Bob, my problem with the g-strings is nothing to do with homoeroticism. Guys in trunks, oiled , flexing , straining for whooping and whistling guys will always have a sizeable gay following. This is just the nature of the beast, it's either sexual for you or not.

My issue is much more to do with taste, decency and the fact that somewhere along the line bodybuilding has transformed from something that was meant to be artistic and aesthetic into something that resembles a male strip show at a hen night in some bumblefuck town in the middle of nowhere.

There is just no need to see a guy's asscheeks ... or garish colored cheese-cutter thongs disappearing into a tanned crack.  The props as well, guys coming on as firemen and cops and doing stripper routines where they gaze with sexually suggestive stares at the audience. It was not like this in the Pumping Iron days.

We all accept that we follow a weird and eccentric "sport/hobby/pastime" but it doesn't have to keep pushing the envelope when it comes to tackiness.

I have no quarrel with the fact that trunks should be kept to a size thats "decent"....as to your other observations, I've been in the biz for over 30 years, and have never seen the scene you describe at a BB contest.  You're right....what you describe does have a sizeable gay following...it's called a strip club and has nothing to do with legitimate bodybuilding competition.

We have had pro shows in "Gay populated areas"....they all tanked out.

The guys of the 40's were complaining that the guys of the 60's trunks were too small, same with the guys of the 70's, etc, etc....as judging criteria changed, so did the size of the trunks...BBers achieved striations where those before them didn't...and thus was born the smaller posing trunks.

I have much less problem with the trunks, and more problem with the gyrating, etc that accompanies it....

This is exactly my point: the combination of the gyrating, lustful stares and the trunks becoming g-strings... has made bodybuilding much more like some kind of Chippendales joke than a serious, artistic enterprise.

heres how i see this debate=

guys who are capable of getting shredded glutes = want to keep the g strings and thongs

guys who are incapable of getting shredded glutes = want to go back to old school posing "trunks"

How much respect was that exactly?  ???

If you had never seen those photos would he still be your hero?

lol.... good point... i took human sexualities this semester and one day the teacher was covering a section and supposedly according to her and our book about 80-90% of males all have a penis size within about an inch of each other.. both length and circumference...  but flacid they could look very different in size... but that is evened out because flacid cocks that are small always tend to grow alot when they become erect, and flacid cocks that are big never tend to grow very much when they become erect. kind of interesting.

If I was gay I certainly wouldn't be complaining about smaller trunks.

You'll never see me complaining if women's beach volleyball outfits progressively got smaller.

perhaps if they'd do some local advertising.    all these pro shows seem to limit their ads to the bodybuilding mags.  try advertising in the local weeklies.  try handing out cards in front of local gyms.

Touché  :-[

Don't get me wrong, in the right setting thongs and trashy trunks would be welcome and hot... but on the competition stage?  That's not where I want to see it.

Agreed.  A simple lesson in Marketing 101 would result in a packed stadium at the next BB show, but BB promoters have yet to learn that lesson.  It also helps if you promote the events with the help of gay people who actually live in the area.  The locals know where upcoming shows should be advertised (gyms, newspapers, word of mouth, parties, etc.)

Another and perhaps more important variable is the need to openly embrace your (gay) audience—literally and figuratively.  The gay population in cities like NY, SF, LA, tend to be politically minded.  They are not going to patronize and $upport a show where BBs are homophobic, hostile, or cop an attitude when someone who is gay wants a picture or to cop a feel of a bicep.  I totally understand if a BB is not comfortable with this, but if that is the case do not expect gay patronage.

The gay community has a long memory; we remember our friends and our enemies.  One nasty comment, slur, or bad attitude can erase gay support for years.

Finally, (and this is just my opinion), these shows are far more interesting to bi-curious/closted guys than gay guys.  An out gay guy, assuming he wants it, is already having lots of muscle sex, watching muscle porn, etc. and is not necessarily going to be titillated by BBs prancing around on stage. :D
