For the side tricep pose, is it necessary to hold your arms behind your back or can you keep one arm straight down?

Theres no rule and I dont think Haney ever touched his arm while doing the side tricep. Its actually physically impossible for some people, you need to life your head though and I think it would be better for you not to tough your other arm its making you all scrunched.

It is hard for me to get in that position plus it makes it really difficult to hold a vaccuum.

During that pose, judges should also be looking at abs, calves, biceps (femoris) and serratus, hence the angle of that pose.

The judges aren't just looking at your triceps in that pose.  I think you should hold it where you can show all of your features the best.  For me, my arms are at my side and I grab my fingers and press my arm down and against my shoulder/side. And like Princess L said show your calves, abs and legs.

Personally I think it looks better when you reach around with your other hand to clasp your fingers.  I also think this is an easy way for you to "cheat" and squish your tricep up against your lat to make it look better if it's a weak bodypart.

I like the way Dorian used to do a side tricep - arm straight as possible - just looks better.

Kevin Levrone always just used to stick one arm straight down. I never liked that...

its not really a triceps pose, but an upper body pose. and you should be squeezing down on your legs , making your quads pop up and your hams hang down...with your towns dug in the ground so your calf is striated and lfex as well,,,
