Scrimmage tonight.

League shifted some rules this year, dropping the arc from 6-10 to 3-10, going full USSSA.   Also made the basepaths 70 ft, which I don't care for.

I've run into this too.  Shaved bats, rolled bats, illegal bats re-painted.   People can be assholes.   The bats are too dangerous now.  We play USSSA, but limit the bats to ASA.

Taking a break this season for the first time in nearly ten years.  They started to suck me in last year.  Many of my teammates play four or five times a week.  I only officially played on one team, but they started asking me to play during the week.  Got a little out of hand.  It's a friggin religion.

We had a new guy join the team who is 48 years old.

He hit 2 balls over 370 ft, and one about 350.

These are legit, too.  We have a 300 ft fence with a fifty foot high net like the ones they use at golf driving ranges.  One of his shots went through the net about 10 feet from the top, so you could see where it landed.

Pretty impressive.

I've heard about those in NJ.  Is the ball called a kapoc?

I played in Chicago once with the 16 inch ball they use and no gloves.  Now that sucked.

I run into the same problem on fenced fields.  Our fences are anywhere from 280 in left to 310 in right center.  The fence is 10 ft high, with golf-range-style nets above.  The HR line is 25 feet up.  I hit the fence due to line drive type stuff, but I've yet to put one over in 3 years.

On open fields, those line drives are home runs.

Agreed.  I've played with a few who played college ball and they were the real deal.

I played fast pitch for a long time before I moved to the suburbs.  It's a dying art for men, so occasionally they would have to import a girl.  They didn't throw as hard, but they pitched.   Much more off-speed, cutters, drops.....

We dropped the first game 28-25.

Damn thats alot of runs!

It was insane.  We have a 3 HR limit, after that it's an out.  280-310 ft, 10ft high fence, 25-30 ft HR line on the fence.

In the second game, all runs were pretty legit.  Just line drives, hard hit grouders, and bullets high off the fence.

The league switched to USSSA pitching, which lowered the arc to 3-10 ft.  Too easy to hit.

We have the same 3 hr run rule.2 fields are 290 with a 15 ft fence no hr line and one field is 310 with a 15ft fence.

....damn thats a low arc we are 12 feet.

Actually, I really like those games. You're on the field the whole time, so your batting gets really tight. And, because you're playing without a rover, you're flying all over the outfield diving for outlandish stuff. 'Course, you mostly lose those games...but when you win...it's heaven.   :)

I don't think we'll end up making that trip, but who knows?

The one I regret missing 10 years ago was when our team got a bid to the Men's Modified nationals.  I can only imagine how good the pitching would have been.

Now, I'm about 5 years removed from any fast pitch.  There's no leagues locally, and I can't drive an hour on a weeknight any more.

Singles seem to win a lot more games.

But, it means you're probably not getting a full extension or turning your top hand over.  Try taking one armed swings with your back hand, mimmicking trying to "throw" the bat through the ball.  Or, if you feel comfortable, drop two fingers off the end of the bat.

Or just stop being a pussy and hit the fucking ball.

To make matters worse, a lefty went opposite field to start the game, I did a hook slide and got it on one hop.  Thing, is, the ground was so dry i ripped up the outer part of my right leg again for the 1000th time.

Soooo....my local vitamin shop was out of my usual vitamin packs.they gave me another brand and said "it's the same stuff"....yeah right,it had a fat burner with caffeine in it.did I mention I've never had a cup of coffee in my life? started taking them Thurs.felt weird at dinner and couldn't sleep.
Fri I get to the game and warm up,stretch and throw, no problem.single my first time up.next batter singles to the right side so I go to third.that was it I was a mess.couldn't catch my breath, absolutely drenched in sweat, dizzy and delirious.
played 5 innings in right.one inning I didn't even come back to the bench, just walked off to the side.caught the last two innings and had problems standing up to throw the ball back to the pitcher.
of course I had to lead off the seventh with us down by 2.singled and ended scoring the winning run somehow.

......couldn't play the second game, didn't even finish two beers after the games.just water and Gatorade.

......I think I was either 3-4 or 4-5.

I sold my Miken years ago, 'cause I couldn't use it in the league. It was okay, tho, as I never really got a comfortable feel for it, if you know what I mean. In the bag is an F4, and my trusty search and destroy PST. I try some of the fancy bats at tourneys, but I usually come back to these two.

We go to some out-of-town tourneys and I've seen the pitcher's all duded up like you say, but those guys are all tanks and can really slam the ball, so I see why they sometimes need it. Those teams take their ball seriously and don't frequent the beer tent like we do.   ;D

Yup. I'm playing in a regular softball/lob ball  league, and I've joined an over-35s, just to see what's what. Lot's of weekend tourneys, as well.

Best of luck to ya! Have fun.

I played fast pitch for years - bunting, stealing, etc....but since I'm in the suburbs now I'd have to drive 30-40 miles to play.  Just doesn't work, so I play in a 3-10 arc industrial league, and a Sunday morning 6-15 league.

No physical issues, just time constraints.  Work/home makes it difficult to commit to that type of commute for a game.

Ah, that's real baseball. Kudos. Wouldn't even think about it; I just don't have the speed. Was a game at a softball tourney years back, and I asked the guy besides me who we watching play center field, as he was just was just flat out catching anything in the air. True.   What's amazing is that the guy you were watching was friggin' amazing, yet still not able to play at the MLB level (guessing).   The talent level is completely misunderstood - only 600 good enough out of a pool of 500M+ to be playing at any given time.

Ha! That is exactly what I said to the guy. And I then extrapolated where that would put players like us in the baseball food chain. To the beer tent!       ;D

And that's what most people watching MLB baseball on tv don't get. Those guys make a hard game look easy, when it is far from it, and let's not forget years of practice, and an elite athletic pool.

The USSSA league I play in is now providing bats for every team to use.    12 bats, 3 brands / 4 varying weights.

We shall see if the 400+ blasts I've seen are a thing of the past.

Same here but only Easton Synergys 1-26oz,1-27oz,and 2-28oz.

....all will be dead 3/4's through the season :(

Yes! Synergys is one, Stealth the other, don't know the third.  I did very well with a Synergy last year - bat was balanced, not end heavy, which I like for control.

First game report from 2 other teams is that the bats were jacked.   Our filed averages about 285, (310 for me in RC  >:() ) but the fences on the 285 are 10 feet high, with about 50 more feet of driving range net above that.  The HR stripe is 35 feet up, so it's a good shot.  But I've seen shots clear the entire net (50 ft) at the 300 ft mark, so those are absolute bombs.

Tried a Synergy at a tourney a couple of years ago. It was livid orange and looked like NASA put it together. Stunning. Took a swing and realized the owner farked up a re-grip. Went back to my bats.

So we had Synergy (white)/ Stealth and an end loaded Synergy (green).    26-29 oz.

I used the balanced Synergy, 27 oz,  and it was insane.  I hit 4 out last year all season.  Last night hit 3 in my first four AB, although one was called foul (over foul pole, but close) and one was right after we had reached our limit so it was an out.  I'm not an HR hitter - more line drives and placement, with the occasional bomb.  Granted, there was a straight wind to CF and it was chilly, but these bats seemed really good.

All of the line drives in the OF were knuckling back and forth, nothing felt routine.   I played about 10 feet in front of the fence, out of sheer concern for my own well being.

lol.  Yeah there's some guys in that league that wouldn't pass, I can assure you.

It was more a case of really good conditions.  What also helps me is I have 6-15 arc on Sun mornings, followed by 3-10 the next day in that league.   So much easier to hit.

Left work at 4 so I could get to the six o'clock double header.   Turns out my dumb ass didn't look at the schedule and we had the 8 o'clock games.    Hung around for almost two hours, then the rain started pouring at quarter of 8 and we got cancelled.

Nope, it's a big problem, which is why our league provides bats now.

Bats were being "shaved" to make the walls thinner, or illegal bats were getting 300 paint jobs to make them appear legal.

My industrial league has old guys who keep stats and got someone to launch a website.   It actually calcs OBP/OPS/SLG etc.....   You can click on a name and it shows you a breakdown by game for any player.   Completely unexpected and very cool.

Of course, now that this is out there, it will now lead to irrational agitation when a line drive that nicks the second baseman's outstetched glove is ruled an error, or when two of your doubles get put in as singles.   Just speculating what might happen, of course.   ;D

IMO, you either have the bat speed or you don't.

My local place has 60mph machine, but its like 20 feet away. So to pump my ego i always remind myself that since it so close, its the equivalent of hitting a 90mph fb pitch from 60ft out. Lol. Or not.

Bottom of the last inning tied, first and third, one out.   In my mind, there is nothing I could do to not get the run in.

Slightly outside pitch, easy, opposite field swing, banana line drive glides over the LF's head, one hops the fence...game over....

.....errrr except I got called out for stepping in front of the plate.

Fortunately we won in the next two AB.

Bounced from tourney; lost our first two games. Just too many defensive errors. Batting was okay.

Negative: Came screaming around second going for third, and fell down like a piece of furniture. Had to scramble  back to second, all farked up.

Positive: Saw our center fielder field a ball at the fence, wheel around, and gun a dead strike to home plate to nail the guy by 10.' Never seen a throw like that. Fark me.

Well, you throw together a team for a tourney and sometimes it works...most times it falters with the weaker players. I lost count on how many I fielded and sent on to the infield only to see the ball get thrown to the wrong bag or over/poorly thrown. I just turn around and get set for the next batter. Cripes. That sucks. Is that gonna lay you out for long? 3 weeks of no games and now this nonsense.  Play catcher, 1st?   :-\

Aside: Couple games ago, a bud shot me the bat he just popped up with. Problem was the sun was in my eyes - barrel came down right on my big toe. Next day, it looked like Fred Flintstone's.    ;D

Hopefully good to go Tuesday...battle of 2 undefeated...the guy playing my outfield spot can hit but he's so slow it looks like he's running in mud when he's chasing a fly.

I'm on 4 a day.   Playing through two ac joint separations.

I don't feel it too much playing, but turning the wheel of a car and if I sleep on either the wrong way......ouch.

We play one of the top three teams in the state of RI next week.  Looking forward to the challenge, but expecting to get swept.

We have to be perfect and they have to make mistakes.  They usually just place the ball where they want it, and use their HRs when the bases get full (3 HR limit per game).

We have a 14 team league, where 4-5 are "A" travel/tourney teams.  We are the best of the next level.  We have beaten a bunch of the A teams, but this one is like an A+, if that makes any sense.

We play in the weaker division but as soon as the makups are over that will change...the city champ usually comes from that side....our last game we had other teams come to watch us.

Lost our first game of the year last night.gave up 9 in the first and could never catch up.
I haven't swung a bat in 5 weeks....first time up a weak grounder to the pitcher....second time up I hit a bomb.the right center took two steps then watched go out....third time up a pop up to the second baseman.

we run ruled the team in the second game.I sat it out and had a six pack down before the game was over :)

Nice work on the bomb, Calvin.

So, we actaull beat that tourney team last night in the first game.  They, for some reason, burned all their HRs in the first two innings, and one was a solo shot.  We trailed 10-2 after 2 but were able to shut them down as some of their line drives found our gloves.  Turning point in the 4th we scored 6 with two outs to go up 15-10, and won 19-11.

Then, I guess they woke up and hit lasers all over the field, with one measured 400 ft bomb, and we were mercied 24-11 after 15.   All in all, a big win for us.

Won last night against a sleeping Miken-sponsored 'SPIN' team. We played well, no real mistakes, and they were complacent and popped them up a lot, and weren't aggressive on the base paths.  I am under no illusions, tho -ie. if they wanted to get really serious, the outcome might be very different. Fun game, and they're all good people.

It's always nice to beat a sponsored team.   How far are your fences, or do you play without them?

Two of our ballparks have the standard field distance and set-up, but we do play the occasional game on a field behind a schoolhouse, and that field can't be more than 200-10. I remember, years back, being in right, and watching at least 5 balls sail over my head. At one point, I just sat down with my glove beside me. Not much else I could do.   ;D

Beat another "A" team last night in the first game.

Second game, down one, top 7 one on and the guy at the end of the order hits into a double play.  Our leadoff hitter then lined out to end it.  I was on deck, and getting totally jazzed to tie the game or put us up.   It's like blue balls when the last out happens.

Probably turning over too much.   Make sure your middle knuckles line up.  Many who try this feel like their top hand should be more close, as this forces the palm to face forward, but it's correct.  Give it a shot.

I've found a lot of hitters think that, but are lining up the wrong ones.  They have their top hand's  second "door knocking" knuckles lining up with their bottom hand's third (punching) knuckles.

Ask someone to make a batting grip without a bat.  They almost always do this.

Yet another loss. Hitting well, so that massages the ego a bit. Lob ball tourney this weekend. Should be interesting as I haven't seen a lobbed ball in a year.  Nothing like being at the plate with the count already 1-1 and taking that first huge swing-and-a miss to get you gripping your bat too tightly for maybe your last pitch.   ;D

Lob ball is similar to slo-pitch, but instead of the ball crossing the plate for a strike it must hit a 2' x 3' piece of wood/material. Takes a bit of getting used to, especially if the ball is raining down on you from 20-30 feet. Like a regular game, but with bigger spikes in ugliness.  ;D

Ok.   Lob ball is what we'd call Unlimited Arc.   I've also been in tourneys where they use a mat which is the same function as the wood.   We voted the mat into one of our leagues in the offseason, and it was great.  So they overturned it mid year.

The mat really makes bad strike calls impossible, and makes hit so much easier to hit, IMO.

Ditto. And I've never understood the guys who give the pitcher a bye on the first pitch -ie. they won't swing. See that at tourneys a lot. I'm a tad impatient at the plate, and more often than not, I find the first pitch is usually somewhere around the pipe. If it looks half-decent I'm taking a nice cut.

Agreed - these are 15mph pitches - just hit them if they're where you want them, regardless of count.

Unless it's a league where we start with a 1-1 count, it's really rare for me to have two strikes.  It means I've done something wrong.  Although there are times I'll force it opposite field foul just to keep the OF honest.  I get the over shift sometimes.

Like 3 days maybe.  I've been blitzed and could still generate a base hit in slow pitch.  Perhaps in Canada they use a ping-pong filled with sand?

I've been standing to deep in the batters box.
we're like the Yankees.our second baseman just took a cortisone shot in his wrist, left center pulled his hammy, and our catcher is out with a bad back.

Just found out we've got a birthday this weekend to celebrate, so we're gonna try to hit the Jays/Yankees game on our way back from the tourney. Beer. Lotta beer.

Well, another tourney and more losses. Played fine, but the hyped big hitters we were supposed to play with all turned out to be duds. Oh sure, they had the expensive bats, but getting on base seemed to be a problem. Grrr. To the plus, beer tent was pretty good, and it was nice to see the Jays beat the Yanks, for once. Highlights were Jeter's 3-4 and Davis' amazing homerun-robbing catch.

Fark
Waiting around before the Sat afternoon game having some beers listening to our new SS tell our 1st how he throws really, really hard but to be ready because he's deadly accurate. First play he gets the ball he bumbles the pick-up and rifles the ball over the right field fence. 1st is, like, WTF!? The rest of us just walk back to position.   :-X       ;D

our  3rd baseman played ss and couldnt make a clean throw to first...hell,I think he threw one ball into Long Island sound :-\,we also ended 3 innings by getting thrown out running the bases ::)

scored 25 runs and lost :(

....moved up in the batters box....3-3 with two home runs :)

Simple as it sounds, just moving up in the batters box.
I was so deep in the box that every strike seemed low and I was reaching and either popping it up or hitting ground balls.

....moved up and low and behold!

Lost by 5 tues night.
tough to win when I'm the only regular outfielder playing.
we need to get healthy for the playoffs!
our left center dropped at least 4 EASY fly balls ::)
last inning i told the coach i was going to play lc and the guy ran out there as fast as he could so no one could pull him....drops an easy one and they end up scoring 6

1-3...ball was dead!...felt i was hitting the crap out of the ball but it went nowhere.

...standing on second after a double and the throw comes in and the second baseman whiffs it and smack!! right in the calf >:(

Season over. Ended up finishing 4th in the league tourney, which was punching far above our weight, and the last game came down to the last out of the last inning. So close. A fun game, too - no hard feelings or regrets. We definitely were not a 4th-place team, so all were happy with the finish.

Last tourney in a couple of weeks. We will win 3/4 games and not even be close to being in the playoffs. Beer tent is, no kidding, about an acre, so got that to look forward to.

meh, you got at least 14 more years of game.

On each one of my teams we have a guy who turned 50.  One is the 2nd fastest on the team with a cannon arm, and the other is still playing elite SS and hits the ball 340+.

Use the winter to get back in shape, then get ready to hit it again in the spring.

Thanks for the encouragement! I don't know about 14, but another 5 would be nice. Gonna try to make my down-time as idle as possible to try to get some cartilage relief. I think all the tourneys and multiple games per day on dryish fields took a greater toll than I thought. I'll go down fighting, regardless.

I have never used The One.  Generally, before considering a bat, I go to the site below.   They're pretty good, IMO.  Youtube videos too.

My industrial league provides bats now so teams can't cheat - Easton Synergies, mostly.   Other league I use the booger green Worth bat, but it's a little end heavy, and I like balanced bats because I find them easier to control to all fields.

We've got a couple of Synergies. Used them of an occasion - good for some contact hitting, but I can't really hit'em out using them. No feel? I don't know why as the super teams all use them and knock them 400' +. I like the composite/two piece bats - more forgiving with my swing. I can laser a pitch 1' off the plate out over the center field fence with one - a Synergy would have it caught by the short.

Must be a feel thing.   Batting second, my job isn't to hit HRs, but I had a few "oopsies" this year with the Synergy.   The old Synergies, I loathed, but the new white ones I found ridiculously good.  To each his own.

Genes rule in any sport ie Babe Ruth once ate I think 10 or 12 hotdogs before a game I think but then hit a home run. The F4 a nice bat. Agreed on Synergies I always fouled alot with those. I can throw a fastball straight down the strike zone with power but can't throw a curve worth a shit.

I've been doing it for years, but I see a lot of guys dropping to the 26-27 oz range on bats.   Bat speed rules.

Last two games: seven lasers: seven catches. Total distance moved by catchers? Less than 15 feet. Where's my blackboard?    >:(

The sabermatician in me says don't change a thing, and this will correct itself.

Put up 39 runs yesterday in game one.

Up 15-0, and our second baseman botches a lazy liner which leads  to 8 runs.  Was 25-21 in the 5th, put up a fourteen spot with one out, me on deck.   Never hit 40 before, so was actually pyched to score again.  The, the other team just quit to start the second game, which we won 8-6 or something.

Also got a concussion/slight concussion (according to doc) running down a ball which I caught, but slammed my head into the ground.  Add that to the abdominal strain which completely reaggrivated itself, the knee pain from the Tough Mudder, and I'm a fucking mess.

Shoulder feels good, though.

Assuming the hammy is good then?   You'll feel like you're going to hurt it again for awhile.....

This will sound stupid, but I highly suggest standing on a softball and rolling the bottom of you foot for about 1-2 minutes before every game.  It will loosen the posterior chain.

Beat on of the better teams in the league 19-16.
3-4 with a double and two singles.....best I've hit in a long time...all ropes between LC and RC.

the out I made was because we were out of HR's so I made sure to hit to right and lined it to 2B.

I've been fortunate to have played 4 games of softball in Fenway Park, as well as get 15 baseball swings from a pitching machine there.

In baseball, I one hopped the 380 in RC for a ground rule double, put one fly ball in the triangle, a few singles, grounders, fouls, wiffs made up the rest.  It was over in like 2 seconds.

Softball, one hopped the right field fence near Pesky Pole for a double, but nothing memorable aftert that - it was 2 swings max from a pitching machine, and the pitchers were often really high.   Lots of crummy hits,  fouls but a few decent liners.

Team's on a 5-game winning streak. Something's obviously wrong. Middle of Summer: less players showing up: we're all playing position, and tighter? 5-5 last night. Snapped a laser over the CF's head, and when he turned to get the carom off the fence it hit the cap and went up about 20' and oh-so-slowly passed out of the range of his glove. I was past 2nd when he turned around, glove on the ground.

3-4 with 3 singles up the middle.
chased a long fly ball down in right center...then had it tip off my glove for a drop.
whole time I thought I had a nice over my left hand shoulder catch...looked into my glove and no ball ::)

...we were killing the other team so the ump started calling everything strikes to get the game over...ended up fouling out cuz I swung at a head high pitch...now I owe a case for next week!

One league down, one more championship.

Bastards actually beat us first game 7-5, we didn't score until the 4th of the second, but won 5-3.  Forced game three was 10-3 easy win.   Played for 4.5 hours.

Then booze, lots of booze.

Game note - first time I ever tagged up to home on a line drive to second base.  Throw beat me by a split second, but I slid under it.  Safe.

We swept a team a month ago who was one of the better teams in RI.  Caught them off guard and they didn't catch up.   They hit so many bullets, just right at people and we took advantage.

Rematch last night.

Down 17-8 after 4.5, won 22-21.   Got mercied the next.....

I measured two shots they hit - probably around 390 ft......maybe more.....ridiculous.

Eliminated in the semis.   Winning a playoff round in this league exceeded expectations.

Guy threw me a pitch from second base.  Called strike.

Next pitch I tried to drill him, but got on top of it too much and it lined 5 feet in front and skipped up.  Got thrown out.

This was probably the best slow pitch pitcher I've faced.  Knuckleball moved a ton, and with the new 3 ft min, it was tougher than any other pitcher I've faced.  The umpires were very liberal with the speed too.  It was borderline modified pitch.

20 min before game time swung a bat for the first time this year.  Didn't hurt the finger too much.

A poor 3-7, albeit with a grand slam, 3-6 if you count a SF fly, which we don't.    Never really felt comfortable at all at the plate.

One first - did score semi-clean on a sac fly - from 1st base.

Eliminated in the semis this year, no 3 peat.

Then, learned via facebook that my buddy (52, runs faster than most 25 year olds, cannon arm, hits the shit out of the ball) is hanging it up after 32 years of softball.

Made me sad.

Played a lob ball tourney on the weekend. Fielding was aces, but batting was mediocre, at best. Had a couple of homers for singles, but was mostly grinding out shit, and even took a walk. Oh, and looked a 3rd strike onto the plate. Ouch. Pitches raining down from 20-25' - farkin' unholy. I guess you get used to it. Another tourney this weekend, but slo-pitch. Then Jays/Brewers on Sunday to see how it's really done.

We call  that unlimited arc down here.  Played in a league like that for 15 years - it's a different swing.  You have to wait until the last second, and the swing "down" on the ball.

I hate it.

Downswing causes backspin which makes it launch.  Similar to a baseball swing.

Tourney over. It was a lob ball tourney. Grr. Hit ok, fielding fine. Lost every game. Team won the beer tent, tho. Good times.

Saw the Jays/Tigers game on Sunday. 6 hours, 37 mins for a 6-5 Jays' win. Kinda cool to see a freak game like that, but 12 innings with no beer!? C'mon, now.  ::)

Won the first on a walk off in extra innings.....

Second, up two in the bottom of the 7th.  Single, single, BOMB.  Lost.

Down 17-2 after 2 in the next.

Rehabbing offseason shoulder surgery and torn leg muscles/IT band.   This, combined with coaching AAU baseball this year, makes the grand old game at it's most cloudy for me, in terms of visibility into my participation.  I've probably played 1000 games over the last 20 years.

Staring another round of aggressive therapy in April so hopefully I'll be good to go. lol, and yes dieting myself right now.
new colors for the jerseys this year and for the first time ever getting hats. added a third glove this year. I was in Modells and they had Rawlings {the only glove brand I've ever used} on sale from $70.00 down to $20.00!! pretty sure the sale sign was wrong but I wasn't gonna argue ;)
so now I have my original Rawlings that is awesome but the inside is shredded. the glove I especially ordered from Rawlings that has my initials and # engraved in it ::) which has been my go to glove the last few years and my new one that I'm breaking in.

I carried my backup glove for a full three years before I finally settled in and made the switch.  Hard to let the old glove go.

Funny thing - I learned that some infielders in baseball skip putting their finger in the pointer slot, then put ring&pinky in the pinky slot.   I tried it for a week, and that's all it took for me to change entirely.  It "extends" the glove AND makes it absolutely pain free when catching the rockets I get in my league.

Yeah it took me awhile to switch to my second glove. I'm gonna try switching fingers and see how that feels. I play outfield so there's not a ton of screaming shots that hurt my hand but what I like about my new glove is that it's a little bigger then my second. I never knew until I ordered on line that you could order a 14 inch glove and that they could be different sizes.

my friend plays in Boston and he said one of his fields is screwed because they used it as a snow dumping ground and you can barely see the top of the backstop!

I play outfield to - mostly L or LC.......The fence behind me is only 280 and there are guys who hit it 400, so the liners I get are ridiculous. Switching the fingers has made it painless.   I use a 13" glove.

Not sure what field or league but he play's first and is a big power hitter...he's like 6'4 and 270lb....nickname is Chicken

two of our fields are 290 with 20 ft fences and we use league supplied bats with only 3 hrs per team and the balls still fly out.
one field is 300 with 20 foot fence and my happiest moment was putting it over that in dead center.

Our fields go from 280 in left to 310 in RC, 300 in R.  The fences are about 40ft high with an HR stripe about 25 ft up,  (golf range nets on top of 10 ft fence) and balls go over them, so I see them land in the 350+ range.  The RC and RF don't have the nets, only 10 ft fences.

I'm lefty and bat either 1-2 so my job is to get on base and run.  Two years ago I hit about 5-6 out, but last year I didn't hit any.  Same 3 hr limit.

Anderson bats have a good rep - never swung one.

So, AAU/Spring baseball ended and I got a call to join a team mid year.  Showed up, no practice, and they informed me I was batting lead off.

I was actually nervous....something I haven't been at the plate very often.

No fast pitch this year, so this is arc with a 20 foot ceiling.  If the balls are missing high/deep, I can't do much with it anyway, so it's better to let it go.

Tough year for me so far. team is winning ether 9-2 or 10-2 {I still think the league stinks and the teams are not that good this year} but I cant hit for shit ever since my surgeries the beginning of last summer ....three things happen every at bat for me, a clean single up the middle, lazy fly ball, or a pop up  that drops behind the infield and before the outfield.

...sucks because I've always been a strong line drive hitter with power to the gaps and I'd hit some home runs by accident.

Try widening stance and not stepping, just rotate back foot/hip.

If you simplify the swing in arc softball, it's really pretty easy to place the ball.  Just forget about the bomb and don't dip.  Once the injuries heal, start ripping again.

Can't spell either.

Two things to do when you're struggling in arc - what I mentioned above, and two, crowd the plate and just try to pull the ball through the first/third baseman.  Gets you in the right mindset and swing path.  Then you can get cute once the pull swing is right.

We have 4 games left before the cities against the top 4 teams on the night we play.....should be a fun ride to the cities :)

Passed on last night's game. We suck, so no big loss. Travel, then back to town for season's-end tourney. Should be nice and slow, and (more) out of shape by then. I'm seeing me sluggish and caught off-base. Oh, brother.

Got back from vacation a day early due to weather, so I got to play in the finals.

Lost first game 14-1 (I bat leadoff, scored in first inning...that was it....fucking pathetic)

Won second on a walk off sac fly.

Lost third 13-6......they got 6 runs on a few defensive miscues.....sucks.

Lost our first round of the cities last night 21-19.
3-3 with a walk, all hard singles up the middle.
I played right and at this time of year the sun was setting right behind the backstop in the right side of view.
worst conditions I've ever played in. couldn't see a damn thing!
ground balls I'm looking in the air, fly balls I'm looking on the ground.
routine fly balls were dropping. our second baseman missed an easy double play because when the third baseman threw it to him he couldn't see it so the ball went into the outfield.
they won because they had hitters that could go to right and we didn't.

Season over. Played well-enough. Only two dingers all season. Guess my power is gone. Oh, well. My OBP was really good, but still...

Only won one game in season-ending tourney, and we really played like we could, but the other games were waaaay under-performing ones. Last one was embarrassing. I remember thinking 'what else can go wrong?' only to look up and say 'oh, that; didn't see that one coming.' Good after party and BBQ.

Do you play with fences the majority of the time, or open.  If fences, how long?

Except for out of town-tourneys, fences. Couple of fields are around 300, and one park has 4 of about 250 each.

250, that's pretty short.

Always thought 300 was fair, but of course my park is 310 in right center.

Other league is fenceless.

And the two taters were in the same game!? WTF!? Rotated the bats, but nothing gave me any more oomph. Good thing I'm on a team where it isn't glaring. As they say: you don't have to outrun the bear; you just have to outrun someone else.   :-\

Season is over...lost in the third round of the cities.
I could see it coming...we played a really good young team and we had a nightmare Monday double header.
We played at 6 then had to wait until 9 for our next game. we didn't start until around 9:30 and someone decided to turn the lights off at 10:15. so we had to wait 15-20 minutes for them to come back on and unbelievably they went off again 20 minutes later and we had to wait again. then we played 10 innings.
by the time we all got home it was 12:30 and then work, than another game last night at 7.

...not a good year for me with the bat, nothing but a singles hitter this year :-\
hopefully a full winter of rest and hopefully no injuries and I'll find my power stroke again.

Thanks I'll let you know next spring. I'm not a power hitter anyway I'm a line drive hitter that hits some out by accident. I hit the ball really well in the scrimmages before the year but then a pulled groin, a fucked up calf, and a sore back all year and I was a mess.

Legs and hips are everything - go back to the basics we teach the kids just starting out - "squish the bug" with your back foot by rotating it in when you swing - will drive the hips through it.

Calvin has the type of swing of a guy who still splits his workouts in to back/biceps, trains rear delts, and sometimes just "arms".

He is trying to become more athletic and key on hip rotation, fast twitch muscles, wrist/leg alignment, etc.....

He is struggling to let go of his old school ways, but he is trying.  We must continue to support him.  He is finally not wearing his weigh belt on the field, so it's a start.

I'm not going to read all 24 pages of this thread but I started playing softball last year for the first time since I was a kid. I grew up playing sports like hockey and football but as I've gotten older I've lost interest in playing sports where people get overly competitive. Softball has been a lot of fun so far. Most of the people that I've played against have been relaxed and made for enjoyable games.

Good luck to you.

Like any sport, there's varying levels of play, and varying levels of how players act.  If you've found a league that fits what you're looking for, it's a good time.

I enjoyed the league that my team was in last year. Another friend that will be playing in the same league asked me to play for their team as well so it looks like I'll be on two teams this year.

We had our first game in the new league last week. The team we played were quite good but very respectful crew. We lost, but it was a fun game.
Last night was our second game. There is nothing worse than playing a bunch of over competitive douche bags. They won but barely, and it had a lot to do with some less than legit calls from their side. That sorta shit kinda ruins the game. Hopefully there isn't too much of that in this league.

Played a game in that same league tonight. We got pummeled but everyone had a good time. Didn't hit well but fielded the ball really well. I bring my 4 year old son to the games and that makes for a fun night. He's a pretty energetic kid. We certainly didn't have the problems like last week.
Last weekend was a long weekend in Canada so I drank a ton of beer. It probably led to my poor hitting tonight.  ;D
I skipped my workout last night, but woke up early this morning to make up for it. After the game tonight, I'm cracking off my day 2 work out. It makes for a long day, but at least I won't fall behind.

Started playing on my second team on Thursday night. We won. I fielded the ball well and had some good hits, including a HR.

I may have a better solution. I just found out that a co-worker orders a lot of car parts from the US and has a PO box across the border. I might be able to order any bat that I want. Any suggestions?
I was thinking a 30 oz, end loaded composite. I only want to pay between $200-$260 Canadian, which is about $150-$200 US. Seems like there are lots of options.

Batspeed is key.

Opt for a 26-27 oz Miken if your league allows it.

Bats must be approved by either the United States Specialty Sports Association (USSSA), National Softball Association (NSA) or American Softball Association (ASA).
Most of the bats I've looked at have at least one of these approvals.

A new guy on my team asked 1. Why do you need a new bat?  2. Why are you batting first?  ;D

ahhh....this explains the term "hardball".

Ask Dr. Chimps.
The last bat I bought, an Anderson, I got a friend to mule it for me. Go to a tourney, there's usually a shady looking guy with a trunkfull of boxed bats, if you don't mind paying a twenty for his effort. Or, buy him a beer and start a convo. Good luck.

Ha! I remember a couple of years ago being at second and seeing a grounder go to my right and thinking 'I should run.' Was still there when the guy from first showed up. Just walked back to the bench and shrugged.

We are 4-0 so far
2-4 with a double and single.when I sit back and wait on the ball I hit very well.every out I've made this year I lunged instead of waiting for the ball to get to me.

That is key - waiting and not committing your weight forward.

Unless you're able to keep you hands back and place it.

Got smoked by one of the best teams in the city.
2-3,two singles, can't complain I hit all the ball hard every time and the out the left fielder made a nice running catch in the gap.
Against a lot of other teams it's a standup up double but these guys were good.

Team doing ok. Me, fine. Old and in RF, still: stats ok. OB% fine but no power - kinda like last year at this point. Think I am hitching/no backsweep on my swings.  ::)
Title: Re: Softball

Team still ok. No contender, again, this year. Fielding is totally solid, even infield stints, but batting blinking in and out. Getting on base nicely, usually through hits, fa(s)t running and opposing errors, but it's starting to get into my head. No worries; not going to HOF. The one thing I have noticed this year is the proliferation of super bats. Man. We have (young) guys on our team with, like, $2k's worth of bats!? I just nod and smile and tune out as they try to explain them. Kinda satisfying when you snap an out offa one of those bats, but also kinda neat when see one of those balls sail over your head and demo a windshield.

Lost again.
0-3 in the five spot. 2 out of three were hit real solid just right at people.

We won last night after losing 3 in a row.
2-3 .
first time up a solid single between 3rd and short.
second time up a solid line drive in the gap in center for a stand up double.
third time up I tell myself I'm gonna kill it and I pop up to the infield.

Whatever we needed to bring. We forgot. Two bad losses. Fielding fine. Batting ok.

Best of luck. I think Grape is right on the money with the strength and speed angle - make sure the legs(!!) and arms are strong, and waistline in check. But I'm pretty sure you have your shit together. You'll do fine. Have fun.  :)

2 games 3-4 each game.not my usual gap power yet but 6 hard singles up the middle.
We have a guy on our team that had swung the bat 6 times and had 5 homers.

..only reason his average came down was because last game we ran out of Hr's...only allowed 3 a game.

Played Division 2 college baseball.never looks like he swings hard.every year I'v played with him he hits more Hr's.
League supplies three bats-26,27,28.

....fucking idiots were corking bats for softball ::) so the city had to step in and not allow any bats but the ones they supply.

Shorthanded, only 9.

Go up 23-4 after 1.5 innings.

Don't score in innings 3-6, down 31-23.

Score 15 in top of 7th, win 38-33.  Nuts.

I remember in college playing intermural softball this tall skinny dude could jack home runs. It's all mechanics.

My last league had to supply the bats as well.

Corking is for wooden bats.....shaving/rolling is for the others.

Either way, I have no tolerance for that shit.    Pitchers could get slaughtered.

Some good mlb corking stories. I'm sure you guys know them all. I've heard about the rolling. Not the shaving? We, at one time, had guys putting fake labels on bats. That seems to have faded out. Haven't heard of that in years. Season (late) should start next week. Feel great. Certainly strong, but shoulders are a real issue these days. Kinda curious to see what gives re: throwing. Maybe I'll have to work on the underhand. I might pitch.

/we supply our own bats, as long as they adhere to asa, etc. regs. but i'm mighty sure i don't play to the standards you guys do.

I would never do it or be on a team that would.

We have three fields at the beach so it's a great place to have a cold one after the game :)

Agree.  The bats we use are lethal enough.

Using a Freak Platinum, 27oz balanced.

Nice. We have a guy leaning a 26 against the fence. He does alright. Looks like a Trump business shredder. Took a feel. Put it down. Meh.

All subjective in terms of feel, of course.

But it's hot out of the wrapper and the ball comes off the bat fast.

Perfect for the changed style of hitting I'm trying.

I understand how the Yankees fell.we've been rained out 3 out of the last four weeks :-\
We did play last week and run ruled the team that lost the city championship last year

3-3 with two doubles.

We're now 4-3. We're a solid team. Well...until we come up against real a serious team, then we have rbi trouble. Batting is aces; haven't dropped/misplaced a ball. But my shoulders are so fucked I know the other teams are trying to off-field. Good throws, but not nailing anyone at second anymore. Sucks.   :)

3-3.dribblers get through the infield, little flairs drop in, and hard hit balls find the gaps 8)

Spotted the other team 13 in the first inning.came back and won 20-19
We hit 3 Hr's and I proceeded to to hit 2 more out for outs.
I knew they would be outs and wasn't trying :-\
After the game my girl said that next time I should try to hit them out >:(

No further wins. Playing well. Just playing better teams. Body has recovered, although I now think shoulder is weakly torn (and recovering) rather than on the way to being torn. Batting fine. Catching fine, but I did miss one by inches ranging back to fence. Still bothers me.

We are tied for the best record in the city with only one loss.
Defense has been very solid and we are hitting the crap out of the ball.
One my best years ever hitting.two out of the last three games we've been down one going into top of the seventh and I've hit three run homers that have held up.
