Attorney General Merrick Garland names Robert Hur special counsel to probe Biden classified docs
nypost ^ | 1/12/2023 | mark moore
Posted on 1/12/2023,

Attorney General Merrick Garland announced Thursday he had appointed a special counsel to investigate how classified documents ended up at an office President Biden used at his namesake think tank in Washington, DC, and his home in Delaware.

Republicans called on Garland to name a special counsel to examine whether the Obama-era documents were mishandled by Biden following revelations this week that a box containing classified documents were discovered in a locked closet in an office the president used at the Penn Biden Center for Diplomacy and Global Engagement on Nov. 2, just days before the midterm elections.

Then on Thursday, Biden, 80, confirmed reports that emerged Wednesday that more classified records were found in his Delaware home where he stores his prized Corvette.

“I also said we’re cooperating fully and completely with the Justice Department’s review. As part of that process, my lawyers reviewed other places where documents might — from my time as vice president — were stored and they finished the review last night. They discovered a small number of documents with classified markings in storage areas and file cabinets in my home and my personal library,” Biden told reporters on Thursday.

Garland had previously tapped the US Attorney in Chicago, John Lausch, to review the classified documents found at the Penn Biden Center.

In November, Garland named veteran prosecutor Jack Smith as special counsel to determine whether former President Donald Trump should face charges after classified documents recovered at his Florida resort in August.

Joy Behar suggests Republicans planted documents on Biden to help Trump: 'Somehow these documents appear'
Fox News ^ | 01/12/2023 | Hanna Panreck | Fox News
Posted on 1/12/2023, 3:49:44 PM by

"The View" co-host Joy Behar said Thursday that she didn't know a luckier person than former President Donald Trump and said President Biden's classified documents appeared just as "we were this close" to getting Trump.

"I've never seen a luckier person than Donald Trump," Behar declared. "Just as we're this close to getting him, somehow these documents appear," appearing to suggest they were planted.

Co-host Alyssa Farah Griffin argued that Biden was "building" Trump's defense for him and added that he was "wrong to have done this."

"He is wrong," co-host Sunny Hostin agreed.

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg emphasized waiting to find out "what this is" first.

"Let’s find out what this is first. Again, one of the things that gets me crazy is before we know, it’s already been spun a specific way," she said. "I don’t want to see that. I want to see someone explain to me, how it’s possible that after all this time, nobody knew. Because to me, if you are missing classified information — I don’t mean to laugh, but in my house, if stuff is missing, I know it’s missing."

Focus Moves to Office Joe Biden Shared With Chinese as Search for Classified Docs Intensifies
Washington Free Beacon ^ | January 12, 2023 | Chuck Ross
Posted on 1/13/2023, 3:51:12 AM by Brown Deer

The discovery of two batches of classified documents from Joe Biden’s time as vice president could bring renewed attention to an office the president shared with his scandal-plagued son Hunter and a Chinese energy conglomerate linked to Chinese military intelligence.

Joe and Hunter Biden were "office mates" with executives from CEFC China Energy in 2017, according to emails from Hunter’s abandoned laptop. In an email to the general manager for the K Street office building, Hunter Biden said the office would be shared by his consulting firm Hudson West, CEFC China Energy, and the Biden Foundation, his family charity.

"[P]lease have keys made available for new office mates," Hunter Biden wrote in a Sept. 21, 2017 email, listing Joe Biden, his stepmother Jill Biden, his uncle Jim Biden, and Gongwen Dong, whom he identified as the "emissary" for the chairman of the now-bankrupt Chinese energy conglomerate CEFC.

While the Bidens left the office in 2018, their cohabitation with CEFC executives could raise national security concerns in light of the revelation that Joe Biden kept classified documents related to Ukraine, Iran, and the United Kingdom in another Washington, D.C., office. Biden aides have also discovered classified records in Biden’s garage at his home in Wilmington, Del. Attorney General Merrick Garland on Thursday appointed a special counsel to investigate how the documents, some of which are marked "top secret," ended up at the Biden properties.

Rep. Darrell Issa (R., Calif.), a member of the House Judiciary Committee, said the discoveries should prompt the Justice Department to conduct an exhaustive search of all of Joe and Hunter Biden’s current and former properties.

"If the DOJ and specifically the FBI haven’t conducted the widest possible search of every known location where Joe Biden, Hunter Biden, and their associates may have kept classified documents—this is in no way a complete or legitimate investigation," Issa told the Washington Free Beacon.

It is unclear whether any classified materials were stored at the Bidens’ K Street office. But CEFC employees’ access to the office could be of particular concern given the energy conglomerate’s ties to Chinese military intelligence. Hunter Biden worked closely with the firm’s former chairman, Ye Jianming. According to a Senate Republican report, Ye served from 2003 to 2005 as deputy secretary general of the China Association for International Friendly Contacts, a front group for the People’s Liberation Army that "performs dual roles of intelligence collection and conducting propaganda and perception management campaigns."

Hunter Biden also forged close ties to CEFC employee JiaQi Bao, whom House Republicans suspect of working for Chinese intelligence. House Oversight Committee Republicans last year provided FBI director Christopher Wray with "evidence of Bao’s close relationship to Hunter Biden and her attempts to ingratiate herself with his father." Republicans said Bao received a degree from Tsinghua University, a recruiting hub for China’s intelligence services. Before joining CEFC, she worked for China’s National Development and Reform Commission.

Bao appears to have worked in the Bidens’ K Street office, located in the heart of Washington’s lobbying district.

In a March 25, 2018, email, Bao asked Hunter if there was "anything in the office that you would like me to pick up/organize for you." Bao also urged Hunter to take as much money as he could from his partnership with CEFC. "Figure out a way to have the money transferred to the right U.S. account before any restriction levied by Chinese regulators," she wrote.

"After infiltrating the Biden family, Bao urged Hunter to encourage Joe Biden to run for president months before he announced and then supplied the Biden family campaign advice related to China," said Rep. James Comer (R., Ky.), the chairman of the House Oversight panel.

In 2017 and 2018, CEFC paid Hunter Biden $5 million to scout out energy deals in the United States and Europe. CEFC paid Biden another $1 million to serve as a legal adviser for Patrick Ho, a CEFC executive who was indicted for trying to bribe two African officials for oil rights. Biden referred to Ho as "the fucking spy chief of China," in a May 2018 voice mail, according to Senate Republicans.

The White House did not respond to a request for comment.

Report: Biden Admin Officials Blame National Archives for Joe Biden’s Classified Document Scandal
Breitbart ^ | 01/13/2023 | Wendell Husebo
Posted on 1/13/2023, 1:53:58 PM by ChicagoConservative27

Former and current Biden administration officials have reportedly blamed the National Archives for mishandling President Joe Biden’s classified documents stashed in three separate locations.

According to a Friday CNN report that cited “former and current administration officials and others familiar with the process,” the National Archives refused to treat then-Vice President Biden’s records with the “same high regard” as it did former President Obama’s records.

“While the National Archives sends staff members to the White House to gather files and papers of the President, they do not treat all vice presidential papers with the same high regard, officials said,” CNN reported.

EXCLUSIVE: National Parks Service Denies Gov. Noem’s Request For Mt. Rushmore Fireworks Over ‘Adverse Effect’ On Local Tribes
The Daily Caller ^ | January 12, 2023 | Henry Rodgers
Posted on 1/13/2023, 1:43:50 PM by Twotone

Republican South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem received a letter Thursday from the National Park Service rejecting her request for Independence Day fireworks at Mount Rushmore.

The Daily Caller first obtained the letter, which was sent by Michell Wheatley to Wanda Goodman, who works for the Governor at the South Dakota Department of Tourism. In the letter, Wheatley mentions that local tribes view the fireworks as an “adverse effect” on their traditional cultural views.

“Fireworks continue to be viewed by multiple Tribes as an adverse effect on the traditional cultural landscape,” Wheatley wrote in the letter. “This view was expressed by consulting Tribes in 2020 and has been reaffirmed by Tribal government representatives in subsequent meetings and letters.”

In 2021, Noem sent letters to three members of Congress from her state urging them for their assistance in making sure the fireworks display at Mount Rushmore does not get canceled under President Joe Biden’s administration.

Then, the Caller obtained three letters to the Republican lawmakers from South Dakota, including, Sen. John Thune, Sen. Mike Rounds, and Rep. Dusty Johnson, in which Noem explains the importance of the fireworks display and also details the economic benefits of having the firework display at Mount Rushmore.

Noem told the Caller that she was worried about the display being canceled, as they were under former President Barack Obama’s administration, saying she could use the help of Republican members of Congress from the state to make sure they are not canceled again.

Apparently.  Per Bush's 2003 EO, a sitting VP can declassify what he himself has previously classified.  If Biden didn't classify the documents as VP, then we might be looking at a President Harris before long.  It should be really easy to determine if Biden classified those docs, in fact, the DOJ knows right now.

There are different levels of classified - basically, confidential, secret, and top secret.

https://sgp.fas.org/bush/eoamend.html

(l) "Declassification authority" means:

(1) the official who authorized the original classification, if that official is still serving in the same position;

The White House

Executive Order 13526- Classified National Security Information

Sec. 1.3.  Classification Authority.  (a)  The authority to classify information originally may be exercised only by:

(1)  the President and the Vice President;

(2)  agency heads and officials designated by the President; and

(3)  United States Government officials delegated this authority pursuant to paragraph (c) of this section.

Not sure why so many folks don't know how government works. Government introduces bills that makes and change laws and whatever they do once they become official the get recorded.

Laws can and do change from time to time. If you find something that legally changes/updates Obama's executive order clarifying the VP's and other’s ability to classify and declassify documents, please let me know.

Snopes is fun to read, so are some of the right-wing pundits. That doesn't mean either has the definitive answer.

I admit it is a lot more exciting to argue issues based on our personal opinions because they are so varied and, well, everyone is entitled to have one of their own. But keep in mind opinions don't change the facts, much as we may wish they did.

Uh-oh...watch the democrats and democrat controlled media try to downplay this. It keeps getting worse.

Downplaying this is not difficult. Right now, the numbers speak volumes. At last count, in Biden's case I believe we are talking about 15 or 16 classified documents (depending on which article you read), in three locations - one of which was relatively secure, (a locked closet in Biden's former office). On the other hand, I don't believe a locked garage that is housing a Corvette is necessarily secure. Vintage cars like Biden's '67 Corvette, which is worth an estimated $78,000 is probably a hot item to steal. I have yet to read where they were found in his house. Do you supposed like in Trump's case they were scattered about hither and thither among boxes off Jill's clothing?
