Monsters!!!
Members of Get Big resurface in NeversinkFor years, Get Big was one of the region's favorite cover bands. But the party-rock group threw in the towel in 2004, deciding to move on to other projects instead of continuing to slug it out in bars across Hampton Roads.
Then, starting two years ago, the band's soulful spirit resurfaced in a different guise: Neversink. Joining Get Big's Chris Ambrosino and Kenny Shields in the trio is Jim Gordon, a guitar player who took time to answer questions about the new all-eclectic, mostly acoustic band.
Explain your name. Neversink, New York, is Chris Ambrosino's hometown.
What year did the band start? 2006
Who plays what? Chris Ambrosino is the singer and plays guitar, percussion and piano. Kenny Shields sings and plays mandolin, saxophones, flutes, guitar and melodica. I [Jim Gordon] sing and play lap steel and National steel guitar.
Where is your home base? Seaford
What's your style? Neversink is an eclectic blend of multi-instrumental acoustic music ranging from funky bluegrass and old-time to modern adult alternative and original music. When we started this project we decided we would only do music that moved us. This idea has led to what we think are some really nice surprises in the Neversink repertoire.
Who are your musical heroes? Jim: Chet Atkins, Bill Frisell, Ray Lamontagne. Chris: Jackson Browne, Ryan Adams, Billie Holiday. Kenny: Joe Jackson, Bruce Hornsby, Miles Davis.
What's your favorite local stage? The NorVa.
Describe your dream gig. South by Southwest festival in Austin, Texas.
Why do you love to play? It's really just what we do. Whether we're doing shows, writing and recording or just playing in Kenny's parlor, the experience of exploring and making music together is what motivates us.
What's your ultimate goal? The release of Neversink's debut album.
