Title: For all the Def Leppard haters on this board
Post by: RocketSwitch625 on December 02, 2012, 05:52:39 AM
Here's proof that when people who are educated about music are interviewed only good things are said about the band Def Leppard.

Seriously, anyone who criticises Def Leppard must be a total wanker. It's true that not many people are educated about music on this forum. You can take your Metallica, Slayer, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Doors etc. and stuff them up your jacksies. This is what real music is all about.

Lol good trolling, but those songs were based on song writing. Learn some fucking music theory before you try having an opinion you dumb girl.

Def Leopard, is a band based on superficialness. That is why your never gonna hear a reputable band covering def leopard, and why all those other bands you have mentioned have been covered countless times since they were first written.

They sold alot of albums because they had insane production values, and look good on stage. They are basically a boy band.

You are right. Radioheads measly 30million + albums worldwide compared to Leppard's humongous 100million + albums worldwide. There really is no comparison. Leppard's music isn't depressing either like those posh boy alternative rock bands.

Here's a clip of me showing my appreciation for Leppard captured on their recent live album entitled "Mirror Ball - Live & More". My loud appreciation was also used at the end of a live track recorded by Joe Elliott's Down 'n' Outz.

Well, let's see. Santana covered the song Photograph, Mariah Carey covered Bringin' On The Heartbreak, Lionel Richie recorded his version of Long Long Way To Go a year after Leppard recorded it, Tom Cruise recently covered Pour Some Sugar On Me for the movie Rock Of Ages also named after a Leppard song, Emm Gryner also covered Pour Some Sugar On Me, Lady Gaga recently named Leppard as one of her biggest influences and the main influence on her next album and Taylor Swift did the Crossroads show with Leppard where she performed a number of their hits. There have also been a number of Leppard tribute albums released over the years. The band is far more popular than you think.

That is true. Alot of times you don't really notice how popular or great a band was until you see how many times their songs were covered. That is a pretty impressive resume.

I'm not a fan of Lady Gaga at all but you don't consider her a real musician? I know next to nothing about music but I always thought she was a pretty good piano player.  And how about Taylor Swift as a songwriter in relation to her core audience? Wasn't she writing successful hits in high school?

What an honour.

The movie bombed.

Sure, the movie could have done better, but it was still something like the 6th most successful musical ever or it had the 6th biggest opening weekend of any musical in history. Initially the band wanted nothing to do with the project after turning down an offer when the Broadway musical was launched. They really had no choice but to get involved after Tom Cruise (a fellow fan) and the producers begged them to let some of their music be featured in the movie. How many bands would say no to that considering the name of the movie was one of their songs? Who gives a shit if it bombed? I haven't even watched it yet.

MOR band. Nothing seminal, nothing too terrible that a shitload of over production couldn't fix. They hit it big in the '80s - a good decade for a band like this.

I see "cockswitch" is ignoring the fact that these guys were a bunch of hacks assembled by superproducer "mutt" lange with the sole purpose of creating a metal-lite band with pop appeal.

He co-wrote (which means he wrote them)  and produced every single song on Pyromania and hysteria, their two big albums.

They are basically a live cover band that plays songs someone else came up with.

Creep by radiohead standards is just a pop song. Listen to the trickster, paranoid andriod etc.

They use chord tones, and writing techniques that were considered the absolute fringe when they started out.

Nowadays these strange chord tones are considered standard and normal.

A few Def Leppard album reviews/quotes from the past decade:

"X" (2002)

Melodicrock.com:

"Their best album since Hysteria. In fact, I have little doubt that the overall fan reaction will rank the album in a similar fashion.
With the right promotion and strong radio chances for several songs, there is no reason why we won't be hearing a whole lot of Leppard over the coming months.
A special mention goes to the producers of this album. This extra time and effort with effects and layers has been well spent. Each listen reveals something new in the mix and will ensure that the lifespan of this album is a decent one.
The more tastefully implemented modern sound will allow the band to compete with today's Top 40 acts, without alienating any old fans".

NME.com:

"Def Leppard improve with age: they lost their guitarist through drugs, their drummer had his arm amputated and, even though they're all in their 40s, they've just made the best rock album since Andrew Wk's'I Get Wet'".

Blogcritics.com:

"It is great to see the band back to what they do best, well-crafted arena rock, instead of trying to be trendy. This marks a welcome return of the Def Leppard we grew up with back in the day. You better get your gig tickets now, because I predict worldwide sellouts. This is clearly a candidate for hard rock album of the year, absolutely stunningly good"!

Songs From The Sparkle Lounge (2008)

A quote from Behind The Music Remastered:

"Sparkle Lounge is if anything as classic a Leppard album as you could possibly get".

Geoff Barton, founder of Kerrang! heavy metal magazine.

Classic Rock Magazine:

"Def Leppard’s ninth studio album is also their last for the Mercury label. It’s a supremely satisfying send-off, marking the band’s most varied and satisfying collection of songs since Hysteria. What a way to go".

Review from AntiMusic.com:

"Def Leppard has constructed an album that generates groundswells of sound of a band not just in perfect harmony, but unison as well. Songs From The Sparkle Lounge does not find the band veering too far into the past and not aiming for future glories, instead it finds them perfectly in the here and now".

Review from UnRated Magazine.com:

"Even if you haven't been a huge Def Leppard fan in the past, Songs from the Sparkle Lounge is a solid, enjoyable rocker all on its own merits. There simply isn't one bad song within this entire collection of songs".

About.com: Classic Rock:

""Gotta let it go! Gotta let it go!," shouts Joe Elliott. Gotta let what go, Joe? The album, perhaps, to share with others, because he knows it's so good you won't want to stop playing it? He's right! This really is a great album to get Def Leppard back in everyone's focus, and they certainly have got mine!"

411mania.com:

"On this release, they’ve rediscovered Def Leppard. And while the riffs aren’t as heavy and abundant as the good ol’ days, there are enough things going in the right direction, like the fun “Nine Lives” and the adrenaline fueled “Bad Actress”, that fans will perk up their ears. If you’re a fan, this is a record you’ve been waiting on for quite possibly ten years".

Hardrockhideout.com:

"Songs From the Sparkle Lounge isn’t a terribly long affair. It clocks in just shy of 40 minutes. This isn’t Def Leppard’s best work, but it is far from their worst. Will this new album be enough to garner new success for Def Leppard? It just might. I had low expectations for this record, and as a result I enjoyed it. I think most of you will too".

artistdirect.com:

"For the first time in a long time, Def Leppard have found the perfect balance between the histrionics of their hard rock roots and the pop accessibility that has made them such a favorite with mainstream America. They still deliver feel-good music, but they make it feel just as good when it hits hard. That's the one-two punch that makes songs from The Sparkle Lounge shine the brightest".

Tower.com (Tower Records):

“Songs from the Sparkle Lounge” could be considered one of their most complete and perhaps one of the most diverse albums in Def Leppard’s 30-year recording career".

Joe Elliott, Brit Sound Radio interview:

"At this moment in my life in October 2009 my two favourite records that we've ever made are our latest which is 'Songs From The Sparkle Lounge' and the covers album 'YEAH!' which came out in 2006".

It does seem like she takes otherwise pretty good written songs and tricks them out way too much. I prefer just listening to her with the piano but I suppose that wouldn't sell as many records and of course the all mighty dollar tends to win out most times.

All I know is the band announced back in May that their previous record sales tally of 65million + albums worldwide had increased to 100million +. I first read it on Wikipedia and then I heard it from the band members themselves during an American radio interview. They must have had their albums re-certified which hadn't been done since the mid 90s to my knowledge.

If Radiohead give their music away for nothing then prove it. Post a link on here so I can go to a site owned by the band that is offering all their albums for nothing. Maybe one album or a single is available for free download but I doubt very much that their entire back catalogue is. If that is the case then they are the true imbeciles in music not Def Leppard.

and yes, Radiohead put their last two albums up for download, pay your own price... instead of releasing them.

They also taped live, in studio performances of both albums in their entirety, and put them on Youtube.

it was huge news in the industry, and in serious music circles.. so of course you didn't hear about it  :D

dismissing one type of music in a pompous and slightly arrogant tone speaks of narrow mindedness

there is a place for all good music

def leppard are good song writers, singers and great musicians

dont like them by all means but dont dismiss them because you would rather listen to radioheadd wanking off like a bunch of pretentious cu nts

That's where you are wrong, totally wrong. The two guitarist in Def Leppard are what you call real musicians. Vivian Campbell has played on some of the most classic hard rock/metal albums of all time and Phil Collen is considered to be one of the greatest guitarists ever in rock. Could the guitarists in Radiohead play guitar solos like the two in Def Leppard? I doubt it very much. In fact I know for a fact they couldn't.

Regarding Def Leppard fans you are wrong on that too. I have been to many of their shows since the mid 90s and their audiences are made up of people of all ages both male and female and from all walks of life. Proof that you know nothing about genuine rock bands like Def Leppard.

joe elliots hoarse sounding scratchy voice has lost its appeal with age,,that was trademark sound with the backround vocals blended that sound they had is not there,,,

yeah those harmonies are so unique to def leppard.   i fig'd they auto-tune them up a half-step to make up for the age.  unless they already did :(

According to who?

Not according to any musicians.

Collins is NEVER mentioned when speaking of great guitar players.

Viv was considered one of the up and comers back in the day - until he joined Def Leppard and then he was written off.

Don't even get me started on Radiocrap being a 'musicians band'. Seriously, what a fucking insult. They can barely fucking play their instruments.

It's not about their ability to fucking wank, it's about their ability to make interesting music, that one can get something out of. I don't give a shit if your like them or not but they as a group is worth respecting,.

All that wanker crap you get on with is total garbage. Of course their fucking talented but aside from that point their totally uninteresting.

You seem to only like guitarists that play fast 24/7. I like a bit of that too but not all the time. Yngwie has never nailed a solo as good as this in his life. Phil Collen is famous for picking every note. This song also rocks more than anything Yngwie has recorded:

Don't even bother the dude worships total wankers. Guys with no talent and have only technical abilities.

He's trying to turn this into an argument of one extreme over the other.

Either it's all techinical ability over popularity. There is a fucking middle ground and radiohead are on it.

Obviously the guys can play their fucking songs, this is something that obviously should be taken for granted.

Ability to play music isn't the question it is their ability to write and make interesting songs, with something more than just filler.

radiohead makes dismal, quirky original music that a lot of people (who hate radio cheese) enjoy.  Not incredible musicians, but not bad.

Def leppard guitarist was average by any era - but it's about writing good songs, and he did that.  There were guys who played 100x better, way more skill, sitting in their trailers still playing for free.

there's always going to be a better guitarist out there.  Satriani, I was listening to his new wormhole cd last night, it's not technically unreal or impossible, it's just easy listening guitar instrumental that's more catchy and memorable than technical.

Never thought I'd see the day when we have a three-page argument on Getbig about Def Leppard of all bands.

For the record, I like them - Pyromania, Hysteria, and Adrenalize were awesome albums IMO (especially Hysteria) but anything after Retroactive has been poor. They come across now as desperate old men trying to look cool.

Radiohead are miserable as hell - have never bought any of their stuff.

Radiohead is only universally regarded as one of the most critically acclaimed, innovative bands of the last 20 years.

but i guess "kerrang" magazine doesn't give them good reviews because there aren't 10 minutes of masturbating solos on every song

First off I play bass and I'd be first to tell you that the bass on radiohead albums isn't worth mentioning in terms of skill it's the ways in which it slides in their.

My point wasn't that their skilled musicians, my point is they way they wrote songs was truly interesting, and their influence will be counted in the decades or centuries, not years.

Def leopard wrote great pop songs, sounded great live and on the albums, were skilled musicians, sing like a choirs etc, however they will not be remembered, they will not influence anywhere near the magnitude of musicians that pinkfloyd or radiohead will.

Their timeless, and I can gaurentee you their music will be transposed, distorted and contorted a thousand and one ways in the future.

Define "incredible musician".

for me it isn't who plays the fastest. it's who creates great music. I'm not a musician but their music doesn't sound "simple" to me at all, and the bass player is Ill.

switch the names around in your post and it will begin to make sense, you seriously don't know what the fuck you are talking about.

Radiohead put down the guitars for an entire album..KID A, and explored electronic music.

turned out pretty well, Kid A was voted by Rolling Stone the best album of the decade in 2010. ;)

keep in mind Kid A was released in 2001, so it wasn't even the "hot record" at the time.

I've never really heard Radiohead's music except for the occasional song on the radio at work. Now that I've listened to a bit more of it on Youtube I can't believe how shit they really are. To me their music sounds like something a 3-year-old could write. Where are the melodies, the vocal harmonies and memorable guitar solos? To you and millions of others they might be great but in reality they lack way too many things to be fairly compared to bands that truly are talented like Def Leppard, Queen or Judas Priest.

At this point your just straight up trolling.

Radiohead has atleast 15 riffs that are totally burnt /strange /out of key etc, that are worth studying as an independent style of music.

Def leoppard from what I know play the most predictable cliched stuff in existence, granted well written but nothing worth mimicking.

they are "One Direction" with long hair and guitars.

when something is so shitty and obviously crafted to move units, i just can't like it

Music to me is some dude being inspired and writing a song, putting it down, and then the band fleshes it out and makes it into a full on song.

take "like suicide" by Soundgarden..Chris Cornell was in his house, and he heard a "THUMP" on his front door, went outside and a Bluejay had smashed into his front glass and was laying there... dying, so he crushed it's head with a brick, went upstairs and wrote the song. and the song rules

These empty headed hacks go into the studio and the producer hands out the lyrics and music parts and tells them exactly how he wants it all to sound, down to the note. then he spends months by himself making it into HIS vision, these dickheads have no real input.

there aren't even real drums on a def leppard record, they used drum machines..100%.. even before that guy lost his arm

You have no fucking idea what you are talking about. If you watched the "Classic Albums: Hysteria" documentary from around 10 years ago you would need to be put on suicide watch for owning yourself into oblivion with your last post. It's currently available to watch on YouTube. I dare you to watch it. They had so much input into the making of the album and it took over 3 years to record. And since parting company with Mutt Lange they have been producing or co-producing all their own material. Just about all the guys in Def Leppard have written or produced music for other artists and recorded stuff with other artists too. They are highly respected in the rock world. Also, Joe Elliott has had his own recording studio for well over 20 years and it's been used by several well-known artists including former members of Thin Lizzy, Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones, Hothouse Flowers, Ricky Warwick and late guitar legend Mick Ronson. Regarding Rick Allen's drum sound, he has been using an acoustic kit on and off since 1995. The Slang album was all acoustic drums and since the recording of that album they have tried to stick to using real drums as much as possible. Anyway, you are a sad wanker who knows nothing about real music. It could be the bodybuilding drugs have gone to your head. But I think you must be on something else or like a lot of other shit ones on here you are suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder. 'Nuff said!

This site proves how hugely overrated Radiohead is according to the general public. 46% says yes:

http://overrated-underrated.com/music/radiohead/ (http://overrated-underrated.com/music/radiohead/)

Just one of the comments from the site:

"Insanely over rated. I have tried seeing them live twice and walked out from both shows out of boredom and anger that I paid to see them. The worst was that they headlined Bonnaroo this year and I left after the first 20 minutes because all of the songs sounded exactly the same to me. The worst part of the experience was that for the rest of the weekend I had to hear about how incredible everyone thought they were and get offended when I said I thought they were boring. One of the most over rated bands of all time".

so then i guess you know that Jim Steinman, the guy who writes and produces all of Meatloaf's  stuff...was brought in after the first producer bailed.

I quote Joe Elliot ...."he WROTE the entire album."

They didn't like the direction he wanted them to go, a more raw sound..so they fired him.

so then they tried to produce it themselves with the help of engineer Nigel Green, failed, and scrapped the entire sessions..... and in the end begged Mutt Lange to come back polish up Steinmans songs and produce it. that's why it took 4 years for the fucking record to come out.

you really think they are going to tell you that on a "documentary" that they produced? LOLOLOL.

Def Leppard are a producer's band, it's a simple fact.

their drummer has one arm

radiohead are a bunch of pretentious idiots that wrote one good song

then wanked off for ten years pretending they are deep and meaningful

which band would you rather be in

a big rock group fucking hot whores by the dozen

or radiohead where your fans are all vegetarians and would rather self harm than take it in the ass
Lol what song is that karma police?

Seriously shitting on writing head is fucking ignorant.

They were truly interesting, whether or not you like them.

LOL...i think there might be a few bands that have a problem with that statement, Led Zeppeilin, Black Sabbath for starters.

I get it, and you are a pretty persistent troll, I'll give you that   :)

oh by the way...post "Adrenalize" how many records did Def Leppard's new albums sell ?

would you like to know the answer ?  :D

I'm still waiting to see Radiohead have a movie made about their career. That would never happen and there's only two things that Groink can do about that and that's like it or lump it!

I probably have more diverse tastes than most here. Anything save for radio-play tripe and shit hop, which doesn't actually meet the definition of music anyway, is on my musical palette.

Talent has nothing to do with playing a million notes per hour. Collen is a pure example of playing fast for the sake of playing fast, and playing sloppy as hell while he's at it. He's a hack.

He wishes he could write/play this.

Now if radiocrap had any talent they'd probably sound a little like this. More dynamics, better vocals, more sophisticated arrangements and more intelligent melodies and note choices.

The reason y'all probably haven't heard any bands like this is because the general public is full of pablum sucking morons and they dictate what you get to listen to, along with big $$$. There's a million other bands and musicians I could reference but it's pretty pointless.

I'd like to hear of bands that have a direct def leopard influence, guess wha your not gonna find em.

Radiohead influence almost every band going these days, they were essentially the second wave of music after nirvana.

Your delusional, as much as labels dictate taste, the fact is people like what they like, there is no great conspiracy, people that play guitar like  mal-steam, people that don't can't stand em, just the same dudes that play bass like victor wooten, there is no conspiracy but simply an individualistic bias for what is relevant to you.

The reason radiohead is worth mentioning  is because they give something to more than one audience of people. They give people that play instruments some interesting ideas, just as they give people  that don't something they won't get out of  coldplay.

Def leopard give almost nothing to the musician, and I seriously have to wonder do they even like playing their own songs. Their a pop band produced by mutt lange, who look gook, and sing like a boy band.

I saw Devin Townsend when he was with Vai.  Awesome show in a small club.  Although I like Devin's stuff his music can be a little over produced at times.

I hear a lot of tricky time changes and complex melodies, but i don't hear anything i would want to hear again or resonates with me.

vocals are horribly overwrought. i can't deal with those operatic types.

it's not about who has the most dexterity in my opinion. if that was the case, if someone could play a solo with their feet, would that make them the best musician ?

and it's just silly to say Radiohead can barely play their instruments just because their aren't chugging guitars and sweeps, hammering on and all of that guitar god stuff. their lead guitarist scores orchestras and movie soundtracks, and real ones..not silly vanity projects

such simple music  ::)

Def Leppard is for skanks.

I wouldn't even consider myself a 'hater'.

It's not even on my radar for something important enough to justify hate.

HTH.

I'm kinda on the same wavelength, however it's hard to get past a bunch of  grown men admitting to listening to them. They were truly the backstreet boys of their time, where 2/3rds their audience was chicks, and the 1/3 men that liked them as a guilty pleasure somehow because their retro thats excused.

P.S. Every Def Leppard gig I've been to in my country (UK) the audiences have been 50% male and 50% female.

Iron Maiden could be considered one of the all-time greats if you are a fan of metal that is. Unlike Def Leppard they were a true part of the "new wave of British heavy metal" movement of the late 70s. Only some of their music appeals to me though. They lack variation in my view, same with AC/DC.

Something people always forget about Def Leppard is they've had very few line-up changes in the 35 years that they've been together. They had a couple of line-up changes early on in their career, but no line-up changes at all since Campbell joined in 1992. How many bands can stay together longer than 5 years these days? I say the X Factor is to blame for it for producing short lived-crap every single year. Simon Bowell ought to be shot.

What the critics say. Some quotes from the Pyromania (Deluxe Edition) webisode:

On the album:

“The true measure of the success of Pyromania is that it was selling a hundred thousand copies a week in America alone. Truly mind boggling when you think about how many albums that really is”.

Paul Elliott ‘Mojo, Classic Rock, Q’

“The production was state of the art and it actually set the tone for what was to happen throughout the 80s. I think the album was the blueprint for so much especially in America in terms of how important production was”.

Malcolm Dome ‘Total Rock’

On the band:

“I said once that if there was any band or any rock band that deserves to be known as heroes it’s Def Leppard”.

Paul Elliott ‘Mojo, Classic Rock, Q’

"Without Def Leppard I think British music and global music in rock terms would be so much poorer”.

Malcolm Dome ‘Total Rock’

Groink and RAtard can stick the above comments in their pipes and smoke them.
