Donald Trump is facing two indictments, with the potential for more. Political wisdom may have once suggested the former president’s bid for a second White House term would be nothing but a pipe dream. But most of us know better by now.
Trump is not only in a historically strong position for a nonincumbent to win the Republican nomination, but he is in a better position to win the general election than at any point during the 2020 cycle and almost at any point during the 2016 cycle.
No one in Trump’s current polling position in the modern era has lost an open presidential primary that didn’t feature an incumbent. He’s pulling in more than 50% of support in the national primary polls, i.e., more than all his competitors combined.
Three prior candidates in open primaries were pulling in more than half the vote in primary surveys in the second half of the calendar year before the election: Democrat Al Gore and Republican George W. Bush in 2000 and Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016. Gore remains the only nonincumbent to win every single presidential nominating contest, while Bush and Clinton never lost their national polling advantage in their primaries.

Why Trump's second indictment may not sink him in 2024
Today, Trump’s closest primary competitor, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, has fallen below 20% nationally. No other contender is at or above 10%. This makes the margin between Trump and the rest of the field north of 30 points on average.
A look back at past polls does show candidates coming back from deficits greater than 10 points to win the nomination, but none greater than 30 points at this point. In fact, the biggest comebacks when you average all the polls in the second half of the year before the election top out at about 20 points (Democrats George McGovern in 1972, Jimmy Carter in 1976 and Barack Obama in 2008).
Obama did fall nearly 30 points behind for a brief period in the fall of 2007, though his comeback the following year and that of Republican John McCain (another eventual nominee who trailed by over 10 points nationally) points to another reason why Trump is so strong right now.
Trump is leading not just nationally but in the early-voting states as well. He’s up by double digits in Iowa, New Hampshire and South Carolina.
Obama was within single digits of Clinton and Iowa poll leader John Edwards at this point in the 2008 cycle. Similarly, Clinton’s edge was in the single digits over Obama in South Carolina at this stage of the campaign.
On the Republican side in 2008, the primary deck was much more unsettled than the national numbers indicated at this point. Rudy Giuliani was up nationally, but he lagged behind Mitt Romney in Iowa and New Hampshire. Romney couldn’t get much above 30% in either state, unlike Trump right now.
McCain (whose candidacy is often held up as an example of how DeSantis might come back) was always considerably closer to the national and state front-runners than anyone is to Trump at this moment.
Of course, winning the primary is one thing for Trump, who has led in almost every single Republican primary poll published in the past eight years.
What should arguably be more amazing is that despite most Americans agreeing that Trump’s two indictments thus far were warranted, he remains competitive in a potential rematch with President Joe Biden. A poll out last week from Marquette University Law School had Biden and Trump tied percentage-wise (with a statistically insignificant few more respondents choosing Trump).
The Marquette poll is one of a number of surveys showing Trump either tied or ahead of Biden. The ABC News/Washington Post poll has published three surveys of the matchup between the two, and Trump has come out ahead – albeit within the margin of error – every time. Other pollsters have shown Biden only narrowly ahead.

Biden vs. Trump: The 2024 race a historic number of Americans don't want
To put that in perspective, Trump never led in a single national poll that met CNN’s standards for publication for the entirety of the 2020 campaign. Biden was up by high single digits in the late summer of 2019. Biden is up by maybe a point in the average of all 2024 polls today.
Surveys in the late summer of 2015 told the same story: Clinton was up by double digits over Trump in late July and up by mid-to-high single digits by the end of August 2015.
The fact that the polling between Biden and Trump is so close shouldn’t be much of a surprise. Elections are a choice between two candidates. Trump isn’t popular, but neither is Biden. The two, in tandem, would be the most disliked presidential nominees in polling history, if their numbers hold through the election.
All that being said, the 2024 election will probably come down to a few swing states. Polling in swing states has been limited because we’re still over a year from the election.
One giant warning sign for Democrats was a late June Quinnipiac University poll from Pennsylvania, a pivotal state for the past few election cycles where Trump rallied base supporters in Erie on Saturday. The state barely voted for Trump in 2016 and for Biden in 2020.
Trump was up on Biden by 1 point in the Quinnipiac poll – a result within the margin of error, but nevertheless a remarkable achievement for the former president.
Why? It was only the second Pennsylvania poll that met CNN standards for publication since 2015 that had Trump ahead of either Biden (for 2020 and 2024) or Clinton (for 2016).
The good news for Democrats is that general election polling, unlike primary polling, is not predictive at this point. Things can most certainly change.
But for now, the chance that Trump is president in less than two years time is a very real possibility.

The So Help Me Golf author appeared on Deadline White House with Nicolle Wallace to share firsthand observations from when he's golfed with Trump.
“I’ve always said golf is like bicycle shorts. It reveals a lot about a guy,” Reilly joked during his appearance. “And what it reveals about this guy is that he cannot lose. He has to win and he will do anything to cheat.”
"And I know because I played golf with him and he took seven mulligans. He took a 'give me chip-in.' I’ve never even heard of a 'give me chip-in,'" he added.
Reilly claimed during the segment that he has seen Trump win tournaments even though he wasn’t “in the state when the tournament’s played,” and he also won a tournament in North Korea when he was talking to leader Kim Jong Un. Reilly claimed he also witnessed this happen during a two-day tournament this year.
“What he does [is] he just calls in and goes, ‘I usually beat that guy, give me the trophy,’” Reilly alleged.
“And I know this because when I play with him, he goes, ‘You know what I do to win these championships, don’t ya?’ and I go, ‘Please tell me. Give it to me.’ And he goes, ‘Anytime I buy a new course, I play the first round all by myself and then I declare myself the club champion,’” Reilly continued. “So that’s what kind of guy this is.”
Reilly went on to claim that Trump has “never won a championship at a course he doesn’t own and operate” despite claiming that he's won 23. The author said Trump has played at stricter courses like Pebble Beach and Lake Tahoe and has never been in “the top half.”
“Can you just talk about how outside the ethos of the sport it is to cheat so audaciously?” Wallace asked.
“Well, I don’t know anything about politics, but I know about golf,” he replied. “I’ve covered it for about 45 years. It’s not a sport where you can cheat. It's just not in the game.”

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) doubled down on her claim that Friday’s New York-New Jersey earthquake was a “sign from God” to “repent.”
Earlier this week, a 4.8 magnitude rocked the tri-state area with the shaking of homes and commercial buildings. The epicenter of the earthquake was in New Jersey, just a few miles away from former President Donald Trump’s National Golf Club.
In the immediate aftermath of the event, the Georgia lawmaker sent out a tweet claiming that God had sent the earthquake has a “sign” for the United State to “repent.” She also claimed the eclipse was another sign from God that the country needs to ask for forgiveness.
“God is sending America strong signs to tell us to repent. Earthquakes and eclipses and many more things to come. I pray that our country listens,” Greene wrote X, formerly known as Twitter, on Friday.
Greene’s post received a community appearing under her original post that read, “Monday’s eclipse was predicted hundreds of years ago, it will not have been caused by contemporary actions.”
She added onto her statement in a Sunday message to followers on X, citing biblical passages to back up her claims of divine intervention.
“Many have mocked and scoffed at this post and even put community notes,” Greene continued. Jesus talked about that in Luke 12:54-56.”
“Yes eclipses are predictable and earthquakes happen and we know when comets are passing by, however God created all of these things and uses them to be signs for those of us who believe,” she concluded.

Instead, he yelled at the American people for over an hour in a speech filled with America-last rhetoric for his liberal base, in what was clearly a de facto kickoff speech for his campaign.
President Biden led off his address with a call to borrow and send tens of billions more taxpayer dollars to Ukraine. This tone-deaf approach of prioritizing people thousands of miles across the ocean ignores the top two concerns on the American people’s minds — inflation and illegal immigration.
In fact, it took President Biden more than 40 minutes to address the crisis on our border and the resulting deadly crime and drug addictions associated with it. When we did finally hear about Laken Riley, the president seemed to confuse her with a college football coach. Sadly, this brutal murder was a completely preventable crime committed by another illegal immigrant. Just last week, we learned that a 14-year-old girl in my district was sexually assaulted by a 32-year-old illegal immigrant released into the country last fall by the Biden administration. The cable pundits on MSNBC may not think border crime has reached Virginia, but this is not the first case, and it will not be the last.
President Biden wants Americans to forget that when he took office, the border was more secure than at any time in recent history. By intentionally reversing President Trump’s border policies, President Biden invited 10 million illegal immigrants into our country. Now his strategy is to deflect and distract from his willful culpability for the crisis he created, by somehow claiming that he doesn’t have the authority to reverse his executive actions. He is calling on Congress to act, but the Republican House majority has acted by passing H.R. 2 nearly a year ago, the strongest genuine border security bill in history.
President Biden should acknowledge his failures, reverse course, use his authority to reinstate the Trump administration policies that were working and demand that the Democratic-controlled Senate pass H.R. 2 and send it to his desk for his signature.
In the meantime, one of the few groups doing well in the Biden economy is the Mexican crime cartels, which are profiting to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars each year from drugs and human trafficking. But for regular Americans, inflation has skyrocketed by 18 percent since Biden took office. The average American family is paying about $1,000 more per month for the essentials than they were paying before Biden took office. President Biden may not have to go to the grocery store, pay rent, pay utility bills or put gas in his car, but the people in the 5th District of Virginia do, and they are feeling the pain of Bidenomics. And no, mandating expensive and impractical electric vehicles to solve supposed climate change is not going to make their lives better.
In 2020, President Biden promised the American people an administration based on competence, decency and unity. Biden cannot run on that message in 2024. He botched the Afghanistan withdrawal, created the disaster at the border, passed an Inflation Reduction Act he later admitted did nothing to reduce inflation, put an emphasis on racially divisive “diversity, equity and inclusion” (DEI) across the federal government, undermined the military for woke purposes, called for radical abortion on demand policies, defended men in girls’ sports, supported transgender surgeries at taxpayer expense, undermined Second Amendment rights, attempted to use the legal system to destroy his political rival and used the Justice Department to target parents and people of faith.
When combined with evidence the Biden family traded on his name to enrich themselves and a special counsel report raising questions about his cognitive abilities, should we be surprised the president has doubled down to appeal to his base in a desperate effort to win reelection?
As expected, President Biden took no ownership for his failures as the leader of our nation during the State of the Union address. Instead, he tried to create a villain to blame it on —MAGA Republicans. Yet, as Biden stood there giving what will hopefully be his final State of the Union address, he did not fool anyone. The facts point to who is failing the American people — it is Joe Biden.
