I just started golfing last month, it is frustrating at times but it’s very enjoyable. I just need lots and lots of practice.

Could be many things. It starts with your grip

Your hands maybe it'll far in front of your club or your club face is open. Lesson will
Help
And power is involved, you just have to learn how to harness it. I'm 6-2 which helps, but lifting does give me an advantage for
Length. My drives are around 300 but keeping it straight is the key. I sometime play with my 80 year old dad and I hit it 100 yard past at least. But we end up with a similar score. Tin cup attitude I guess. When I was 14 I shot high 80's and now that I'm in my 40's I shoot low 80's. Not much better. But in Canada it's a short season.

I used to play.  There is a "par 3" course owned by Harris County a couple of miles from where I grew up.  It is essentially a begginners course...you can play it with only a 9 iron and a putter.

and to top it off...when I was a preteen, it was illuminated for night play.

The club my dad played was annexed in a Bush Airport expansion.

As far as your swing...a driving range...which is often a fun activity in it's own right.

At the beginning, forget about distance, just go easy and think of your form.

Haven’t played in about 4 years (consistently). Before that I played twice a week and practiced on the off day. Got down to a single digit handicap. Wish I had more time now but still follow it closely. Get a coach.

My favorite sports in order

1. Golf

2. Baseball

3. Football

Bodybuilding isn’t a sport

I was a good golfer years ago (2 handicap). There are things you can do to quickly improve your scores.

#1 is to improve your short game.  Chipping, pitching and putting.  This is numero uno for score reduction.  Golf is a game of minimizing errors.  Even pros hit poor shots but they recover with great short games.

Now to improve your long game you need to have solid fundamentals to reduce not only errors but the severity of the errors (mishits).

To do this requires just a few things.

1) Solid grip.  What ever grip you choose be consistent with it.  Your body will adapt but you need to have a good, basic grip.  Google it or take a lesson on grip.

2) Stance.  This is all important!  You have to aim correctly.  I suggest using a square stance for all shots.  You line your HEELS up parallel to the target line and the clubface ON the target line.  Like railroad tracks.  Most people think they are aiming correctly but they are not.  The eye tricks you.  You must set up the same everytime so your body can learn where to send the ball.

3) The final point is to take your mind out of your swing.  Take your grip,  set up your stance, visualize the ball trajectory, and then TRUST your body to make the swing.  If you hit a bad shot don't panic.  You are going to hit bad shots sometimes.  Just move on to the next shot and repeat your program...grip, stance, visualize, trust.

This also applies to chipping and even putting.  Grip, stance, visualize, trust.  Every time you do this. It doesn't have to take long once you get it down.  Practice it.  Do it when you practice on the range or putting green.  Every time you hit a shot do it.

4) Practice.  You have to practice to get better.  No way around it.  Practice the short game, putting.  Hit balls.  Not just your driver but work through all the clubs in your bag.  If your range bucket has 50 balls, hit 5 with each club starting with the pitching wedge and move down to the long clubs.  Don't hit 50 drivers.  If you play once a week, practice 2 time a week (or more).  Don't forsake your family for golf however.  If you can do a hour of practice twice a week you will see a big improvement (if you practice correctly).

5) DO NOT read golf magazines or any of that stuff on the internet about how to play golf!  If you do this you will constantly be messing with your swing, etc. and it will screw you up.  You will "think too much" and "thinking too much" is what kills you.  You can't play well if you are thinking about mechanics.  Golf is a natural game once you get your "grip, stance, visualize, trust" going.

Read this book however which will explain how to get your mind out of the way so your body can do its job. Of particular importance is the part about the"bounce-hit" in golf.

Actually, golf at a high level requires great timing and coordination.

It doesn't require great physical conditioning but if you walk the course it is physically tiring which affects concentration.

18 holes of golf is a lot of walking.

At a common level, it’s more a game of precision and concentration than anything else. At a higher level, athletic abilities will make a difference. I always enjoyed the practice. Just could never stand the crowd, like the guys who play squash: corporate « Gordon Gekko «  wannabes, lawyers, real estate people, etc...pretty much the people I deal with in my business. No need to be around them when I’m not working.

But seriously, YouTube some golf swings, go to a driving range and hit a dozen or so buckets. If you can learn by then, take you place as golf beta Bitch.

Golf = lots and lots of patience. You'll be frustrated for a looooong time until you figure out what you're doing wrong. Practice practice practice but just remember, just because you get good on the driving range doesn't mean it always translates to the course. In comes course management.

As my friend the golf pro told me as a kid: "Practice doesn't make perfect.  Perfect practice makes perfect."

However, in truth, golf is game full of imperfections.  The best you can do is minimize your errors.  If you mishit you recover with as little risk as possible and score with your short game.

Avoid double and triple bogies.

Enjoy the game, don't beat yourself up.

More addictive than Fortnite.

X2. Had a great teacher and I will always have a decent game thanks to him.

We used to play in HS, 45 holes a day, 3x a week for 3 bucks.

We got decent and could shoot in the 80s, but never got "great" because we didn't take lessons.

Some of those bad habits I developed still stick around today.

While boring it is more amusing to me than football or baseball which I find the two most boring things on the planet.

Ironat this is a great post! Solid insights about the right mindset also.
Good to read that it is normal to struggle at first and that with a lot of practise improvement is possible.
I will put all this mentioned to practise in the next few months.
I have a hard time getting my grip in check. And more than that it seems impossible to keep my mind off the swing (over thinking the movement). I decided to start all over again and I have booked lessons. I will keep you guys updated.

If you can afford it, professional lessons is the best way.

Tell the pro you want to improve your all-round game, not just driving the ball, which is what most people want.  Few people want to learn the short game.

Hopefully, wherever you take lessons has the facilities available so you can learn the short game along with ball striking.

Have fun.

Anybody can play golf but few play it extremely well.  Anybody can play in a weekend slow pitch softball league but very, very few can play baseball in the majors.

Golf at a high level is quite a physical sport.  Go see a pro tournament in person and see how athletic the players are.

Do some have a paunch?  Yes, but so a few major leaguers and a lot of NFL players.

To see a top level pro hit the ball is awe inspiring.  These guys play in a whole other universe from your weekend duffer.

yeah and anybody can throw darts or shoot pool yet few do it at the pro level, they are skills not athletic competitions where you exert energy

physical my ass they putt a few times, hit the ball, and then they sit their fat ass on the cart to go after the ball

you want to compare that to hitting or fielding a baseball traveling at least 95 mph, or blocking and tackling super large athletic and violent men ???

Nice, Trey Taco.

I don't play anymore either.  Tore my meniscus in my right knee years ago...can't push off on it.  Not worth hurting myself again.

Sold clubs.  Kept my driver for sentimental reasons.

Had a dream awhile back I was playing golf in it.  A good feeling.

Solid hybrid golfer/bodybuider physique. Big without being overly big. Enough muscle that says hey I lift and take it pretty serious, but I’m not out on the range trying to show off.

Side bar
I don't believe in the handicap system at all. it doesnt tell anyone how good you are. cuz that shit goes out the window when you are playing in  tournament (strokes or match play) get the fuck out of here with that nonsense.

tournament play is all that matters  - did you place or not?

it messes with my elbows and not i hate elbow pain

Played in high school and then just for fun.

i know play 1x-2x a year.

i played competitive as a young kid.  - worked at golf course, dated a golfer, played in tourneys every week (AJGA) when i was 18 i didnt make it to the finals of the us jr amateur and hung it up at 18.  my clubs still scream 1999-2002 era. PING TISI driver lol and Ping eye clubs

pretty much golf from tv, to golf talk with my father, to the chic i dated. i was golf 24-7. i am glad - great chapter in my life.

i no longer play it. mens classic bbing is my new sick adventure -

my swing is gorgeous since i started at a young age.

to be good at golf - it is years and get lessons

Could you have made it as a pro if you continued to golf?
Would love to see you golf in a shiny thong brosph.

assuming i continued on full golf retard mode (didnt go to a university, worked at a course, lived with other golfers played in tourneys every week and continued golf 24/7 for years) i eventually think i would have been on some semi pro tour (nike tour back in the day or Canadian tour etc) and few small events. you can have a long career as a golfer - just dont get married

also golf life is critical to making it. dont try to have a 9-5 and be a golfer. good luck. working at a course gets you free golf, free range time and you are surrounded by it 24-7. ecosystem

its a grind and the more you do it, the better you get. most golfers just give it up after a while. i decided and i am glad i attended a 4 year university vs continued the golf life

i am a big believer in different chapters in your life is what life interesting. golf was my life for about 6-7 years (100% golf came first)  glad i i did it and glad i had success and glad it was part of  my life vs my whole life.

i live in the golf capital of the US (scottsdale AZ) and used to play with my father 2x a year now his health is failing so i really dont play much at all

Update:

Tonight I had a lesson (30 minutes) and did some practice afterwards (30 minutes).
During the lesson (basic swing 101) I made some improvements by making sure my left shoulder was kept a bit higher compared to my right shoulder. I also managed to rotate a bit more instead of keeping my hips in one place. I had my hopes up!

But after the lesson I practiced some more and all improvements when down the drain at once. I did not manage to make one good swing. I ended up frustrated I could not emulate the improvement. Next time take a 30 minutes brake between lesson and practice?

Kill me now!!

I know you advised this before.
Very difficult to stop overthinking the mechanics.
I will focus on that mentality more. Thanx.

How much time between practise sessions?

How much time between practise sessions?

Practice if you want to.

Don't overthink it.

Have fun.  Don't turn it into work.

Practice the short game as much as possible.  Chipping, pitching, putting.  That's where you will shave the most strokes off your game.  Want to break 100 or 90?  The short game is what will get you there.

Just keep the ball reasonably in play off the tee and to the green and then chip, pitch and putt.  Unless you are a fanatic, spending hours on your long game, you will likely hit many off target shots.  So you must have a good short game.  Even the PGA pros mishit shots all the time.

What I used to do to practice chipping is take my wedge and putter and one ball, toss it down off the green and chip it to the hole.  Putt it into the hole.  Toss it in a different spot, repeat.  Great for developing your touch around the green.  Hopefully you have someplace to do this.  Not all places allow this.

Obviously have a consistent chipping technique.  Get proficient with your pitching wedge.  Master the wedge and putter.

Keep your head down and don't try to kill the ball. Half the time it's that.

I golf caddied for 20 years for supplemental income. If you know golf and establish yourself at a CC it's a great side job.

You put too much pressure on yourself.

Did you read the book I mentioned early on?

It's in most public libraries.  "The Inner Game of Golf."
