Alot of Caribbean countries and Latin American countries where the ethnicity is hispanic but the races are a mixture of african, european and native indian, there is still a strong value placed on having lighter skin. Blacks in the states have placed this stigma on themselves too, but to the same extent as in the islands and south of the equator. It does not just stop at skin tone either, the texture and grade of their hair is always of great importance.

So you take two extreme examples, there are plenty of feminine and "delicate" black women. Also, Grace Jones had good facial genetics...she was just odd, and thin.

Well, Dominicans are known as the black people who don't want to be black. Add the fact about the stigma of looking of African descent and brown skinned in Latin America, you have a complex self hatred issue. And also what hipolito said.

Dominicans are on an island that is divided by two countries, Haiti, They speak French creole, and PatuA ) and Dominicans that speak Spanish..... to understand that hatred you have to go back in time .... in the 1800's Haitians invaded Dominican side and took over for 22 years ...... they literally "ate" their entire side of the island and turn it in to a devastated zone and they were doing pretty much the same with the other side (dominican) the time they were in charge .....
Also, Haiti was the first black nation" of the world and because of they way they became 'Independent " France and the rest of the world closed their door on them that's why Haiti is the poorest country in the hemisphere since day one , so that was a "problem" our fellows Dominicans inherited by default for being in the same land .

1 - Just days after winning the World Series Liban HERNANDEZ ( sp? ) was given a car key at a fancy hotel entrance to park a car. The guy apologized to HERNANDEZ but you could see the disappointment in the pitcher's eyes.
2- Ron Washington ( former Rangers manager) was asked by hotel personal to leave the area he was standing at because that was reserved for Texas Rangers personal and there were valuable gear/ equipments waiting to b picked up. :'(
3- Sammy Sosa used to throw a HUGE Bday party at his home with celebrities from all walks of life.
At one point of the party , Sammy was waiting for Salma Hayek to welcome her to his mansion and she just walked by him like almost avoiding him. someone told her " hey that's the Bday boy u just walked by lol " she was kind of embarrassed and said : " sorry I didn't know you were ............

And that's when the mental breakdown of the low self esteem having Lil Kim started. After Biggie died, came the weight gain, and theme the breast implants, and the starting to turn herself into a version of Faith Evans. Next it was being friends with spam Anderson (guest starring in Anderson's VIP show) and then the blonde hair started to show up. Next up was the massive plastic surgery and skin bleaching. Turning herself into something looking Asian or Latina.
Niki Minaj, another New Yorker, was skinny, grew up in a home with a lot of fighting, sad that she often came up with various stories of an alternate life. She got a ton of work done, especially her backside and breasts, and wears tons of colorful wigs. She made a name for herself as being either a lesbian or bi, and then went full tilt into vamp female rapper, which is the same as Lil Kim.
Notice how both her and Lil Kim (as well as Foxxy Brown) come from NYC, both are brown skinned females, both only seem to only play on their sexuality, both have talked about self esteem issues, both have gotten major work done.
And Lupita is fine.
