Calvin's right. Starting pay for NYC cop is around $28K going up to $50K after 5 years. That's why I pointed out Yonkers pay. Because sometimes you can go 5 miles into another district or county and get nearly twice the salary.
Most cops make time and a half overtime or doubletime and put in a ton of OT hours. Why not? For the most part, it's a do-nothing job, just rolling around giving people the pig's eye, hitting on each other's girlfriends, collecting kickbacks, lifting weights, sipping the bottle, and eating doughnuts.

Ed, you should see what the cops in my country have to face in terms of wage.
I live in Brazil. Cops here are in distinct classes: we have those that patrol the streets and go after that thief that is robbing the store. This kinda cop makes up to what would be equivalent to US$500,00....MONTHLY!!!!!!! This is the starting pay!!!!LOL!!!!
Then we have the class of cops that would be on the same level of US detectives. Those guys that investigate crimes, do survailance, set up drug busts, etc....this kind of cop makes up to US$ 1000,00, monthly. The head of each precint, which is called State Delegate starts making up to US$1500,00 , or 1700,00, at the beggining of carrer.
Then we have the equivalent of your FBI guys. Those are the top notch cops in the country, and only investigate federal crimes: money laundering, international drug dealing, etc.....the best salaries lie in there: They start making up to US$ 2500,00 and can end up making US$ 5000,00 monthly, at the end of their career.
So don't tell me those salaries you guys are making a mockery are near poverty line. If the police force in my country had THAT kind of wage, we would have the best police in the whole world, trust me.
