With the proper drive, focus, and some skill set (as well as an ability to speak), many people can, and have turned their lives around. Starting from the bottom and working their way up to the top of huge corporations without any money, connections, etc...
But for the vast majority who become disgruntled and complacent at their position, that is very correct.
