Introducing and starting over
« on: March 09, 2006, 11:10:26 AM »
I used to be serious with lifting a few years ago but I injured my knee and quit after that. Now I'm getting back into it and I've been lifting for a month now. Luckily, from previous experience, I know how to properly do the exercises.

Here I am @ 225lbs

Here I am, 3 weeks later, @ 220lbs

My goal right now is cutting. I have a lot of work ahead of me but I'm in it for the long haul this time. I've joined other fitness & bodybuilding boards and found no support there. A lot of places seem to not register that everyone has to start somewhere and that changes can happen in time.

I hope to make friends with you guys. Cheers.

Christ...if this is a joke, congratulations...you got me.  If not, then here is my advice.  Prepare yourself for an avalanche of flaming, hating, roasting and lambasting.  If you can tolerate it, you might pick up a few good tips here and there.  The trick is to figure out which board memebers are the actual body builders, and which are the frustrated wannabe comedy writers.  Good luck...

No joke. I used to be in quite good shape until I hurt my knee and then everything went to shit. I gained like 80lbs in a year from sitting around and eating like a pig.

I can tolerate it the abuse. I like when people are supportive but I do realize that's this is the internet and people will take as many cheap shots as possible. Plus, this forum has a sex board with porn.

Work on your cardio, up your protein intake and lower the carbs you eat, drink water most of the time.  I liked to drink powerade or gatorade following a workout.  Eat right, cardio, and get good rest and you'll be on the right track.  I'm not going to flame anybody, your man enough to post your pick and ask for honest advice.  Hell we all gotta start somewhere!

Thanks dude. I've been doing all that and have lost 6lbs in 3 weeks. I think that's good progress for me. I'd love to get a hold of a Marines boot camp training schedule. Those guys go through hell and come out ripped.

Fair play for posting those pics... I know I wouldn't have!

Anyway, here's my advice. If you want to lose fat and eventually get big you need to start focusing on the big compound movements:
Squats
Deadlift
Bent Row
Chins
Chest Press
Dips
...there's more but I'm sure you get the point.
At this stage I don't know how often you are training (?), so I'll assume it's 3x a week. I'd advise you to do an upper body / lower body split, and train with weights every session. Once you have done your weights, get on a CV machine - x-trainer and rower are good for quick fat burning - and do a MINIMUM of 20 minutes.
By weight training first, you'll deplete all your muscles glycogen (hopefully) - then when you move onto the CV, you'll force your body to burn fat stores.
3x a week is an assumption, 4-5 would be better. Those "rivers of fat" are gonna take some shifting!
As Ranger said, cut the carbs, up the protein and fill yourself up on water - by the looks of things, you've got quite an appetite

Lol, alright dude, at first i thought you were a troll, but anyways...
I won't give negative comments, you probably know yourself that it aint looking good.
Time to get yourself in shape. It'll take long, just stay focussed and motivated.
Read up about nutrition and training, and shed some fat first.

Looks like you don't have a good structure, but you can work with it. It's gonna take a lot of time and
mental toughness. One step at a time.

Good luck.

ok, where to start?...

Firstly, fu ck splitting your body parts at this stage. You need to focus more on shedding some pounds (IMO). Like I said, upper / lower split. The exercises are fine, but your sets and reps are all wrong. You really need to lower the number of sets and increase reps - 2 x 15-20 would be better for each exercise. I know you won't put loads of muscle on doing this, but you can develop perfect technique and focus whilst using the lower weights.
You need to keep rest periods to a minimum, no more than 30 seconds. You should be sweating your bollock s off before you go anywhere near the bike.
I see you are training 4x a week with 2 lots of cardio a day... I'll believe you about the cardio... just.
As i said before, do all cardio after your weights. If you want to do cardio on your off days too, that's fine, but keep it low intensity.
Assuming you do a 4 day, upper lower split with 30 mins cardio each session, you'll drop the fat quick. Shit, your body doesn't want to carry all that mush about!
Once your BF% is within acceptable limits -  around 15%, then you can up the weights and lower the reps.
Obviously, this is how I would approach your situation. You and others might not agree, but one thing's for sure... you won't look any worse!
If you have any questions let me know.
Remember, the training is only half the battle - get your nutrition sorted, any you'll find it much easier.
ask questions, read, learn, train, eat well and grow - simple as that

gook luck

Hey, congrats on starting up.  Lots of cardio- intervals are good for us chubby guys without a lot of stamina.  ECA if you're not on prozac or zoloft or another SSRI.  watch carbs at night, and get a tan... goes a long way.  good luck!
