Biden blames oil prices on Ukraine war, credits Democrats for improving economy
NBC News / Comcast ^ | March 11, 2022 | By Sahil Kapur

PHILADELPHIA — President Joe Biden told House Democrats gathered here on Friday that 2022 “may be the most important off-year election in modern history,” gave his party credit for an improving economy and rejected blame for rising gas prices.

“Democrats didn’t cause this problem. Vladimir Putin did,” Biden said of the Russian president. “Putin’s gas tax has pushed prices higher.”

Biden touted the $1.9 trillion Covid relief and economic stimulus package on the anniversary of its enactment. “We created 6.7 million jobs last year, more than any other time in American history,” he said.

“We did it alone. Without one single solitary Republican vote," he said. "It was the Democrats — it was you — that brought us back."

Biden said the real reason prices are so high in the U.S. — “notwithstanding what Republicans say” — is twofold: Covid’s disruptions to supply chains, and Putin’s war in Ukraine driving up gas prices. “Make no mistake, inflation’s largely the fault of Putin,” he said.

Biden said his administration has sought to promote domestic energy while trying to balance it with steps to boost clean energy and combating climate change.

After his remarks, Biden was set to hold a question-and-answer session with the Democratic lawmakers that was closed to the press.

President Joe Biden complained Friday he was “sick” of Americans blaming him for inflation instead of the coronavirus pandemic or Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“I’m sick of this stuff… The American people think the reason for inflation is the government spending more money,” Biden said angrily. “Simply. Not. True.”

The White House is briefing TikTok stars about the war in Ukraine

On Thursday afternoon, 30 top TikTok stars gathered on a Zoom call to receive key information about the war unfolding in Ukraine. National Security Council staffers and White House press secretary Jen Psaki briefed the influencers about the United States’ strategic goals in the region and answered questions on distributing aid to Ukrainians, working with NATO and how the United States would react to a Russian use of nuclear weapons.

The White House has been closely watching TikTok’s rise as a dominant news source, leading to its decision to approach a select group of the platform’s most influential names.

This week, the administration began working with Gen Z For Change, a nonprofit advocacy group, to help identify top content creators on the platform to orchestrate a briefing aimed at answering questions about the conflict and the United States’ role in it. Victoria Hammett, deputy executive director of Gen Z For Change, contacted dozens with invitations via email and gathered potential questions for the Biden administration.

Recession Rumbles Grow Louder as Impact of Economic Stimulus Fades

There will be growth in the spring, to cite once again Chauncey Gardiner, the supposed savant in the 1979 satire Being There, who actually was Chance, the gardener. Chauncey’s dimwitted utterances somehow were taken as incredibly profound by the powerful Washington elite, and through a series of improbable events, he would become the president’s key adviser on how to cure the nation’s ailing economy.

The real presidents in that era wouldn’t have done any worse by listening to Chauncey rather than to their actual advisers. Back in the fall of 1974, the Ford administration assembled an all-day conference on solutions to the soaring prices besetting the nation. The initial answer—WIN buttons, for Whip Inflation Now—somehow had failed to do the trick, so the White House cast about for alternatives.

The joke was that, unbeknownst to all the assembled experts, the U.S. already was nearly a year into the recession that had begun in November 1973 and wouldn’t end until March 1975. While that escaped the worthies in Washington, Wall Street certainly noticed. Stocks were deep into a truly vicious and protracted bear market

Iran Launches Attack on U.S. Consulate in Iraq and Biden Still Pursues a Deal
The New York Sun ^ | March 13, 2022 | Beni Avni
Posted on 3/14/2022, 11:07:52 AM by Wuli

As Iranian terrorists attack an American consulate in Iraq and threaten former American officials, the Biden administration is scrambling in what appears to be a last-ditch attempt to revive the Iran appeasement — and might even be prepared to delist Iran from its terrorist list.

The attack in Iraq involved at least 12 ballistic missiles. They were launched from Iran overnight and landed near the American consulate at Erbil, Iraq. The State Department reported there was no damage to the consulate and no casualties, but it condemned the attack as “outrageous.”

Yet America is declining to call off negotiations in the aftermath of the attack. “We will have to see” about the fate of the deal, the national security adviser, Jake Sullivan, told CBS this morning.

Russian Oil Import Ban Just a Distraction From Biden’s Anti-Energy Policies
https://www.heritage.org ^ | Mar 9th, 2022 | Katie Tubb is a senior policy analyst for energy and environmental issues in the Thomas A. Roe Insti
Posted on 3/14/2022, 10:20:42 AM by UMCRevMom@aol.com

Key Takeaways

1- The administration continues to be unwilling to make the necessary policy changes for an import ban to be truly effective.

2- Biden has made it very clear that his administration intends to put the coal, oil, and perhaps even natural gas industries in America out of business.

3- The U.S. also needs to look to its allies to play their part: Europe must become an energy-producing region again. Copied

President Joe Biden on Tuesday announced a nationwide ban on imports of Russian oil, coal, and natural gas, relenting to pressure to stand against Russia’s unprovoked invasion of Ukraine.

Unfortunately, the administration is only projecting the appearance of a principled stand and continues to be unwilling to make the necessary policy changes for an import ban to be truly effective.

The president’s decision came in the wake of proposed bipartisan legislation, political support from Democratic congressional leadership, public support, and the initiative of many companies to disassociate themselves with Russian products and markets.

If he didn’t act, it’s very likely Congress would have led the way instead.

Yet, the administration inexplicably has done little to change course in light of the current realities. While Biden made no secret of his anti-energy policy agenda from the first month of his presidency, the administration hasn’t even pumped the brakes on regulations that will increase the cost of energy and block Americans’ ability to use it.

Just in the past week, the administration has only doubled down to:

-propose new climate standards to regulate conventional trucks out of existence. -decline to appeal a federal court decision vacating the only lease sale held on federal lands or waters (despite clear statutory direction from Congress to regularly hold sales). -propose any day now what some are calling “the biggest rule … the [Securities and Exchange Commission] has done in quite some time”; namely, mandating companies disclose greenhouse emissions from their entire supply chain.

While asking American energy companies for short-term increases in production to bail the administration out of political trouble, Biden has made it very clear that his administration intends to put the coal, oil, and perhaps even natural gas industries in America out of business.

The Biden administration is trying to single-handedly commit the U.S. to a centrally planned energy sector built around a narrow set of politically preferred, unproven energy technologies that the administration presumes are the solution to global warming.

But as the world has seen, Europe is paying a steep financial and political price for its policy choices over the years to curtail its own energy production and opt for Russian imports.

The only reason American families and businesses are not hurting more than they already are is because energy production is happening primarily on state and private lands—and in spite of Biden’s anti-energy agenda.

When confronted with the incongruence of the Biden administration’s policies relative to the energy realities on the ground, Biden and White House press secretary Jennifer Psaki have pointed to the existing leases energy companies have on federal lands and waters.

But this (at best) betrays a serious misunderstanding of how leasing, permitting, and energy production on federal lands and waters happens.

The administration continues to shift blame and recycle the tired argument that the solution isn’t to use the energy resources we have, but to force a transition to politically preferred technologies.

Not only has that failed in the past, it is utterly unrealistic. The U.S. Energy Information Administration projects no scenario in which global demand for oil and natural gas do not increase through at least 2050, and for coal use to persist as an important source of energy globally.

Rather than call off the regulatory hounds on American energy producers, the administration is reportedly in discussions with Venezuela to access more energy. That’s yet another consequence of a failed foreign policy approach in the Middle East, where the Biden administration burned bridges early on with Saudi Arabia.

In other words, Biden is considering trading the energy of one authoritarian, Russian President Vladimir Putin, for that of another, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro. The latter’s actions led the U.S. to impose sanctions in 2019 on Venezuela, which are still in effect.

Biden must change course and make the policy changes necessary to weaken Russia’s influence in global energy markets. Not only is such a shift extremely popular—a recent poll showed 70% of Americans support energy production in the U.S.—but to do otherwise puts Biden in direct conflict with the well-being of Americans, who get nearly 80% of their energy from oil, natural gas, and coal.

The U.S. also needs to look to its allies to play their part: Europe must become an energy-producing region again.

The Biden administration needs to follow up words with real action: Call off the regulatory hounds and unleash the American energy sector—all of it. [originally appeared in The Daily Signal]

They Refused to Take His Call: Saudis and UAE Won’t Lower Oil Prices Until Biden Helps Them With This Problem
Frontpage Mag ^ | 03/14/2022 | Robert Spencer
Posted on 3/14/2022, 10:46:23 AM

America, in these halcyon days of Old Joe Biden’s foundering regime, is in free fall, and the whole world knows it. As PJM’s inimitable Stephen Green put it recently, “The alleged American president’s response to the Ukraine War has been so detrimental to America’s own interests that everyone sees him as weak. Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that two of the Middle East’s richest petrostates wouldn’t even take Biden’s call,” that is, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The reasons for the unprecedented snub are clear: the Saudis and the UAE know that Biden is not a serious character, and they also know that his handlers are not likely to give him the one thing they want most from the United States: help against Iran.

Old Joe was trying to get in touch with Mohammed bin Salman, the crown prince of Saudi Arabia, and Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed al Nahyan, the crown prince of Abu Dhabi, both of whom are the de facto rulers of their respective countries, to try to get some relief for skyrocketing gas prices. The UK’s Daily Mail reported that “as oil prices push over $130 a barrel for the first time in almost 14 years, the two Gulf countries are the only major oil producers that can pump millions more barrels of more oil to calm the crude market at a time when American gasoline prices are at high levels.”

They’re the only major oil producers who can help, but they won’t, at least not until they get some assistance from Old Joe regarding Yemen. In Yemen, the Iran-backed Shi’ite Houthis are waging jihad against the Sunnis in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Biden’s handlers, anxious to replicate Barack Obama’s disastrous Iran nuclear deal, are making concession after concession to the Iranian mullahs. The Saudis and the UAE have noticed and want Biden to play ball with them before they will consider lowering oil prices.

Saudi Arabia can hardly be classified as a totally reliable ally of the United States, particularly given lingering questions about the extent of its involvement at the highest levels in the 9/11 jihad attacks. However, it is a notable bulwark against Iran in the region, and so many on both sides of the aisle see the utility of the American alliance with the kingdom. That group, however, apparently does not include Biden’s handlers. In September 2021, they quietly removed an advanced missile defense system from Saudi Arabia, heedless of the fact that the Saudis were suffering ongoing air attacks from the Houthis in Yemen.

This was yet another attempt to appease the mullahs in Tehran. The Saudi Defense Ministry shrugged it off, saying its relationship with the U.S. was “strong, longstanding and historic,” and adding: “The redeployment of some defense capabilities of the friendly United States of America from the region is carried out through common understanding and realignment of defense strategies as an attribute of operational deployment and disposition.” However, the former director of Saudi Arabia’s intelligence services, Prince Turki al-Faisal, sounded a dissenting note, saying: “I think we need to be reassured about American commitment. That looks like, for example, not withdrawing Patriot missiles from Saudi Arabia at a time when Saudi Arabia is the victim of missile attacks and drone attacks — not just from Yemen, but from Iran.”

In the context of all this, it is important to remember what Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said on November 5, 2020: that “the next U.S. administration will surrender to the Iranian nation.” This wasn’t just tough talk. In light of Biden’s handlers’ apparent willingness to give the mullahs all they want and more, it was a sober assessment of the geopolitical situation.

And now it is bearing bitter fruit. Biden and the U.S. are in this bind all because Biden’s handlers wanted to vindicate Obama and discredit Trump. Obama’s ridiculously weak Iran nuclear deal was his cornerstone foreign policy achievement, but then Trump skewered it — correctly — as the worst deal any American administration has ever concluded, and got us out of it. Now Biden’s handlers are so desperate to shore up Obama’s sagging legacy that they’re willing to turn their backs on our allies and empower an enemy rogue state that chants “Death to America” to do it. When you’re taking out a second mortgage to pay for a tank of gas, you can thank Old Joe for doing everything he had to do to get his Iran deal.

Biden's inflation blame game: President insists his policies not behind high prices
https://justthenews.com ^ | March 14, 2022 - 11:07pm | By Aaron Kliegman

With inflation soaring and Americans hurting, Democrats point finger at COVID, Putin, company greed — but not government spending, which experts say is the main cause.

With Americans feeling the economic pain of inflation, President Biden is deflecting blame for the ongoing surge in prices, insisting COVID-19, Russia, and corporate greed are the real causes.

Experts disagree, however, arguing massive government spending by Biden and Democrats is far more responsible for the inflationary struggles the country is now enduring.

"The American people think the reason for inflation is the government is spending more money," Biden told lawmakers at a retreat for House Democrats in Philadelphia on Friday. "Simply not true."

Biden argued prices are historically high right now for two reasons: COVID-19 and Russian President Vladimir Putin.

"Because of the pandemic, we've had disruptions in our supply chain materials and important materials," he said, before turning to Russia's months-long military buildup on the border and recent invasion of Ukraine.

"Make no mistake, inflation is largely the fault of Putin," Biden told House Democrats. "Democrats didn't cause this problem. Vladimir Putin did."

Rep. Kevin Brady (R-Texas), ranking member of the powerful House Ways and Means Committee, took issue with Biden's comments.

"The White House's claim that this is because of Russia is nonsense," Brady told Just the News. "They are trying to ignore last week's report showing that inflation is accelerating, and has been over the last half of a year."

Last week, the Labor Department reported that consumer prices surged by 7.9% in February compared to the same time last year. The annualized increase marked a 40-year high for the Consumer Price Index.

Much of this inflation was already in place and rising well before Russia's invasion of Ukraine and was at most only partially caused by supply chain issues due to COVID-19, according to experts who spoke to Just the News.

"Some 80% of the inflation we've seen since Biden entered the White House has been prior to the attack by Putin," said Stephen Moore, the senior economist for FreedomWorks. "This predated his invasion. We already had runaway inflation. The Ukraine crisis just made it worse."

Regarding COVID-19, Moore noted the U.S. had several months of economic growth and recovery in 2020 with former President Trump in the White House during the pandemic, and inflation was around 2%. "Where was the supply chain problem when Trump was in office?" he asked.

Dr. Douglas Holtz-Eakin, president of the American Action Forum, argued the pandemic and supply chain crisis played a partial role but nothing more. He compared the stories of inflation in the U.S. and Europe, noting the latter's prices increased steadily over the course of last year while the U.S. saw inflation increase slightly in the first quarter and skyrocket in the second quarter after passage of the American Rescue Plan, a Democrat-backed $1.9 trillion economic stimulus bill.

"If this was all COVID-19 and supply chains," he argued, the pattern between the U.S. and Europe would be more similar. "This is half from supply chain, half excessive spending."

Holtz-Eakin also explained that shelter inflation was at 1.6% last January when Biden took office and is now at 4.7%, rising every month in the interim.

"Shelter accounts for about one-third of every household budget," he said. "This has nothing to do with Ukraine or oil prices and has little to do with the global supply chain."

When it comes to inflation, the elephant in the room is the American Rescue Plan, which Biden signed into law last March.

At the Democratic retreat, Biden "thanked God" for the stimulus, describing it as legislation that saved the country from crisis.

"And it didn't cause the inflation," he added.

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) took that argument a step further.

"The government spending is doing the exact reverse, reducing the national debt," she said. "It is not inflationary."

"I don't find that argument very plausible," said Moore. "Biden's war on American energy caused oil and gas to go way up, and massive multi-trillion dollar spending" led to the inflation we're seeing.

Moore argued COVID-19 restrictions reduced the supply of goods and services, which was further hurt by the threat of higher taxes when Biden entered office. At the same time, he said, demand increased, which was bolstered by massive legislative packages that paid people not to work, thereby also causing a further reduction in supply through less people working.

Republicans have pointed the finger specifically at the American Rescue Plan.

"Just after President Biden's nearly $2 trillion COVID stimulus, inflation has raged in America for the past year, so far wiping out three years of wage gains," said Brady.

Holtz-Eakin didn't buy Biden and Pelosi's argument either, saying the American Rescue Plan was a central contributor to soaring inflation.

"I think that's wrong," he said. "Government spending has contributed a lot to inflation. They created this situation."

Last February, Lawrence Summers, who served as treasury secretary under former President Bill Clinton, warned the American Rescue Plan would overheat the economy and bring about inflation. After the bill was passed, Summers, who also served as a top economic adviser to former President Barack Obama, called the legislation "the least responsible macroeconomic policy we've had in the last 40 years."

Months after its passage, Summers continued to warn Biden to ease up on economic stimulus or risk unleashing major inflation.

Last week, Summers criticized the Biden administration for deflecting blame for inflation. Beyond COVID-19 and Russian aggression, Biden has also pointed the finger at price gouging by companies and industries that, according to the White House, have a lack of competition and contributed to price hikes. One such industry targeted by the president is meatpacking.

"The president was wrong to blame this month's number on Ukraine," said Summers. "Blaming corporate greed will chill business confidence, will reduce investment in expanding capacity, and will likely make this worse."

Regardless of who Biden is blaming, the American people seem to be holding him accountable. According to recent polling, a large majority of Americans disapprove of Biden's handling of the economy in general and inflation specifically. This trend has been evident in the polls for several months.

One likely reason for the widespread disapproval is that people are feeling the effects of high prices. Real wages — the value of wages corrected for inflation — are sinking quickly.

On paper, average hourly earnings were up 6.7% this February from the same time last year. However, wages are rising at a lower rate than prices, and real wages decreased 2.6% over the same period.

In other words, even if the number on their paycheck is higher than it was previously, Americans have less money to spend.

"What your paycheck can buy — what they call real wages — has dropped so fast this year, it is the fastest decline in the history of measuring these issues," said Brady.

However, experts noted, the blame shouldn't all fall on Biden.

The Federal Reserve "accommodated" this inflationary trend and has "blood on their hands," according to Moore. "They should be raising interest rates."

Holtz-Eakin agreed that higher interest rates are a "necessary evil."

In 2020, the Fed announced a new approach to inflation, saying it would be OK with the rate running higher than the standard 2% target as long as the average was around there. So, the Fed put its foot on the monetary gas and avoided hiking interest rates to support the labor market and broader economy.

However, inflation "tends to be like a snowball rolling down the hill" or a "venereal disease," said Moore. "Once you open the spigots, it's tough to close or control them."

"Central bankers should fear inflation," explained Holtz-Eakin. "Once it gets going, there are no easy options."

‘The Memo has Gone Out’: The Left, ABC News Puppet Biden’s Claim That High Gas is ‘Putin’s Price Hike’ Um, high gas prices hit us way before Russia elevated its invasion of Ukraine.

They don’t even hide it. No matter how often it happens it shocks me when the media showcases it takes talking points from the government.

Gas prices started to skyrocket before Russia enhanced its invasion of Ukraine (remember that Russia invaded eight years ago). It’s no lie that gas prices will get worse because of the invasion. But it is a lie to blame it on Putin.

So far I’ve only seen ABC News puppet the “Putin’s price” lie and a local station. But the Democrats are going to town with it.

Today I’ll vote to ban U.S. dollars from funding Putin’s war machine.

Now we must do everything in our power to shield working people from Putin’s price hike at the pump by fully restoring America’s energy independence and passing a working-class tax cut.

I support punishing Putin with a ban on Russian oil imports to the U.S., and I support this bipartisan legislation to increase production and use of Made in America biofuel to help lower costs for Wisconsinites who face Putin's price spike at the pump.https://t.co/lNJeRXmZlu

Let’s be clear: this is Putin’s price hike.

High gas prices are the result of rapid shifts in supply & demand due to COVID & Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine. It’s time to work together to find solutions, not exploit this crisis for political gain. https://t.co/NrD6llEgOY

On an inflation adjusted basis the price of West Texas Intermediate-trading near $120-would have to move to near $180 per barrel to equal the previous all time high of $145.29 posted on 7/3/08. US producer prices climbed 10% in February from a year ago
Associated Press ^ | March 15, 2022 | Paul Wiseman

Wholesale inflation in the United States shot up 10% last month from a year earlier — another sign that inflationary pressures remain intense at all levels of the economy.

The Labor Department said Tuesday that its producer price index — which tracks inflation before it hits consumers — rose 0.8% from January. The increases were in line with economists’ forecasts.

Wholesale energy prices were up 33.8% over the past year and food prices 13.7%.

The report did not include price changes after Feb. 15, missing a spike in energy prices when Russia invaded Ukraine nine days later.

Saudi Arabia Mulls Pricing of China Oil Sales in Yuan
WSL via MSN ^ | 3/15/2022 | MSN
Posted on 3/15/2022, 10:42:42 AM

The Wall Street Journal reports active talks between Riyadh and Beijing about pricing some Saudi oil sales to China in yuan instead of dollars.

Chatter about this sort of arrangement has been ongoing for several years, but recent events have brought a new urgency to talks, according to the report, which says the Saudis are questioning longstanding U.S. security commitments to the Kingdom.

Among the issues is what the Saudis believe to be less-than-enthusiastic support for the war in Yemen, the White House's attempt at an Iran nuclear deal, and shock at the American withdrawal from Afghanistan. China is a buyer of more than 25% of Saudi Arabia's exported oil, according to the story.

The news would seemingly be of interest to the Bitcoin (BTC) and gold markets, but, for now, there's little reaction, with bitcoin continuing in the mid-$38,000 area, and gold remaining lower by 2.1% for the day at $1,918 per ounce.

Biden Promises Executive Action on Climate Change as Energy Costs Spike
breitbart ^ | 15 Mar 2022 | CHARLIE SPIERING

President Joe Biden reassured donors Monday that he would use his executive powers to act on climate change, even as energy prices are at record highs.

“The climate crisis is the existential threat. That’s not hyperbole; it’s a fact,” Biden said after taking the podium at a Democratic National Committee Fundraiser in Washington, DC.

Biden promised to take “aggressive” executive actions on climate regulations even if the Supreme Court overruled him. He acknowledged that progress on the issue of climate change was difficult to achieve in Congress, hinting that donors could help him pressure lawmakers.

“Our grandchildren will never forgive us, and the world will change. I mean, literal sense it will change,” he said.

“Imagine where we’d be right now if, in fact, Europe was in fact energy free of fossil fuels and we were in a situation where it was all renewables,” he said. “It’d be a different world.”

He told the audience of donors the issue of climate change was personal, as he cited a conversation he had that day with his daughter Ashley, who is a social worker.

“I called her tonight to tell her I love her … and she said, ‘Dad, you’re talking about climate, right? Talking about climate,'” he recalled to the audience. “And dad is talking about climate.”

WATCH: Former Obama Economist Rips Biden Strategy of Blaming Putin for 40-Year High Inflation
NewsBusters ^ | 3/15/2022 | Joseph Vazquez
Posted on 3/15/2022, 1:52:41 P

Economist Lawrence Summers tore into President Joe Biden for redirecting the blame for America’s inflation crisis.

Summers, Obama’s former National Economic Council director, said Biden was flat-out “wrong” to blame inflation on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine during a March 11 segment on Bloomberg TV’s Wall Street Week. Inflation hit 7.9 percent in February on a year-to-year basis, its highest level in more than 40 years. Summers was blunt: “While inflation was 7.9 percent over the last year, if you annualize the monthly figure, it was close to ten percent. So we’re not seeing deceleration yet,” he said.
