Unfortunately Japan was not going to unconditionally surrender under conventional means. If not for the bombs the allies would have had to invade the japanese mainland. It would have been very, very ugly. As it is Japan didn't surrender after Hiroshima was bombed. They very unwisely waited until we bombed Nagasaki. They were given ample time to surrender after the first bomb.
