I like the beaches and waters of Playa Del Carmen Mexico but I'm not happy with having no real police protection and having to watch people put gas in your car so they don't rip you off. I am attracted to the constant temperatures of southern California but state taxes and high cost of rent is a put off. Florida has high humidity and unless you get down south, cold winters. Where would you live if you liked turquoise waters and reasonable living if you had to live on 8k a month?

In Thunder Bay, Canada.

My suggestion to anyone where rent is HIGH and property is LOW is to get into renting houses.  You can pick up houses in Thunder Bay for around $100,000 still, and easily get $1,250 in monthly rent [with utilities being paid for by the tenant].

Also, Thunder Bay has a very low cost of living, and very clear seasons.  I love the freezing winter.  It's nice to just stay inside during the winter.  I think it helps me compartmentalize my life, and just not think about how I schedule what I do over the course of the year.  Big city life is not for me.

Sint Maarten. Large enough airport to be pretty close to anywhere in the states relatively quick. Great food and people. That's if you're looking for out of America but within close proximity.

I had relatives, and a few friends that settled in the Hilton Head area of SC, and they love it. Cost of living was good to great compared to the North East, weather was nice, and crime wasn't bad.

I do note that there is a lot of expansion going on it seems.

Also what's cold to you?

Have you thought about Aquidneck Island?  I would love to live there.  You really need to zoom into it on a map of the USA to get a grasp of how small it is.  Yet it is only 90 minutes from Boston, and has two McDonald's.  ;D

I honestly think that anyone who lives here would have a much better sense of just how vast the USA is.  We all roughly know how big our city is, but comparing it to the size of our country is another matter...at least for those of us in large countries, especially Canada or the USA.

Just look at this...and it has a healthy population size, sitting at just over 60,000, divided among three towns.  8)

Then you wouldn't like the -40F nights here in Thunder Bay, Canada.  ;D

I use -40F as a reference because it is equal to -40C, so it is easy to translate this for both Americans and Canadians.

I think we had something like 10+ nights around -40F in Thunder Bay, Canada last month and this month.  It is very cold - dangerously cold.  You could die in an hour if not properly dressed.  And yet people still risk it.  Women still walk to bars with a dress on to save $2 on coat check.  You would almost think a city ordinance [or whatever the Canadian equivalent is - municipal bylaw?] on that in Thunder Bay, Canada.

NOT that I would support that kind of Nanny State BS that happens way too often in Canada - I'm more just surprised none of our politicians have done that yet, here in Thunder Bay, Canada.

Arkansas and Central Texas gets too cold for us in the winter. I think that place would be worse.

 ;D ;D ;D

My friend's dad was a cab driver, but it was sort of a secret he kept only to his family here in Thunder Bay, Canada.

Next thing you know, my friend came back after teaching English in South Korea, and started driving cab.  He said his dad was hiding a goldmine from him, and he was making $36,000 CAD a year as soon as he started driving cab [which is probably like $28,000 USD, but is a lot of money in socialist Canada, especially for a young man in Thunder Bay without an actual career].

That gives you a perspective of how cheap things are here - and how poor we are here, relative to big American cities - or even big Canadian cities.  Yet remarkably, I don't see too many of my friends getting into slum-lording.  I have no idea why.  It can be a lot of headaches, but I see no better option - not in Thunder Bay, at least.  And my roots are here, so I would rather stay here.  If not for renting houses, I wouldn't be able to live here.  I would have to move to a big city, and I would rather not do that.

So I was just saying for anyone who doesn't know how lucrative renting can be, they should look into it if they are from an area with cheap real estate...places like...wait for it...

...

THUNDER BAY, CANADA.  :D

 ;D ;D ;D

NOTE: WOW, I actually converted that CAD figure correctly to USD...the Canadian dollar must be high lately.  $36,000 CAD has been under $23,000 USD before.  :o

I'm kind of looking for a tropical climate.

The moral of the story is this:

Do you have $100,000 USD in savings?

Move to Canada, and you will be an instant millionaire.  8)

Just kidding...things aren't that bad here...yet.  :-\

When I was doing an extended vacation in Playa Del Carmen Mexico I met so many Canadians who had moved down there, apparently it is a haven for Canadians escaping the weather

Arizona ??

turqouise waters would be hard to find. I guess the parameters would be a place near the ocean but not like Galveston Texas with muddy ocean water.

When I was doing an extended vacation in Playa Del Carmen Mexico I met so many Canadians who had moved down there, apparently it is a haven for Canadians escaping the weather

I believe that...as is Arizona, from what I understand.

I can assure you, I am NOT an adapted Canadian, in terms of the extreme cold.  I essentially hibernate all winter to manage my autism.  It's sort of how Kevin Levrone approached bodybuilding - give every inch for PART of the year...then take a LONG time off.  Ronnie Coleman used to also take 3-4 months off after the Mr. Olympia contest, once he became a multiple winner, and could afford to focus solely on the Olympia.

Basically, I sit inside on Getbig during the cold months.  Once I can drive my car without warming it up for ten minutes, I start getting back to the real world, or get the energy to do more things outside of my house - such as renovations on my townhouses.

Whoa...check out this.  I guess I never really looked into the line "There once was a man from Nantucket".  It turns out this is an island in Massachusetts!  Wow...talk about quaint and beautiful.  I love islands, lol.  As long as they are in proximity to a Wal-Mart, I figure they are fine.

One wonders if Getbig's own "Wes" has been to this quaint little island:
