Biden's Epic Collapse Has Democrats Desperately Looking to Hillary Clinton for Salvation
Twon Hall ^ | 12 Jan 2022 | Matt Vespa
Posted on 1/13/2022, 8:50:58 AM by Rummyfan

Deep down, Democrats know they're in the suck. Joe Biden is simply incapable of leading this country. He can't govern this country. He is anemic in every aspect of this job…when he remembers that he's president. We still have supply chain issues. Inflation spiked to seven percent in December, the highest since 1982. The border is out of control. And the man has done next to nothing legislatively, always going for these left-wing pipe dream bills that cannot be passed with a four-seat majority in the House and the 50-50 Senate. Instead of working out a compromise, Democrats want to nuke the filibuster, wasting more time. It's the white flag. It's the game of appearing like you're doing something while knowing deep down, nothing will get done.

Moderate Democrats now must stack sandbags as they decided to roll the dice with Nancy Pelosi and sign on to join this Bolshevik legislative circus. Now, they must defend why they voted for a hyper-left-wing bill that's not popular. Progressives were promised that Biden could deliver a necessary vote from Joe Manchin. He didn't. Manchin declared his opposition and killed Build Back Better. Both sides have ample reason to distrust the Biden White House. They can't get stuff done, not even coming through for one Democratic vote in the Senate. The 2022 midterm season is in full bloom. Defensive fortifications are massing, which means no big moves on the Hill.

Politico: Dems beg Biden for a COVID strategy "reset"
Hot Air ^ | 12 Jan 2022 | Ed Morrisey
Posted on 1/13/2022, 12:28:39 PM by Rummyfan

Perhaps it would be more accurate to state that Democrats looking at a midterm abyss want an actual, coherent strategy from Joe Biden on COVID-19. Politico reports that grumbling has grown so loud from Biden’s allies on Capitol Hill that a few of them are willing to state on the record that whatever Biden’s doing on the pandemic isn’t working — medically or politically.

The problem is that Biden’s continually playing checkers in a three-dimensional chess world, and it shows:

Record hospitalizations. A nationwide scramble for tests. Entire school districts forced to shutter.

As a brutal surge of Omicron infections hits an exhausted nation, a growing number of Democrats are urging the Biden White House to reset its Covid battle plan to prevent what they fear could mushroom into a crisis of trust in public health authorities as cases spike in virtually every state.

Democrats acknowledge that the latest Covid-19 variant is the most vexing to date, with plenty still unknown about its severity and resistance to treatments. But many are warning that some messaging from agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is fueling more confusion, and the government needs to evolve in its response to keep up with a dramatically changing virus.

Biden won’t take questions, launches new mask push 2 years into COVID
Nypost ^ | 01/13/2022 | Steven Nelson

White House reporters peppered President Biden with questions about COVID-19 on Thursday after he announced a new push for people to wear face masks nearly two years into the pandemic — but Biden chose not to answer any of them.

In scripted remarks from the White House-adjacent Eisenhower Executive Office Building, the president — who spoke with his back to the press pool — announced a plan to distribute free high-quality masks, the wearing of which he said would be a “patriotic duty” for Americans in response to record-high numbers of COVID cases caused by the Omicron variant.

Biden's Big Elections Lie
Townhall.com ^ | January 14, 2022 | David Harsanyi
Posted on 1/14/2022, 7:40:03 AM by Kaslin

resident Joe Biden finally delivered his "voting rights" speech in Atlanta, telling a crowd:

"The next few days, when these bills come to a vote, will mark a turning point in this nation's history. Will we choose democracy over autocracy, light over shadows, justice over injustice? I know where I stand. I will not yield. I will not flinch. I will defend your right to vote, our democracy against all enemies foreign and domestic. And the question is: Where will the institution of the United States Senate stand?"

These were little more than the mendacious ravings of a demagogue.

Biden's argument is predicated on the idea that anyone who continues to support the legislative filibuster -- a Senate rule the president defended for nearly 50 years -- or voter ID laws, or time restrictions on mail-in ballots, or consistent hours for early voting, or bans on ballot harvesting, is no better than Bull Connor. "Do you want to be on the side of Dr. King or George Wallace?" was the false choice offered by a man who repeatedly praised Wallace, and other segregationists, early in his career.

The president suggested that anyone opposing the Democrats' voting rights bill was not only a bigot but a seditious "domestic" enemy of the United States -- a designation that now probably includes six Democratic senators, if not more. The president pronounced the Senate a "shell of its former self," lamenting that the GOP had used the filibuster over 100 times in the past year, skipping the inconvenient fact that Democrats had done so over 300 times the preceding four years. Biden, "the institutionalist," then unloaded a litany of completely misleading contentions about voting laws to justify his abandonment of principle.

And the reason Biden is compelled to lie about virtually every aspect of the Georgia voting law is that the specifics are actually quite popular and do not inhibit a citizen from casting a ballot. Most of the requirements Biden contends are now compulsory for democracy to properly function had only been instituted in the past few years -- many of them only during the last election. Biden's comparing Jim Crow to contemporary voter integrity laws is detestable. One was a violent suppression of the minority vote; the other was giving voters only 11 weeks before an election to request a ballot and declining to keep expanding voting into the weekend.

At this pace, Democrats will be arguing that disenfranchisement of illegal immigrants is the manifestation of the Dixiecrat agenda by 2024.

ID requirements are what the left detests most, yet this is the provision they talk about least. Why? Most polls find overwhelming majority support for limiting early voting hours and requiring photo IDs to vote. Fascists in Colorado and Connecticut and most other states, not only Georgia, still demand a person provide government-issued ID to vote. They, just like Georgia, allow voters without ID to provide the last four digits of their Social Security number, a bank statement or utility bill, a paycheck or any other government document with their name and address. (Maybe if states allowed vaccine passports to suffice, Democrats would be up for it.)

But most Americans -- most people in the free world -- have believed it eminently reasonable to expect voters to identify themselves before participating in democracy. If Democrats believed the vote was sacred, so would they. It's the Democrats who are advocating overturning the will of voters in Georgia and elsewhere. Let's remember that H.R. 1 "voting rights" bill would have compelled states to allow ballot harvesting, to ban voter ID laws, to allow felons to vote and to count mail-in votes that arrive up to 10 days after Election Day.

The president sprinkled his speech with feigned indignation and lots of podium pounding. Unable to contain his penchant for fabulism, he seemed to joke about being arrested ("the first time") during a civil rights march. Maybe Biden was confusing that incident with the time he wasn't arrested in South Africa for trying to see Nelson Mandela or didn't defend the Black Panthers in court or never participated in a sit-in.

But one can suspect most Democrats understand well that this is all a nasty bit of cynical political theater since there is little chance of nuking the filibuster. Biden's attempt to launch his entire agenda in a single reconciliation moonshot stuffed with progressive extravagances failed to get a simple majority. Stymied, the president has decided to preemptively undermine confidence in the 2022 and 2024 elections, smearing half the country as racists while cosplaying as a civil rights hero. "The Big Lie," indeed. The consequences of this will be the further deterioration of trust in elections. More division. More anger.

Joe Biden's Deplorable Lies May Not Even Be in His Partisan Interest
Townhall.com ^ | January 14, 2022 | Michael Barone
Posted on 1/14/2022, 8:05:19 AM by

How do you explain why an ultra-experienced politician makes a major speech on the behalf of a legislative goal that is both doomed to fail and unpopular with voters? Especially when his speech is boycotted by the bill's chief backers and consists of one big lie after another?

resident Joe Biden's speech in Atlanta on Tuesday raised these questions, although most of the media are unlikely to ask them.

The speech purported to rally support for the Democrats' legislation to impose federal standards on voting in all 50 states -- legislation that has no chance of passing. It doesn't even seem to have the support of all 50 Senate Democrats, but if it does, it is sure to be the subject of a Republican filibuster.

Biden's calls for Democrats to abolish filibusters for voting laws are opposed by Democratic Sens. Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema, and possibly several others.

At the same time, organizations advocating Biden's changes pointedly boycotted his Atlanta event. So did Stacey Abrams, the Georgia legislator who claimed, two years before then-President Donald Trump made similar claims, that she had actually won the 2018 Georgia governor's race, which she lost by 54,000 votes.

Abrams, who is running again this year, said she had a scheduling conflict. Obviously, this was a "shocking snub," as one critic put it, of Biden and also of Vice President Kamala Harris, who accompanied him. But it was not as shocking as the big lies in Biden's speech.

Start with the title of his "Freedom to Vote Act," which implies that Americans are not already free to vote. Go on to his peroration: "Do you want to be on the side of Dr. King or George Wallace? Do you want to be on the side of John Lewis or Bull Connor? Do you want to be on the side of Abraham Lincoln or Jefferson Davis?"

The implication is that anyone who favors requiring photo ID for voters, as 35 states do, is on the same side as those who proclaimed "segregation forever" or rebelled against the Union to preserve slavery.

This also passes over the embarrassing fact that George Wallace, Bull Connor and Jefferson Davis were all partisan Democrats. Connor, in fact, was Alabama's Democratic National Committeeman at the time he directed police dogs and fire hoses at peaceful demonstrators in Birmingham in 1963.

Biden campaigned as a practitioner of comity who would bring people back together. Instead, he now accuses those repealing the election rules that were passed in 2020 in response to the COVID-19 pandemic of being supporters of slavery and segregation, "Jim Crow 2.0" and "voter suppression."

Actually, none of the state legislatures he is accusing of these sins have proposed any changes to make voting harder than it was in 2019. The idea that these laws suppress "democracy" or "freedom" raises the question of why the former Sen. and Vice President Biden didn't do more to change them before 2019.

Biden's stand is also out of line with public opinion. A recent Echelon Insights poll showed that 47% of voters favor returning to pre-pandemic voting procedures versus 41% who favor making the pandemic changes permanent.

Those numbers are similar to the current partisan balance and reflect different ways of balancing the worthy goals of assuring access and preventing fraud.

They also reflect differing partisan interests. For most of the 79 years of Biden's life, most marginal voters have been downscale, transient and more Democratic than Republican. The rule of thumb was that high turnout helped Democrats.

That's no longer clear, as Trump accelerated the preexisting trends of upscale voters toward Democrats and downscale voters toward Republicans.

If anyone has been suppressing votes, they haven't done a good job at it. The 21st century, with its increasing partisan conflict, has seen rising voter turnout, from 105 million in 2000 to 158 million in 2020.

Turnout has only decreased, compared to four years prior, in the two most recent years when Democratic presidents have run for reelection: 1996 and 2012. It has risen most rapidly when Republican presidents have run for reelection: by 16% in 2004 and again in 2020.

Republican turnout increases of 11 million reelected George W. Bush in 2004 and came within just 42,000 votes of reelecting Trump. In the latter case, they also unexpectedly produced Republican gains in congressional and state legislative seats.

So the Democrats' election bill, besides lacking the votes to pass, may not be in their own partisan interest. This makes the big lies in Biden's Atlanta speech all the more inexcusable.

Dems Leave With Zombie Election Bills after Sinema, Manchin Death Blows
Raw News ^ | Jan 13, 2022
Posted on 1/13/2022,

Just minutes before President Joe Biden arrived in his old stomping grounds for the first time, Sen. Kyrsten (D-AZ), made it clear that it was a wasteful trip.

Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV)—her partner in inflicting intra-party pain and the only other Senate Democratic holdout for a filibuster exception—called her performance “excellent.”

Biden conceded he wasn’t sure that Democrats could get something done on voting rights...

Democrats left their Thursday meeting with Biden in dismay at the possibility of what might next. Sinema’s speech—timed to maximize its effect—particularly stung Democrats from Capitol Hill to the White House.

Most Senate Democrats declined to engage much with their Arizona colleague’s move. “I think it just speaks for itself,” said Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT)…

The White House did not immediately respond to questions about Sinema’s remarks, although one longtime Biden advisor messaged The Daily Beast roughly halfway through her remarks that the president was likely “spitting bullets” over the perceived disrespect of delivering a speech torpedoing his agenda only minutes before he was set to address the caucus.

“Just colossally disrespectful,” the longtime advisor said. “It’s a middle finger, and it’s frankly unimaginable to someone who spent four decades in the Senate.”

Although White House press secretary Jen Psaki told reporters that she would not “get into any private conversations” between Biden and Sinema, those on the staff level were blindsided by the Arizona senator’s remarks until they were first reported on Twitter.

Within the West Wing, the collapse of Biden’s push for filibuster reform came amidst a torrent of bad news, including a Supreme Court decision striking down his nationwide vaccine and testing mandate for large businesses. One person familiar with the internal response to the Arizona senator’s remarks only sent a red-faced swearing emoji; another summed it up as “ughhhhhhhhhhh” with eleven H’s...

Joe Biden's disastrous 48 hours
The Hill ^ | January 14, 2022 | Joe Concha
Posted on 1/14/2022, 11:38:15 AM

It's hard to imagine a worse 48-hour stretch for any first-year president than the one Joe Biden endured over the past two days.

On Wednesday, Quinnipiac University released a devastating poll placing the president's public approval at 33 percent, his lowest approval in any poll since his presidency began.

What makes just one-third of the country supporting this president even more remarkable is that Biden received more votes than any other presidential candidate in history: 81 million, or more than 10 million more votes than the previous record holder, Barack Obama. The drop has been unprecedented: Biden sat at 55 percent approval upon entering office almost one year ago.

Also on Wednesday, it was announced that the Consumer Price Index rose seven percent in 2021, its fastest increase since 1982. It was also announced that inflation is now sitting at a 40-year high.

Things somehow was worse on Thursday. The president went to Capitol Hill to rally Democrats around passing voting rights legislation, only to see Sen. Kyrsten Sinema (D-Ariz.) go to the floor ahead of his arrival to declare that she would not support eliminating the filibuster.

And as if straight out of a political horror movie, not long after the president got news of Sinema's remarks, the Supreme Court ruled to block enforcement of a vaccine mandate for businesses with 100 or more employees.

Add it all up: The economy is crippled by high prices and not-so-transitory inflation. The president is rebuffed (again) by a member of his own party on a major initiative. And then his vaccine mandate is struck down by a 6-3 decision in the Supreme Court.

All in less than 48 hours.
