break it down with excessive weights, joint problems and other health issues.
Bodybuilding is a fools gold.
These are the people that don't really know about it. I mean for me it's no more strange than to get in a car and go, in a quarter mile, five seconds. That to me is strange.
Still, I'll try to maintain my "musclar" (sic) system.......

Well good for you; another convert to the cause of ending body dismorphism.
I just hope you aren't looking at yourself in the mirror at every opportunity and thinking you look 'small' despite being 110kg of muscle.
-
WHAT'S THE DEAL WITH PEOPLE WHO DO NOT MAKE ANY PROGRESS?
I don't know. Tell us about your training and perhaps Chick and the other pros here can help you.

Oh my god, I think I've just found someone on getbig who is unfamiliar with a Pumping Iron quote (from no less than the Governator himself).
P.S. BerzerkFury, your comments are the fucking nuts, keep putting those nobheads in their place, dude.
