Title: Most impressive lifting feat you have seen IN PERSON in the gym?
Post by: Howard on January 02, 2006, 02:23:38 PM
I think many of us have seen Ronnie and his incredible lifts in his videos, but not too many us have ever seen him in person lifting like that. I was curious about some of the better lifting any of you have seen in person in various gyms.
For me , it was when wroking out with former top AAU America contender , Rick Postin . This was in summer 1986 at his incredible , hardcore gym that used to be in Tampa. I was lucky enough to train with him. He did 315 for 5 decent reps press behind the neck , seated with a basic barbell at a body wt of around 230. He also did  275 for 7 reps on tricep EZ bar skull crushers.

In my book any basic barbell, DB , free wt move is a lot more impressive than a leg press or hammer machine, etc.
:DI did 9 good , strict reps a few years back with 315 on the BP in front of the freshman football players at my school. Not world class but the yound lads were impressed to see a coach do that in person. :D

I am getting back into basic for reps these days, any others?

I saw a guy bench 405 for 5 reps a few months ago. I also saw a ~225 lb bodybuilder bench 375 for 7 reps and squat 5 plates for 4 or 5 reps.

Most unexpected thing i've seen in a gym...

About 10 years ago I worked in a hardcore gym that has many bodybuilders and lots of drugs there.

One day this guy came in to deliver some drinks or something and hung around to say hi to some guys training who he'd obviuosly known from the neighbourhood since they were kids.

This guy was a bulky dude but had a good gut on him and not a lot of arm size or anything. One thing I noticed though was the size and thickness of his wrists and fingers. I think he was greek or italian.

Anyway, after talking to his friends for a bit he grabbed the 140's and, without any warmup, sat on the press chair and repped out a perfect set of 12reps with great form.

I found out later he was a national junior powerlifting champ when he was a kid years before.

There are like 3 guys 21-23 yo in the gym. They all Juice. I was pretty impressed when I saw them Squat the other day.

They get under 135, warm up,

225, easy, 12 reps... then this is where it gets good...

315, just was easy as 225- about 12 reps..

405, ok again, pretty easy- id say about 10 reps!

495! this is 5 plates..(as u know)...i think they get like 6 or 8 reps..

585! 6 plates- ok, this is where it looed heavy...jujst a few reps..but STILL!

It just looked really easy...the went pretty low too, at least parallel, and they were fast reps too.

Impressed me- heck, i go 225, 275, 315, and 405 bit maybe 4 reps on 405. I cant imagine another  plate on.. :o

Anyhow, They are on alot of stuff, I talk to them and they tell me. I guess it works! :) There legs dont look tha tbig,  like their upper bodies..

Well I thought I was doing pretty good w/#365 bench for 5 reps one day. When out of nowhere this big guy in dirty sweats...........must have been 6'2 around 300 pounds warm up w/315, then tossed another 45 on. He then pressed the 405 up and down so fast and under control that the plates rattled loud. ( God I love that). I lost count after 10 reps. He then tossed another plate on for 495 and rattled that for around 5 reps with ease. He then through his sweat towel over his shoulder picked up his bag and walked out the door as his friend unloaded the bar for him.
No matter how strong I may have felt before I was humbled to say the least. This dudes forearms where like Popeye's, and the rest of him was nuttin but muscle too.

Man, this is going back 15 years at least. We had this shortish guy, about 5'5", who was just the right dimensions to make every lift textbook and smooth. When he squatted it was with perfect form, slow down and up - it looked like he was just sitting down on a chair. Saw him do 30 reps with 315. Killed him tho and he was on the floor getting his wind for a good 5 mins but I've never forgotten that one.

Tom Prince doing a 365 lbs military press, for several reps, on Gold's in 1997. Magnussen leg pressing 1800 lbs at Power Gym in Miami, in 1998. These were the two most impressive lifts I've seen, in person.

When I lived in South Carolina, I knew a guy named Bill who was a one time a world-class power-lifter. Bill was around 6'2 & weighed at least 350lb. One day I came in late & Bill was doing partial deadlifts . Not set high either, he was doing 3/4 of a full pull. The bar was full to the end w/45's. I walked up & asked Bill if he had wrist wraps & he told me(swear to God) he only used wraps when he went heavy. He put a little chalk on his hands pulled his belt tight & did 10 easy (almost effortless) reps. I asked what he considered heavy & he said anything over 1000lbs. If you would have seen that like I did, like me you would have probably believed him. He was absolutely the strongest guys I have EVER seen, bar none. He almost got kicked out of Gold's because he bent the sh*t out of every bar they had

I think seeing Bertil Bench 500 for 6 reps with no warmup was pretty neat.  In fact EVERYONE thought it was neat.  I always thought Roy Callendar and Bill Pettis doing dips with (2) 150 lb. dumbells hanging from their waist was cool to see.  And they would do pullups too.  Franco doing bent over rows with 405 with no shirt on was awesome.  Watching Tom Platz train calves was always an event.  There is a chubby white guy here who at 5'9" 325 lbs. squats 800 very very deep for reps really easy.  Seeing Joe Onasai BNP 500 for reps with no lift off was unreal and it was video live on the news.  And it seemed allot of people liked watching me lift too.

Sorry, man, but I don't think this is possible. Isn't the recordin the dead-lift under 1000 lbs? I think it's something between 900 and 1000 lbs. Either this guy was deceiving you, or you have know idea what you're talking about.

he said it was in the rack, that's possible i was in the gym one day and the late strongman competitor Johnny Perry came in to talk to a few people who were in town for a competition and they were doing rack pulls from well below the knees, they had 775 on the bar and Perry pulled it for 5 reps in street clothes with no warm up, he was a monster 6'5" 400lbs.

The 100 db curls reminded me of Kazmaier warming up with the 100's.  Like it was nothing.  I couldn't warmup with that but I did end up doing the hammers with him at 130 lbs.  He was strrong as hell in the gym.  405 on the bench I swear looked like 135 to anyone else.  I too have seen guys unload the leg press all on one side and it falls over.  My nipple getting pinched off was a huge event in my gym since I was screaming my head off after I did it.

i was training some strongman events at a gym we used to go to and tried the farmers walk for the first time with 225 in each hand and picked them up and got about 6 feet with them, haha, then a couple of guys who had been training these events for a while picked them up like they were nothing and literally started running with them, i couldn't believe it, they fininshed a 120 meter course with them in 18 seconds.

Many years ago, I had the privilege of training with Bob Weiland.  Bob is a double amputee.  He lost his legs in a mine explosion while serving in Vietnam.  Incredibly strong and huge during the period he was focusing on strength development.  He specialized in the bench press during which I had to fasten him to the bench with specially designed straps before he would perform the lift.  I personally spotted him for two strict repetitions with 512 lbs.   After the set, we verified his bodyweight at 232 lbs.

Bob Weiland has accomplished many other amazing feats.  He has completed many marathons by "walking" with his hands.  However, the most incredible accomplishment may be completing the Iron Man Triathlon.  Again, I was fortunate enough to assist in his preparation on occasion.  It was unreal to observe him diving into the deep end of an Olympic size swimming pool and lap swim 2 to 3 miles several days each week.

He had a tremendoulsy positive attitude and outlook on life during the time I assisted in his training regimen.  Bob told me he used to train with the late great Pat Casey and incorported many of Mr. Caseys' training principles into his own philosophy.  I have not seen Bob for several years, but I would guess he is still challenging himself.  I think he currently resides in California.

the Smith bar in our gym weighs 10 pounds, it's one of those gay Get Flexed ones where you push at an angle, i always like telling guys, "damn dude three plates on each side, 280, good job dude, they almost always say, that's 315, and i come back with, the bar is only 10 pounds.

My 20 year old training partner (natural !) is 5'8" 230 solid. Benches 430, military presses 315 for 5, front squats 405 for 6, deadlifts 600. He did some New England natural powerlifting comp in Oct. He squated 520 with no suit, benched 420, and deadlifted 585. He was the only one in the thing without a squatsuit. Doesn't even train for powerlifting. He's gonna be the white Ronnie Coleman, I've never seen genetics so good!

I was out in Venice in September, at muscle beach and saw a short Russian guy do shrugs (10 good reps) with 8 45's and 2 10's on each side of the bar.  I thought he was going to deadlifts at first but he ended up doing shrugs.  It was the craziest thing I've ever seen, that's the most impressive lift I've seen.

what's the big deal with that you're only moving the bar two inches.

i was training some strongman events at a gym we used to go to and tried the farmers walk for the first time with 225 in each hand and picked them up and got about 6 feet with them, haha, then a couple of guys who had been training these events for a while picked them up like they were nothing and literally started running with them, i couldn't believe it, they fininshed a 120 meter course with them in 18 seconds.

6 feet what a beast HAHAHAHAHAHAH

There is this big black dude at my gym that uses these big ass chains with 365 for at least 10 reps at the end of his workouts...the same guy does 85lb DB preacher curls with ease...he squats anywhere between 315-700 on leg day...hes a friggin animal

Back when I was training at Svend Karlsen's gym, I saw him do 5 reps with 395kg (869 pounds) in deadlift!!

He was then a IFBB pro, but realised he would have more success as a strongman - and sure enough he won the World's Strongest man a few years later...

In the old days, a guy named Jamie Taylor (maybe 5'7, 225) doing bent BB rows with 405 and military's with 305.   I was much younger and a lot smaller then, so I was easily impressed.  Toxic, you ever hear of him?

I also saw a chick who was obviously new at the lifting game slide a 45lb plate off the bottom holder and onto her toe.  It literally took what seemed like 2 full seconds before the signal hit her pea-brain and then she was crying her head off. :'(

my buddy's dad is 46 years old, hasn't trained in years.  back in his highschool days, he placed second in states in wrestling, only to be kicked off the team the following year.  the guy always told us stories of his strength, and i always remained rather dubious.  he apparently benched 350 at a bodyweight of 128 during his senior year.  well, today he weighs 154 at a height of 5'2", with a moderate gut.  his son, my best friend and genetic freak, got a set of weights in the garage as a birthday gift.  one day while we were messing around with them, his dad came in, loaded 280 on the bar and pumped out an easy 12 reps.  the guy does not train, he is just a natural animal.

Yesterday, I guy at my gym that won the Mr. Pittsburgh strongman comp a few years back was doing squats with 765 for a single.  But he did it only wearing a belt and knee wraps.  NO SQUAT SUIT.  He the hung 100lb dumbells from the bar, for a total of 965, and did partial reps.  It was just amazing.  And he did this with no spotter.  Just in a squat rack.

I have seen some big numbers in my gym, but i think the most impressive was a 140 kilos (300 lb more or less?) bench press for 6 reps...
I know, this may not seem so big, but have in mind that the guy who did it weights like 130 lbs, and has like 5 foot...He is very cut, so a lot of his weight its muscles, but he is very small, given his height...
For sure, pound per pound, the most strong guy i have seen (he has some other strong exercises too, leg presses, military presses, barbell rows...etc...)

I'll tell you the funniest. Jimmy Pelechia in an under armour shirt on the smith machine close grip benching 6 plates a side with a spotter doing deadlifts to help him.

To be fair to Jimmy, I have seen him curl 100's and he's damn strong, but whenever he'd do bench excersizes I'd laugh my ass off.

Oh yeah, and he's a real nice guy too. I'd run into him in 7-11 at like 3AM sometimes, he'd be baked and getting coffee and he'd always chat me up.

The football coach at my high school, a former Marine, picked up 200lb kid and threw him like a ragdoll about 12 feet because he was acting like a dick.

The same coach also plays with the football team during their practices WITHOUT a helmet (when he plays at lineman, he still smashes his head on their facemask and doesn't even care).

And again, the same coach also benched 405 for about 8 reps, easily, with no warmup just to show up a loudmouth kid.

455lb BNP for 5 reps  :o
585lb incline bench for 5 reps  :-X
120lb dumbbell side lateral raises for 6 reps  :D
150lb concentration curls for 6 reps

Then did drop sets
90lb seated hammer curls for 12
then 80, 70, down to sixty all for 12 reps.

And again, the same coach also benched 405 for about 8 reps, easily, with no warmup just to show up a loudmouth kid.
all bullshit.

220'S??? Don't believe it. Not full range of motion atleast.

Hell, When I was down at Metroflex two years ago, Ronnie was 325 and shoulder pressing the the 150s for 7. People don't realize just how hard that is to do. There are 220 pound dumbells there. Fuck, I can't even lift one, let alone two.

this guy walks into my gym 7'2 740lbs (yeah we all know hight and weight by simply looking) he walks up to the bench and simply by staring at the bar it started moving, simply amazing, anyway he puts on 395 and im thinking no way but sure enough he does 76 reps (yup we stand and count in front of people in the gym) then he gets up and at this point hes sweating and breathing heavy and he throws on another 8 plates on each side and he just throws it up and down, I simply lost count (yup when they do the light weight usually for more reps we dont lose count but on the real heavy that most do only a few we do lose count)

Oh before I forget he was a real nice guy too (yeah sure because when someone outsizes you you convince yourself hes a nice guy because your gay ass cant do anything about it if he was a asshole, meanwhile the 175lb kid is always a asshole)

get real people you sound stupid to those here with a half of brain

I saw Dan Kovacs (powerlifter) repping with 5 plates per side on the incline bench.  This was in my old gym near Pittsburgh, PA

I trained at Chester's Gym in Hickory, NC in the mid-90s.

While there, I saw powerlifter Grant Pitts (6'0", 350+) regularly rep out with the 150s on DB press at the end of his shoulder workout.  He could do 405 benind the neck press for @ 5 reps.  There was a picture of this between the squat racks...  That was daunting, as an 18 year old, seeing a man press WAY more than I could squat!  Don't get me started on what the man squatted!

Another man there, Gene Howell, 2nd (beat LaCour) in the Heavies af the first Team Universe(@ 5'8", 240), was a beast in terms of raw strength.  I watched him squat 715 for 10 reps wearing a belt and wraps.  No squat suit or briefs.

Finally, there's a dude in Va Beach, Jake, that runs a DSD that I have seen deadlift over 700 lbs., in a meet, at @ (I'm guessing) 210 lbs.  I say guessing because he was between 198 and 242, ripped year round and not terribly tall.

I've witnessed a HUGE powerlifter do 365lb  on incline press for over 10 full reps, at a fast pace, at Gold's Gym in Scottsdale.  He wasn't even struggling.  And this was doing numerous warm-ups. I was natural at the time, but looking back, I wonder how much test susp and anadrol this guy had in his system that day?  Still an amazing feat of strength regardless.

Most impressive lifts I have seen personally.
An Olympia contender (who never placed higher than 16th equal) do perfect form 315 bnp for 15 reps just after working up from 6 or 7 previous sets.
Watching one of my gym buddies at 6 foot 6 do ass to the grass squats with 615 for 12 reps.
Watch one of the world's strongest powerlifters who went into bodybuilding do 405 bench with no spotter for 12 reps with a pause on each at the bottom at a bodyweight of just on or over 225.
Watch one of the world's strongest female powerlifters who also went into bodybuilding do 315 for 6 reps with her legs bent and up in the air so her back was totally flat and she could use nothing but chest, arms and shoulders.

This guy at my gym does 405 on flat bench for eight reps.  This after warming up with 225 and 315 respectively.  Next is the incline bench @ 315 for eight.  Same guy does seated 90lb. dumbell curls.  Not world class strength for getbig.com; but, pretty good for a natural who works 9-5.

A few 600lb deadlifts, 500lb bench presses (for a double), 220lb dumbell shrugs, 1,200lb hammer machine shrugs (you can fit 765 on the bar plus two 200lb plus guys standing on each of the supports!), 1,500lb leg presses etc. All done by different guys over the years. Good stuff.

This guy used to go to my gym, maybe 6-6'2" - 260 is what he claimed to weigh (looked to be all upper body, always baggy pants)

He would rep out 365 on the incline bench for several sets. After mid 400's on flat bench for sets. He would then finish with wide gripped chinups and take a leisurely walk around the indoor perimeter track. No flexing or talking shit, just come in and hammer out the same workout twice a week, occasionally would see him doing leg extensions and low rows but not often.  Big as a house up top.

How about the day BDB entered the gym doing backflips, knocked out 350 reps of 900+ lbs upright rows, then exited the gym by backflips.
Are the traps and deltoid caps beefing up man? How about tricep kickbacks what you got on them?

I know this is some redneck shit, but I saw a guy pick up a Dana 60 front end with tires on it, clean and throw it for a bet at a garage when I was in high school.

I didn't have a cherry picker so I picked up the engine out of a diesel rabbit one time.

big fat hoss I used to train with used to do 315 seated overhead for 5+ reps, fullrange of motion and total control - AFTER doing about 20 sets of laterals and DB pressing

guy would pause 405 for reps on the incline like it was a feather. Looked terrible but amazing strength

I started training in 1985.  During my first week in the gym I saw a guy doing very strict/deep/wide arch DB flyes for multiple reps using 125lb dumbells.  That sight is still burned into my brain.  Maybe it's not the most impressive thing, but to me it was a superhuman feat. I'll never forget that.

Damn thats sounds impressive to me only thing you can get hurt on DB flyes if not used in strict form. I train a guy now and he is always hurting his shoulders, I have to always correct his form but by the time I do that damage done.
