‘60 Minutes’ Nails Ron DeSantis in Vaccine ‘Pay to Play’ — With Program Allowing the Rich to Fly in for Shots

Last week, an angry Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) snapped at a CBS reporter asking about evidence showing a kind of “pay to play” scandal that favored the wealthy to get COVID-19 vaccinations first.

Community health officials have said that the Florida vaccine roll-out favors the rich over the rest of Florida residents, the report said.

“Florida’s rollout started pretty typically,” the report said. “The first doses were given to healthcare workers and nursing home residents in early December. But then, a few weeks later, Gov. Ron DeSantis, breaking from C.D.C. guidelines, announced he would not vaccinate teachers and essential workers next, but instead put ‘seniors first,’ making anyone 65 or over eligible for the vaccine, the first in the country to do that. DeSantis said seniors were at highest risk.”

West Palm Beach Mayor Keith James was trying to get vaccines for the town’s firefighters, but he later learned that some wealthy board members of a nursing home who were able to be vaccinated.

“Then, the private jets started arriving,” said the report. “Hollywood moguls, New York socialites and tourists from overseas were getting vaccinated in Florida, posting on social media and sparking outrage. Early on, there were no residency requirements to get vaccinated in the state.”

Quote
Transcript of the interaction is featured below (All words appearing in bold were cut out by CBS News):

Sharyn Alfonsi: Publix, as you know, donated $100,000 to your campaign, and then you rewarded them with the exclusive rights to distribute the vaccination in Palm Beach—

Ron DeSantis: So, first of all, that — what you’re saying is wrong. That’s—

Sharyn Alfonsi: How is that not pay-to-play?

Ron DeSantis: —that, that’s a fake narrative. So, first of all, when we did, the first pharmacies that had it were CVS and Walgreens. And they had a long-term care mission. So they were going to the long-term care facilities. They got the vaccine in the middle of December, they started going to the long-term care facilities the third week of December to do LTCs. So that was their mission. That was very important. And we trusted them to do that. As we got into January, we wanted to expand the distribution points. So, yes, you had the counties, you had some drive-through sites, you had hospitals that were doing a lot, but we wanted to get it into communities more. So we reached out to other retail pharmacies — Publix, Walmart — obviously CVS and Walgreens had to finish that mission. And we said, we’re going to use you as soon as you’re done with that. For Publix, they were the first one to raise their hand, say they were ready to go. And you know what, we did it on a trial basis. I had three counties. I actually showed up that weekend and talked to seniors across four different Publix. How was the experience? Is this good? Should you think this is a way to go? And it was 100% positive. So we expanded it, and then folks liked it. And I can tell you, if you look at a place like Palm Beach County, they were kind of struggling at first in terms of the senior numbers. I went, I met with the county mayor. I met with the administrator. I met with all the folks in Palm Beach County, and I said, “Here’s some of the options: we can do more drive-through sites, we can give more to hospitals, we can do the Publix, we can do this.” They calculated that 90% of their seniors live within a mile and a half of a Publix. And they said, “We think that would be the easiest thing for our residents.” So, we did that, and what ended up happening was, you had 65 Publix in Palm Beach. Palm Beach is one of the biggest counties, one of the most elderly counties, we’ve done almost 75% of the seniors in Palm Beach, and the reason is because you have the strong retail footprint. So our way has been multifaceted. It has worked. And we’re also now very much expanding CVS and Walgreens, now that they’ve completed the long term care mission.

Thanks Grape!

It's become apparent to me (although I already knew) that this administration and the media, do not care about uniting anything.

This admin will just do the same things the Trump one did, just with their agenda, and media will not become caring journalists keeping them in check.

The only "normalcy" will be illusion of normalcy, since we won't see 24/7 attacks.

But, as usual, the normal folks like us will have to pick through multiple sources on every story to get a modicum of truth.

this is what bothers about the way things are these days.  Who has the time to sift through all this crap to figure out the truth?  I used to be prideful in the 70's as a child about our "free press" and how it wasn't filled with propaganda like Russia.  but now.....

I had hoped that the lack of journalistic integrity would return, reluctantly accepting the TDS that inflicted the media was entirely real, but thinking it might get right when the administration turned over.

Not seeing it.

There are many behaviors that the Biden admin should be being taken to task on, and they're getting a pass.

My cousin and her husband winter in Florida on their boat. They got there vaccinations there quite awhile back...like months ago. They are both younger than I am and I'm only just getting the vaccine (second one this week). But then, I live in Oregon where Governor Brown decided educators would go ahead of seniors.

Lip service?

https://www.cnn.com/2021/04/05/politics/fact-check-biden-infrastructure-jobs-19-million-buttigieg-deese/index.html

Fact check: Biden administration officials falsely describe infrastructure jobs estimate

Washington (CNN)Top officials in President Joe Biden's administration have made a series of television and radio appearances to promote the infrastructure proposal Biden unveiled last week, a roughly $2 trillion package the White House has named the American Jobs Plan.

But some of these Biden officials have inaccurately described one of the figures they have made central to their sales pitch. And while Biden's Friday description of this same figure was literally accurate, it was still pretty misleading by omission.
The figure in question is an estimate from Moody's Analytics, a Wall Street research firm, of how many jobs the infrastructure proposal will create. White House National Economic Council Director Brian Deese claimed on Fox News on Sunday that Moody's estimated that the proposal "would create 19 million jobs."
Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg used similar language in his own Sunday interviews, saying on ABC that an independent analysis found "this will lead to 19 million jobs" and on NBC that "it's going to create 19 million jobs."
Facts First: Both Deese and Buttigieg falsely described what Moody's said; a White House official conceded to CNN that Deese had misspoken and a Department of Transportation official conceded that Buttigieg had misspoken. It's not true that Moody's estimated that the infrastructure proposal will "create" 19 million jobs. Rather, Moody's estimated that the economy will add about 19 million jobs between the fourth quarter of 2020 and the fourth quarter of 2030 if the infrastructure proposal gets passed -- or add about 16.3 million jobs over the same period if the infrastructure proposal does not get passed. Therefore, the infrastructure proposal itself adds about 2.7 million jobs to the Moody's estimate, not all 19 million.
The White House official said Deese intended to say Moody's found the infrastructure proposal would "help" create 19 million jobs, not that the proposal would itself create 19 million jobs. The Department of Transportation official said the same about Buttigieg.
Moody's estimated that the economy would have added about 15.7 million jobs between the fourth quarter of 2020 and the fourth quarter of 2030 if the American Rescue Plan pandemic relief law had not been approved and if the infrastructure proposal never gets approved. In other words, Moody's said that these two signature Biden plans would be responsible for about 3.3 million jobs above a baseline scenario in which there had been "no additional support" for the economy.
Biden's language
Biden's description of the "19 million" statistic was more correct than the ones offered by Deese and Buttigieg. But Biden's language nonetheless invited listeners to come to an inaccurate understanding of what Moody's concluded.
Biden said in a Friday speech: "Independent analysis shows that if we pass this plan, the economy will create 19 million jobs..."
Unlike Buttigieg and Deese, Biden didn't say the estimate is that infrastructure proposal itself would create 19 million jobs. But the President's artful formulation failed to make clear that Moody's believes that about 16.3 million of these 19 million jobs will be added regardless of whether the infrastructure proposal is signed into law. White House press secretary Jen Psaki also did not make this distinction clear when she deployed the "19 million" figure in a Friday press briefing.
A different White House official, Council of Economic Advisers member Jared Bernstein, used the "19 million" figure much more transparently than his colleagues did. Bernstein proactively explained Friday on CBS News Radio that Moody's said only some of the 19 million estimated additional jobs would be attributable to the infrastructure proposal, while some of the 19 million would be attributable to the American Rescue Plan that Biden signed into law in March and some would be created independently of both plans.
"They report that over the next decade they expect nonfarm payroll jobs...to be up by 19 million. Some of that is the Rescue Plan, some of that's the Jobs Plan, some of that is underlying growth," Bernstein said.
This article has been updated to include comments made by a Department of Transportation official after the article was initially published.

Pretty dishonest hit piece.

Democratic Florida mayor slams 60 Minutes segment criticizing Gov. DeSantis
By Kenneth Garger  April 6, 2021

A Democratic Florida mayor claimed Monday that a “60 Minutes” segment “intentionally” falsified a report that criticized Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis’ vaccine rollout.

The Sunday report suggested that DeSantis favored Publix grocery stores in Palm Beach County for COVID-19 vaccine distribution because the chain had donated to his PAC, Fox News reported.

The segment came under fire when it was revealed a clip of the governor’s response to a question about the grocery chain’s exclusive rights was heavily edited, according to Mediaite.

Palm Beach County Mayor Dave Kerner was one of several state officials to come to the governor’s defense on Monday.

“The reporting was not just based on bad information — it was intentionally false,” Kerner wrote in a statement.

The Democratic mayor of Palm Beach County criticized a report from 60 Minutes.

“They know that the Governor came to Palm Beach County and met with me and the County Administrator and we asked to expand the state’s partnership with Publix to Palm Beach County.”

“We also discussed our own local plans to expand mass vaccinations centers throughout the county, which the Governor has been incredibly supportive.”

A spokesperson for CBS told The Post: “As we always do for clarity, 60 MINUTES used the portion of the Governor’s over 2-minute response that directly addressed the question from the correspondent.”

Handling the pandemic as well or better than any governor in the country.  Refusing to shut down his state and destroy jobs and businesses, while protecting the enormous number of old folks.  Keeping his schools open.  Repeatedly punching the dishonest media in the mouth.  Taking on big tech, etc.
