As you know, I am an outspoken guy and sometimes I don't think things out before I speak (or type!). In my efforts to be honest and keep it real, I have in the past said (or typed!) things that I have since regretted. I would truly like to remain a member of the "Team" at MD because you have the greatest staff (not THAT staff!) and you are a great guy to work with. Well, I would never subscribe to this magazine for a couple of reasons.
They promote known felons and what not (who sell fake steroids) as their
spokespeople. Secondly, anyone who would give a public forum to someone like
Valentino needs to have their head examined. This guy isn't even a bodybuilder.
He's a head-case that needs extreme psychiatric help.
Lastly, the way Steve handled
that situation with Lee was very juvenile. He knew well in advance after Lee joined the
PDI etc. that he was done with Lee. Instead of having the professional courtesy to be
up front he simply ignored Lee for at least a month simply because he didn't want to deal
with it. Then after Lee makes repeated attempts to find out his status via phone calls etc. Steve finally sends him a letter telling him that they were going to "part ways". To top it all off he takes several cheap shots at the end of the letter telling him how "disappointed" he is with Lee's conduct. Well who made Steve God? If Steve would have been up front Lee wouldn't have had to resort to asking for an answer on a public message board numerous times. Would any of you want to do business with someone who continually ignores you? What a joke. And btw..Steve was so busy that he found time to post other responses and so forth on the boards but couldn't manage to give ample attention to Lee's contract.. hmmmmmmm

A true professional would have called Lee back, set up an appointment and had a discussion behind closed doors, and let everything out at the meeting....Lee did what he had to, to get a hold of steve which was not returning calls, it takes but a second to press speedial on your cell and say " Hey Lee I'm busy but we can set up a lunch meeting and go over it, and remember that your contract does not expire till the end of the year so we got plenty of time to discuss this. If Steve would have treated Lee with respect and dignity from the moment Lee called, Lee would not have had to go online and try to get an answer....

All things being equal, why do people still by bodybuilding magazines in general? When I worked at a GNC for a year I read them, but never bought them. Back then the internet and contest coverage online was pretty sparse, however, things have changed a lot since then.
The internet now offers (for FREE) far more in the way of bodybuilding reading than any magazine could. Unlike with magazines, online you can talk/fight with pros, and know they are actually talking/fighting with you unlike the ghost written columns in the mags. Furthermore, any contest results you want you get almost immediately online as opposed to reading about them 2 months later in the magazines.
Why do people buy them? I am just curious. I was also too lazy to start a thread about this, so if I don't get any answers in this one I won't cry too much ;D

First of, I feel sorry for you Lee I like the way you think since I concider myself a stand up guy as well and know just as good how life can get all difficult if your thoung or your fingers are faster than your mind.
But I am also a firm believer that talking the truth or not kissing ass is worth a lot, I think most people do not trust their instincts anymore, if you have the feeling something you do is right or wrong and you really listen your guts....you are mostly correct.
I still going to buy MD and I'm still going to read Flex (we don't have much more here in Dublin, apart from Gay4Pay magazines *Hi Derek Anthony*) I remember somebody before saying that he does not read any BB magazines anymore since the day the Internet has involved to an magnitude were you just don't need them anymore.
The reason I still buy and read them is *convenience* I like to sit in bed reading in MD of Flex, I like to take them to work and have a good read there whenever I have nightshift, simply you leaving will not make me stop buying MD as much as seeing Flex being controlled by the IFBB will not stop me reading it.
Honestly I know how you felt, you need to plan ahead and he let you wait that sucks. And I can imagine how every day you had to wait longer must have made it feel even worse.
I wish you Lee all the best, I hope since you have "fallen out" with MD and Flex (in a way) you will still write some articles or do some photoshots.

The point is..if you have problems with your employee you schedule a meeting with him/her and say it face-to-face. At that point the employee can either make changes to their conduct or resign. You don't simply tell your secretary that if Lee calls ignore it because I'm too busy to deal with it at the moment. Obviously Lee's outspoken behavior has made MD frown upon him. They want access to the IFBB for political and financial reasons and you think they're gonna take a chance and tick off the IFBB to keep Lee on board? No one has a problem with this except the fact that Steve/MD didn't have the balls to just come out and say it.

Furthermore everytime people being asked what they like most they all say: Yeah I read the Rambling Freak first ::)... I personally think it's a bunch of shit and don't get me wrong in a way I think of Greg as rather smart and cool, he has found a way to weasel himself into the Bodybuilding ranks without being a bodybuilder...that alone is pretty cunning.

Actually I think Lee got hosed. I'd guess before he decided to do this PDI thing he asked Blechman if he'd back him, and if his contracts at MD and Twinlabs were safe, and he got the go-ahead. Then, Steve sees which way the wind is blowing, burries the hatchet with AMI at the O, and leaves Lee twisting in the wind.
But, assuming that's all true, Lee certainly didn't help himself by calling Steve out every chance he got for the past two months. Gave Steve the perfect excuse.
Screw Lee. He is a loose cannon. If you spoke to your boss the way Lee did your ass would be out the door without a letter! Bottom line is that Lee is a great bb, but he is a poor excuse for a human being. He is a user and abuser. He will use folks like Steve and his fans to get what he needs then he f*cks them and moves down the road until he finds his next friend/victim.

Steve should make the effort, ALL of the effort. not the other way around. think about ANYTHING else, employees for anything wether it be MBA,NFL whatever or just a convient store. you can't have a good football team without your good players.

Unfortunately it seems people are seperating themselves from him because of the PDI decision. Even though I don't buy BB mags, I won't even open a MD up because they support Valantino. Young kids or naive BB's will see this morons pix and think they need to take drugs to get big arms, then they'll see him on Tyra Banks and see her actually touching his arm as if it's muscle and they will use that to gauge their own success. Sorry but Steve asked Lee if he wanted to have him go to Manion and ask him about coming back to the IFBB. Lee said yes go ahead and see what you can do. It was Steves offer to help, Lee wanted to see what they were going to say but at no time wanted back in the IFBB. You should read what really went down before saying that to someone. I am pretty sure if Lee reads this he will support what I said.

Well, I would never subscribe to this magazine for a couple of reasons.
They promote known felons and what not (who sell fake steroids) as their
spokespeople. Secondly, anyone who would give a public forum to someone like
Valentino needs to have their head examined. This guy isn't even a bodybuilder.
He's a head-case that needs extreme psychiatric help.
Lastly, the way Steve handled
that situation with Lee was very juvenile. He knew well in advance after Lee joined the
PDI etc. that he was done with Lee. Instead of having the professional courtesy to be
up front he simply ignored Lee for at least a month simply because he didn't want to deal
with it. Then after Lee makes repeated attempts to find out his status via phone calls etc. Steve finally sends him a letter telling him that they were going to "part ways". To top it all off he takes several cheap shots at the end of the letter telling him how "disappointed" he is with Lee's conduct. Well who made Steve God? If Steve would have been up front Lee wouldn't have had to resort to asking for an answer on a public message board numerous times. Would any of you want to do business with someone who continually ignores you? What a joke. And btw..Steve was so busy that he found time to post other responses and so forth on the boards but couldn't manage to give ample attention to Lee's contract.. hmmmmmmm

Lee was good for MD and his impact I believe is not to be undervalued. IMO, it will to some extent affect circulation of MD.
I could have picked this happening a while ago. It seemed like key people decisively turned on Lee once the PDI coverage fell out of favour.. for example, the time Steve met with the weiders and they asked.. "why are you (your magazine) against the IFBB". It seems Steve is looking to carry on a Weideresq legacy - now that they are not in competition with each other - not that it is a bad thing.

Don't people want to read from other bodybuilders who know about competing, training, dieting and so forth? Even Lee's detractors (like Bob Chick) will admit he's in the upper echelon of
pro bodybuilders. Yes, he's never won the Olympia but how many current pros have? The fact is
he can go into any PDI show and make the other competitors look like amateurs.
So you have a choice between having a top professional with his own column or having people (known felons) who aren't even professional bodybuilders write for your magazine. Now who do you choose? You go with the known felons as representatives of your magazine. Maybe this wasn't such a bad thing for Lee to be distanced from this magazine after all.

I wouldn't say that about Dave P. . The guy is very very intelligent, went through medical school and is very knowledgeble about bodybuilding. He could not turn pro because of his genetics, but that doesn't mean the guy doesn't know his bodybuilding. I buy MD every month, here in Brazil, as well as Flex magazine. I have too, because I happen to write for a bimonthly magazine here, and the mags and the internet are my source of info. Having said that, if you ask me which one of them I like most , personally, I would have to go with MD. I would like a lot more if Palumbo could expose much more of the knowledge that he has, much more thatn what he does at that little one that he writes. He only writes about cycles and cons, and this is a waste of talent, imo. He should have a bigger spread in the mag, covering every aspect of what's necessary to turn a joe blow into a freak, an excellent bodybuilder, INCLUDING drugs. But something that he could talk in detail about nutrition, carb depleting, carb loading, training stuff and so on.
I like Palumbo. A shame what happened to him, but if he truly distributed the fake GH knowing about that, with the sole purpose of profit, than his jailtime was more thatn deserved. But he payed his debt with society, and he's clean in the house again, for what is worth it. He should be treated with respect.

The term of this year’s contract between MD and Lee expired just exactly the same as the two years before it. 30 days before it was to end, Steve and Lee resigned another agreement for a year. There were no discussions for 2 ½ months leading up to it like Lee felt was necessary this year. The only difference this time is that Lee’s professional decisions leading up to the end of his contract term gave him cause to worry.
Other than that, it transpired just like the two years before, only this time Steve decided not to resign him. There is nothing cold hearted about it. I’m sure Steve would have been warmer toward Lee if Lee hadn’t had a tantrum on line and disrespected him. Lee acted the way he did and got what he deserved. He could have called Steve himself. He has his cell phone number. If it is that important he speak to him, call him. Call his cell ten times a day. I’ve seen Steve answer his cell when Lee was calling. So, I know he’s got the number. If he lost it I know Cara would have given it to him. He could have asked me, I would have given it to him. There was absolutely no reason for Lee to have taken this to the boards. Once he did, all conversations regarding it were off.
Steve would have gotten around to dealing with Lee in plenty of time before his contract ended. Just like in years past. Obviously, Lee understands his business decisions of late have not been very prudent and he was understandably anxious to speak with Steve about his moving forward. There were plenty of communications between Lee and Steve’s office that Steve would get to Lee as soon as he could. Lee lost his patients and aired his personal business on the boards to get everyone’s sympathy. Poor dejected athlete - the underdog – the down trodden – no one called him back. Everyone rally around Lee’s pity pot and cry in it with him. Lee chose his path, he acted as he wished, and he didn’t get his contract renewed. Those are the breaks.

I'll be very very honest with you, I don't think you can do much for him at this stage.
If I would be you and again I don't claim I know about all the politics in the IFBB and your job and such, but If I would be in your position I and again I just say what I would do in my company I would try to meet with Lee find out what he really wants be honest to him and tell him what he realistically can get and what you realistically can do for him.
Make up with him you are his Representative if you like it or not, so do it and risk your neck even if does not pay at first.
I always have the feeling that people like Lee respect honesty even if it means listening to things they don't want to hear even more.

First off, I'm not Lee's representative...I only represent IFBB Pro's.
Secondly, I informed Lee of the rules (not like he didn't know them anyway) and the consequences that would follow...he chose to break them anyway.
Third, If there was a precedent set as to athletes that DIDN'T get suspended for jumping federations...then I would have had a problem with suspending Lee as it would have constituted bias...that's clealy not the case, as anyone in modern history that has violated the rule of competing in a rival federation, has been suspended without question.

I think Lee would be a champ to know personally. That being said he's sort of the type of guy who says stupid things and over reacts at times. I think most people are cool with that and make exceptions but he blew his stack a little early on this contract situation and I'm sure he knows that. I wish people would get off his nuts and stop telling him he's fighting the good fight. In this particular case he's not, he's just acting childish.

People should do what they say. Lee was promised a phone call, he should have gotten one.
BB is a pretty small community with only a few venues. Even though a lot of you appreciate Lee's outspokeness.... the dumbest of you must realize that there's a time and place for everything as well as a manner to conduct oneself. Especially considering Lee's history with the olympia and so on.
It's usually a pretty bad thing to make emotional decisions. Another day or two really wouldn't have made that much difference. If someone really pisses me off (which is rare) taking a few days to think about why I got pissed makes it easier to deal with a person. Often it's my own perception of events or some personal baggage that's been added to the mix. Checking myself usually helps.
As shitty as a letter seems... you're usually required to notify a person (in writing) if their contract isn't being renewed.
I kind of stopped reading Lee's articles. Got tired of reading about the Olympia so often. There was one really great article about bodybuilding being a total waste of time and how he'd be a great doctor if he spent as much energy on that as he did bodybuilding. I'm not quoting him directly but it as a great article and should have put things into perspective for a lot of people.
Here's one that might not have been asked: If there wsn't another contract offer on the table, why was knowing about being re-signed so far in advance necessary? He reads as a pretty emotional guy but not stupid. This escapade essentially gives his next employer more publicity than a small magazine could ever afford and reaches all of his fans for free.
Lastly,
Greggs article is funny as hell to me. I appreciate that he's self-effacing and willing to say a lot of things others won't. There's a level of honesty you don't see very often and I find it refreshing.

Since I deliver them so much web design/business consulting value for $300, I feel job security is never an issue. Most companies want more than $300 for a down payment.

As a second thought, I know some of your accomplishments, and even respect the fact that you reached a position that only a few can aspire: being a pro athlete, even more in the toughest sport in the world, bodybuilding (yes , guys, it's a sport!)
Unfortunately, not everybody can say I'M A PRO BODYBUILDER (hi, Dave!!!), and this is enough reason why we should commend you. But you can't bash the other fans here calling us losers or other names, based solely on desagreements with your opinions, because you could be ready for a reality check: many members here are much more accomplished in life than you. There are people here that are as much skilled at their chosen profession as you are at the one you chose, the only diference is the walk of life they applied. Here on getbig.com, we have lawyers, doctors, teachers, cops, etc.....I went to the law school here in my country and finished it sucessfully, earning my degree and passed at our BAR exam, too. Nowadays I work at our Federal court, and I'm a federal employee, with a secure stability in my job. That means I can only be fired if I commit a crime in the line of duty, to which I am gonna be prosecuted to the full extension of the law. Can you say the same??? At any time he wants, Rus DeLuca can fire your ass without a warning in advance, and you will end up with your dick in your hands.
One thing has to be clear here: you are a pro athlete and i HIGHLY RESPECT THIS FACT. But this is not a bullet proof vest to your actions regarding issues like the IFBB and their zero tolerance stance towards their athletes in other federations, Priest's problems, the undisclosed bias you hold towards issues which the IFBB is at one of the equation's sides, and many other things that I'm too tired to mention.....
And one other thing: I guess one of the reasons people here jump at your neck is because you are too easy a target, and gets pissed very fast....you gotta admit: you are very very funny when you're mad!!!! ;D

We , FANS, the guys that buy the shitty magazines that get shittier by the day, the supplements, the training DVDs, contests DVDs, etc, etc, etc, are only aware of what comes to surface on the media from time to time, in this case media being the boards, some magazines, radio shows and what not. The full details are quite difficult to get a hold of, most of the times, simply because one of the parts involved, almost always the part that fuckued it up try everything under the sun to hide the real facts, generating all this ' he said, she said, they said' bla bla bla.....
So we can only comment about what we GET to know. Now bare with me on this: if only getting to know the shananigans without all their details turns them very fishy, can you imagine if we could get our hands in first hand information? Like when your buddy Kamali won 4th place in Canada, ahead of a flawless Dennis Wolf , in comparison?

I have agreed with your opinions a LOT OF TIMES, like at the IRONMAN 2005 prize money episode, when you and Shawn caused quite the commotion in the hopes to raise the prize money for the competitors. Priest could have done exacly what you suggested...he chose not to.

The one thing you cant do, is choose to break them and then bitch about the consequences of those actions.
I don't agree with the rules 100%, and I regularly challenge those rules by way of submitting proposals to the IFBB at the annual meetings, and using th proper channels.
I've gotten many changes in the last 2 years, and will get many more....working within the system, not being a rebel without a cause and getting nothing accomplished except for being suspended and losing thousands...

From one perspective, Chick is an idealist who works within the system without much avail while Lee is more realistic in taking his stand by breaking away and trying to promote a safe haven for bodybuilding. From another perspective, Lee is an idealist who tries to promote a "healthy" (non oppressive) bodybuilding federation by breaking away while Chick is realistic by working within the system.
The perspectives depend on the outcome or the success of PDI.

He is fine, don't worry. His shows are paid for, the money is there to pay the prize money and even pay airfare, hotel and per diem. Sit back and enjoy the show. And no matter how much I support the PDI to go to New York for a day or two and almost 6,000 miles each way forget it. If I was on the mainland at the time no problem. Hopefully I will be in Europe during the shows there next year. I have to travel allot next year so who knows.

Whats aggravating, is that there is a wealth of knowledge to be tapped from modern day pro BBers and an opportunity via the internet to do something we as young aspiring BBers,could have only dreamed of...and the majority of you waste it on talking shit, making comments about matters you don't know, mocking, making disparaging remarks about their wives and girlfriends, etc, etc...
I would have given anything to have had the opportunity to converse in real time with Arnold, Lou, Franco, Zane, Viator, Coe, Mentzner, Robby, etc....
Perhaps your definition of being a "fan" is vastly different than my own...I'm not looking for people to kiss my ass, or agree with everything I say or do (and neither are the other pro's)...just looking for the respect level that you SAY you have, but post a different tune.
That's your first mistake, Bob... assuming that posters here are "bodybuilding fans". Many (if not most) people came here because they lift and diet to improve and maintain their own physique and health and enjoy talking with others who maintain a similar lifestyle, not because they're into a bunch of over-drugged mutants standing around on a stage in thongs flexing.
I view IFBB pros in much the same way I might view carnival sideshow freaks. The only reason I talk to you at all is because it's so entertaining watching you melt down all over the board every other week. ;D

I don't agree with the rules 100%, and I regularly challenge those rules by way of submitting proposals to the IFBB at the annual meetings, and using th proper channels.
I've gotten many changes in the last 2 years, and will get many more....working within the system, not being a rebel without a cause and getting nothing accomplished except for being suspended and losing thousands...

Fact is my waist was lean as a whistle, my calves were blazing, and when I hit my back bicep pose the audience applauded. I got a long way to get back but being in the junior class competing without steroids or diuretics, I did a pretty good job this time and I get better and better every year. I could go back to the old days but I'm not doing that and folks like me and Mike Morris are going to prove that you can still regulate the stage even when you get off the juice.

Yeah, I was holding way too much water so I had to take the niacin and lock myself into the sauna for a half hour. It wouldn't have been an issue if I took some Lasix but of course I'm doing it naturally now. I intend on never doing that again because what I did to clear out that water was pretty dangerous. It got rid of some of the water but it was simply too late to completely clear it out which is why I looked watery.
