"The reason that the rich were so rich, Vimes reasoned, was because they managed to spend less money.

Take boots, for example. He earned thirty-eight dollars a month plus allowances. A really good pair of leather boots cost fifty dollars. But an affordable pair of boots, which were sort of OK for a season or two and then leaked like hell when the cardboard gave out, cost about ten dollars. Those were the kind of boots Vimes always bought, and wore until the soles were so thin that he could tell where he was in Ankh-Morpork on a foggy night by the feel of the cobbles.

But the thing was that good boots lasted for years and years. A man who could afford fifty dollars had a pair of boots that'd still be keeping his feet dry in ten years' time, while the poor man who could only afford cheap boots would have spent a hundred dollars on boots in the same time and would still have wet feet.

This was the Captain Samuel Vimes 'Boots' theory of socioeconomic unfairness.”

― Terry Pratchett, Men at Arms: The Play

I still favor Rocky Boots S2V. Durability isn't great but its decent, they're super comfy with good ankle flex which permits squatting for low work. No laces hooks to snag on step ladders. Excellent for all body positions work like drywall. Drawbacks: Too light duty for heavy outdoor work, sole unsuitable for digging, not waterproof, desert tan tactical boots are probably out of fashion. I can't recommend any other boot from Rocky. I've tried a few and they were disasters.

Best outdoor work boots I own are US redwings. Can't remember the model.

If I was in the US I'd spring for a full welt like Nick's or Whites' with a low heel for outdoor work. No one here would be able to do a rebuild tho so having a rebuildable boot is pointless.

If I wasn't grabbing step ladders between my legs all the time, and if building sites weren't on soft sand, I'd just go with sneakers. Carpenters need steel caps but drywallers don't. All they do for me is freeze my toes.

In my experience switching out the shoes you wear at least daily increases their time of usefulness. It is also better for your feet. Currently, I have a couple of dozen pairs of shoes. Some of which are several years old and still in good condition.

Shoe weirdo stuff - https://www.youtube.com/c/RoseAnvil/videos .

On the cheap end, surplus boots work great, but look :-\.

Red Wings still work out the best for me in terms of comfort/value. For sneakers it's Asics or Adidas.

I've got 2 but a second pair to let yesterday's dry out fully is basically an antibacterial strategy, as is the famous 'change your socks 18 times a day' infantryman's creedo.

At the appearance of odor, soak shoes as well as feet in 100% alcohol. I use methylated spirits from the paint store but moonshine would probably do the trick too. My shit used to be absolutely minging. Like I'd have to leave my boots outside, go directly to the shower, sit there and scrub my feet, and you'd still smell them. Alcohol cured me completely.

I'm a disgusting individual and a total cheapskate so after I soak my feet I pour it back into the bottle. It's sitting in the shed labeled Foot Booze.

You are not only a cheapskate, but you are also very funny. Be careful to not get so drunk that you think "foot booze" is drinkable.

I assume you do not mean leather shoes as the alcohol would ruin them.

If you live somewhere where it is warm, try going sockless and wearing shoes made of breathable material. Many of my shoes are sandals or sandal like as with most of the Birkenstocks.

Red Wings are great! I believe mine are 6 years old, but i only wear them a few times a month when i go to job sites. When i worked in construction that seemed to be what everyone had in the oil patch.

For dress shoes, Johnston and Murphy, expensive but they last forever.

I'm a shoe fanatic, i have at least 20 pairs of shoes.

Disgusting?

Cheapskate?

Did you forget where you're at?

We are the home of baked grass clippings in sea salt and using Vince Goodrum's financial wizardry based on principles of second hand steals.  I mean you're posting in a thread about how to get $25 Walmart shoes to last longer than a summer of use.

Put your shoes in a ziplock bag or something and then in a freezer for 24 hours (if it gets cold enough outside to freeze overnightt then great). It kills all the odor causing bacteria.
