Post by: calfzilla on November 20, 2012, 04:57:38 AM
What do getbiggers who have owned Corvettes think of them? Please comment on any year, I'm itching to get one. Not sure which year maybe a mid 90s?

C1-C2 (1950's to 1972) or C5 or C6 (1998-up)
Wouldn't bother with the mid 90's.

my brother had a c5 and sold it for a c6. the c6 is miles ahead of the c5. handles 100x better in the curves

My favorite is the 1982 Stingray... That was just a gorgeous piece of machinery.

68 Corvette ZL1 - 427ci all aluminum big block that was supposed to make over 650hp. Some say it may have made over 700.

Mine too. Can't compete with the C5-6's in the performance aspect, but they are hands down the best looking IMHO.
When they went away from the chrome bumpers and accents is when they started going downhill IMHO.

I have a yellow '77.  It'll get a LOT more looks than any C5 or C6 around town.  Obviously, as with any other older car, you don't get much in the way of the performance aspect of a modified C5 or C6, but it is a lot cooler.

I have not, haven't been around a lot of the early Vette's. Anymore I think they're mostly driven back and forth to car shows and rarely ever get the power put to the ground.

Well I do know that you couldn't get the big 427 in convertible Camaro's because of that fear, aside from COPO orders... so it's definitely a possibility. I believe the Vette in 68 was a full frame car, I can't imagine GM would do a fiberglass unibodied car with a big block, seems like asking for trouble.

Only three or four of those ZL1 Corvettes were produced. I use to work with a GM Engineer that worked at the Corvette plant when the ZL1 was produced. The yellow one pictured was a Company Driven vehicle. He said noone wanted to drive it because of constant overheating. They finally spun the speedo with a drill to get enough mileage on the Vette to get it out of the program and auctioned off.

My 2 Vettes
1994 LT1 6 speed.

I was wondering if LS block prices would drop with new gen motor coming out.

I was pleasently surprised to find LS3 complete engine going for 5g~ complete crate motor reman around 5g~ and complete new crate motor around 6.5g very impressive!

I am looking at getting an L33 5.3 though for my project car with a t56 from a gto (front engine rwd config vs the vette ones which are mounted in the rear)

Even googled up some ls3s for 4k~ on sale... very nice... would hope they drpo more :)

An LS3 with some quality boltons, header, exhaust, cam, tune, would be sick in my 2300lbs track car :)

LS engines are fairly cheap to buy and modify. With the next generation engine using direct injection and cylinder deactivation it will up the price of mods.

Gorgeous car.  The rear looks too squarish in comparison with the rest of the car and the black A-pillars clash with the color of the roofline.  Also, the round exhaust tips are not in line with the squared-out rear.  I'm surprised the next gen engine was a 6.2, I had read it was going to be a 5.0ish size motor with high compression.

Interior looks to be a massive upgrade.  Corvette is all about performance-to dollar, which to this day remains virtually untouched.
Title: Re: Corvettes
Post by: US MUSL on January 16, 2013, 08:17:11 AM
^^ From what I've read the reasoning for the 6.2l engine was cylinder deactivation. Once it reduces to 4 cylinders it will still be 3.1l powerplant and have decent cruising power. At 5.0l it would reduce to 2.5l. In the past the GM engineers said they didn't go with cylinder deactivation because they didn't think the Corvette owners would like the change in exhaust tone. Wonder what they did anything with the exhaust to change this issue.

At 5.0l it would reduce to 2.5l. In the past the GM engineers said they didn't go with cylinder deactivation because they didn't think the Corvette owners would like the change in exhaust tone. Wonder what they did anything with the exhaust to change this issue.

I doubt anyone will be particularly interested in the exhaust tone when they are not putting the hammer down.

Well, I was thinking they may do a small v8 with a twin turbo setup, far more efficient fuel usage and power but I guess not! There was the rumor I kept hearing about a 5.0 to 5.5 liter v8 with a turbo but i guess not!

I heard the C6 ZR1 started out as a twin turbo. The first test mule burned to the groung and the head of the Corvette team said no more turbos. Having said that I think there still is a possibilty for a smaller ci/turbo engine in the future. Maybe the next top of the line performance Vette.

but damn, the lingenfelter is badass, very much one of the best rides ever made.is it somewhat streetable?
LT1's are notorious for ignition issues, the Optispark is a piece of shit.

It has a reverse rotation waterpump, never really heard anyone bitch about them. The ignition issue was HUGE however.

The LT1 waterpump isn't the issue, it's in the normal small block Chevy location. But, for some reason the engineers placed the ignition distributor/optispark between the waterpump and the block. With this placement if the waterpump leaks it will take out the distibutor. To me the optispark was a great idea, just bad placement.

The Lingenfelter TT drives just like a normal C5, even gets ~28 mpg on the highway. But when you hit the gas hold on, it has gone almost sideways at 70 mph!!

yeah, its way too camaroish

I disagee, traditional round tail lights would not have gone well with the rest of this car's angles.  Someone photoshopped round lights on a c7 and it looks horrible!

Not saying this is your demographic - but I think the majority of people who still prefer round over angular taillights on the Vette are the older traditionalist vette fans.

Too bad in Canada for some dumb reason Vettes are double the prices they are in the states.

They actually fixed it this year, the C7 starting price in Canada dropped a chunk from the outgoing C6 in Canada.  Actually right now with the exchange rate I think it might even be cheaper in Canada than the U.S. by a tad!  They will probably re-adjust next MY, but it serves GM Canada right for gouging Canadians for years while the exchange rate was near par.  Lucky for me this is my first Corvette so I never got screwed over with pricing different in Canada for the previous MYs.

Thanks, everything is right from the factory. They offered a "stinger stripe" which is a thicker half-stripe on the upper part of the hood as well as the dual stripes that mine has.

The only few touches I might do are to blacken out that thin chrome strip in the front, blacken the chrome stingray emblem on the sides, and add a few small black Jake skulls

I have a yellow '77.  It'll get a LOT more looks than any C5 or C6 around town.  Obviously, as with any other older car, you don't get much in the way of the performance aspect of a modified C5 or C6, but it is a lot cooler.

Lol let's be real, the C3 is cool but its not getting more looks than a C6 widebody like the ZR1, Z06 or Grand Sport, especially comparing yellow to yellow

Holy shit, it's amazing how dumb some c.unts are.

The fuckin ZL1 was tested by road and track on a rolling road dyno back in the day and made 342 DIN hp.
This equates to around 400 SAE crank HP which is just a bit short of the claimed 430 SAE HP.

Cool, what colour combo was the one you saw?

There's quite a few ways you can personalize them since, besides there being a whole bunch of exterior colours, there's various wheel options, different types of stripes and then stripes are also offered in various colours.  I would be surprised if even 1 out of 100 Stingrays on average have the same yellow and black stripes/wheels/etc. combo that I got.

They had a Can-Am ZL1 that made well over 600. If you think it's hard for a BBC with rectangle port heads to make over 600 you know literally NOTHING about the motors. And there were only 2 of the Vettes made with the ZL1, the Camaro was a different animal.

Sorry about my harsh comment. I didn't think you weren't talking about the Can-Am race tuned engine which I'll admit was in line with your figures but was a racing engine. You were talking about the 68 ZL1 in your original post. I guess my comment was more aimed at the bozo who said that they pretended the engines were lower powered for "insurance purposes".

What colour and transmission choice would you prefer?  You obviously can't always get the exact combo you want when getting used but you sometimes you can if its a common combo or if you check around enough.

How long have you wanted a c5 for?  I think you'll be ecstatic when you finally get it.

cool maybe its not such a rare combo after all LOL.

I was told that of the 30+ C7's sold in my city this year I was the only one who choose yellow.  And only a few of the 30+ even ordered the dual stripes of any colour.

Before mine arrived I was frequently googling my colour combo to try to view examples of actual photographs of it rather than just the configurator's sketches, and had a very hard time finding pics of it, even though there were tons of red, white, black, gray, etc. examples.

My second choice was actually white (or silver) with orange stripes.  I liked the idea of orange stripes but wasn't sure which colour they would go best on.  In the end I'm glad I chose yellow with black stripes though, had I not I think I would have regretted it every time I saw a yellow C7, whereas I doubt I'll regret it if/when I see a white or silver with orange stripes.

I took my car out of my garage today for the first time as there's no more snow or ice on my driveway, it let me take pics at a few angles which I wasn't able to previously.

Well been a big corvette can for a long time. My dad has owned several but i never have. I don't care too much about transmission but I want a black c5. I did want a c4 because they are cheaper but I like that the c5 has more curves so I would be willing to pay more.

Color for me depends on the year. C5 I like black. C4 black or yellow. To back to the 70s and I like the bright colors; red, blue, green and even orange.

'70-'72 is my favorite.

I've always been a corvette fan since the The Magician tv show with the 74 corvette. They lost me in the 90's but their latest models won me over again. First time I saw one I was driving IH35 northbound in Austin Tx. I saw a red sports car ahead of me I couldn't identify. I thought it was an exotic import until I caught up to it and realized it was the new body style. They did an outstanding job!
