Yeah, those musicians and authors are starving in their mansions with champagne on the double served by some British Butler.

All file sharing is simply sharing amongst fans of a chosen line. The reason Metallica is so popular is because of file sharing through torrents that allowed all kinds of people to hear their music, despite them being to uptight about it.

What these pussies are doing is further stripping us of our freedoms for their all out of selfishness. The thing is that lack of file sharing wont always lead to higher revenues.

Look, if I have something and want to share it with people, who's to stop me? It's natural and if these idiots have problems with it then fuck them. Fuck them for not adopting with the times. Fuck them for being near socialists druggies who need to find excuses to meet the decline in the quality of their music(Metallica).

False. Metallica was popular long before the Internet came around, selling out arenas and making gold records -- all without radio play. It was a huge deal when they decided to produce a video for the song One.

As much as I'm severely disappointed with their latest music, I still supported their decision to go after Napster.

Their business is music. Why should they "give" it away for free? They got popular through years of hard work and touring.

As much as I like the Internet, fuck the idea of every damn thing being for free.

Fool, now they are popular in old Soviet blocks and third world nations.

Remember, your idea of "popular" is not the same in international terms. Now Metallica enjoys popularity even amongst the shiteist of demographics, which wasn't true when they burnt out in '92 or so.

camel jockey, how old are you? I'm 38. My Metallica knowledge comes from experiencing it firsthand, not reading about it years later on the Internet. Trust me, they were popular worldwide long before the Internet came around.

They really don't need their stuff being shared online for free to get any more popular. Which brings us back to what this thread is really about anyway -- sharing content over the Internet. If the creator or artist of the content didn't intend for it to be free, then it's called stealing. It doesn't matter that it's so easy to do via the Internet.

There you have it. Their time has indeed come and gone as newer, more aggressive bands in the metal genre have taken their place. File sharing can't help Metallica. Don't get me wrong, they forged the way for many bands, I love their old stuff and they still rock live, but their new music is in a different league compared to their old stuff which is classic metal.

Now people in other nations have easier access and there for better appreciation of Metallica. Your comparing it to before is laughable. You telling me that people who never had computers before or never had the luxury of a CD player could enjoy Kill 'Em All? Nope, sorry, they couldn't, but now thanks to file sharing and spreading of the PC everywhere, they can, and that is what you fail to understand.

How often do record companies expect us to buy the same piece of music?  If you bought an album they put out a cassette tape; if you buy a cassette tape they put out a CD; now they are selling digital downloads.  And each time they change formats they raise the price.

Granted I知 rationalizing, but I知 not buying music anymore.  The last CD I bought was in 2001, but I download/share music almost every day.  I would have no qualms about sharing a CD with a friend of mine so he could copy/rip it; file sharing is the same thing.

I think the issue should be settled otherwise, through royalties from the internet providers.

I would definitely be prepared to pay a little more per month on my internet access if it meant that artists would get paid.

That would mean the end of the record companies.

Perhaps that's why they're fighting the filesharers so hard. 8)

FWIW, I also think the filesharing has made artists more dependent on their revenues from concerts, and thus performing better live.

Very seldom do you hear about bands not showing up on time or sub-par performances.

I use itunes too, mainly because I don't want to be one of those unlucky people who gets sued by the RIAA for a ridiculous amount of money.

The RIAA has officially ended personal suits now and has targeted ISP companies with complying, so you don't need to worry, except your ISP will warn you if you share A LOT.  Also you can find songs not on bearshare or limewire by using torrents like isohunt and look for specific albums etc.

You don't need to worry.

You can always claim to have an open WLAN. Then everyone can get access to your router and it's impossible to tell who did the d/l.

Actually Metallica got their foot in the door thanks to demo trading that kids used to do all the time back in the days.  Pretty similar to a kid going on soulseek and checking out an album and than paying to see that band live.  If it weren't for file sharing I wouldn't know of half the bands that I support by seeing them live on a regular basis.

iTunes here too. Pick and choosing songs is where it at. I rarely buy full albums now.

You've got a great point.  As far as I'm concerned, if I've paid for an album once, I've bought the rights to "fair (personal) use" of that music for all time.  If I download from Limewire a song I bought on vinyl in 1979, I do not consider that "stealing".  (And probably neither would a court, if I could somehow conclusively prove I paid for it in 1979).  The problem comes in where someone downloads something they've never paid for to begin with, and has no intention of paying for in the future.

That is how I justified my file sharing--back then.  When I started file sharing back in the day I began by with songs/albums that I already owned on vinyl and cassette.  I have to admit though that these days I most often download files I have never paid for and have no intention of buying in the future.  :-[

Downloading/file sharing/stealing music is probably the most unethical thing I do on a regular basis. :'(

The price of a ticket for a concert is sky high now.  That is how they are recouping the album sale losses.  ACDC starts at $95,  My aunt paid $175 for Metallica.  Fuck that.  I will download anything I want. However I do have sympathy for the struggling independent people that sell their own cd's at shows but only if they are worthy.  :D

Good points. I rarely buy cd's anymore. I just share. I figure the recording industry has been ripping off customers for decades while at the same time beggaring artists (read: blues) through shitty deals. The music industry is a slimy, nasty one that will eat its own given the chance - Fuck'em.   :)

If I have my laptop with me when I visit family or computer friends I survey their CD collections and rip away to my hearts content.  Then I come home and transfer all the ripped music files to my main computer.  I also share my CD collects with friends so it's all reciprocal.

Ripping from CDs is much better than file sharing networks because you can rip the files according to settings you specify and you can do the entire CD.  File sharing networks tend to only have the most popular songs from a given album.  :(

RIAA lost the battle against p2p already. Routers keep a log by default, could be required.

pretty soon the industry will stop targeting end users of p2p software and go after the ISP's.  Many of the ISP's are throwing around the idea of download caps of 5-25gb/month.
Packet id's will flag users and ISP's will start terminating shit.
Good luck pirating when that happens.

When that happens we'll just share in a more localized fashion: directly between friends, at coffee shops, cafes, and public parks with wifi.  Kids will do it in high school and college.  True, it may be harder to directly share files with folks in say, Tokyo, but they are never going to be able to stop people from file sharing.

I work for a large ISP and even small municipality wireless networks are monitored for use and abuse.

College networks like the metro ethernet circuit at RIT that we run are monitored.  File sharing from one dorm room to another is visible on our end.

Actually benz, I do know about the bandwidth caps.  I'm CCNA and CWNA.  It's really not the download that you have to worry about either.  You are more likely to get flagged for excessive upload.  Penalties for distribution of pirated material is what they are looking for.  P2P users often turn off their UL or lower it (bandwidth throttling) to try and optimize their usage.  Verizon has a 5gb cap on their air cards, and Frontier is tossing around the idea of a 5gb total dl+ul cap for users not including packets used for services like online hard drive backup from Carbonite or movie dl from netflix.  Time warner monitors packets and will cut your speed if you are a heavy downloader/uploader without even telling you.
Bitcapping is more popular with cable type isp's because the core network and access network are shared.  DSL subscribers not so much because you are provisioned on your access line because it's your phone line...not shared like the cable system.  On DSL only the core is shared.  Most capping is done through the cable modems which are easy to hack and reprovision but if you get caught, your ISP will likely ban you for violation of their AUP or TOS. (acceptible use policy or terms of service)

Not very common for ISP's in the states at this point, but it's coming soon where you will likely have a 5gb cap and then metered service after...something like a per Gb fee past the 5gb included with service.

Most DSL and cable circuits are asymmetrical anyways which gives a lower ul than dl.     I could go on about this shit but i'm at work right now and the last thing I want to do at work is talk about work.

Doesn't matter.  As long as I can loan a CD to my friend or link my laptop with his, there will be file sharing.  The network maybe as small as two people but there will always be file sharing.  The genie is out of the bottle and there is nothing "the corporation" can do to stop it.

Twist the connector for your earphones around in the slot a bit. It seems to lose connection sometimes, but that usually works.
