And this is hardly a "fine" (as in a traffic ticket, today). This is a major financial blow, perhaps the equivalent of a six or seven-figure financial settlement today.

Plus, the verses states, "if any mischief follow", meaning further complications due to that miscarriage DO NOT have to be immediate. If it's determined that such "mischief" is due to that miscarriage, the offender pays a heavier toll (up to HIS LIFE).

Said another way, the "fine" is a minimum punishment. The max punishment is that "fine" and DEATH!!!
