First, it's pretty much Army regulations to have one's dress uniform accurately display rank, patches and ribbons. Kind of like you have to wear your hat and name tag at McDonald's.
Second, the dress uniform is essentially the soldier's resume. It shows name, rank, branch, combat, qualifications, achievements, etc. It's not for bragging. It's simply a factual account of one's career.
