There's a sadomasochistic side to superman.  In almost all of his "epic" fights, he could have easily just flung any of his opponents into the Sun.  But it seems he just likes to fight, get hit and battle.  If his job numero uno is to protect earth and anyone that threatens mankind the why is he so reluctant to even kill a nasty subspecies?  He wants them around.  He loves the attention and brutality.  He's like a beaten wife who sticks with her husband.

I know the story.  Bruce wants to prove a point that he could also beat him but doesn't go as far and plans his own disappearance.
