It certainly will take a long time. CENTCOM's touting the introduction of honey bees to help farmers now. Small but important steps for a stable future.
In the meantime though, I believe getting Afghanistan's government to stand on it's own is the real issue. According to Petraeus, "Indeed, insurgent successes correlate directly to the Afghan people’s growing disenchantment with their government due to its incapacity to serve the population and due to their doubts regarding the competence and honesty of public officials.". That type of disenchantment doesn't help when dealing with the tribes flipping sides from one day to the next.
The new AAB's deploying this fall may help with these problems, but that remains to be seen.
I agree Barry's base will be pissed as all hell. And I'm sure the Dems will make a huge issue of it in the media, but, in the end, if Barry wants the surge, I think he'll get it. He's still pretty early in his presidency and reelection is still a few years away.
I think more troops bothers me, not just from Russia's historical experience, but also the fact that one bad apple can really cause a public relations nightmare. Even if it's just one or two soldiers that cause a problem, it can easily be magnified, especially in the Muslim press. That just causes additional set backs.
I'll check out "The Bear went over the Mountain" next time I'm at B&N.
