Obama: Doctors Taking Tonsils Out For Money Instead Of Diagnosing It As Allergies

AP: In trying to rally support for health care overhaul, Obama described a patient who sees a physician for a sore throat, or a parent who brings in a child with a sore throat.

"Right now, doctors a lot of times are forced to make decisions based on the fee payment schedule that's out there. ... The doctor may look at the reimbursement system and say to himself, 'You know what? I make a lot more money if I take this kid's tonsils out,'" Obama told a prime-time news conference.

The president added: "Now, that may be the right thing to do, but I'd rather have that doctor making those decisions just based on whether you really need your kid's tonsils out or whether it might make more sense just to change; maybe they have allergies. Maybe they have something else that would make a difference."

I think we've all seen A-hole docs who have patients run repeated unnescessary tests, or even 'precautionary" procedures that ya ended up not needing.

If you don't believe there are abuses by docs running up the tab, youre pretty naive

Ok so lets say thats 1% of doctors, does that justify fucking the other 99% of the good doctors?

Besides you don't have to submit to the test that is your choice the doctor can't make you do anything

But it's a good selling point to people who have had a doc waste their time. "Obama is right, he understands us" will be the response.

not saying it's right, but it's a smart move to include that in the speech. I get annoyed when a doc makes me wait 45 minutes to spend 90 seconds with me and only wants to give me a script instead of seeing what is wrong.

Yup. I love it too. Sit there for an hour, see the doc for 60-90 seconds, and walk out of there with a script for low-grade antibiotics and $500 bill.

Let me make it clear to 240 and the rest that doubt this will be a disaster. I have the healthcare that u guys will all have if Barry gets his way. It barely works for less then 1% of the population...and I'm not talking the VA either. I've had great Army docs and PA's. But our system is in many cases all civilian. I've had to argue, cajoll, scream at docs and staff to get MRI's, further tests, specialist appointments for family members and soldiers. Most green suit Army docs bend over backwards for fellow soldiers and their families. Thats not the case with civilian docs or soldiers forced to go to civilian hospitals. We have an orthepedic surgeon in our class. He worked in a Universtity hospital in Atlanta. I guess it was a training program that it offered on a new procedure that the Army wanted. Anyway, this hospital also saw soldiers and families from one of our Posts in Atlanta. The University had to hospitals..one that saw low income patients and ones who had top level insurance. The military was forced to go to the low income hospital because of TRICARE. They got that changed eventually....good luck with rationed, shitty healthcare.

Docs do not get paid more for ordering tests (hospitals do). I see his point about a surgical proceedure, but most docs don't think like that...admitted there are probably some. Most docs get into medicine because they care about people and are benevolent. Many time excessive tests are ordered because patients demand them or docs fear lawsuits if they aren't done.

Anything that makes us see more patients per day will significantly decrease the overall care. Hospital docs are already so overworked...when you see that doc for 3-4 minutes, they don't go back to their office and relax, they are forced to see the next patient. That goes on all f'n day for many docs. there should be a rule that docs should not be forced to see a patient more than every 10-15min. Patients need to keep their appointments, employers need to respect doctor's appts and allow their workers to go to their appts with a confirmation slip. As an example, many offices have open appt during the day but are packed in the AM or end of the day.
People also need to see that their doctor's appt is more important than anything that is non-emergent in their schedule. Many people cancel or don't show for their appt for crazy reasons.

Our docs are like that...why...because all our medical records are online and it takes time to input date. Oddly servers crash and delay patient care. Doesn't Barry want all our records online. We have all this shit and it doesn't work.

Patton was an amazing man and his early life was far more interesting to me than his exploits in WW2.

okay, this one gets thru to me. I currently just visit the nearest convenient care clinic when something breaks. You have to have insurance to be there. And it's not all that great. but it still sounds better than what hh6 has.
