Who are your shoulda, coulda, wouldas? From College that didn't bloom in the pros. Mine are Jason Williams from Duke and Bobby Hurley from Duke. Both suffered career ending accidents. Both were suppose the be the next best thing to sliced bread.
Would Jason Williams have been the answer that the Bulls were looking for, a reincarnate of Jordan? Or was he high-po point gaurd version Shaq (shitty on free throws)
And Bobby Hurley, would he have been the Best Ball handler in the NBA?

Obviously, the #1 name on the list (at least for the last quarter-century) would be Len Bias.
Another college great who had no impact in the pros was David Thompson (NC State).

The Bias death was HUGE. I don't think Boston ever recovered.

Coach K has always said that the two best college players he ever saw were Jordan & Bias. The Celtics won three titles in the 80's but think how many they would have had if there was no showtime Lakers & Bias had lived :o.
There have been loads of busts. Pervis Ellison, Kwame Brown, Olowokandi. Plus Derrick Coleman, Glenn Robinson, Danny Manning & Larry Johnson had good careers but nothing compared to what people thought they were going to do.

poor Bo Kimble. he was such a great story after their run in the NCAA's and Hank Gathers death, but he was a total bust in the NBA

Damn, Cocaine OD on 23 :-\. If he was a top player on coke, imagine how he would be with a clear head/body?
I personally know a player who's on coke and his game is really suffering.

I forgot about Bias!!! You're right Tre. Dude was unbelievable, I do think that Jordan and Bias were very similar, both were talented and competitively driven players. And his brother died similarly.

watching Len Bias footage on youtube, he reminds me of a more polished Lebron. he was such a complete player coming out of college, you rarely see that.

For all his faults - this was back when I believed that college ball players were actually supposed to be students - Washburn was a helluva ball player, you're right about that, but he was just too lazy to be a college great, let alone make it in the pros.
He was only at State for 2 years (I remember how pissed I was that he was leaving early), but his off-court issues helped to wreck that program and it still hasn't recovered 20 years later.
I can't help but think that Chris Washburn helped to send Jim Valvano to an early grave.

I was going to say him, but didn't think anyone else would have heard of him. I started watching him when he was at OSU. He, Barry Sanders (football), and Robin Ventura (baseball) all wore 21 on their jerseys at the same time at OSU. After he got kicked out of school, he later turned up at the local school in the place I lived. I was excited to see him play, but he was expelled after stealing beer from a liquor store before classes even started! He just couldn't overcome his demons. What a waste of athleticism and talent!

I think Manute did OK for himself. Injuries didn't help him and he was an offensive liability but man he was a beast on defence at times. I have the game where he nailed 6 threes against Phoenix in 1993. One of the most incredible sights you will ever see. He nails like 5 straight in the 3rd quarter and every single person in the arena is just gobsmacked.

Penny haradaway...After Shaq he went off, then got injured, he dont even play anymore...Remember Kenny Anderson and derrick Coleman in New jersey, Glenn Robinson, the Big flop...i mean the Big Dog... theres a bunch of others like Billy Owens, Kendall Gill that just disappeared.

The Lakers and their fans swear by Luke Walton. But I think he's a scrub and even today, would be one of the last guys picked on most playgrounds.
Mike Dunleavy isn't a franchise player, but I think he'd be the perfect 3rd piece in a system that needs a point forward with a high basketball IQ. I haven't seen him play in a couple of years now, but as I remember, he was the type of player who could help a good team become a championship team, but was NOT the type of player who could help a losing team become a winning team. He can only succeed on a team that's already winning.

I hoped Joe Smith from MD was going to do well. But he was too small and short to be a Cebnter (6'10 and skinny as a rail). He did well playing ACC teams, but not as good in the pros. He didn't want to play on the Left Coast because he was afraid of earthquakes ::).

Awesome player. I'm showing my age, but I remember his death like it was yesterday. His death just ruined the Celtics. Red even unsuccessfully tried to get the NBA to give the Celtics another draft pick.

Luke is a very good basketball player. He is one of the best ball handlers on the team and one of the better passers in the NBA. Great role player.

a friend of mine was a huge glenn robinson fan..he REALLY didn't do a whole lot IMO..
anyone remember God Shammgod? he was this big thing in north carolina i believe then..dropped off the face of the map when he got to the NBA..

He couldn't create for himself off the dribble. Motion, picks were necessary to set up his game. Was a tweener who never fit the half court game of the NBA.

I hated watchin him Grayer, and Hank kill us in the old WCAC. (I attended Pepperdine for college)
