Doesn't always start out like that. That couple who started the go fund me for the homeless vet.. probably had good intentions until they were shocked they raised $400K. Then they started rationalizing how they were helping him by not giving it all to him and subsidizing their lives with it because after all, they were taking care of him. Greed got the best of them and they became the bad guys. Phil probably pawned the bracelet thinking he would get it out of hock before it was missed, then when he was called on it he probably wanted to do the right thing and he did pay $20K towards the bracelet thinking next year he would pay the rest. Then, as things go, expenses come up, maybe he was spending more than he made, poor choices, lack of business smarts.. and he decided the friendship and his honor weren't worth the other $25K. So he thought he would just stall his friend, and eventually the friend would give up. In the end, Phil chose to be a POS instead of following through with his promise and obligation. But and this is no excuse for him just an observation, those people are more common than those who pay their debts no matter what.

Phil was an average college ball player. He had great genetics for bodybuilding. He met with Guidance Counselor Jay Cutler who guided him into pro bodybuilding, because he saw the potential. As Phil has stated before, he has kept in contact with people he knew who became NBA players and had the big money.

As has been stated before, Phil was like a Flex Wheeler with a guidance counselor, but when he didn’t have that guidance, and he came of his own, he faltered. Plus he was always hyped up as the next best thing. His head blew up, like his arms. Add in character flaws, lack of depth in the pro ranks, and you get a recipe for the meltdown we see today.
