The Charles Atlas ad is probably the best-known solicitation of that genre.
But, has anyone ever seen the actual course? I'm curious what it contained.

WWF spoofed the ad in pimping one of their products. I forget what they were even selling, but the ad featured Macho Man. It was around the time that Ico-Pro was on the market, but I don't think that is what the ads marketed.

my kid remembers the ad it was in one of his old wrestling magazines, i'll let you know if he finds it. as far as the atlas course i know it contained exercises pitting one muscle against the other as atlas said when he saw a tiger stretching in the zoo he got the idea for the system.

Just guessing, don't really know:

The reverse loading of plates in the barbell ad might just be a advertising ploy to catch the eye of people. Something different in showing their product.  Probably a lot of competition (as there is today) in the fitness/health business, back in the day. Doubt that the Schmitt company was big time (guessing again) so needed a different approach to sell their stuff. The DB's & BB's, in the ad, do look slick, and kind of cool, compared to a lot of the other older barbell ads, at that time. Would not think anyone is going to workout that way the BB/DB's are shown. Starting with 1 1/4 plates, and working up from that, is defeating the whole purpose of the progressive load idea. But who knows, other crazy stuff out there.

We are still using some Vic Tanny and Paramount plates, where I workout at. Bars break but plates never seem to die.  Those iron shoes (don't know the right name for them) are really  something else.

I got a pair of iron shoes from a martial arts mag. I had a knee op in 1999. I did leg abduction and aduction and it did help me. Never used them again. was good in building the vastus lateralus and medialus. very simple but worked.

Nice!!
Also, just having that anatomy is not enough. There is a very specific way to hit that pose, and it's not easy.
It's impressive, but not something I would aspire to have in the extreme as depicted above.

This site is about old school ads..so keeping it short about rib box expansion.

The cartilage expands between the ribs and the center of the chest, not the rib bones themselves. The average of human cartilage becoming fixed or harden is around 24 to 26 years of age.  After that not much more expansion is possible. Getting serious about pullovers, with heavy breathing compound exercises like squats have increased men's total chest measurements from 2 to 3 inches..and in a somewhat short period of time........if within that younger age group. Probably thousands of men, past and present, have accomplished this.

Pullover's alone (straight or bent arms) can also give a larger rib box, but more dramatic results is with a heavy breathing combo exercise. The moon and half moon benches where used quite a bit back in the day. Along with the regular flat bench.

I made a shitty lat machine that worked ok, and a set of solid dumbells that I still have today.

that t-bar row was the best one I ever used.   but since it was the first one I ever used, I didn't realize how functionally well it was built until long after it was gone.

There's a depressing story behind that poster of Gragam and the tiger, but I can't remember it.

graham actually owned a lion in real life used to take it to bars and around to scare people but that's another story.the story behind the tiger poster is that graham sunk a ton of money into making and distributing the poster and pretty much no one bought it, at a time when he was asked to invest money in gold's gym before it took off.

Wow, and he was by then a former champion? Did he honestly believe that poster would make more money than "a" gym, much less a very popular (at the time) gym?

It must suck knowing you could have owned a share in what became the most famous gym chain ever.

Advertising in the 60s and 70s was always interesting.

nice i probably would have bought some pieces if i didn't live on the other side of the usa. most of my stuff was jubinville, york and ferrigno that's lou's father and brother andy's stuff.

All the stuff you had and still have got the job done. You would have liked pop's equipment. It was well built and built to last. Had you bought a Zuver's Bench or two you would have a piece that most likley was built by me. Not that that means anything.
I can't help but believe that somewhere, in some old gym, or even packed in the back of someone's home garage gym that there is still Zuver's equipment being used today. They probably don't even know that it was built by Zuver. But out of the thousands of bench press we sold back then there must still be a few still around.
I've been looking and asking around for the last couple of years now if anyone has any pieces from The Zuver Line.  So far I've only located one bench press and a small amount of Zuver's weights. I just don't beleave that everything got scrapped.
So if anyone here on GetBig.Com has or know's anybody that has a bench, rack, weights, dumbbell's  Zuver related please contact me.
Thanks
RZ

some nice pieces there, the best bench i had and still have was one i had custom made in the 70's by a co. called gymbatics it still is in great shape, thanks to some duct tape etc. maybe some of your equipment might turn up at yard sales or the play it again chain. i had it made up with a narrow grip to accomidate both an olympic bar and an ez curl bar plus dipping bars at top.

It for sure looks well used.
A little more duck tape and its good to go for another 20 years.
Funny thing about steel, it just doesn't go bad.

he's hanging in there seems to be making improvement, he's down like 80 lbs to 151 but hopefully his strength will come back soon. he's starting comeback number 3 just recently. really  tough year and a half. thanks for asking.
